I found the food to be barely edible. Â I order the fried chicken. Â The entire dish came out barely warm and lacked seasoning. Â I stomached the chicken, because I have not eaten all day...but I left the cold mashed potatoes and vegetables alone. Â I also ordered the French onion soup, it was way to salty.
Our waitress noticed I was not eating my food and she asked if there was a problem. Â I voiced my concerns, she told me I should of told her earlier. Â Anyway, I should have gone to old spaghetti factory.
This pub is really nice to visit and they have a friendly staff esp a tender named Chelsey. She knows the ales and pairs them properly to my group at the bar. Food is typical pub food and is fairly good. Ales are always good and change frequently giving me a new feel every time  I visit.
Review Source:Giving it a 3......2 weeks ago I went there and had a great veggie wrap and a ditzy blonde beer......music was great......."Smokin' J's was the group and they played some really neat covers. Last night I went there and a had a Mahi Mahi sandwich and a Ditzy Blonde beer.....Mama Foxy was the band...she has a nice voice but was blown out by the loud guitar and the wild
guy on bongos....I mean it was so loud that it hurt. The Mahi Mahi was overcooked and almost tasteless....but they do make the best cole slaw I've ever had from a restaurant. We ate our meals and left. I'll give them another chance....I'll just make sure to stay away from the "catch of the day" sandwich and hope the volumne is down on the music so that it's enjoyable!
The food is decent pub food. Â I had the Thai chicken salad and it was quite fresh. Originally we were seated inside, but the noise level was so loud that we requested to sit outside. Â It wasn't very crowded, but the combination of the wood floors and uninsulated ceiling caused a pretty significant echo. Â I've been there before when it's crowded and the din reverberates to the point that you literally can't hear the person next to you. Â I think insulation would probably solve the problem. Â I won't be back unless I can sit outside.
Review Source:I live like four steps from this place. Really good healthy portions and great beer! The do live music on Saturday nights, there is always a crowd in there no matter the time of day. Their burgers sandwiches and wraps are all really good, the sweet potato fries are good too, but the onion rings are awesome! Also, great wait staff which goes a long way for me and I love the big wood tables in the place. Reminds me kinda like an old school beer hall from Europe.
Review Source:This is a nice place to hang out with friends and the beers offered are unique. Â They do run out of some of the beers which is disappointing. Â The food is just ok and everything I ordered was brought at the same time so some of it was a bit cold.
If you want to hang out and try good beers while watching a game with friends, this would be a good place.
Eggs Benedict is BOMB!
I'm always looking for a good Sunday brunch spot with a great Beni and have struck out so many times... I am pleased to say I've had EJ Phair's twice now (several to choose from) and have been very pleased both times! This is big for me! The only thing that would top the scenario is if they'd add a crab beni to the menu... Until then my fav it the bacon (real bacon) avo and tomato beni YUM! Of course accompanied by a large Mimosa carafe.
Another fav item here is their frickles which are fried pickles and they are the best i've had! Whether I'm with my husband or friend at least one person orders these the majority of the time.
We've really never had a bad experience here before. Once my husbands order was forgotten and then wrong but they made it right and comped it and the service made up for it as well as the quality of the food once recieved.
Breakfast, lunch or dinner we are good to go with EJ Phair's!
Went here because we went to a restaurant that was near by for their wings Wednesday...but they the were out. So we decided to try this place. I looked over the menu and score they have chicken wings!!! So i ordered them it had a mild buffalo sauce on it, very tasty. I also ordered the garlic fries, this might have been the best garlic fries i have tasted. The fries were crispy and had chunks of garlic and parsley mixed with it and parmesan cheese sprinkled on top. Yum yum.
Review Source:Go somewhere else. hostess was "special"-I had to repeat myself many times and she didnt know the menue- every other word was "like" "um" " let me check" -That a side the food sucked. Not decent, not O.K., sucked. I had the pepper steak sandwich and when your dealing with a crappy cut of meat it needs to be seasoned or marinated accordingly. Even pepper and salt would have worked but i didnt taste this. long story short $30 I will never see again and could have gone towards many better things. hope this helps
Review Source:Have been coming here with family almost once a week since they opened. Â I love the beer selection and burgers. Â The whole place has a great relaxed atmosphere. Â The service can be very good but the place gets packed and it can be hard to get anyone's attention. Â We have had to leave without being seated before. Â I wish they would hire more staff for busy nights! Â
Overall I would recommend this restaurant to anyone wanting great beer and better than average pub food. Â I would be comfortable taking anyone here.
I am a big fan of EJ's! Sometimes you wanna go where everybody knows your name dun dun dun and they're always glad you came! What else can you ask for: Friendly neighborhood pub with killer burgers and killer beers on tap. I always get good service and I always want to come back for a beer after work. These guys are special so give them a try fellow beer lovers!
Review Source:Great beer and atmosphere for watching the game.
The shepherds pie is disgusting. I've never seen shepherds pie that looked like that. We came for shepherds pie, and argued about who would get to order it. My boyfriend won - and thank goodness he did! When they first brought it out, my boyfriend and I thought they mixed up the order. It looked like chili with something on top of it (potatoes). I tried to be positive, and told my boyfriend that it was "ok." As I took another bite, there were all these weird vegetables and cubes of meat. I also had to use a spoon to eat it....awful. I had the chicken wings appetizer - nothing special. Save yourself some money and just go to WingStop!
Concord location still the same. Average to poor on food, good beers. Service is hit or miss. I leaned to far into the sacred bar to read a poster about a concert at the pittsburg location and got a nasty "get back" order. another time the over weight blond bar tender took my payment as a tip from a prior guest and then was hauty about it when I told her. Their pittsburg location MUCH nicer staff. Maybe it's their location, concord is actually a harsher city than pittsburg in the 21st century. Also, the pittsburg one has live music and it's in a historic 1920 renovated car dealership, across street the occupied the liberty hotel and made it a family restaurant. Only good about their concord location is that it's on todo santos with outdoor seating.
Review Source:I visit this place tonight with a couple of friends and I was very excited.
The place was not packed on a Sunday night what was nice plus the waiter was a nice and helpful guy
My first disappointed, a restaurant who's proud of their own beer has no tasting flutes, are you kidding me!!!
Second your Le Plank what should be a Belgian Pale Ale had no Belgium twist at all, call it next time a lager. The IPA's where okay but not great. The Steeltown Stout is the best beer on the tap 5 stars from this guy and a total surprise.
Then the food, I had a Thai salad for dinner what was very fresh and crispy, however my wife had a burger what was tasteless from the beginning. I thought we are living in the United States where they make great burgers. I am pretty sure that there was no seasoning at all on the burger. Sorry if I want fast food tasted I can go to McDonald.
I normally order from the guest beer selection which is fantastic.
The food is better than passable for a bar but that's never why I go... You know, like Giants fans go to ballgames for the garlic fries but also get to enjoy baseball while they're at the park? It's like that but with beer and food. I go for the beer and sometimes order food.
Staff are friendly.
They're also patient with my kid, which is huge for a parent.
Restroom could use a "freshening up"
Parking in the garage across the way and on the surrounding streets.
The only reason this restaurant (pub) gets one star is for the beer which is quite good. The food however is terrible. Twice I have gotten a burger that was almost inedible. Why do they bother asking how you want it cooked when they burn it every time. The second one, the bun was burnt also.
They need to get a Manager that knows  how to run a restaurant. This one does not.)
5 of us went here for lunch during the 2013 Winter Brew fest.  Very disappointing experience. Although the server took orders promptly, it took a long time to bring the food and it  didn't seem to be that busy.  You would think when an appetizer is ordered, it would be brought out before the main meal.  Not so for us - everything was brought out at the same time.  Unfortunately, the food was lukewarm and definitely not worth the wait - mediocre, at best.  Plus, the server never came back to check on us.  This might be a local favorite, but we won't be back or recommend.
Review Source:I wouldn't put this in my list of "must go back" restaurants, but it's great to grab a bite if you're in the area. It's a pretty standard brewery/restaurant combo package. There isn't much on the menu that's very healthy. Granted, I'm not always the healthiest eater, but I'd like to have the option. Plus my two vegan friends that were with us didn't have much to choose from either. I only ordered the french onion soup and some sweet potato fries, as I really wasn't that hungry, and both were pretty tasty. Overall, the food is pretty heavy though so just be prepared. Our server was very polite and friendly, as well as attentive to our large group of 9 or so. Kudos to keeping this group tame after a couple of rounds of drinks and laser tag at Qsar nearby!
Review Source:I really hate to jump on Yelp just to write a bad review.
EJ Phair is probably still a great place if you just want some drinks and atmosphere. So if that's what you are looking for, disregard much of this review. Maybe they should just stop serving food.
I was disappointed with my food on an earlier visit, and wanted to give them another chance. I did, and I ordered the Shepherds Pie, which was the first thing I ever tried when the location first opened. Back then, it was delicious.
This is an item that would make for a great signature item on the menu. But now, it is horrible. It is described as a stew, but I don't think the kitchen understands what that means. Instead, it is a soup, with tough chunks of beef floating around with some vegetables in a fluid that has a strong scent of beer. It's as if somebody ate a shepherds pie, then drank a lot of beer, and puked it all up into a bowl and topped it with some mashed potatoes.
The sausage trio was much better, though it could use a better gravy, like it used to.
It's a shame. The place was off to a great start, but I won't be back.
5 stars for the beer...
Everything else has slipped - which is really too bad.
We stopped in here for a quick bite and were seated promptly. Then we proceeded to wait...we finally had to ask (after about 15 minutes of not seeing a wait person in sight) if there was someone working our table? Our waiter showed up and apologized for the wait. Okay...
We ordered apps and entrees. Our drinks showed up...and after what seemed like a slightly lengthy wait...our entrees. No apps. We shrugged and dove in. About half way through our meal our apps showed up. Wow.... Seriously? We sent them back as we didn't want them at that point. Everyone was nice enough about it...but...it made for an upleasant experience.
The food has also slipped in our opinion - way too salty! I had a salad that must have had a cup of walnuts and a cup of cranberries in it with sparse greens.
I'd go here for a burger and beer and skip the rest.
As an update to my previous review, I had another opportunity to go for dinner as friends that we were going to dining with really wanted to go. I like to believe that there are always second chances.
Service this time was really good-waitress was attentive. The food-I got to actually have it this time-was good, above average for bar food. Overall the experience this time was much better, and would certainly go again-star rating possibly improved next time. Keep it up EJ Phair
Great service, real good food, not impressed with their beer.
I expected the el diablo burger to be spicy, it was good, but I think they wafted a pepperchini over it. Not spicy at all. (I'm a gringo too)
The diablo double IPA is hoppy, bitter and well, skunky. Either it's old, or the tap is imperfectly clean, or most likely I just don't share the brewer's taste for double ipa's.
Being that today is st Patrick's day I was really disappointed that they don't have an Irish stout of any sort. They don't even have a nitro tap. Please someone send the brewer to the Porterhouse in Dublin Ireland where most all their beers are on nitro. Why? BECAUSE it's better! That's why!
Yeah so basically I was coming here for a while before they actually had their own beer. They had a huge selection to choose from so that held me over until they actually started brewing their own stuff.
I order the same thing everytime: The Sausage Trio. It's a brat, a banger, and I think a hot sausage that are grilled to perfection. Pop! with juicy meaty goodness when you bite or cut into them. They sit on a bed of yummy mashed potatoes, sauerkraut (drooling on keyboard) and pears? Apples? There's some kind of sweet fruit that looks like sauerkraut tossed in the mix but I can't tell. It's either shredded apple or pear. A lil hot German chunky mustard on the side but... WOAH OMG WOAH. It's like the best thing I've ever eaten (sorry, mom).
It gets better! Now that they have their own beer, you can choose a pint of a little beer menu that tells you the names, prices and alcohol content! (that part I only find tacky because I have a lot of lush friends that use alcohol content listings to order the booziest beer; sort of more-bang-for-your-buck I suppose)... But I digress. This is the best part: you order a pint of beer to your liking, roughly $5-$7 per pint, but for an extra $2.50 or so, you can get the beer and keep the glass! Genius! Now I have a sweet EJ Phair pint glass to add to my glass collection. Brilliant! (And p.s. NO, they gave me a new glass, not the used one that 100 people have drank out of).
GO THERE.
ORDER THE SAUSAGE TRIO.
GET A BEER AND PAY FOR THE GLASS.
You'll have a great time.
Ok. Years ago, I had a yucky food experience here. Since then, it's definitely changed. I'm a fan of most of the menu, but in particular I really love the Spicy Steak Wrap, the Frickles and the Jaegerschniztel. Artery clogging but soooo good. Good selection of beers that rotate in and out too.
Also, EJ's does trivia Tuesday nights! Definitely brush up though because it's a challenging trivia for sure! And sometimes they have live music, and that's awesome.
When EJ Phair first opened, I was surprised to find a decent brew pub in the middle of a bedroom community. Â
I was so use to being spoiled by Oakland and SF beer spots like Magnolia, Toronado or The Trappist, I didn't know what to expect. Â But EJ Phair provides a nice oasis from your standard bottle beers found in near by suburban happy hour joints. Â EJ Phair's promotes craft beers and always have an interesting selection to choose from. Â Any beer lover could find something new to try and the bar tenders are pretty good at talking about beer and sharing notes. Â
Sit outside and enjoy the warm summer evenings that Concord provides and enjoy a brew. They have an all day happy hour on Tuesdays, perfect for when you are done shopping at the Concord Farmer's Market. Â Take note, visiting Thursday evenings can be tough, as it is often crowded due to the concerts across the street in the plaza. Â Just be okay with waiting for a table inside.
Thought this place looked like a cool sports bar with high tables, huge wooden tables, and bar seating. Thought the service was excellent. Food was mediocre.
I ordered the chicken pesto wrap. They make their own wrap which was more like a pita bread. Chicken was dry and there was too much oil dripping because of the pesto. I had it with potato salad which was super tasty! Â My friend ordered the spatzle and weinerschnitzel. That was really good!! It wasn't traditional German fare but it was so yummy! I would have ordered that next time.
The own brewed beer was actually not bad. Â I ordered their IPA which was very tasty and it was 9% alcohol! Score! Â Great place to hang out and grab a beer. But too bad it's not a full bar.
I had my 3rd visit to EJ Phair's last night - it's another cool and comfortable place in Todos Santos Plaza. Â It would definitely appeal to the bar crowd or just people looking for a cool and casual environment to grab a decent dinner. Â Granted, we were there on a Monday night and there was a good-size crowd, but I suspect it's a fun place for a rowdy Saturday night out, if you want a reasonable amount of rowdy. Â :) Â
I was impressed with the variety of selections on the menu, since I was hesitant to even set foot in there for dinner cuz I was not in the mood for greasy deep fried pub fare. Â But there's definitely something for everyone! Â I wanted light, and I loooooooooove me some thai peanut sauce, but their Thai Chicken Salad was a little disappointing. Â No complaints about the portion size, and the grilled chicken on top was pretty darn good. Â But chopped salads aren't always fun to eat cuz everything falls off the fork, and alongside smaller-than-bitesize chunks of cabbage were long slices of bell pepper and jicama. Â Trying to eat it felt like an intelligence test. Â
My BF ordered the Diablo burger, anything spicy on any menu is a siren call to him! Â And while not always my thing, the combo of a well-cooked and well-seasoned thick n' juicy burger patty, good guac, melty cheese and the chipotle mayo - man, my one bite was a happy one. Â His sidecar of potato salad was yellow, which means Mustard Ahoy, so I stayed away but he didn't seem blown away by it. Â
And before I forget, we ordered the fried zucchini app. Â Yeah yeah yeah, I said I didn't want fried but I'm a sucker for the zuke every single time! Â And they didn't disappoint - spear-style, panko crusted, ranch for dipping, and even a sprinkle of parm on top. Â Well done! Â
A solid and decent place, but unfortunately neighboring restaurants deliver a little better when it comes to flavor and fun.
The girlfriend and I wanted to go have a quick dinner and at first I wanted to take her to a deli I found on here and loved. When we arrived the place was closed. Then I'm like well I still want a good sandwich and I know of another deli and it's right down the street, and again Closed. We were going to settle for Quiznos but then we thought, well there' s Happy Roll that we haven't been to yet. CLOSED. The other sushi restaurant down the street. CLOSED for good. The point is we finally went to E.J. Phair. We've been there before for drinks but we wanted to try the food.
The vibe at E.J. Phair is very laid back. The waiter's and bar tenders are very casually dressed, and look like they love there job. We looked through the menu and both found something we would love. At first we ordered the fried zucchini, followed by the Diablo burger, which I ordered, and she ordered the Thai Chicken salad, with coconut peanut dressing.
One thing about this place besides the awesome vibe is the food comes out extremely fast. Our zucchini showed up and looked delicious. It tasted amazing, but fried zucchini usually does. :) We devoured it pretty much immediately. Almost immediately after they took it away, they brought our entrees. Very fast service.
The Diablo burger really worked for me. I love spicy, I love hot, and it had a good kick with out going over the top. The Chipotle mayo was really good, and it came with guacamole which added just that much more. I had potato salad on the side. I love potato salad with my burger and this one just didn't really cut it. It tasted like it had a bit to much mustard in it. The burger was great, the potato salad, meh.
I tried a bite of the of the Thai Chicken salad, and I really agree with my girlfriend, it didn't really have much flavor to it. The coconut peanut dressing was pretty much non existent. The salad didn't taste bad but wasn't exactly good either.
Overall the service is great the food is ok.
3 words: jagerschnitzel, jagerschnitzel, jagerschnitzel. Â We drive over an hour at least once a month to come here just for the jagerschnitzel. Â They have a wide selection of beer and my husband always manages to find one he's never tried before. Â Their chili nachos are amazing, garlic fries are fantastic, and their pulled pork sandwiches are really good, too. Â The only thing I've ever had here that we didn't absolutely love was the creme brulee. Â It just didn't have a great flavor. But that is kind of a froo-froo dessert to have high expectations for at a place like this, so we will let it slide. :)
The waiters are always very very friendly, but despite that the service is always terrible. It takes forever for us to get drinks and sometimes we have to ask several times for drinks or the check, but it's hard to be too bothered by it because they are always so nice. I think they are just always really busy and maybe a little forgetful.
Despite the inattentive but friendly waiters, we always have a great time here and the food is fantastic. Try it out!
Concord, CA is hardly a big or famous town relative to California, but it does have a distinctive city square... sitting prominently at the corner of that city centerpiece is EJPhair's.
I got the chance to enjoy EJPhair's not long ago when some friends I was visiting took me out to a late dinner.  A classic brewpub, EJ Phairs offers a surprisingly diverse menu (though you'd be advised to take advantage of their burger specialties!) and wide selection of eclectic beers.  With an array of flatscreens seemingly always tuned to sports, I'm not sure it would be a first pick for a ladie's night out, but it did appear to be at least totally acceptable for couples and mixed groups.  The food was great (As always I tested the bbq pork  and was quite pleased).  The beer was exceptional.
One complaint, Saturday night apparently equals live music... it felt out of place and generally distracting. Â Weekenders beware...
Improved but only by the smallest margin. Still very loud. We were here for lunch and even with less than a quarter of the tables occupied it was annoyingly loud. Any more full and it becomes difficult to hear the people at your own table.
I thought we were going to have horrible service when we arrived and there was nobody to seat us what with the hostess milling around the middle of the restaurant on her cell phone. When she finally came over she didn't bother to get off her phone, she smiled at us and fumbled with the dirty menus. Dirty menus being a huge pet peeve of mine. Thankfully our waitress was more professional. No excessive waiting, came back several times to check on us and our drinks. This was an improvement over our last visit.
The food arrived in a reasonable amount of time. It would be best described as acceptable. There was nothing to commend. It was warm, tasted OK, portion size was good, otherwise absolutely unremarkable in any way.
Love EJ Phair; great beer, great food and good prices. I have been coming here since I moved to Pleasant Hill about 6 months ago. This is a great place to grab lunch with a co worker or have drinks on the weekend. Staff is always great and the food is always on par as well.
Great selection of local and imported beer. The food is always great, from a burger to a salad I have never been disappointed with my selection on the menu. This is a favorite of mine for sure!!
