We came here in search of a quick lunch, and had our hopes up. The place has decent lighting and was kept clean. Our service was good, though there were only one or two other tables seated. The food is where Hirschbeck's falls short.
Overall, it's your typical bar food - nothing new under the sun. Simple institutional, pre-packaged and frozen fare. The one real downside was that it was pretty clear that the oil in the deep fryer hadn't been changed in quite some time. When the fried food comes out dark brown instead of a light, golden brown, then that's some pretty old oil. Other than that, our meals was just OK. I'd say that the focus of this establishment is on the bar, with the food being a secondary consideration. Not bad, just manage your expectations.
Decent wings, yummy fries... Pizza looked delicious. Rib eye with mashed potatoes and green beans was also off the charts. This is the only reason I'm giving it two stars- the service alone should dictate one star.
I saw someone eating chocolate mousse cake and it looked outstanding, so I ordered a slice. The bartender came back to me and told me they were out of it, so I asked her what other desserts they had. Instead of handing me a menu or rattling off a list, she took off into the kitchen. Through the open area of the kitchen I could see her dousing something with chocolate syrup. That "something" turned out to be my dessert. She put it in front of me with a flourish and said "i found some! And I even decorated it myself!"
What she put it front of me was an over-dressed, soupy pile of slop, and NOT the delicious looking slice of cake Id seen the woman near me eating earlier. It was clear to me that "out of chocolate mousse cake" just meant they were out of DEFROSTED chocolate mousse cake, because what I was given had clearly been thrown on the microwave. To cover this up, she poured on a mound of whipped cream, doused it with chocolate syrup and dusted it with cocoa powder. The cake itself was disgusting. Soupy and warm on one side, cold on the other and with a very strange texture. Thankfully they took it back without issue and took it off my bill, but why even go to that length to begin with? I DID ask what other desserts were available.
And never mind the fact that the service is DIRT SLOW. The bartender was a young girl who rolled her eyes and looked fed up/ disgusted at every request a patron had. She routinely walked right past me when I was trying to get a drink and I noticed her hiding behind the bar or to one side of the bar when there were people trying to find her for drinks. Â To her own admission, she was 25, but if you're working for tips, you need to learn to cut the attitude and turn on the charm.
I was there with the band, so I was in for the long haul and in no real hurry for my drinks... But several friends who came out waited far too long for drinks in a mostly empty bar - and some even got fed up and left.
My chocolate mess cake not withstanding, they seem to have a pretty good product here, food wise (seriously, the rib eye was AWESOME). I hope they shape up their staff, because it's going to be the shoddy service that keeps people away.
Have been there a few times, and while the atmosphere fits a sports bar type, the service could not have been more horrible. Â I cut them some slack after the first time, thinking they were just working their kinks out, but after going back three times (2 of which the bar was mostly empty) and still receiving poor service, I am not expecting any improvement. Â Staff stood in the corner talking, ignoring customers. Â I waited over 10 minutes for a drink, at which point I watched the bartender laugh and talk for another ten before she actually poured the beer. Â Mentioned to the manager that an elderly gentlemen had been waiting as well for a drink, even longer, and she ignored him to the point where he left frustrated. Â She walked right by him multiple times without even greating. Empty glasses and dirty plates were left at empty chairs for extended periods of time. Â The place could have potential, but maybe after they clean house and have some real service professionals in there. Â The two times I did eat the food however, it was fine.
Review Source:I was excited to learn that there would be a sports bar/restaurant in Shelton. (Hirschbeck's) I took my family there Saturday afternoon for lunch. Well it was not as I expected. It is more like a restaurant with a sports theme. Not much in the way of sports memorabilia. Unfortunately we were also disappointed in the food. My wife ordered a roast beef sandwich. It came overcooked and very pully. She couldn't eat it. My son's chicken tenders were good, but the seasoned fries were tasteless. I ordered a burger that was supposed to come with gorgonzola cheese and mushrooms. The burger was fair but it came with american cheese and lettuce and tomato. Even though I ordered the caption that was on the menu. I spoke to the waiter, and he had no clue. He told the kitchen who told him he was supposed to ask me how I wanted it it. I guess the menu descriptions mean nothing. I will give them another chance in 6 months or so, if they last that long.
