This use to be one of the best places for Indian food in the city.  The owners have changed the way the food is made.  That was a bad decision.  I've ate at this place since the very first week they opened.  After several bad food experiences recently.  I am done.  One positive,  the service is really good.  Just too bad the food isn't good anymore.

I live in Chicago and stopped for dinner on the way home. The service was great. The food was good. We had eight main dishes and unfortunately most tasted too similar. I was very good for the area but not authentic.

HORRIBLE!!! This is the worst Indian food I have ever experienced! I have been to well over 20 different Indian establishments here in the States and in the UK. I have had poor experiences before, but this food was by far the worst, completely inedible. I ordered tikka masala, navratan korma, and Aloo Gobi. The tikka masala and korma were tasteless at best.  The aloo gobi was unrecognizable and poorly spiced as well. The only decent part of the meal was the over priced naan. To top it off, the restaurant has decided to no longer carry alcohol, which would have been nice to add SOME flavor to the meal. Save your money or make the drive to one of the better establishments in Indy.

So we walk into this place at 6pm on a Saturday. It's totally empty but with all the reviews it had received I thought we should at least give it a try... I am so glad we did. The food was awesome.. We got the Dinner for Two because we wanted to try a few different items on the menu. The dinner consisted of Chicken Pakoras which are these tasty little chicken nuggets. Loved them with the chutneys. Then came the Chicken Tikka Masala which is one of our favorites so we were happy to say it was delish! Then we got the Tandori Chicken which at times tends to be dry but not this. It was spicy, moist, and fabulous. And it was finished off with the Lamb Curry which was also delish but I'm not a huge lamb person but I did eat it and actually enjoyed it. And we can't forget about the Naan bread which was baked to perfection. We even finished with a little dessert called Gulab Jamun which is actually a cheese morsel  dipped in cinnamon flavored syrup. It tasted just like a pancake in a sweet syrup. It was a great ending to a great meal...

As we were sitting there another family came and and while we were there we noticed that most people get take out. At least 10 people came in for carry out in the hour or so that we were there.

We will definitely be returning to this little gem in Greenwood!

Atmosphere was nice but that was it.  Curry Chicken not cooked properly they didn't soak it in coconut milk.  Tasted like someone just tried to make Indian food and threw some curry in.  As a chef I was very disappointed and have eaten at some of the best Indian restaurants in D.C. would not recommend this to anyone who knows good food.

I've been coming here for the lunch buffet every Sunday for the past three weeks! Drove past here with my buddies on our way to find some ethnic cuisine on the south-side, took a look at the Yelp reviews and decided to try it! India Diner is located in a strip-mall next to Krogers and nestled between a number of other restaurants. They're don't have a website and you can't find them on GPS, so without Yelp we probably would have never gone there.

I have to say we were very surprised at the food quality and freshness! I've had a lot of traditional Indian food and I think I actually liked Indian diner's version better. Featuring a decently wide selection of curries, palaks, and marsalas, The one thing that stood out was that we were given a huge basket of freshly made naan which was constantly refilled and absolutely delicious!

India Diner's dishes are a bit less intense then other Indian places I have gone to. The curries are definitely milder, although some might argue that its less flavorful, I found it to be a lot easier on my stomach. I'm sure frequent diners of Indian fare will agree that partaking in too much curry often leads to long visits to the bathroom!

We ended up only spending around 10 bucks per person. Overall a very pleasant meal!

To whoever posted "Closed on Tuesdays" in their review - thank you. They are. But the other 6 days, this is the place to go for Indian food on the south side.

It's in a strip mall between a Mexican place and a pizza joint and down from a dive bar. Of all the options, this is the one to go with. Great food, good service, competitive prices, relaxed atmosphere.

Yeah, definitely going back again and again!

I actually really liked the aloo vindaloo. It was alright. The server was very nice, and knew what a vegan was and what they can and can not eat.

However, what I came for was the samosa chat, and if you have never had samosa chat, I suggest you immediately find the nearest good source of them and get one at any cost. The samosa chat is a magical creature among appetizers, an authentic and, for some reason, rare beast. This is what real Indians think of when they think of samosas, and why they don't like the ones you eat. It's a samosa with a less-saucy scoop of chana masala dumped on top with sliced red onions as a garnish and then yogurt or no yogurt depending on whether you are vegan or not. It is the best thing that has ever happened in the history of the world. When you have your first good one, you will want to eat nothing else for a week, possibly longer. And this is where this visit went from awesome to a-ok, because the chat was lame.

I ordered one, possibly drooling at the time, and proceeded to stare intently at the kitchen area without blinking until it emerged. What came back to me was a kind of re-fried seeming samosa; very tough and chewy, with a very strange recipe of chana masala that must have been made with tomato paste instead of diced tomatoes because it tasted like chick peas in ketchup... it was quite salty and tomato-y but really not much else.

    Bummer! I was so stoked.

I've been wanting to try this place for a while and I finally made it there for dinner tonight.

I don''t know much about Indian cuisine so I ordered the India Diner Special which is kind of like a tasting menu with small servings of 4 different entrees and all the fixings (Tandoori Chicken, Vegetable Pakora, Lamb Curry, Matar Paneer, Dal, Raita, Rice, Naan, and Gulab Jamon).  They give you a choice between Mild, Medium, Hot, and Extra Hot.  I love spicy food, but being my first visit I played it safe and just went for Hot.

My favorites were the Matar Paneer and Dal, followed closely by the Lamb Curry.  Most of my experiences with curry in the past resulted in an overly sweet, soupy mish-mash with some sort of meat that is way overdone and dried out, but I was pleasantly surprised by the curry here.  The lamb was perfectly cooked and succulent and the curry was more savory than sweet.

The Tandoori Chicken was also very good and perfectly cooked, but not nearly as exotic as the other dishes.

The next time I'll have to try the goat biryani that everyone else seems to be raving about on here.

Get the goat biryani, if you want something spicy, flavorful, and unconventional here in Indy. If you ask for it to be spicy, watch out, it sure is hot. One may ask for medium for less heat.

Thumbs up on the Thumbs Up. Food was good, we had the buffet. Service was excellent hence the 4 star review. They accommodated a large group of us and staff was right there to answer questions, clear the table, and bring more carbs! (I love carbs!) If you happen to be close to the southern section of Indianapolis I certainly suggest going here and checking out.

I highly recommend the goat biryani.  Yes, I said goat and recommend in the same sentence.  This was the most amazing dish.

I also thoroughly enjoyed the chicken tikka masala, however, it was outdone by the goat biryani.  The palak paneer was nice, but not the best I've eaten. However, it may have just seemed bland next to the goat biryani.  YES, I know, if you are an English teacher reading my review, you've knocked points off for me over using the words goat biryani, but I could not get enough of this dish (In fact, it was the only thing I took on my second trip to the buffet.)

Oh yes, an the naan. The naan was exceptional. It was crisp and soft at the same time and nice and hot.

The service was attentive. My water glass was never less than half full, and my used dishes were whisked away.

Where there's goat, there are certain to be three things: adventure, joy & Jon.

Goat on a menu, especially here in Indiana, is a sign of authenticity. The cow dominates the landscape of American meals... but really the goat is what a lot of cultures rely on. Caribbean, many African cultures & Indian indeed! Goat meat soaks up and sinks into the spices of Indian food; just like I do!

I'm no expert on Indian food... however I eat it, a lot. Everywhere I've traveled in the US and everywhere I'll ever go, I'm seeking out Indian food. Curry is essential to me, and I like to make it a daily thing. When I moved back to Indy I was pretty down on the Indian options in town... so, I started picking up pre-made jarred curry at markets and cooked at home. Some last minute stops at India Garden have happened, and it's been pretty good, but not authentic; and not Goat!

And here we have at India Diner... goat biryani! Yes! And... goat curry! Yes!

First stop for the Supper Club was this spot, so they set up their dinner buffet. The biryani was as classic as ever and the best I've ever had. It's very accessible, not outlandish, incredibly deep spices -- exactly what I've always known it to be. The curry was crazy complex and it seemed like a concoction of red & yellow curry to create a rich golden curry. The goat meat was so crazy tender in both, especially the curry.

The chana masala was well-spiced and I bet they'd make it even spicier if you'd ask!

I ate some crazy pickled pepper that had a flavor I've never tasted before. The closest comparison would be the philipino almost a chicken chicken egg & tomato dish... weird, I know, but true. I'm not gonna stop anyone from trying anything... just be prepared.

The service was on it for the large party we were in (25?).

And, how in the world have I always missed the fennel seeds by the register? I think I've seen them in bright whites, pinks & greens so I thought it was candy... here it was just the seeds and this boy loves fennel and it's exactly what I wanted!

I spend a lot of my Sundays on the South Side, so I'll be back indeed!

I'd like my review to be a 3.5 & will definitely try it again sometime & order off the regular menu & not the buffet. Service was friendly, attentive, & the dirty dishes were whisked away quickly. The raita was tasty, as was the naan. Loved the crispy, yet fluffy texture of it. The chai was good, but not as spicy as I usually like. The paneer had a good texture, but the palak part of the palak paneer seemed really bland to me. The channa masala was spot on though & even though I thought the onion chutney & mint sauce were a little one-note, all in all the meal was decent. My younger son, who eats meat, declared the chicken tikka masala as really delicious with perfect spices & extremely tender chicken. I wish the vegetarian rice had some saffron in it, but like i said, I'm willing to go again & try their regular menu. Thanks to Alex K. for introducing it to us as the featured restaurant of the first Indy Int'l Supper Club get-together.

My husband and I (and our friend Meghan!) attended the First Indy International Supper Club event tonight. It was hosted at India Diner... India Diner is located in the strip mall (with the Kroger) at the corner of County Line and Emerson... Oddly, even though I am a south sider, I had no idea this place was even there... (Though, since we're being honest... we don't make it over there very often, as we don't want to be sucked into the evil vortex that is the Wal-Mart). Despite that fact, I WAS quite happy to hear about an Indian place that is NOT India Garden.

When we lived in Edison, NJ, we lived just a couple of miles from an area that was affectionately known as "Little India." We had easy access to the most awesome Indian restaurants, shops and cafes. Naturally. Absence makes the heart (and stomach) grow fonder... and ever since we've moved back 6 months ago, I've been fiending for Indian food... but I didn't want to deal with the hassle of eating downtown. This place fit the bill in terms of easy. There is ample (non-parallel) parking, and there is no need to scrounge for change to feed the meter. Yay private parking lots!

Because of a transportation miscommunication, we were late for the event by about half an hour. When we stepped inside, one of the co-owners (the wife half of the husband and wife team who just took over the restaurant) greeted us and asked if we were with the Yelp group. We said yes, but explained that we were quite late and could eat apart from group. She told us they had set aside a section for us, and then directed us to our table. We were seated and she asked if we needed any drinks beyond the provided Indian cola (Thumbs Up!) and water. I ordered a Mango Lassi and forced Meghan to get one too. We were directed to the buffet and dug in.

I definitely have my favorites when it comes to Indian food (Chicken Makhani), but the Chicken Tikki Masala was a good substitute. Honestly, if not for the fact that Chicken Makhani is listed on the menu as a separate item, I would have assumed they had just mislabeled it on the steam table. I will have to order it in the future to see how they actually differ from one another. Overall, I would say that the food was really good. I'm used to a little more spice, but I figure they were playing to our sensitive Midwestern palates. I grabbed a take-out menu, and they do custom spicing on normal orders (as opposed to the buffet), so that's good. The naan was tasty, but could have been a bit more fresh. I also think the steam table lacked variety, but I was assured that on their dinner buffet night (Friday) there is more of a selection. I must admit that I am incredibly spoiled by the buffet that we would often go to in Jersey.  (They had fruits and vegetables carved into FLOWERS, ffs!) I digress.

My mango lassi had a strange taste... almost like there was alcohol in it... which I know was not the case. I couldn't put my finger on it exactly, but I made my husband finish the rest of it. Both he and Meghan seemed to enjoy their food, and my husband commented on how the paneer and spinach dish was extra good.

There was rice pudding and gulab jamun (and possibly some kala jamun, though they might have just been overcooked gulab jamun, but they were definitely darker) for dessert. There was also a canister of hot chai tea. The rice pudding was runny, and tasted a lot rice krispies that had been soaked in milk, and then sugared. I guess that stands to reason, but I didn't think it was all that appealing.

The gulab jamun wasn't fresh at all, and maybe it was just because I wasn't at the buffet at the right times, but they seemed to be chronically out of them. I ended up eating one kala jamun and one half of a gulab jamun. I was kinda disappointed because the best thing about gulab jamun is the texture. You take a bite and squish it between your tongue and the roof of your mouth and let the sweetness ooze (for lack of a better word) out of the spongy sweet. But tonight, there was no oozing.  :(

The service was pretty good. The dirty plates were removed promptly and they were very accommodating and efficient with everything in that respect.

We also spoke with the co-owner (again, the wife half) as we were paying. We asked if they planned on adding any Indian sweets to their menu (particularly gajar halwa, which is this awesome carrot pudding stuff!). She said that she and her husband have just taken over (which we knew)... but that she is pretty sure he plans on adding some sweets (including my carrot pudding) to the menu. So I was decently stoked about that. She was very, very nice.

The prices listed on the take-out menu were in the 10-15 dollar range for most entrees... Though I have no idea how much food that includes, so I have no idea if it's a good deal or not... but I love that they have carry-out... so perhaps I'll update when I know more about that.

I think that just about covers... EVERYTHING. And I do mean everything.  :)

Alex K is correct; this little spot is worthy of a special trip. It is situated in the same strip mall right next door to Brozinni's Pizza, so maybe someday soon they'll wander into each other's kitchens and conjure up a masala pizza or saag paneer calzone or something.

Speaking to the authenticity/quality of the fare, it is worth noting that there is a signifant Asian Indian community in Greenwood-- many who either work up north at Lilly or down in Columbus at Cummins.  In other words, they often serve as rehearsed a palate as you may find in metro Indy and their menu offers both northern and southern traditions.  All the standards are there.  of particular note, do not shy past the goat-- the goat curry is pretty darn standout spectacular. Soooo tender and no 'old goat' taste. If blindfolded you might even mistake it for beef tenderloin. ok, maybe that's pushing it. but you get my point. Raita and cucumber mint sauce compliment it perfectly.

Aforementioned Chicken Biryani is indeed moist and flavorful. Unconfirmed, but would venture the rice is cooked directly in broth in a pressure cooker, that may be the trick. just a guess. Now it is not the best i've EVER had-- which, for what it's worth, can be found at any of the numerous taxicab dives in the Tenderloin district of San Fran-- Naan n Curry, Shalimar, etc etc-- closely followed by hawker trucks in NYC and then Devon Ave in Chicago-- but at any rate, this is the best I've had here, definitely.

Instead of laying out limp naan on the steam table, they personally bring it to you fresh from the kitchen shortly after you are seated. So it's all hot and crispy and chewy and fragrant all at the same time. wonderful.

Swift and frequent water refills and wipe-downs at the buffet line.

Very courteous service.  Though from all the times I've been it almost seems carryout business is practically more popular than dine-in.

Their menu and coupons are available at the very cool coupons4indy dot com website.

    GO HERE !!!!
This restaurant has just changed owners last week. Luckily there is only one other review so far.

The person taking over is chef Suhel Anwar. He makes the best Indian food I have had period. I have been following him around for about 8 years or so ever since he worked at the meat department at International Bazar. Back then he used to prepare one dish...biryani.

His biryani is unmatched. I have tried it at tons of places all around the country and  have yet to find another king. It is moist and flavorful. To me it's the single dish that showcases the masterful balancing act that spices preform in Indian cuisine.

Let us not forget everything else on the menu. Homemade paneer, fall off the bone goat, deserts to die for, chai tea with true flavor. I can not say I have a favorite here as everything is so good. My usual order is just to make whatever he feels like that day. A few things that are always good are the goat curry, malai kofta, and palak paneer.

The nan is always fresh and usually too hot to hold. It comes in several varieties and you can also get roti. If you go here for the lunch buffet you usually get a fresh basket (but if not you can always ask for it).

Onto the experience of dining here. I usually find Indian restaurants to be cold and impersonal. Suhel goes out of his way to make you have an extra special experience. His staff is quite small right now so he might get stuck in the kitchen at times. At any rate tell them that you herd of the place from me and you will be treated as family.

As most other Indian places they have a lunch buffet and they also have a Friday night dinner buffet.

Man, I'm so excited that Suhel once again has a restaurant. Overnight I now have a new favorite restaurant in Indianapolis.

I've eaten Indian food before and thought India Diner easily measured up to all the other places I've eaten.  I take friends and family there occasionally, and I eat the lunch buffet about once a week on my own.  My favorite are the Tandoori and butter chicken dishes.  The dish with chick peas is excellent, as is the one with legumes.  Layout is very clean and service is great.  I've compared notes with neighbors who've eaten there and they love it too.

I went here while meeting up with a large group of people for the Sunday buffet.  They were very accommodating to the large group, which was very nice.  The restaurant seems to be family owned and staffed, and were attentive as far as clearing dishes and filling water (quite necessary when it's buffet-style).

The buffet was okay, the green beans seemed to be out of a frozen bag, and could have been made at home really easily.  The butter chicken was however very good, which I was happy about.  The other items in the buffet were just so-so, spinach pakoras were decent.  Overall, it was not the best I have had, not bad either, but could have probably found it better at home or elsewhere.  I also ordered a mango lassi, which I really did not like.  The taste was bittersweet in a bad way, possible too much rose water? (and I've had many mango lassis in my life.)

The decor was very simple, some decent paintings/prints, but the other decor seemed picked up from Linen and Things or the sort.

The price of the buffet was good, I believe it was $7 without the coupon.

Overall the experience was not bad at all, I feel like I can't give more stars though because the average-ness of the food, and the many other options in the city.  Also because I think the restaurant, if it wants to succeed, needs to find its "identity."
