Hola! Â Or is it, Aloha?
Either way, Island Style Tacos was just... meh. Â Stopped in on a Saturday afternoon. Â ordered a carnitas burrito, the ol' lady ordered a chicken burrito. Â Carnitas was over cooked... mostly dry and a couple of bites were actually burned/charred. Â The chicken, which I tasted, was very under seasoned. Â It tasted like it had been boiled, then put straight on the burrito without any other preparation. Â
Neither burrito was bad. Â All of the ingredients seemed fresh and the tortillas were very good. Â But, both were also layered wrong. Â My burrito was half eaten by the time I got to the carnitas. Â The first half was rice and cheese, then some beans. Â The chicken burrito was the same way... the wifey didn't realize there was cheese on it until the final bites.
Service was friendly and we'll probably try this place again... maybe for the tacos. Â The burritos, at $5.29, are way over priced. Â Had they been $3.50-4.00, everything could have been forgiven. Â But, at over $5, well that's Baja Fresh, Wahoo's, and Rubio's territory... so you better know what you're doing.
Island style catered our wedding rehearsal dinner on Friday evening and they were terrific. Â They set-up the taco cart in our friends yard right on time and served up delicious carnitas, chicken and carne asada. Â We highly recommend using them for private events, Mike and his staff are awesome!
Review Source:Great burritos, awesome blackened items and some of the best chips around (lime salt, perhaps?). Â Love the 8 track player inside with a plethora of amazing music. Â Our food came out very fast, but there was no one in front of us. Â
I gave it four stars instead of five because there's hardly any seating, and a place like this needs to serve beer. Â And if they don't serve beer, how about other options for drinks instead of just a soda fountain?
Tip: The map on yelp showed it closer to Big Lots/Sears -- it's NOT in that parking lot, it's on the opposite side of Camino de Estrella, much closer to the ocean on a corner lot.
Do not book with these guys....they will cancel your party if they book a larger group. Â I was referred to Island Style Tacos from another vendor and after I accepted their estimate I didn't hear back from them for a few days. When I inquired to firm up my reservation, I was told they booked another group....later Mike told me it was for a bigger party since it was the end of summer...he had to do what he had to do. Even if it meant screwing me.
Thanks for canceling a week before my event!
Not bad for this hood of the OC. Let me just say that Capistrano Beach is a culinary deathtrap. Island Style is a decent little surfer taco place. I like their variety of hot sauces. But I think what I really like the best is this places collection of old records and 8 track tapes. The guys let my friend put on the Scott Baio record. What other taco place lets you do that?
Review Source:Mike and Island Style Tacos catered our 150+ guest list at our July 2011 wedding at Heritage Hill Historical Park in Lake Forest.
I found Mike through a friend who has used his Taco Cart catering at several of her own parties and suarays over the years. He was very clear in his communication style, and worked with me on my budget. We even added some extras (quesadillas!) to our menu and tacked on an extra 50 people to our order - Mike handled both with no problem!
He also provided all the condiments I could dream of for little cost, and he even provided clear plastic plates for me (instead of the standard paper-plates, cause come on, after all, it WAS my only weddin' day... the best time to get fancy plates!) Â
Everyone at the reception RAVED about the food - how awesome the tacos were, how yummy the salsa was, and our vegetarian friends appreciated the quesadilla addition.
Miek & everyone at Island Style Tacos - Thank you thank you! Can't wait to work with you again in the future!!
This tiny little place surrounded by residential neighborhoods always seems dead. I drove in on a thursday afternoon craving unhealthy food and ordered a shrimp quesadilla and an asada taco. The asada taco was a little dry but full of meat. The freshly made flour tortilla on the quesadilla was wonderful! They do not serve alcohol but there is a liquor store right next door.
Review Source:Bleh. I'm so done with this place. I went here yesterday for lunch and the record player was blasting. The guy behind the counter was sarcastic and pretended not to hear my order and balked at the fact I wanted the mushroom quesadilla. Do you want me to order food or not?
This time around I noticed subtle nuances like the soda machine being a sticky mess. Ick. The quesadillas were a sloppy mess. The mushrooms were sauteed black and there was a glop of cheese. The taste of it was disgusting and I only got salsa, no guac but at least the salsa was good.
After this experience, this will be my last visit.
I love this place. Â Great food and their catering is awesome. Â They catered my wedding and everyone raved about the food! Â I have also used them for a couple of our parties at my buisness and everyone loved the food. Â I highly recommend the carnitas, but everything I've eaten here is super good.
Review Source:+ Blackened Mushroom Tacos!
+ Breakfast burritos served all day.
+/- Can see into kitchen area which seems not that clean and I am here before the lunch rush. Sort of comforting, though, in a weird on Street Taco Cart kinda way.
- Tiny indoor seating area, also not very clean
- Although there weren't many people there when I was there as it was before the lunch rush, there is a tiny parking lot and I would see parking being an issue.
I recently had Island Style Tacos cater my casual rehearsal dinner. Â It was organized last minute - I called them on a Monday and the event was that Friday. Â Under $200 for 20 people and the food was great! Â It was a huge hit, everyone loved it.
They showed up on time, were professional, friendly, and made a darn good taco. Â I will definitely be using them again in the future!!!
This restaurant is literally right across the street from me. Â So that is obviously a plus. Â The first time I went there I had a carne asada burrito. Â It was really good, the black beans, steak, and sauces really worked great together. Â The second time I went there I decided to order the carne asada and fish tacos. Â To be honest, wasn't that impressed. Â I like my tacos authentic and original, with just the meat, cilantro, onions, and lime. Â Instead, these tacos came with cheese and their own salsa. Â It was still good, just not what I liked. Â I will definitely be going back though. Â
+ = Burritos, Owners are super kool
- = tacos not authentic, no salsa (?), weird hours
The food is awesome - I LOVE their tacos, especially the blackened mahi. I had them cater our football party and booked the taco cart for a shower. The restaurant is great but I especially love the taco cart. Everyone is really friendly - Mike and Mike are the best. AND, I just heard that they're going to start delivering so I'll be eating lots more....
Review Source:The food is good, and if you go during a slow time, they crank it out pretty fast. The two guys running this place are very local and very friendly. It's easy to go back just because you want to say hello to them. Prices are reasonable and it's on a fairly quiet street so you can sit outside and enjoy the sun during the summertime. Unfortunately, it's out of the way for most people that don't live in the immediate area, so I don't know how long it will be around. I've lived here for 5 years, and seen 3 restaurants open and then close out of this same corner store.
My favorite is the local tacos with carnitas. Order at least 3 to fill you up.
