Went here for my birthday on Friday night and was really looking forward to a great dinner. The menu looked promising and I've heard really good things.

I was greatly disappointed. I ordered the short rib. Where do I even begin to describe all of the culinary fails that were made. First off the short rib was dry. No sauce. Just some pickled onion that was a poor attempt at pickling. How do you not serve some type of sauce with a short rib? It also lacked seasoning. The risotto was the worst risotto I have ever had in my life. It was extremely overcooked and had no depth of flavor. Where was the cheese? It was not creamy at all and was just a blob of starch.

My friend ordered the duck med rare and that too was tough and lacked any type of seasoning. I don't know if this was an "off" night (we all have them, I know) but there is no excuse for the lack of heart that was missing from these dishes. It seemed as though the kitchen was just trying to push the plates out without no real sense of care.
Usually I would give a place another try but I don't think I will with the Iron Forge.

SO YUMMY! I can't believe the overall rating is only 3.5 stars.....how can this be....

I loved the appetizers, we had mushroom ragout (AMAZING blend of flavors) and the scallops crudo (SO fresh and jumbo)

Main dish of surf and turf and pork chop were great too. Every corner of our plates were scraped clean.

Service was attentive, environment was unique. Will DEFinitely come back despite the distance from my home.

I fell in love with this place all over again Saturday night.  It was wonderful!  I had the Caesar salad, and skate dish, which was different and well prepared.  The wine by the glass is a steal, and generously poured.  We love the atmosphere, nothing beats it for romance.  I should add that maybe we are a bit biased, since we were married here several ago, but it is a special place. You will not be disappointed!

The only explanation I can see for anyone giving this place a bad review is that I suppose every restaurant has its off nights.  The IFI is a beautiful, delicious restaurant - my all-time favorite - and the food, service, and atmosphere are all top notch.

Drive up route 17A, the main route up Mt. Peter connecting Route 17 with Route 94, and drive down a well-populated residential side street.  (In other words, not "the middle of nowhere".  Maybe it is for NYC folks, but these are the same people who would call Warwick "Upstate".).  Towards the end of the road you will find this charming little converted 18th century home.  Step up onto their cozy rustic covered porch, smell the scented candles and admire the antiques before you come into the reception and bar area.  The owners are at the hostess desk and behind the bar and they will greet you and seat you with a smile.  You might be seated in a cozy room by the fireplace or in a glass-enclosed porch allowing you to view the beautiful sights outside.  Everything is beautifully decorated with antiques and artwork done by the owner.

Once you are seated your pleasant and accommodating waitstaff will secure you with menus, wine lists,  drinks, and a complimentary amuse bouche. Peruse the wine and specialty cocktail list while you enjoy a warm roll and whipped butter.

Once you order your appetizer you will get a feel for just how creative this menu is.  Try a warm tomato-mushroom ragout with cool truffle custard.  Try anything with gnocchi.  The chef has an affinity for dumplings and there are many forms of them throughout the menu.  Have one of the creative soups of the day.

Entrees are hearty, creative, and beautifully presented.  The chef will surprise you with some of his interesting uses of sauces and spices (imagine 5 spice mole or vanilla infused ratatouille).  The chef uses many locally sourced and seasonal ingredients.

Desserts are made from interesting twists on the classics like a rainbow of creme brûlée flavors, bread puddings with season fruits, or unique cheesecake.  The chocolate plate is a must for chocolate lovers, but don't miss the banana dessert either.  Ice cream is supplied by the nearby Bellvale  Creamery, where the delicious homemade ice cream ingredients are sourced from its own dairy farm.

If this place is so great, why only four stars?  It's only because after all the years I have been coming here for special occasions, I am not always surprised by them.  It used to be that every time I came here it was a different menu.  The basics would still be the same (short ribs, pork chops, salmon) but the style and the sides were always different.  The last time I ate there was the first time I saw a different preparation for the short ribs in a year or two.  I also waited a long time to see any noticeable changes in the appetizers.  The menu used to change more with the seasons than it does now.

I encourage anyone and everyone to try this place for a delicious, friendly, and comforting experience.  I am just docking the one star to remind the chef to stay on his toes and keep doing that innovation and keeping up that creativity that truly places the IFI above all other restaurants.

So much potential...great building, great ambiance, dining rooms, tap room...but food is just unimpressive. Too bad. Kitchen needs to step up.

Last night we had our wedding at the Iron Forge Inn.  We wanted to write this review immediately because we were so impressed by the ambiance, the food, and the service provided by Erik and his staff.  To being with, working with this group was as easy and pleasant as any experience we have ever had, having planned and executed many a large party.  Erik was responsive and thoughtful at every turn.

Our food needs were not easy but Erik managed to accommodate vegan, gluten free, dairy- free, and kosher guests.  The food was locally sourced and was raved about by all guests- from our foodie pals to our picky teenage cousins.  The first course, a salad of mixed local greens, roasted asparagus, and toasted almonds with a carrot and thyme vinaigrette was fresh, crisp and delicious.  The main course, served family style at our request, allowed each guest to pick and choose and eat as much of each item as they desired.  The gnocchi with local mushrooms and spring vegetables was a work of art.  Many thanks to the local forager who literally invaded a rattlesnake den in the process of finding the chicken of the woods mushrooms.    A warm bean & herb salad, ratatouille and brained greens were each delectable in their own right and the roasted salmon.

The atmosphere was Hudson Valley Highlands at its finest.  Fortunately, the rain was fairly limited and Erik had helped us arrange for a tent covering the outdoor patio.  With the Rhododendron in bloom and the fresh air, the atmosphere was just extraordinary.  The staff set up everything for the ceremony and for the post ceremony cocktails, all held out of the patio.  The dinner inside was efficient and well executed.  Guests that had to leave early were given food to go - in some cases full dinner and dessert which consisted of local pies (not enough room to describe the local pies - but wow!) and Bellvale ice cream.

We had multiple guests from Manhattan and well as people from all over the country- the reaction to the facilities, the staff and food was uniformly exceptional.  This is was not the first time we came to eat at the Iron Forge and we will certainly be back whenever we are in the area.

after wine tasting in Warwick valley area we stopped here for dinner upon recommendation from the owner of Clearview Winery.

We enjoyed our meal - fantastic!

    Crispy Duck - amazing

Salmon w/ risotto - this was really good, but the risotto was more of a pilaf and lacked the creamy richness of a risotto - (the owners might wish to edit their menu accordingly)

    Pork Shoulder - yummy

Deviled Eggs - good but I wouldn't order them again, they werent very creative

Herbed Crispy Fries - yum yum yum

    Chocolate Plate - amazing!!!!!!

    Brulee trio - yummmmmmm

We would come back here for sure next time we're in the area.

In a word- dreadful. I say this with a nod of thanks to the wait staff, who are not the root of the problem.  We were welcomed into the downstairs pub early, given a drink, and treated gracefully. The service was attentive and friendly though at times a bit clueless (a waitress asking the table next to us: "Oh... Do the Greeks make olives???") and the ambience, though a bit dusty, has a certain basement type of charm. The beer selection is very limited but at least half decent- Captain Lawrence and a couple of the other usual suspects.

So when did the problems begin you may well ask? Well, the moment the food arrived at the table.

Before deciding to visit The Iron Forge we kept hearing: "well the food is just OK downstairs, but upstairs it is fabulous!!!" Say what? It's the same kitchen! And if the food dowstairs bears even the remotest resemblance to the mediocre glop we were just served in the basement, which I would think it does (coming from the same Chef and same kitchen), you would have to pay me a great deal of money to put it into my mouth--

We started with the walnuts with honey and sea salt. What arrived at the table was a fistful of walnuts in a white bowl with what tasted like, you guessed it, honey and sea salt. What's the problem here? Well it was a lukewarm mess with no effort at proper presentation (yes, it's a downstairs pub but that does not mean you treat your customers like the gladiators in the gallows of the Roman Colliseum!!) And it showed a complete lack of care or imagination! Ever thought of possibly roasting those walnuts and carmelizing the honey? Then perhaps a tiny bit of shredded lime zest for colour and balance and maybe a slice of some nice cooled hard tropical fruit to brighten up the plate?? Color, color, color!!!! It's the first dish arriving at the table!!

Bad way to begin- mushy beige walnuts.

Then came half decent sauted veggies on a grey pewter plate, diced like they were being served to a three year old child, but edible. Again, really bad presentation. Finally came the entrees-- I had a Cuban sandwhich filled with what tasted like very very old pork, ham, and bacon. There might have been a pickle. But calling this Cuban is like calling ME Cuban. I'm Irish thanks, and Cuban food has a little zing and zap!!! My wife had the garlic and herb rubbed pork shoulder with dirty rice and mostarda. It indicates on the menu that the meat has been cooked for ten hours. Sure. And I'm Cuban. When my wife pointed out to our waitress that her meat did not even taste remotely like it had been cooked for ten hours, the response she brought back from the Chef was that "this was a particular cut of meat that she just wasn't aquainted with". Uh, here's the thing, when you cook meat for ten hours it falls off the bone, unless it is some alien creature from Mars that is. I don't care what cut of meat it is. The rice on the plate was merely strange; it tasted a little like it was closely related  to Uncle Ben.

We were offered dessert as compensation, but when the bill arrived realized that in fact only my wife's dessert was complimentary. I had, after all, eaten more than half of my sandwhich (I was starving!!!), so was not part of the complimentary dessert offer. Now THAT, is just tacky!! And laughably bad management. Whoever made that decision, should be asked to get another job-- you saved yourself probably a buck and a half on not comping a piece of cheescake...and you helped to lose the restaurant potential years of business.  And by the way, the dessert was very much like the rest of the meal-- utterly unexeptional.

Now here is the point-- we noticed that when each and every person around us was asked about their food, the response was half hearted and clearly not thrilled-- three other tables, three very similar responses to the question: "How is it?" It is good that the wait staff is trained to ask, but it is transparently obvious that the Chef and owner are not listening to what the customers are telling them in response.

"Good", grunted half heartedly by the guy at the table, is not good folks!!! Most people, especially if they are just tired from a long trip, and disappointed, merely vote with their feet. That's what we intend to do.

We won't be back. Eddies Roadhouse is after all just down the street in Warwick. Now if I ran a restaurant I would walk by Eddies and take a good hard look and ask myself: "Now why is it that that place is always packed with happy looking people???!!!"

Went here Saturday with friends that have gone here before. There are 2 places, the Tap room, downstairs and the resturant up. We were expecting to eat in the tap room which is really charming and very rustic but discovered there wasnt a table avaliable so we went upstairs for a cocktail at the bar whilst we waited for our friends and a table. The tap room has similar food to upstairs but less expensive due to simpiler fare, ie; there was a soup avaliable upstairs which had (i think??) lobster in it where the Tap room soup didn't....interesting but again slightly lower price for the tap room soup......cool! OK, to the point....there wasn't any room downstairs but the hostess who was very nice told us that since they were a bit slower upstairs at the moment that we could sit upstairs and order off of either menu!! (P.S. it did get busy later but we were there a bit early) It was really cool to be able to choose of either menu depending on how adventerous you were with a meal. I had the duck and it was AWESOME, my son had the short ribs....again awesome (can't remember what my wife had....sorry). I highly recommend the steamed clams, they came with a dipping sauce that was super!!! All in all great experiance and great food! Finding this gem isn't easy but worth the trip!!!

Nestled in the woods of Warwick, NY stands the Iron Forge Inn, located in a building, my girlfriend acutely noted, that is older than the good ol' US of A itself (circa 1760).  The building structure practically talks (or complains, if you will) to you in creaks and groans as you tentatively approach it, walking through the gravel parking lot and ascending the sagging porch steps, but you'll find the atmosphere inside lovely, intimate and inviting.  Each dining area is separate from the other (some with working fireplaces! ahh!), making you feel like you're in someone's awesome, cozy, old-ass home.

So now that I've set the scene, and you feel all warm and fuzzy inside and you're seated comfortably at a fireside table ready and waiting for a bellini and a brunch menu, we can get down to business.

As much as I wanted to love it here, I didn't.  I LIKED it.  I like liked it even (remember that episode of Wonder Years?), but couldn't bring myself to love it.  Loved the atmosphere and the history without a doubt, but the overall experience was just good, not great.
    First, the good stuff:
    -the coffee
    -the mimosas
    -the pancakes
-the portion sizes (normally brunch makes me feel like this: O.  Did you get that?  I like to TRY and look like this: 8.  Or this: I.  Never this: O)
-truffle infused brie grilled cheese.  WHAT.
    -le service
    -food presentation

    And now, the bad:
    -no peach bellinis, only apple
-"it's onion country up here" (thanks for that fun fact, Ma!) so there's onions in some variation in like, oh, just practically every single thing on the menu
-YIKE$! thank goodness someone else was paying
-Out of all the dishes I tried I found most of them to be pretty under seasoned.  I was underwhelmed in general with the food, and that's the whole point, isn't it?

It's worth A visit, and if I'm ever in the area, MAYBE I would try the Tap Room, but I wouldn't go over the river and through the woods to eat here again.

I agree with a lot of these reviews. The atmosphere was great; my husband and I arrived without reservations and were sat in the proper restaurant area. The menu read wonderfully, and when the plates arrived they had a lovely presentation. However the food did not stand up. It was fine at best. I was surprised that the Ragout of Roasted Tomatoes & Mushrooms was made with one (rather plain) variety mushroom. My entree, the surf & turf, was similar- looked beautiful but was dull. I can't even remember what my husband ordered.
I would give the tap room a try as I liked the ambiance and the service was friendly, but if you're looking for gourmet farm-to-table you'll be disappointed.

My wife and I decided to celebrate our wedding anniversary at the Inn - we made a 7:30pm reservation at which the reservation taker said I have a table for two in the dinning room by the fireplace ( which would apply to the other three tables in that room) - I thought great - would make it cozy with a fire going - we arrived on time and were seated at one of the four tables in the room by the fireplace with 3 tea light candles going...
The dinner started with plates set for two -then our waitress brought out 2 entree sized plates with the "Amuse Bouche" lost in the center of the plate - don't really understand the thought process behind this - bitter - burnt with smooth goat cheese & herb sticking out of the top - 4 plates to serve a tablespoon of an hors d'oeuvre...really - not impressed - I read a lot of reviews about the charming Inn - we happen to live in a house from the same time period - mismatched dinnerware and worn out carpet do not equal charm!
Friendly waitress - placed our order for a starter of Ragout of Roasted Tomatoes & Mushrooms - ($12) waitress asked if we'd like a second dish to split the starter - yes, we would - the 2nd bowl was twice the size of the starter - the portion was so small - I used my bread plate - speaking of which - two at a table - one roll each - they could have been warmed a bit - tasted like they were right out of a plastic bag. After we placed our order for our entrees (surf & turf - my wife had -  portobella mushroom "en croute") we waited, and waited and waited -the waitress reminded that us that cooking the mushroom takes time(?) she then offered us a choice of salads on the house...you can see where this is going? The entree ticket time was about 1 hour twenty minutes - the foods has to be good? Finally the entrees - waitress said the taste of the food would be worth the wait - surf & turf - quarter sized hanger steak topped with the same sized scallop - amazing - how did they manage to pair the two so perfectly? I was literally thinking - this is a joke right - $32.00 - where's the hidden camera? The joke was on me - it was a joke, bland and bland with a orange bland sauce - my wife's mushroom covered with pastry dough - was average at best - when the waitress asked if everything was good - I commented probably would have been better if we weren't hungry - she apologized & took the drink prices off our tab - where's chef Ramsey when you need him - I was still hungry when we left almost $100 lighter! Save your money! Save your evening - dine somewhere else!

From the way the menu was written, my husband and I could not wait to taste our food. We were still waiting to taste some sort of flavor when the food came- it was so bland.  My pasta with was so bland that I put the butter from the rolls and a ton of salt on it to even slightly wake up my taste buds. The pasta was all stuck together and so thick it was like eating raw dough.
My husband had some pork dish and was not impressed. The only good thing was that we didn't waste money upstairs where the "fine dining" menu was slightly more expensive. I am very sorry to write this- so if you like to gamble give this place a chance but definitely do not go out of your way to try it!

Surprisingly, even thought I have lived in Warwick for 23 years, I have only ate at the Iron Forge twice. Once about 8 years ago with a bunch of my girlfriends and second about a month ago with my parents and BF. Both times have been in the Tap Room, so I have never ate upstairs. Not sure how much different the upstairs is from the downstairs, but I was not that impressed. Everyone raves and raves, but I thought it was just average. Again, maybe it's because they ate upstairs.

The pulled pork sandwich I shared with my boyfriend was extremely dry. Even my bf (who loves just about anything) wasn't that pleased. We also has the smashed potato with blue cheese. We were thinking it would be more like fries with blue cheese on top - we were wrong. It was literally a baked potato that was smashed with crumbed blue cheese on top. Again not that great or flavorful. The only thing that we really like was the gnocchi gratin.

Even though I was not that happy with the Tap Room, I think I will try the upstairs to see if there is a difference. Hey - you never know.

I have been here three times - all for Hudson Valley Restaurant Week - and have had a 3-course prix fixe meal for $29.95 per person. The food is delicious and cooked well and the presentation is unique and special.  I love that the chef always gives you an amuse bouche before you even order.  See my pictures for meals and descriptions.

They have a small wine list but I like that it features wine from three local wineries in Warwick (one is brand new).

This restaurant is a little hidden gem in an old house built in 1760 and it is so neat to be able to sit in the different rooms of the house!  If you like feeling at home in the country, but eating food prepared by a top Manhattan chef, this is the perfect place.

The food and the table areas are nice.  The tap room with the fireplace is the most popular, but upstairs is very nice.  The tap room is not for tall people.  It is located in the basement of an old home with low beams and pipes throughout.

I was really looking forward to a pleasant evening over a luxurious dinner, but was very disappointed with the food.

The service was excellent. From the moment we entered we were greeted with friendly staff who sat us immediately in spite of not having a reservation. The room was warm and amiable...the lighting at the perfect level for romance and relaxation. Our waiter...Ed...was friendly, knowledgeable, witty, and attentive. Good job Ed.

Now...the food. I was really disappointed by the food. I can't find the menu online, else I would lay-out exactly what I ordered by name, but will continue with descriptions that should suffice.

Overall...everything was bland and required salt for flavor. Presentation was impeccable, but flavor was anemic. I'm accustomed to dashing salt or pepper on different items, but everything my date and I ordered required too much to call the food anything except "bland".

I ordered an onion soup with cheese-melted toast (a variation of French Onion Soup) that was (wait for it) bland and watery. I'm used to a hearty stock with this sort of soup, but was disappointed by more of a broth than a stock.

For the entree I ordered a variant of surf n turf, with small steak medallions under scallops. The scallops were delicious and perfectly prepared with a crisp sear on the outside protecting a meaty, tender inside. Congratulations on the scallops. The steak, however, was underflavored and overcooked. I was surprised when Ed took my order without asking how I wanted the steak prepared, but when I saw the presentation, it made sense (given that they were the same size as the scallops). Presentation and creativity were both an A+, execution was a C.

I'm not certain how to explain what I had for dessert. It was a couple of beignets with chocolate sauce accompanied by a (please forgive me for not accurately naming this) a heavy mousse atop a chocolate...hmmm...cookie? It was good. Presentation was awesome...but the flavor was lacking (for chocolate!)

From the food to the room, this place is more about presentation than delivery on food. Service was excellent, but I can get a good room and service in a large number of restaurants with better/tastier food. Sorry Iron Forge Inn...too much buck for not enough bang.

    Dear Planet Earth,

Yesterday I ate at the Iron Forge Inn and it forever changed my life. Words can't even begin to describe the cathartic experience that was the Iron Forge Inn. Never in my 26 years have I experienced something so exquisite, so life changing.

It all began early Sunday morning. It's a tradition in our home to drive two or more hours away for Sunday breakfast, so I gathered up my three children and decided to head up to Warwick.  We stumbled upon IFI after a wrong turn on the highway. Fate.

I ordered the quiche. All I could think about when I took the first bite was "Please God, if you exist, take me now because nothing will ever taste as good on my tongue buds." I was moments away from orgasm.

If you appreciate fine cuisine, IFI should be at the top of your list.

    Love always,

    M

We have been dining here for about nine years on as regular a basis as we can manage. Less often since we moved away from the area although we never go to the area without eating there.  We have always eaten at the restaurant and found the food always interesting, always good, but sometimes FABULOUS. Beginning with the warmth of the greeting from John and Barbara through to the presentation of the check, it is always a special experience. Commend them particularly for the local products they feature, for the beautiful ambiance. We are planning a weekend in Warwick at the end of the month and will surely be there on Saturday night.!

The Iron Forge is possibly my fave restaurant in the Warwick Valley area.  The cuisine is creative and intelligent and perfectly in season.  The service has always been fine and the bar does well too.  I recommend it wholeheartedly if you want something new yet traditional served with grace and a bit of panache. Well worth the trip!

My husband, Mother, and I came here for Mother's Day Brunch on Sunday. I hadn't eaten upstairs in quite some time and was excited to return. We originally had reservations at a chain restaurant but decided on a whim to go to Iron Forge instead. We made the right choice.

Breakfast was unreal. And on top of that a 3 course meal for $29 per person? Even better. My mother and I both started with the fresh fruits while the husband had Crab. Both were delicious. The fruits were not quite at their peak, but it was refreshing none the less.

For breakfast, Mom and I both had the Egg Fritatta. It was made with swiss chard, lemon oil, sweet onions, and parmesan cheese. HEAVEN. The fritatta was more of a crepe and the perfect size. It was light, airy, and full of flavor.

For dessert, I had the chocolate plate while my Mom had ice cream and the hubs and cheesecake.

The chocolate plate - every PMSing girls dream come true. Chocolate ganache on top of a fresh made chocolate cookie with chocolate bread pudding. The sizes were perfect.

The cheesecake - light, flavorful, and the honey drizzle was a PERFECT compliment. They made theirs with ricotta. SO GOOD. It didn't drop in your gut like a lead ball.

The ice cream was from Bellvale Creamery which is a separate review in and of itself.

Check out Iron Forge's brunch. The menu doesn't have too many items (which I prefer) and is the perfect portion.

    YUM

Today was a great day because it started out with a wonderful, delicious, charming brunch at the Iron Forge Inn!
We are from Bergen County, NJ and the ride up there was scenic as usual and where the inn is , felt  like we were in a movie set shooting  a story set in New England for sure...we ate in the sun porch area . I had the corned beef hash and eggs and my husband had the spinach frittata with the locally made delicious breakfast sausages. All was fresh and great!
    Friendly service.
We are definitely coming back and bringing our grown kids and telling friends!

The Tap Room was a warm lovely room with a nice menu, but as I was having a special weekend away with my guy, up to the main dining room(s) we went. I love these old houses divided up into discreet dining rooms. Creaky wood floors, tea lights in old tea cups, just charming and warm.

The food was ridiculous, it was so good. I had a short rib with an onion bread pudding, presented as beautifully as any NYC restaurant, and I didn't need the knife I was brought. It was so tender and flavorful, my fork went straight through it. My boyfriend had a pork shank that was juicy and perfect, served with a pan fried slice of apple.

Service was very good. Appetizers and dessert also good (yummy homemade cheesecake with a polenta crust... oy!) The wine list was only so so, however, and the house pinot the most forgettable wine of a winey weekend on the Shawangunk Wine Trail.

Drive slow coming here at night. You could miss it and find yourself halfway back to New York City.

My future mother in law lives nearby...and let me tell you it is one of our favorite places to dine when we are back east.

First off the historical nature of the building adds the charm of this lil peace.  I'm a huge history nut, so anytime you can dine in a room where the fireplace is over 100 years old, I will eat there everytime.

Have to say, I have only dined in the Tap Room, but the atmosphere down there is hard to beat. Good beer and wine selections as well as specialty martinis.  Entrees are well portioned and flavorful. I have had the burger (tasty and juicy) and the short ribs.  All were prepared perfectly.  Try the mashed taters as they fill your belly with glee.

Desserts are very good as well. Service is friendly and true hidden dining experience. Can't wait to go back!

This would be the perfect place to take your parents for dinner after going wine tasting in Warwick...

Apart from the fact that on a winter night, driving to the historic Iron Forge Inn in the pitch dark was not so fun... I give this place 2 stars for food that was average but would give it 4 stars for the warm ambiance and excellent service -- hence, the 3-star rating overall.

Of note, patrons seem to love it here... We noticed a lot of regulars.

Three cocktails at the bar came out to only $18... And when I asked for more liquor in my drink, the owner happily obliged.
