My husband and I went for the happy hour and had fondue and hefeweizen.  It was really good.  Both of us got our one fondue with bread and I got the 10 hefeweizen that they have on tap that is very fruity (sorry I don't remember the exact name) and my husband got the stein of the same thing.  It was exactly what we wanted.  The fondue and the hefeweizen went really good together.  We should have stopped there but our eyes were bigger than our stomachs and we both got a salad.  He got the Cobb salad and I got the yellow and red beet salad.  They were both good although the beet salad needed more dressing in my opinion.  They now offer the growlers that you can take home with the beer of your choice.  The growler is 8 bucks about and the hefeweizen we wanted was 14 bucks for 64 oz.  We didn't get it this time but next time we are around we are gonna pick one up.

We were looking for a place just to get an appetizer and a drink. I saw the "Pub and Grill" sign across the freeway from our hotel and we decided to check it out. I am so glad that I stumbled upon this place. Great German food and a wide selection of beers on tap from imported to local. Try the German potato salad!! Love it!!

My family used to come here all the time. It is actually tradition to eat here after going to the airport to pick someone up.

I used to love this place, but it has had a menu makeover. The menu is different and the portions are much smaller than they used to be. I ordered the pork dish on happy hour and didn't like it. The spatzle was good though. My husband ordered Käsespätzle which is just spatzle with cheese and onions. His dinner was the same size as my SIDE of spatzle and costs $7 more....

The dessert is still good so it gets 3 stars, though I'd rather give it 2.

WOW...what a great experience. During this recent visit, I came during the late afternoon happy hour....sat in the bar and ordered apps off the menu....I tried the pretzel with the mustards....use care as this is some HOT mustard...I tried the meatballs...pretty yummy....the cabbage rolls were fantastic....the lintel soup was perfect. I decided to try the beer sampler...WOW...the beer was so cold and refreshing that I ended up getting a pint to finish off my meal.

I had no room for dessert...maybe next time.

Fantastic food, great service, very comfortable atmosphere....and acceptable prices.

I am really disappointed that they stopped using their rotisserie.  The best things on their menu were the dishes which had these nicely roasted meats in them.  Each location has a nice built in rotisserie displayed prominently in the front of the restaurant which would suggest it might be an important piece of equipment for them but sadly they are turned off and not used.  Now all they have going for them is some imported beer and some okay fondue.  Probably won't be returning unless they turn on their rotisserie ovens again.

    Five-Star Happy Hour

Happy Hour at Gustav's is the bomb! Their Happy Hour food menu is legit! It's affordable, vast, varied, and contains more than just fried finger foods. They have potato cakes, sausage and kraut plates, a killer beet salad, cabbage rolls!, Scotch eggs, it goes on and on. And, of course, their hot soft pretzels are cheap, huge, and delicious, especially when enjoyed with their three house mustards, which range in heat from make-your-eyes-water to you've-vacated-more-than-just-your-sinuses.

The Happy Hour is timed well too, with two separate sessions, the second beginning at 9 p.m. instead of the usual 10 p.m. They have a long list of the classic German Biers (Lowenbrau, Haufbrau Haus, Spaten, Franziskanner, Paulaner, etc) that you can get in a pint or a larger mug. The bier isn't cheap, but then again German biers rarely are. Happy Hour is only for the food, sadly not the drink. That's really my only complaint about Gustav's. I wish their biers would come down in price a tad during Happy Hour. But their Happy Hour food menu is so good, I quickly forget about my complaint.

I've never been to Gustav's outside of Happy Hour, nor have I ever ordered off the regular menu. If I had, maybe this review would be 5 stars, maybe it wouldn't. But in terms of Happy Hour, Gustav's is just about as good as it gets.

This location I find to be my favorite out of the 4 in the area. I especially appreciate that we can show up at 9pm and enjoy happy hour in the comfort of the dining room rather than being confined to a bar.

You can't beat the bier sausage and fondue or the Pretzel bun burger with munster. Occasionally they offer scotch eggs on the menu, which my husband loves. Not very many people offer these little delights, and I happen to like the ones at Gustav's better than what i've had at Horse brass...which is really the only other place I see them served consistently. Some of the items here can be sauced a little heavily for my liking, but they always take care to fill my special requests. So I appreciate that and it's part of what keeps us coming back.

Solid food.  Solid service.  An institution in this hub within the metro area.  It doesn't have an especially imaginative offering of dishes, but it's very reliable, fairly priced, and satisfyingly filling.

Went back after being contacted by the restaurant.  They wanted to make it right.  My wife and I went back and had a better experience.  Still wasn't 5 stars but 4 is fair.  If they attempt to make it right, I'll always give them another shot.  Shows good customer service from management.

Food and beer is GREAT!  But the "revised" happy hour menu is horrible!  We used to come here all the time for happy hour and get fries with our meals...not the case any more. It is more of a "sample" menu. Won't be back.

I came here for dinner on a business trip and couldn't be happier. The bartender was friendly and more than happy to suggest beer for me, plus the food was amazing. If you order the roast pork sandwich I suggest getting an Oktoberfest beer to offset the hotness of the habanero.

You are not allowed to go here without eating fondue, it is mandatory...anyone should know this. Happy hour is not only for the bar...enjoy any seat you like! Fantastic....love it!

Service was a little slow today but not for lack of hustling.

Perhaps it is because I am German, and just came from Germany, that I was terribly disappointed by Gustav's. I had the kasespatzle, which were really oily, and had a strange mix of cheese on them. Also, the grilled onions on top were rather... soggy, I suppose is a good word to use, and the noodles themselves were bland.

Also, though this may not matter to most people, I found it disappointing that none of the staff seemed to be able to properly pronounce even the most simple words/phrases.

I will most definitely not be returning to, nor recommending Gustav's to anyone.

I love their happy hour here. I always get the cheese fondue, very tasty and cheap for happy hour. Love the location in a chill area not too crowded, nice place to relax and chat with friends.

Only place in town I found Oktoberfest and different varieties too.

Ate with a work friend who spent three years in Germany.  We started with pretzels, which, while not authentic, were delicious.  I paired it with the Dijon and there wasn't a bite left.

My lunch consisted of the schnitzel club.  A pounded flat chicken breast that was breaded and fried.  There was great flavor in the breading and they cooked it with care to leave some moisture behind.

    Good service and decent prices.

Stopped by Gustav's for happy hour w/ work folks.  Overall, happily pleased w/ cheap eats from 3-6p.  Tried their Scotch Eggs, happy hour three-pack of fondue and their house recommended hefeweizen.  All made passing marks.  Hoping to return w/ the family when we're debating on limited eats on SE 82nd.

They have a great happy hour from 3-6, and it's all ages, so I can take my kids and we can eat cheap food while Dad and I have a beer or two. The drinks aren't happy hour priced, though. Which isn't that big of a deal because their beers aren't that expensive!

I looooooove their fondue. I wish they had bottomless cheese fondue. That would be amazing. But they don't, so savor every bite.

The onion soup I tried was deeeeeeelicious. Everything I've tried there has been good, although the scotch egg was...weird... I think that's an acquired taste anyway.

    Cheap beer.....the end!

Just joking, but really that is the biggest selling point for me.  The have a large list of mostly German beer (obvi) and a few domestics too.  The price of a pint is $4.75, for the good beer!  You can also get a beer sampler (4 mini pints(like 4-5oz)) for the same price, which I love cause I can try several beers without getting wasted :)

The staff is friendly and knowledgeable about their beer, I asked our server to bring me a variety of beers on my sampler as I am very inexperienced when it comes to German beer (plus the names are impossible to say without sounding like a fool!) and they were all delicious.

Food is grubbin' as well and it will only set you back about $10-15 a person.  They have a good variety of traditional German food as well as some more upscale bar food, like a super good burger with a pretzel bun.  They also have happy hour in the bar from 3-6pm and 9-close with cheap eats such as fondue, pretzels and sausage, they are in the $5 range.  Das goooooode!

    Great German Beers.
    Good Fondue with variety.
Cod and Chips is not bad.
    Mustards are okay.

    Happy Hour menu is nice.
Gives allot of options for food.

Up from 3 stars, Gustav's has won my heart (or stomach) for happy hour.

Their German Hefe--"Weihenstephaner Kristall Weissbier"--is one of the best beers I've had (a n00b like me haven't had too many, but I certainly love this one). You get a hint of banana flavor every sip and it comes in a half liter tall glass, freakin' trippy! I don't like my beer hoppy either, so Kristallweizen is perfect.

    Our bartender provided excellent service.

Shepherd's Pie is a must have!
Fish & Chips is just mediocre.
Fondue and sausages can be worth a try, though not my taste.

Our meal ended with a warm seasonal crisp (cranberry/ apple) plus vanilla ice-cream on top. To be honest, it wasn't quite as impressive as the berry slump at Stanford's.

Still, I'm proud of having Gustav's in Clackamas just down my street.

    4 stars here!

Food here is definitely on point.  They offer authentic German food and the portions are huge!  I had both the chicken schnitzel and corned beef sandwich and they were amazing.  The chicken was crisp and moist and and the corned beef sandwich was gargantuan.  The prices were pretty average and the service was great.  Gosh, I wish there was a place like this closer to home.   Good stuff

I have not had a bad experience at any of the Gustav pubs. They can be a little spendy but they are usually worth it. Great beer selection and bar. The happy hour is a great way to go. Kudos for keeping their quality at that level for so many years.
Their fondue is to die for but I wish they would back to their old selection of bread that comes with it. Still worth 4 stars though!

Superb service but very salty happy hour food selections.

I came here with a friend on a friday night around 9:00PM (the time when their late night happy hour starts). There was a 10 minute wait, but we didn't mind. The place was busy, despite its' almost tucked-in location. We ordered our strawberry lemonades (limited to 2 refills just an FYI) and the following:

    1. Swiss cheese fondue ($5)- Comes with a small "pot" of creamy dip surrounded by bits and pieces of rye and sourdough bread. The sodium factor was okay on this one.

    2. Shepard's Pie ($5)- Rich meaty flavor but too salty for our taste. Didn't finish this because we ran out of the fondue bread (used as a "salt cushion" for our tastebuds).

    3. German potato cakes with cured salmon ($6)- The saltiest out of the three dishes we ordered. Literally had to eat it with the leftover bits of bread from the fondue plate.

The portions were just right. Our waiter was nice but due to the high sodium content (we each downed 2 waters and 2 strawberry lemonades to drown the thirsty side effects of too much salt), we won't be coming back here for happy hour.

Off Happy Hour a.k.a someone else is paying:The Munich platter was delicious, and anything that comes with the mustard is a winner in my book.  Every part was really good.  I don't drink beer, but my date said it was good.  the service was great and the waiter was super cute all clean cut and very non-PDX preppy.  I went one more time off HH and the non-meat options were few to begin with and the 2 things I wanted were out.

Happy Hour a.k.a I open my wallet and remove the cobwebs:  I ordered Cesar Salad and small fondue w/ pesto.  The pot looked tiny, but turned out to be the right amount, the cesar salad was good...but hey it's a salad so it was ummm...good.

I would definitively go back, especially if I was in a meat mood

Ach Tung!!!  This is my favorite German restaurant in the U.S.

My favorite routine is the fondue with pesto/sausage and a delicious Scotch Egg.   The Eisbein braised pork shank is my all-time fav as it is absolute porky goodness accompanied with boiled potatoes and sauerkraut.

The beer will leave you very very happy and the service and ambience are par excellence!

You cannot beat Gustavs any where in this great land of ours!

This place is "good stuff." From their beer to their appetizers to their actual entrees... uhh pretty amazing. Their mashed potatoes are to die for. You can tell that they have been preciously prepared before they're placed right in front of your hungry eyes. Their sausages are just as wonderful. It's perfect for happy hour.

Their service is just as splendid as their food. We came here when it was packed. The wait was supposed to be 30-40 minutes. BUT they took care of us right away and seated us as soon as a spot for two opened up. Servers are more than willing to recommend what's best on their menu and give their own personal input.

Come hungry, come with a group, or a significant other. This place is great for all sort of occasions.

Came here for late night HH on Saturday and was not disappointed! We had friends in town from Seattle and all I had to say was "Optimator" and we were on our way!

I love the decor, totally over the top and kitschy. I also love that you can get Happy Hour in the whole restaurant! Nearly makes up for the fact that all of the tables in the bar are seated through the hostess. The only first-come seating are the stools at the bar top.

Now the food!! I have been here twice and both times I've left plotting how I am going to get those bottles of mustard in my purse without anyone noticing. The mustards are amazing! The lentil soup, reuben pie, sausage duo and pretzel (with fondue, of course) all are crowd pleasers. I was a little disappointed with the sauerkraut this last time. It had no bite whatsoever. I like cabbage, but what I wanted was sauerkraut!!

The beers are great. Tons of choices, I like that there are 3 different size options.

Our waiter was spot on - and totally didn't mind that we were just constantly flagging him down to order more.

I really like this place, and will continue to come here to eat and drink too much!

The Happy Hour is filled with so many yummy drinks and food, I really enjoyed the Reuben pie. Drinks were good and the desserts top notch.

The only down side was that our waiter seemed like his dog died and the hostess seemed like she was about to fall asleep but that didn't take away too much from the great experience.

This could easily be a new guilty pleasure.

Food is good for "German" food... though it's not my fave thing to eat.
Happy Hour restaurant wide from 3-6PM and starts again at 9PM.
    Salmon fritters were awesome!
Potato pancakes with lox is always good.
Their 3 mini Burger HH was Okay and decent in size.
Fondue was okay and also decent in size.
I was told their duck was good but I didn't try it.

The place is a Bavarian dream. It makes me miss Oktoberfest.  The decor feels like you are in Germany but the food is a miss.

Went there for lunch and had the Sampler  Platter. The food was cold and tasted old. The mashed potatoes were hard and tasted like they were leftovers. The turkey was dry and the cabbage was stale.

I think lunch was just the wrong time to go since there was not much business. I would give this place another go for dinner.

Gustavs is one of my favorite places to go for happy hour. It is close to the town center so it is a nice place to go to after a movie and get some good grub for a good price. They don't have drink specials at happy hour, but their happy hour food makes up for it. I like to get their caesar salad with schnitzel strips or the fish and chips. They also have a good sheperd's pie or you can get the schnitzel strips by themselves. Of course the swiss fondue is a must too! Add on a pretzel or some bier sausage to make it better.

Their dinner choices are good too, just a little pricey. I love their schnitzel club sandwich with tomato cucumber salad. It comes with the delicious chicken schnitzel with lettuce, tomato, onion, mustard-mayonnaise and bacon on ciabatta. This sandwich is so good I could eat it everyday!

The atmosphere is fun and the servers are always friendly and don't miss anything that you are done with or need a refill of. Gustavs is one of my favorite places to eat.

I don't recall if I've ever been to Gustav's prior to tonight. I had the crab and red pepper fondue with grilled breads. I paired it with a delicious bottle of Belgian Frambois. Awesome- like a strong manly raspberry punch. The two went great together- the sweetness of the beer cut a bit of the fondue's saltiness.
The fondue was awesome. Several chunks of dungeoness crab and perfectly balanced with chunks of roasted red peppers.
I finished with the house Bavarian Cream with raspberry sauce. Somehow both light and rich. delicious.
A great solo meal. Read my kindle a bit, worked on a keynote prez and enjoyed some wonderful food. Thanks Gustav's. I'll return with guests next time.

Came here for business diner and I have to say, it's been a long time since I've eaten this well. The best part: bread pudding. ;)))
But let's start from the beginning.
It was a Monday night, I think, so not much was going on in Clackamas, OR; :)) No wait time to speak of, very pleasant staff at the host desk and at the table. The portions were just right - I hate places where they serve oversized meals that u either throw away or have to take with you. Quality of ingredients, presentation and overall ambiance was very high. As I said, this was a business dinner and as such we needed a place where you can talk. If that's your requirement too, you'll like this restaurant.
The bill for three people was very reasonable and if I have to go to Portland again, I might actually want drive to Clackamas just to get some German brew and bread pudding ;))

I'll punch my father-in-law square in the mouth for talking me out of eating here for the last 5 years. It took a drive to Klackama-whatever to finally sit down and eat the meal that could let me die a happy man.
If you get dissuaded with talk of Gustav's being pricy, scoff. It's not true. There are prices for everyone. If you've eaten at Chili's, or are obese like me and order enough food for 3 people at Taco Bell, you can afford Gustav's.
The fondue is fond-tabulous. The sausages are sau-sensually delicious. The beer selection is obviously impressive. I don't drink, especially not beer, but if I did, I'd have been in beer-adise.
Enough with the horrible, hyphenated contractions. Get your keys, make some room in your constipated bowels and get to Gustav's. You Gusta-hav's it!

I'm ashamed of myself for that last one.

We stopped in on the basis of the reviews and because we were nearby. It was decent. The bread was tasty, my soup and sandwich were good; the fries were pretty bland. My husband ordered dessert, which was slow to arrive.

They have a menu of food for the 0-3 set that avoids choking-risk foods and includes some soft foods for the very young. It was lovely that they had it although our son would have been quite happy to just share our meals, I think.

The staff was very friendly, and tolerant of/clearly used to children.

For the restrooms, there's a family/handicapped restroom with a changing table. Which is nice, although it is a pity that if we are changing our son's diaper the handicapped restroom is also in use by definition.

The interior is very atmospheric. It's also very dark. It was lunchtime and it was dark enough in there to cause me some eyestrain.

I received a reply from the Executive Coordinator with regard to my review. The fact they're reading their reviews and are concerned makes me more than happy to give Gustav's another go - they also sweetened the deal with a gift certificate (not that I needed the incentive to go back, as I believe in giving restaurants second, and sometimes, third chances).

People say customer service is lacking these days; I disagree. It's not; it's just some places simply care more than others and here is a shining example.

I was sitting in my hotel room having major hunger pains and trying to figure out where to slip on a feedbag. I went through the hotel guidebook and came up blank! I'm sitting there just flipping my keycard, over and over in my hand, trying to come up with something. And then I noticed that the keycard had the name of a restaurant on it. Hmmmmm

A quick check online and I saw that they were A-OK with the Yelp Reviewers! We dashed to the car and made it there within moments of closing. We were promptly greeted and seated!

We had 3 menu's to choose from...wow! and the most awesome concept....

HAPPY HOUR DINNER PRICES from 3pm to 6pm and 9pm to closing.
    - cheeseburger $3.99
    - fries $.99
    - Bier and Bratwurst sausage $3.99
    - slider (chicken/brat/burger) $3.99
    - Lentil Soup $1.99
    - Potato Pancakes $2.99
    - AND MORE

I had the lentil soup, 1/2 an order of stuffed cabbage and mashed potatoes and potato pancakes. All for under $14.00

Everything was delish, except the potatoes were too salty for me. But remember, I don't put salt on my food and I don't cook with salt so it might just have been me.

I was uber happy and will most definitely come back when I'm in the neighborhood. (It's just a 10 hour drive from home. LOL).

Ah...Gustav's.  I am very fortunate to have been in Munich for Oktoberfest a few years ago...truly it is the world's largest party.  During this trip, I got to savor authentic German fare and gained a new found appreciation for the cuisine.  Previous to that trip, Gustav's had always been a family favorite, as it was close to home and normally had something for everyone.

Upon my return from Germany I found that the sauerkraut, the sausage and the brawts seemed to lose a little something.  While the fondue still is worth the trip, I realized that the victuals really were not as grand as I once thought.  However, they do have on tap some great German beers, and for that reason alone, I will occasionally go just to raise my stein and say a Prost to Oktoberfest, German beer and the amazing beer houses in Munich.

When you are shopping in the Clackamas area there are not a lot of choices other a whole slew of chain restaurants.  Not that there is anything wrong with that but...well, the menus don't change all that often.  My husband and I were rattling off the choices and none sounded all that appealing until I remembered Gustav's.  I have passed by the super cute building many a times and never went in so we figured well, why not give it a try.

It was cute inside!  Lots of families happily eating and chatting away.  I had never been to a German restaurant before, I always assumed there would not be a lot of vegetarian food which there wasn't.  We started with the warm Bavarian pretzel which came with three different mustard dipping sauces.  It was quite good, my husband really liked the dipping sauces.  I decided to get the Northwest Salad that comes with mixed greens, grape tomatoes, walnuts, and blue cheese.  It came with a maple vinaigrette which I got on the side as I wasn't sure how it would taste.  Maple dressing?  Hmm, well it was OK...nothing fabulous but good enough.  I really liked how they had a lot of side salads to choose from, all at a very reasonable price.  The potato pancakes were good too, a lot less thick than the ones that I have had before which was good.

Paul got the chicken jagerschnitzel which he really liked.  He mentioned that the veggies had been braised and were prepared quite nicely.  He mentioned a couple times that he liked everything.

Solid 3.5 stars.  Not sure if I would head back there super fast, they just do not have a lot of vegetarian options.  But, the next time we are in Clackamas and I am craving a salad I would totally consider Gustav's.  The wait staff was super friendly which was nice.
