Mashed potatoes were awesome.
Gravy was plain but my sister thought it was great...good texture, just not rich-tasting.
Red beets (I hate them in all forms) my dad loved and took home the leftovers.
Chicken was perfectly fried and very moist inside but there was no flavor to the breading. I'm a fan of the way they cut the breasts.
Biscuits were very good.
Butter was soft.
Apple butter was delicious (we brought home the leftover).
Tomato-based soup with chicken and rice was loved by all.
Green beans were nice and bacon-y.
Corn was just corn.
Salad was fresh iceberg (only). Opinions were split on the dressing-fairly plain (I hear...I despise lettuce).
Cottage cheese was the good kind, not the chalky-textured kind.
Ice cream promptly arrived when we had finished and we had fun customizing our sundaes from the caddy of mint, chocolate, and butterscotch syrups.
Where else can 8 people go for dinner and be walking out the door, well-fed, un-rushed, and happy in less than an hour and a half? Service was very attentive and our waiter was a nice guy, everything arrived very quickly yet not before we were ready for the next course. He was sure to ask how we wanted the checks split, and our waters were never down below half. The decor is something else. There are indeed hollyhocks painted on all the walls and lots of flower, candles, and lace. It reminds me of "grammy's house". You're drinking out of antique-looking blue goblet-type glasses. Cute place. It isn't the best food I've ever had, but the experience was very good overall. The family had a good time, and all the families around us seemed to be having a good time too. I thought the $18.95 price tag was fair for soup, salad, complete dinner, dessert, and drinks.
This was a "compromise" choice for Thanksgiving 2011. We arrived timely for a late seating (7:00 pm - we understand this is considered a late dinner in the Midwest). We had opted for ham rather than turkey. Â It was dry, sparse and it was necessary to argue with a recalcitrant waiter to acquire two additiional slices of ham - multiple times! He was more than happy to plop down enough potatoes for a party of 8 but for a reason that was never explained, was simply not able to provide more than 2 thin slices of meat at a time (when we WERE able to get his attention and specify our requirements). The whole dining experience left me very uncomfortable: poor, unresponsive service (even with consideration given to the fact that it was a holiday), mediocre food, below average atmosphere. We had been here a few years earlier and had had quite a pleasant experience (also for Thanksgiving). Â Bottom line: inexpensive, but not worth even the moderate price.
Review Source:I came here with a lot of family. We were visiting from California and it turned into a mini-reunion. The food was great, family style is always good, and there was plenty of it. The staff was very attentive, my water glass was never empty. The place has a very cool atmosphere. I had a great time!
Review Source:This restaurant is perfect for a grandparent's bday party. The food is bland, decor is what my husband described as 'funeral parlorish', but it did have the slower pace & old world charm that seemed very popluar for big families with 90 year old bday parties. So for that I offer a 2 star. Otherwise, the food was overly priced and not memorable. Granted our server disappeared after she dropped our food, and after 45 mins we finally went to hostess stand and said we wanted to leave, NOW. We had flagged down several people to ask for help. It was busy on a Friday but completely unacceptable. For everyone who gives me a speech on fried chicken and mashed potatoes. This isn't the only game in town. I've had better for cheaper at several local places. Sorry, I know people swear by this place but I don't understand the appeal for the price. FYI, the sides are set so there isn't much variety. I don't like tomato juice or beets. If that is your preference, then give it a try.
Review Source:Great place for a family dinner. Chicken was delish and we were so stuffed after dinner. They give you so much food from beets, salad, bread, corn, green beans, tomato shooter, fresh veggies, mashed potatoes, and ice cream. Take note, all of those are includes in your choice of entree. Such a good deal!
Review Source:Absolutely the best food I've had in a very, very long time! This home style served restaurant is perfect for family gatherings. I'm a huge fan of the friend chicken, and recommend that you not only have a salad, but purchase a bottle of their home made dressing to take home with you. The atmosphere is quaint and charming, and I love that the wait staff is just as charming. I will 100% recommend this restaurant to anyone who ventures up to the north side looking for a delicious meal!
Review Source:A word to all you 2-star caviar jockeys out there: if you can't appreciate simplicity, Â you're not ready for complexity.
Hollyhock Hill's food is simple, yet expertly done. Fried chicken, pickled beets, mashed potatoes and green beans? Easy to do, difficult to do well. They do it well, and without elevating it to unnecessary heights. The perfect combination of the comforts of home and old-fashioned elegance.
This meal was one of the best on a trip that took us to New York, Philadelphia, Chicago and Indianapolis, eating at two good restaurants a day for three weeks.
A good nursery rhyme beats a bad epic poem every time.
I eat here when I visit Indy because...
I can eat at any number of gourmet foofy-foo food places back in Chicago but come here to enjoy a tradition in basic comfort food and service that hasn't changed in 80+ years.
This is one of the cleanest restaurants you'll ever eat in.
The servers are the friendliest you will ever encounter. Â They wear goofy smock things--yes, they're called uniforms. Â Pretend it's dinner theater, and the servers are wives of a Mormon cult leader. Â kidding
The food is tasty, simple and cooked by people who don't add fifteen ingredients to make you think you're eating nouveau cuisine. Â Everything here is prepared on the premises...even the pickled beets.
They keep the prices a little high to keep out the Church's and Popeye's crowd.
I love this place. Â It couldn't exist in Chicago. Â Need a place where you can take your grandmother--this is it. Â She'll love you and wonder how the heck you knew about this place. Â She'll cut the other grand kids out of the will and leave it all to you.
YES, it is comfort food. Â If you need truffle oil or balsamic vinegar to make you happy, there are plenty of other places to eat.
Where else does one price get you a four course meal for $20? Â And that dessert course is fun. Â Who else offers you creme de menthe as one of the ice cream toppings? Â Who else starts your meal off with a small glass of tomato juice?
That's what I love most about this place: there is truly nothing else like it in Indianapolis and maybe even the Midwest.
Hollyhock Hill is chock-full of Midwestern charm! Â Family-style (big platters and bowls of delicious food). Â Everyone in our family prefers white meat, so we specify that when making reservations. Â Speaking of reservations, MAKE THEM... especially if you're going for lunch.
I know people who don't eat meat with bones in it, who make an exception ONLY for Hollyhock Hill's fried chicken. Â Same goes for their beets... even beet-haters love the beets at Hollyhock! Â
In warm weather you'll get cold tomato juice before the meal, and in cold weather, expect tomato soup instead! Â I didn't notice any previous Yelpers mentioning dessert, so I'll let you know... everyone gets a dish of vanilla ice cream, and the server brings a caddy with chocolate, butterscotch, and mint syrups so you can top your ice cream as you like it.
Folksy murals of hollyhocks on the interior walls, pretty grounds. Â You can buy a bottle of their light, sweet salad dressing to take home with you... or to send someone as an Indianapolis souvenir!
This place is a lot of fun to go with your family, but makes no sense otherwise. Â The food is decent, but not memorable (except for the apple butter.... mmmm apple butter). Â The all-you-can eat feature is a Hoosier's dream. Â If you take your parents/grandparents it might become a family tradition.
Review Source:I don't get it...
I think you must be 60+ to really enjoy this place, it was good, not amazing, and the fact that they called my aunt to see how many people would be eating chicken that night seemed strange. Â You're a chicken place, prepare to cook LOTS!! Their outfits are a bit distracting, blue romper dresses with white turtlenecks?? Â I'll give them that the chicken was pretty tasty, not super tasty though. I'm more of a broasted fan myself. Â The apple butter and green beans were the highlight of my meal. Â Oh and for my mom, dad, sister and I it was $180 with tip - kind of a rip off to me considering our bottle of "Bella Sera" was $16....
Walking in here is like taking a trip back in time. Â The decor has not changed since the 1940s. Â It is "home cookin', which is fried chicken, corn, and mashed potatoes. Â I personally would not go here again, just because it's not my kind of food. Â However I would bring my parents here. Â They love this stuff.
Review Source:If there was to a meal that you could call Indians, then this place would serve it! It is straight forward meal from the heart land! All the components of the meal make it work, while none stand on there own as the star! I have had better fried chicken, but not with the rest of the items. I have had better mashed potato's, but not with the rest of the items. I have had better green bean, corn, biscuits, but not with the rest of the items. I do believe that the pickled beets are some of the best I have ever eaten in my life!
Is this the best that Indian has to offer, no! But it is the bestplace to get all of the items together and in a wonderful setting like the Hollyhock, the place is like a snap shot from the past with a charm all its own.
Yes it may seem like a place for people over 86, but doesn't your grandmother fit into that age group, and what batter place to eat fried chicken than at your grandmothers?
Remember to eat well and live well! And please no chains!
Hello yummy comfort food. Â The fried chicken, mashed potatoes, and biscuits are DE-Lish! Â Oh, and put the apple butter on the biscuits. Â I'll be shocked if you only eat just one.
This place is a great comfort food family dining spot. Â A perfect place for my friend's wedding rehearsal dinner.
If you like good ol' home cookin' and dig midwestern favorites like fried chicken, mashed potatoes and green beans, this is about as good as it gets.
Meals are served family style, and it works really well for big groups, as the servers will continue to feed you as many sides as you want. They also have a bar and will bring you cocktails to your table.
The fried chicken is outstanding and I would highly recommend getting it. It's best to have a reservation if you have a big group. There is parking onsite, and worst-case scenario, in the nearby neighborhoods.
Great place to go with the extended family when everyone's together.
