Hugos is always the first place I take new visitors to Fayetteville. The menu is diverse, but it is the location and atmosphere that makes it unique to Fayetteville. It is located in a basement and was the first restaurant I ate in when I came to Fayetteville in 1996, so it has sentimental value to me as well. I highly recommend Hugos for good burgers and fries.

I thought this place was outstanding in every respect. From the atmosphere to the quality of the food, I was very impressed throughout my experience here.

The blue burger was, as advertised, as good a burger as you will find...anywhere. The house cut fries were great. I loved the guac. The cheese tray was good. My wife and daughter probably misordered a bit but they were still pleased.

If there's a better restaurant in Fayateville, I'd like to see it.

    Smiley face and a star.

I just ate at Hugo's Tuesday evening this week.  I enjoyed an excellent char-grilled burger and fresh-cut fries.  I grew up in the area but haven't lived here since 1979, and even longer since I had eaten at Hugo's.  The food was great, just as it always was in my youth.
Price rating below depends on what you order.  You can stay in $10 range easy enough, but can easily go beyond depending on your taste, appetite, and maybe "thirst".

Hugo's is a personal favorite of mine, even though I don't get there very often.  If you can get beyond how packed it always is, it's a great place.  I love the atmosphere and even with as laid back and unimpressive as it is, it really is a great casual date place (even for the married folks like me!).

I've tried several things here and, honestly, have never been let down.  Their burgers are great and I love the house cut fries.  Service is always good and I've never left disappointed.

The location is very "hole in the wall", which I love about it.  I'm a fan of those type of places, for some reason.  They rarely disappoint.  This place has character and great atmosphere.

Smokey Burger! - Might be the best burger I've ever had!  And that's saying a lot because I've had HUNDREDS of different burgers over my lifetime.  They wouldn't let me and my bro eat at the bar - some B.S. story about it slowing down the kitchen...  they lose a star for that one.  But it's still very good, staff is great, and it's just generally a fun place to slam down some great pub fare.

Great place, with great food! wish there was a bit more lighting, though.
Definitely get a burger here sometime!

A Fayetteville staple! Fresh cut fries, daily specials, great options, fun atmosphere, amazing burgers, sandwiches, soups and much more!

I've never had bad service the many times I've been. Good beer selection to go along with the best burgers in town, hands down! Part of their charm is that it is downstairs! Before and after all Razorback games, this place is packed! At lunch during the week, this place is packed! Be warned, they're closed on Sundays, so no hangover burger for you.

If you're in Fayetteville, this is a must for a fun, casual lunch or dinner!

Delicious hamburgers. Kettle chips. What more is there to say?

Maintaining a 4-star rating, after frequenting this spot about a dozen times since my first review. The service is generally pretty good and pleasant. Great beer selection. Truth be told, the only thing I've ever ordered is the jalapeno burger...it's that good. The fries aren't quite my cup of tea, but that's OK. This is the best burger I've had in the area. Everyone I bring here from out of town leaves happy.

Hugo's seems to be a local favorite, so all things considered I was a little disappointed. On the positive side, I love the location - it's in the basement of a building in Fayetteville's historic downtown district, right off the sidewalk, which gives it a nice, cozy "feel." The burgers really are very good; well seasoned, juicy, and perfectly cooked. It helps that they have more options that the usual rare/medium/burnt. Other than that though, the guacamole was severely underwhelming, and the beer selection is nothing more than standard.

It's not a place I would say is worth a long wait (I've heard it can get *very* crowded), but it's definitely a decent spot to grab a burger and beer.

When I lived in Fayetteville, I'd usually take my out-of-town visitors here.
None of them were ever disappointed!

When I wanted to be a bit healthier or even go vegetarian, I'd order the spinach or mushroom crepes. YUM.
If I was feeling a little more rambunctious, I'd get a burger. A big, delicious, juicy cheeseburger. Omg. (I think I've tried every burger they have. All of them are delicious.)

It can get super-congested if you go at prime time, though. I've been run into several times while waiting for a table and even had my table knocked into by a few backsides while I was eating.
    Eh, I'll take it.

    Burgers! Crepes!

Lots of vegetarian options: at least four different veggie sandwiches/burgers, a cheese board, veggie crepes, and lots of appetizers to choose from. All very tasty. Atmosphere is fun and subterranean.

    A bit of a disappointment.

I have eaten here about three times, and though I wouldn't be opposed to going back, I wouldn't make a special trip for it.

This is what the locals call "the best burger in Northwest Arkansas," and I couldn't disagree more. You're average franchise grill restaurant (e.g., Chili's) is as good or better. Their fries are good, and portion size is average.

The price is reasonable, and the service is fine.

I like the atmosphere. It's in the basement of the building, below street level, with stairs going down from sidewalk level. It's dark and feels like a speakeasy or jazz club.

Overall it's nothing special. If you're in downtown Fayetteville and in the mood for  a burger, this is worth a try. The location is more impressive than the actual food, but I would consider it a little bit of a landmark Fayetteville restaurant based on that strength alone. Check it out.

You'll probably be referred here by a local b/c everyone in Fayetteville loves Hugo's.  My favorite items are the Tuna steak followed by a Grasshopper.  It's pretty dark and a little noisy but it works.  This is one of those places that every few weeks someone will say "what about Hugo's" and the response is "YES".  It's a hit-the-spot type of place.

Went to Hugo's after a recent Hog basketball game. It was busy as usual but we didn't have to wait super long. I had the black and blue chicken sandwich which was delicious-blackened chicken with blue cheese and typical dressing. The hand cut fries were very good. My husband enjoyed a mexican crepe and said it too was good. Cold beers. We left full and happy :). Love the location...don't miss it, its under the street.

One of the local favorite places to eat.... Need I say more.

Get there early because the place fills up.  Its a great date spot.  Amazing Atmosphere and great food,  its in the basement of one of buildings off the downtown square one block from dickson st.

I highly recommend the derek special, cheese dip, and chicken fingers.  Like Rob G said it has one of the best burgers around. which scored 2nd place in best burger NWA. I have never had a bad meal here.

This place was more like 3 and half stars. The chips weren't surprising because it was just like ruffles,

The meat was good, didn't taste like fast food, and the waitress was super nice. The price was ok, Most things cost below 10 bux.

Went here on a Wednesday evening while visiting in Fayetteville. Wasn't really in a burger mood, but, based on reviews, ordered the bleu cheese burger. One bite in and I realized my mood had quickly swung down burger lane. It was a really good sandwich. Gone were all apprehensions about this basement eating joint decorated with estate sale finds. Under the watchful gaze of anonymous portraits of long deceased ancestors of no one in particular, I enjoyed a delicious, juicy hamburger and home style French fries. Thanks go out to previous reviewers who recommended this burger. You steered me straight.

Never been there before. Around lunch time on 8/8/11 I walked in and waited by the door.  When I asked a passing male waiter if I just seat myself I was ignored. Waited a little longer then decided I needed to use the bathroom, but after seeing and smelling the condition of the bathroom, I didn't want to think about what the kitchen looks like. ended up just leaving with not so much as a glance from the wait staff.
Still don't know if you seat yourself or not. Maybe this is a locals only type place, who knows. i was not impressed.

I've been eating here for years, and it's good.  I know a lot of people who just swear by the food, but I've never been too impressed.  The fries are always undercooked, the burgers are just good, and there is almost always a wait around lunch in the tiny dining room.  If you are hungry for a burger and on Dickson st. or the Fayetteville square, you should eat there, but don't make a special trip.

Pretty good beer selection and full bar are nice at this old school burger spot.

I love this place.  I love it now, as much as I did 25 years ago in college.  Surprisingly, it just hasn't changed that much.

This is one of those places that keeps the Funky in Fayetteville (as the locals say).  The food is good - no great.  The sandwich combinations like 'the veggie' really are outstanding.  And their fries are like real, home cut, home style.  They way my grandmother used to do them - seriously.

Good bar on top of all that.

Do be ready for a wait.  Hugo's is usually busy and crowded.  but this is a place I will hang out in the crowd.

I love hugo's, I've missed this place since moving to seattle...

I don't know if they still do it but the beer cheese soup??  AWESOME..although if it were alittle less salty it would be even better..The burgers are pretty damn good too..And it's all super cheap..Can't go wrong with this place.

Oh and if your craving dessert? I had something minty once, i think a grasshopper something or other.....well worth the calories.

If you find yourself in Fayettville (like I did), Hugo's is the place to go. The burgers are cooked to order and deliciously simple. The atmosphere is dark and lit by the glow of classic neon signs, making you feel like you're all in on a secret. The old woods, short ceiling, and kitsch-covered walls add to the brilliance of the place.  It may take a few minutes to find a place to sit, but lean up against the bar and grab a pint, because they've also got a generous selection of beer (for a burger joint).

    I recommend the Jalapeño Burger...yum!

As a new member of the Fayetteville community, I felt it was my obligation to try a Hugo's burger, and it didn't disappoint.

It's a great place in the oldest part of town, where lighting is minimal but atmosphere is high.  The place is always packed but the wait never too long.  I heard the guacamole burger was the way to go, and I even asked our waitress what her recommendation was, so she said to have the guac burger with bacon...so I did...and it was good.  Nothing over the top, but just right.

I like how they served chips instead of fries.  Something different and simple which adds to their character.  They have a decent beer selection too.  Would definitely make another trip there.

Whenever someone visits Northwest Arkansas, there are those must visit restaurants...Hugo's is number one on my list. This little gem of a restaurant hidden in the basement below some non-descript business should not be missed. This restaurant is Fayetteville. You can eat anything on the menu as long as you get the fries, a black and tan, and the grasshopper crepes to finish it off.

You want to taste Fayetteville, this place is it.

    A hole-in-the-wall that's known by everyone.

If a friend is visiting Fayetteville and wondering where to eat I tend to send them here since their food meets a lot of people's needs. Solid atmosphere and ambiance make it a great date place -- especially when the lights are on at the square.

Favorites include the guacamole burger and derek's special. Their crepes are good -- especially the grasshopper crepe which is really 3 crepes filled with mint chocolate chip ice cream. Awwwwesome!

Get there early for lunch (before 12) since it can fill up quick.

Love it! Hugo's is definitely a top restaurant in Arkansas(probably the entire world)! Great burgers! Whether your counting calories or racking them up, Hugo's has something for everyone. Yes, even food for the non-meat lovers.
What?! You can't find Hugo's?! That's because it's under a building. Follow the sidewalk down just after Swift's Jewerly on Block Ave.
Has a nice "old timey" feel.
    Service is speedy and courteous.

    A Must visit!

We found Hugo's thanks to an old hippy who runs a business in downtown Fayetteville.  He highly recommended the place, and I can see why.  Hugo's is located down a stairwell in an area which is currently undergoing construction.  It's a bit tricky to find, but it's worth the effort.

Hugo's is primarily a burger joint, but it offers several vegetarian items, including a veggie Reuben, tomato and avocado wraps, veggie burgers, and veggie nachos, among other entrees.  Our waitress was a vegetarian herself, and offered us several suggestions on the menu.  The restaurant itself gets very busy around the lunch hour, and there were several people present who were ordering vegetarian options.  I'm guessing it is somewhat of a local vegetarian hangout.

I ordered a veggie Reuben with fries.  My girlfriend had a tomato and avocado sandwich.  My sandwich was delicious.  It had tomatoes, onion, swiss cheese, sprouts, and mustard, served on rye.  The fries were fresh and tasty.  My girlfriend's sandwich was also great.  I was very impressed with both the food options and the service we had at Hugo's.

This is a great place to visit if you're in Fayetteville, and there's plenty on the menu for both vegetarians and omnivores.

I love Hugo's more than almost anywhere else in Fayetteville. They have the absolute best burgers in the whole world, the avocado sandwich is AMAZING, and the fries are always fresh and yummy.

It's in the basement of a building, kind of near the record store, and directly across the street from the downtown branch of Arvest bank. Parking can be a real bitch, but it's worth it to find someplace, ANYPLACE and walk to Hugo's.

Get a Blue Moon Burger, or the Black & Blue Chicken Sandwich. Anything with blue cheese really.

We came around 10:45AM and there was already a line for Hugo's. The burgers were decent. Not the best I've had but it was good nonetheless. But how can you really do a burger wrong? Especially when you got a bottle of A1 sauce to spruce it up if needed.

Oddly, the burgers come with potato chips so we ordered a basket of fries. I love hand-cut fries.

I dropped into Hugo's the other day with a couple of colleagues for lunch, and spent much of the lunch wondering why the hell we drove into downtown to sit around and wait for mediocre food at this place. Granted, I've only been there once, and one visit does not a complete experience make...AND I couldn't help but notice the BAR, which work commitments and common decency precluded me from partaking of (the latter is usually not an issue, but again, I had my professional hat on).

Given the circumstances, I think that at least another visit, replete with booze and a full complement of grease (I opted for Derek's Special this time - a rather boring chicken breast-club sandwich type of deal), will be necessary before I can pronounce an official judgment on Hugo's.

I'll bitch a little bit more before I'm through here, though...I like to work some roughage into my diet, and so I ordered a side salad. Said side salad consisted of what I think was bowl of limp romaine leafs, along with a carrot stick. Seriously, one carrot stick. There was one other vegetable, but I can't remember what it was...maybe a pickle or something random like that. Mmyyeah...It might be rabbit food, but don't make feel like I'm sitting in a cage, nibbling away and pooping, wishing I was doing what rabbits do best. One of those water bottle sucker thingies would have completed the effect nicely.

So anyway, don't expect speedy service, and pass on the side salad. Just get a side of grease. And lunchtime be damned, get yourself a pint of beer to wash that grease down. Don't act like that's not what you're there for...you're not kidding anyone.

Hugo's is located on Block Ave, away from the night life on Dickson St. It might be hard to spot when you're driving by, but just park near the strip, look for the Hugo sign and walk down the steps.

I love the burgers here! You don't get your average hamburger. It beats Burger King,  Five Guys, Fuddruckers, Cheeburger Cheebuger, or any other famous burger joint around! Maybe what makes the burgers here so good is the meat, or the bread, or the greasiness. I'm not sure, but either way, I'm a fan! Hugo's also serves crepes. A little odd, but it works! They are great too.

I've been eating at Hugo's since 1984 when I came to Fayetteville for college.  It is one of those great little places that makes Fayetteville what it is.  Can't tell you how many nights we would grab burgers at Hugo's and then walk down to Maxine's.  When you are a broke college student that was a big night out!

Try this place if you haven't!  They have great burgers and sandwiches!  I like the Blue Moon Burger (Bleu Cheese) and the Derek Special (Chicken Breast with goodies).  They fries are awesome home cut and a huge basket!  One basket can serve a table of 4 usually.

    Don't miss the Grasshopper Crepes!

Great food and great atmosphere.  Hugo's IS Fayetteville.

This is a super fun place to go with a medium to small group! It's in a basement, with an eclectic style to it. The food is outstanding! I've never had a bad burger or any dish.

A pitcher of beer is super affordable, and a bottle of their house wine is only $12 or somin cheap like that. Other reviewers put this place as $10-30 per person. But a Berger is only $5-8. Prices are very reasonable, and a couple who's on a budget could easily get out for around $15. Just drink your water ;)

This place has the reputation as a "secret little known place" but that's not the case at all. There was a time that it was but now every yahoo who goes there because they think they know something others don't has ruined it for those of us who really loved it.  About 12 years ago this was my favorite place to eat in Fayetteville.  At that time it was a great place for lunch or dinner because it was always semi-busy but never crowded. I still find myself there every now and again but not by my recommendation.  One recent memory: My sister is one of those trendsters and insisted that I join her and her husband here for lunch one day and about two hours after we arrived we finally got to eat.  I didn't mind so much but the crowd is making it almost impossible to even consider it an option for lunch and forget dinner.

The food is good but there are other restaurants I'd rather eat at than here.  They do have a few selections that aren't available at many other places in town.

My cool Aunt that has lived in Arkansas for the last 30 years took me here.  It's a place she said she went to quite often when she worked nearby.  I was actually in that neighborhood the day before and never noticed it.  It's quite a hidden little secret, the kind of place I love to find.  It's a cute little place with great service.

I struggled to decided what to get as many things sounded good.  I told the server I was interested in the crepes but unsure what to get.  I was deciding between an Italian crepe (similar to a manicotti) or a Mexican crepe (similar to an enchilada) she said they are both good and recommended they give me a half portion of each.  Great idea...  I tried to decide which I preferred but they were both excellent.  Although I make crepes at home, I would have never thought to fill them like this.

The Italian crepe had cheese filling and was covered with a tomato sauce.  I was afraid it would be too heavy but it actually wasn't.

The Mexican crepe was filled with refriend beans and cheese with salsa on top and shredded lettuce.

I wish we had a place like this near my home.  Next time I'm in the area I'll be sure to put it on my list of places to go!

[Disclaimer: I haven't been here in a couple of years].

Perhaps my favorite place to eat in Fayetteville.  Great sandwiches, greasy fries, and a salsa that I couldn't get enough of.   They also have a pretty good beer selection as well.  I used to go there at least once a month.   It can get crowded later in the evenings.

Hugo's is one of those places that gets a cult status in Fayetteville simply for the fact that most people in Fayetteville don't know what a good off the radar restaurant is like. It's not the best kept secret in Fayetteville when it's one of the most popular restaurants downtown.
Now don't get me wrong, I enjoy getting a greasy burger as much as the next guy, but don't be fooled...if it wasn't for the atmosphere of this place, the beer/wine list, and maybe the grasshopper crepes, it wouldn't be such a hip joint.

If you want to piss off the wait staff, order a cheese board. Why they have it on the menu when they absolutely hate making it is beyond me. Also, the cheese board is served with apples and...oranges? I've heard of serving cheese with apples, grapes, pears, strawberries, melon, or even figs...but oranges? Classy.
