Jamestown Tavern, where even a non-local can feel like a local.
Stopped in here a couple of weeks ago on a blustery January afternoon. Â We were looking for a place to chill out and drink a few cold ones after a day of exploring the local parks and forts. Â I had previously read reviews of the Jamestown Oyster Bar and other local establishments and decided on J-town Tavern. Â
Once we stepped in, I realized that this was a no frills joint. Â It was a bit like what I would imagine drinking at a VFW to be like. Â We were warmly greeted by the lovely bartender and given our menus. Â They had a handful of beers on draft and I was offered a sample of the BBC Steel Rail but eventually ordered the Loose Cannon. Beer prices were super decent at only four dollars. Â The bar was quite busy but the remainder of the restaurant was pretty empty as it was still quite early.
We received our drinks and I perused to menu. Â I decided to order up some oyster, as they were only 1.40 a piece. Â They had a decent menu to choose from, and all of the prices seemed fair and cheaper than you would find most other restaurants. Â This place just screamed fresh seafood, as their was a fresh catch board on the right side of me on the wall, which made me feel like I must be drinking at a sea captain and crew hang out. Â I do admit that most of the board was not filled out, which means it must be the off season for he fishermen of Jamestown. Â The oysters I ordered did seem fresh, tasty and at great price for the area. Â
All in all, this is as non-pretentious as you can get. Â Sure, it may not have the ambiance of some of the other seafood joints in Jamestown, but it is perfect if you enjoy good prices, friendly staff, and good, fresh seafood and burgers.
I've been here twice for LUNCH with a friend of mine.
Both times we arrived around noon time to a pretty empty restaurant. Not uncommon in winter months. It has a pretty limited menu. Mostly sandwich type eats. They do have specials every day.
The first time was a Friday. They had a 6.00 luncheon special which was a grilled chicken sandwich topped with red peppers and mozzarella cheese on a soft bunn. French fries and pickle included. Portion was huge and it was very tasty.
The 2nd time we went, my buddy had a 6.00 special that was pasta and steamed mussels over a red sauce. Again, a HUGE portion.....tons of mussels. He totally enjoyed it.
Bottled beer was also very inexpensive compared to other local places.
My only problem with this place is the interior. I wish the current owner rehabbed it when he took it over. The place could use a rework. I'd give the food & service a 5 star if it wasn't for that.
Cheap & delicious eats! Leave your gold card home!
Service was extremely friendly. The onion rings were to die for! I ate way more than I should have. The dinner portions were huge, the salmon salad had a large piece of salmon, tons of bacon and lots of cherry tomatoes. The steak sandwich was delicious. The burger was tasty. The salmon and rice was really a great combination of flavor . Definitely our top pick for our stay in Jamestown. Only downside was not a seafood selection on menu.
Review Source:My wife andI stopped here for an early dinner Monday, we were told by a young man at the ferry dock that it was a real local place with good prices. Â Most of the other restaurants on the strip are over priced. When we stepped into the Tavern we knew it was a local spot. The bar was lined up we customers that were all talking about their day. It was nice to hear the comments. The Tavern is rustic and simple, our waitress was very nice AND she actually knew the menu! Being from the NYC area I could not believe the prices. Beer for $2, a glass of wine for $3. I work with many restaurants for a living, I have been begging them to reduce the prices on certain wines and beers and most refuse. In Italy the everyday wines are cheaper than soda in the local restaurants. Sorry, I don't mean to digress, the menu was a simple affair and there were some daily specials. Again the the prices were very good. We both had the fish and chips. The portions are huge, and very fresh tasting. I'm a big eater and I couldn't finish the portion. We also had the clam chowder which we thought was the best we have had on our many trips to New England, tons of clams and not that thick pasty stuff we have had in Newport. I can't wait to go back in July on my next trip to New England.
Review Source:I gave Jamestown Tavern 5 stars mainly because it is just what Jamestown needs ... a good, inexpensive restaurant. The food is good, probably no more than 4 stars, but the everyday prices are very affordable and will keep me ... and others coming back. Â The owners have cleaned up the old PAC. Here is hoping the keep up the stards they have set.
Review Source:Awesome! I'm tempted to start off this review by dissing other local establishments that I frequent just for the fact that by now they are totally BORRRRRING but ya know what? That's rude, and totally uncalled for. Anyhow - clearly I'M the boring one, if I'm having problems with boredom. It's all in my head!
Came here for a change of scene, it's brand new and I heard it was pretty good.
Lovely joint. Full on a snowy wet Friday afternoon. Bar/Sit down eating - total family joint. Solid food, very decent prices - in fact, the most competitively priced menu on the island. And that's legit.
I got a grass fed - yes - GRASS FED burger with gogonzola for a mere $8 (but who's payin'? not me - thank you Derek!)
We had a mound of onion rings, some fried risotto-y thing from the app menu, and they got steak sammies. Derek said it wasn't anything like a traditional Philly cheesesteak, but that it was still good.
There was a mound of (ok, second time I used the word mound in this review - sorry - ) french fries on my plate that had like absorbed into each other (hand cut fries yo!) to make this french fry MASS and I said: DARE ME TO EAT IT. No one took me seriously but I did. I did it. I shoved the whole damn thing in... (that's what she said - ugh, stupid joke)
It was good. Nice friendly family meal.
Fireplace in the back room. Cozy. Stuff like that.
Front room is going to be renovated and have lots of live music planned. Spoiler alert also gonna be a vintage car thingy every (Wednesday? something) week or month or something from May through the summer. I probably got those facts wrong. No worries! I reiterate with love.
There's a few TV screens for all you sports fans.
All in all, cozy killer value for your dollar kinda homey happy family joint. Not bad before or after a joint - if you're into that kinda thing....
PS - all beers are like, $3 - even Stellas and Sammys. Glasses of wine that cheap too. Owner gives "good handshake" like that to us awesome desperate normal locals.
