I have been to over 90 breweries and I have never said this about a brewery and probably never will again because I appreciate the art of a brewery...but this place SUCKED! Let me tell our tale...this was our third stop of the day after Quay Brewing and Perrin Brewing. Â It was tucked away in a corner, hence the name Hideout, we thought it was cool and original. Â Once we walked in we got stares from just about everyone there as if we were aliens or something. Â Now I remembered seeing online they have quite possibly the biggest sampler tray EVER (25 beers) so I really wanted to try it. However once we sat down, me and my party weren't sure right away. The waitress came over, asked what we wanted, we asked a question or 2 and said we just need a minute to decide. Fast forward ten minutes...she still hasn't come back. Â On top of that, our table was disgusting, after waiting forever my girlfriend went and asked for a rag to clean it (thinking the bartender would say "oooo let me clean that for you"), but no he handed it to her and she had to clean it herself. FINALLY the male bartender was cleaning up other tables and stopped to say "O do you need anything?" Ummm yes...we would like the 25 beer sampler with 2 oz pours and a pretzel we asked. We then went outside to their beer garden which actually is kind of nice.
-Our pretzel came out and it was a microwaved pretzel I used to eat when I was 12. Â Then the beer came...
-Now the sample tray is badass I will give them that, but the beer...25 beers mind you..all sucked. Â
-My girlfriend ended this trip with buying me a glass and nicely asking if they had stickers or coasters (since she knows I collect them) and the girl basically laughed and said "stickers? Why would we have stickers? No we don't have stickers...". Like REALLY? You have a medal door right behind you covered in stickers from some of the best breweries around but you are confused and shocked that a customer asked for a sticker from YOUR brewery?
-After speaking with locals, workers at other breweries, Â we basically found out the owners wife left him or something, the workers hate their jobs, the main brewers left and they hired new ones (who can't brew), basically the place is a dump. Â I HIGHLY recommend do not give a penny to this place. The ONLY saving grace they had was their mason jar glass they sell..if not for that I would give this place 0 out of 100.
The Hideout is a fun place to visit. This was in the old Hubba Tubba building and its arranged a bit oddly, but it ads to the quirky appeal the place. They have a lit board with all the beers they are currently serving, of which there are many. My only complaint is that there are no descriptions of the beers on the menu and often times the name gives a bit of a clue, but I'd like to know more. The plus side to that is they give samples so you can get the one you like in the end. I'd rather not have to look like mooch and try 3 or 4 sample before I get what I'm looking for. The beers I had were good, I wouldn't say great, but worth a stop for sure.
Review Source:This place has a new owner & I feel like it's gone downhill. Really disappointing because I thought this place was neat; Tucked away, quaint, good beers, charming..
We went in recently, had a delicious brew, the owner's wife was working behind the bar and she was wonderful!! Super nice, friendly, and knowledgeable about the beers, and seemed to be excited to chat with us and to be co-owning an awesome brewery.
Now maybe what happened next isn't SUCH a big deal. But it did sour our visit for several (possibly insignificant) reasons. I guess it depends on how you look at it. I'm not unreasonable, it just rubbed me the wrong way.
My parents and I had just been to Perrin Brewing Co. before we decided to have one at Hideout. While at Perrin, we received stickers with their logo on it from our waitress. When we arrived at Hideout we noticed their cooler door was covered in stickers. I asked the owner nicely & excitedly if he'd like a Perrin sticker for his cooler door! He said, "No! I don't think we have other breweries on it. Sorry...." There were literally stickers from Founders, Big Buck, Bell's, Greenbush, Shorts, the WAB & even a number of others that my beer-soaked brain cells cannot recall! I wouldn't have even asked if there weren't already other brewery stickers on it! Okay. So. This bothered me because
1) There was a nice way to say this. I would have understood if he had just said something like, "Well, you know, we're trying not to put anymore stickers on it" or "We don't want to put other brewery stickers on it anymore but thanks!" Instead I got a rude no, and a lie! Way to go, business owner :)
2) A big reason why I appreciate & admire the Michigan Brewers community is BECAUSE it *is* a community! There is so much support and admiration and even inspiration in the craft beer-making community that a microbrewery that has such little support for other breweries is to me, really off-putting & frankly doesn't really make me want to support theirs. I also think about what if I were FROM Perrin and worked for them, and I was in the Hideout enjoying their beer. Either way, I'm a patron at this man's business and he should probably be kept away from the customers or learn to interact with them if he wants to keep a cool place cool. The end. :)
I felt like I found this place, which is actually part of the appeal. I went there today and was treated great! It was like going to a friend's house. The lady behind the bar gave me a five-glass sampler, reasonably priced at $5, and physically wrote down what each one was on a sheet of paper. That may not appeal to most, but I thought it was great. Then, to top it off, the brew was superb. The music was 90s alternative/college rock so it wasn't so bad and/or uppity. My only criticism is the cramped location, but other than that, this is a fine place to have good conversation with better people!
Review Source:The beer was pretty decent but seemed to cost more than it should for it's quality. Liked the idea of the small bar area for people to chit chat but it seemed like regulars and didn't quite have the room to squeeze in to make friends. I was too young to mingle as well so that is my problem. Was good enough to say, "hey check out this brewery I know about that no one else does."
Review Source:I visited in April 2011. Â Cool place. Â Had an upstairs and a down. Â Looked like it would be super fun in the summer with the outdoor area that had a shuffle board court and horse shoe pit. Â
Totally out of the way and interesting to find. Â
Good selection of beers. Â I enjoyed the coconut porter and the hazelnut stout.
Nice and friendly service. Â Free popcorn.
On a weekend brewery tour with my boyfriend, our last stop was Hideout Brewing Company. Â I loved that the title actually fit the place.. because it is a pretty hard find. Â However, it's totally worth it!
As soon as we parked and headed for the the door, we passed a group of drunken smokers. Â Already, I knew this place had to be somewhat of a good time. Â Walking in, I was weary at first, the place was calm with just a few people at the bar. Â The walls pretty bare with just the little bar and the wall taps. Â We took a seat next to some ladies and right away they struck up a conversation. Â Immediately, I felt like I had been coming there for years.
I ordered one of their IPA's and it was delightful. Â The bartender was super friendly and knew her stuff. Â She gave us ideas of beers to mix and match as well, totally cool.
By the end of the night, my boyfriend was the dj, the whole bar was singing together, and we all had become friends. What a great night. Â Surely one of my favorite experiences at a place in a long time. Â
I highly recommend this place.
My wife and I stopped by the hideout last Sunday. Â We really enjoyed all the beers we tried during our stay there. Â I had the black IPA first and found it to be pretty hoppy with a little sweetness that made it unique as far as other IPA's I've had (alot). Â I also tried one of their other IPA's and thought that it was excellent as well. Â My wife tried one of their less hoppy pale ales (I can't remember which) and liked it as well.
The ambience is cool, there was a big group of the mug club folks in the joint while we were there, so we talked about beer and had a great time. Â I wish I lived closer to take advantage of this place more often.
Stop number four on our Michigan Brew Tour 2010.
The best part of this stop - the magnetic poetry post next to our bar stools. Hours of drunken entertainment could be had if all bars offered this fun little distraction.
Sadly though, the beer and service were severly lacking. The bartender watched us walk in, sit down, and prompty walked to the couple who sat down after us to get them a beer. After waiting, with no offer to explain what they have available or give us a menu, we found a board listing draft beers and took a stab at finding one we liked.
My Bootleg IPA was meh. We stayed for 30 minwes, and decided we were wasting valuable time that could be spent finding another brewery that offered a better selection, with servers that actually provided decent service.
What to expect when going to the Hideout Brewing Company...
Once you have found the place (which is located off of Plaza Drive in the NE side), you will be greeted by a warm gathering of people. It can always be spotted from I96 toward Muskegon, just before the Plainfield exit on the right hand side of the road.
This place has great beers, wines, mead and cider that all has been made on site! The beer staff is helpful and will give you samples to help you further make up you mind. They will also give you suggestions based on your beer style and palette (which I find to be quite helpful!).
I am a big fan of all of their beers; however, there is one beer I know that I can always guarantee to welcoming me in and that is the Hazelnut Stout on Nitro. It is oh so creamy and delicious with a hint of hazelnut coffee flavor. It I can honestly say is like no other beer that I have had before!
The atmosphere is easy and laid back, cozy sitting downstairs, upstairs and in the beer garden is wonderful (though, I prefer it without snow). Free popcorn is a favorite of mine and by the looks of it several others too. Everyone is very friendly and you can always be sure to start up a conversation or just relax with a great beer.
Free popcorn! Â Why not free beer too???
Environment kind of like Cheers, where everybody knows your name. Â Except better beer. Â Ken & Scott whip out awesome brews, ciders, wines and meads! Â The Meads are their specialty in my book. Â They also do great with Nitro brews. Â
Never disappointed with the beer here, and the friendly folks who hang around. Â
The place is cozy, downstairs, upstairs, and the beer garden is pretty neat too. Â
Hard place to find, once in awhile you can spot it from the highway, wondering, how do you get there! Â Signs to the place are kind of small and hidden too. Â This place is pretty much word-of-mouth.
Highly suggest getting out there!
A little brewpub in a former hot tub place. Ten or so good brews on tap plus wine & cider. The only food is popcorn, but you can order pizza from Fred's.
Tiny, wood and stone, shuffleboard upstairs and horseshoes out back. Â If you miss the feel of the old Founders, you may like it here.
