I fucking love the Halua.
It probably doesn't deserve 5 stars..... Â Â but my family has been coming here for like
30 years. So I'm partial. Â And it's at the top of my "must eat at" list whenever I'm in town.
Pu pu platter is awesome. Pork lo mein. And they have really good lunch specials. I think it's like $5.
Years ago, I came in here with a few co-workers of mine to get some late night food. Â We ordered the pupu platter and a few appetizers. Â The server was some old man and was rude and abrasive to us the entire time. Â One of the people I was with spilt his water all over the table and took a napkin from the vacant table next to us (almost no one was in there). Â The server brought the bill and screamed at us in Mandarin until we walked out.
The worst service I have ever received. Â Never go here!! The food, service, atmosphere is terrible.
PS - This is a hang out for Nashua white trash alcoholics!
Figured I'd give this place a shot since it's right down the street from me. Got take out one night and it was absolutely the worst Chinese food I've ever had. Right up there with the worst restaurant food I've had, period.
The place was dingy inside and stunk like cigarette smoke, I swear the food did too when I got it home. Maybe the smell was just stuck in my nostrils, I don't know. Pricewise, it was right up there with Chen Yang Li or Lilac Blossom, only nowhere near as good.
As far as the food itself, I ended up throwing most of it out; it was just that bad, and I am the LAST person you'll ever find wasting food. I'd recommend Chen Yang Li or Lilac Blossom like I mentioned, or for just a quick take out place, 98 on Amherst St. is pretty good.
The food was good (better than many similar places), and the wonton soup was amazingly good. Â We went in the off hours (about 2pm, and the service was tough, because there was only one poor server on, but she did a great job managing about 8 tables at one time, and 2 big parties within those. Â Â Just make sure you order with no MSG, or you will definitely feel it for the next few hours.
Review Source:Very Rude Waitress!
I came here a second time because I liked their eggrolls, and this time my GF and I ordered a Pupu platter, we asked the waitress what was in it because the menu did not specify. The waitress did not like us asking her this question. Â We asked her for a substitution, which she also did not like and we were allowed only one substitution even though we we're paying for it. The order came out with the wrong substitution, we pointed it out and she blamed us for it.
The owner who sat us down was very polite and I've had a decent experience there before, but this lady was so rude from the beginning that we had to leave ASAP!
I REALLY don't understand what everyone dislikes about Haluwa. I've never had a bad meal there and I've been eating there for years. Granted, we always get the Pupu Platter, so I really don't know what the rest of their entrees are like. We also normally go during non-peak hours and slow days. We went today (Tuesday at 3:30 pm) and it was all perfect. Everything was fresh and hot. It was slow so we had our food in about 10 minutes.
And to Eric N.- Who cares if they've ever updated their menu? Its easy to read and its not like they need to keep up with the latest trends on chicken fingers and fried rice. Its not like Chinese-style American is a rapidly changing food market.
The Haluwa is an INSTITUTION. Do you like booze? Get a mai tai. Do you like cheese? Go for a karaoke night. Â Do you like meat? Get the PuPu platter. Vegetarian? Get the Lo Mein. Oh my god. I live in SF, but I dream about the Lo Mein...so delicious...and without the weird flavor of the so-called "chow mein" I get out here. Whatever you get, enjoy it with the hot mustard and duck sauce. Mmmm. Duuuuuuuck sauce.
Whenever I'm back in NH, I make a point to eat and/or drink here. Honestly, I have such great memories of this place and just straight-up love it. That's love with an L-U-V! I hope other Yelpers will enjoy it as well.
The Haluwa seems to be a popular nighttime haven for the 30 something and way up crowd. Located next to Shorty's in the Nashua Mall, this place is similar to the Jade Dragon in Merrimack, where they serve up a Chinese menu and offer live entertainment, DJ and karaoke in the lounge. The dimly lit lounge has a full cocktail bar, comfy seating, and performing area.
I stopped here for a late Thursday night dinner on the way back home. The place was fairly busy because it was karaoke night! On Fridays, there are live bands and there is never a cover charge at the Haluwa!
This review is for the food. I asked to be seated in the dining room, which was empty and has plenty of booth and table seating. The menu offers a good selection of Chinese dishes including Polynesian and Szechuan dishes. 21 Luncheon Combinations ($4.75-$6.75) are offered 11:30AM-3:30PM (Mon-Sat) and as well as 9 Dinner Combinations ($9.50-$10.50). The Pu Pu Platter for 2 which offers a sampling of appetizers comes out to the table flaming. If you don't care for Chinese food, an American menu is offered including sandwiches, chicken, fried scallops, and more, all served with French fries and a tossed salad.
An older waitress did a good job taking care of my table, who brought out ice water, hot tea, bread with duck sauce and hot mustard. I started with a bowl of Hot & Sour Soup ($3.75), which was very spicy, but good. For dinner I had the Dinner Combo 6 ($9.50): Roast Pork Lo Mein with pork fried rice and 6 chicken fingers. The pork fried rice was covered in lots of soy sauce, no good. The chicken fingers were greasy and fried golden brown and very crispy. The lo mein (medium wide noodles) was pretty good and tasty.
While I was eating my dinner, I could hear the DJ and karaoke going on in the lounge. I heard an older guy croon the 1970s One Hit Wonder "Magic" by Pilot. It was sooooo bloody awwwful! I wish I could SOUND THE GONG! "Oh ho ho it's Magic....." Just imagine the character Bill Dauterive (the bald guy in the white tank) from "King of the Hill" singing drunk karaoke and that's exactly how this guy in the lounge sounded. "Oh ho ho it's Magic..." I wanted to pull off a Magic trick and disappear! Stop the torture! I had the food packed up, quickly settled the check, and did my magic trick-poof! Some good rock & roll in the ride got me back on track.
