I don't hate Joe's as a chain. I just had a bad experience at this particular location.
First off the service was quite bad. There was not very many people in there but our waitress was super slow. There was even one point where we were waiting for our check and she was sitting at the table next to us talking to one of her friends. We had to wait for all of our drink refills. I started to ask someone else to get them.
As for the food it was okay. There isn't much I can say about them. We got crab leg meals. It wasn't too tough or anything. I would get it again.
As for Joe's... I will probably end up returning but not to this location. I'm pretty sure there is another one in Greenwood which is about the same distance for me. I would suggest going there if you are in the mood for crab legs.
Been over 3 years since I have visited Joe's. Glad I came back. Great service and great seafood. Started with your typical house salad, but they do have a sweet strawberry vinaigrette. Order the KJ Steampot. It was large enough to share. It contained snow crab, scallops, mussels, corn on the cobb and red potatoes. Not a big fan of mussels so they aloud me to sub out those for extra scallops :) After this meal I will definitely return soon.
Review Source:First off the food was good, very good. The service, however, was slow motion weak at best. Our waiter was slow motion and goofy. We watched him carry our drinks around for ten minutes before he gave them to us. I would go back because the food is good, but they need to retrain the waiters.
Review Source:Staying in town for business, however I use to live here in northern Indianapolis. Â
Was quite disappointed in the service and especially the food. Â Ordered the steak and shrimp. Shrimp had no flavor, steak was just nasty. Should not have gone to a chain seafood restaurant for steak, I know.
Steak - fake looking grill marks, and ridiculously chewy. Ordered medium rare, was medium.
I use to really like Joes Crab Shack, but I am over it.
Guess I've ended up going to more chains lately... I try to be open-minded! This place is pretty good. I think I went to the one in Fort Wayne a while back and it involved country music, so I was hesitant to go here. But my boyfriend really wanted some fresh crab legs, so on we went.
The atmosphere is pleasant, casual, and fun, especially on a sunny summer day by the window, where you can look outside and see the lake right there. There is also outdoor seating as an option, but I generally prefer eating indoors by the window.
The crab (dipped in butter sauce, yum) was possibly the best I've ever had even though our server didn't ask what seasoning we wanted, so it was unseasoned. I love the crab shell opening tools they give you. The Garlic Mussels appetizer was also delicious - maybe a bit overcooked, but delicious.
The service could have been better, since we were not asked about seasoning and only refilled waters once towards the end of the meal. But overall it was a good experience and I would not mind going back.
As mentioned in other reviews, the best feature of Joe's Crab Shack is the outdoor patio. Â I didn't even know there was a lake (with giant lake-side houses) back there. Â The patio is covered and partially enclosed. Â Ceiling fans keep the air moving, so it's comfortable even on the hottest day. Â One star.
I ate here with the parents on Memorial Day at Dad's request, and Shannon, our server, was very sweet and helpful explaining the menu and all the crab eating tools. Â One more star. Â
Crab nachos were a decent appetizer although multiple cream sauces were a bit of an overkill. Â The entrees disappointed - big time. Â Two of my fellow diners ordered the steam pot with crab, shrimp, sausage, corn, and potatoes. Â It's not a good sign for a place that calls itself a CRAB shack when they both 1) agree the sausage is the best part and 2) ran straight to the bathroom shortly after returning home. Â Mom loves spicy so she got the spicy boiled crab, and it was so over-spiced that most of it was inedible. Â I played it safe with a salad topped with a crab cake - meh. Â No additional stars.
We were exploring the neighborhood of Fashion Mall @ Keystone to find a good restaurant and Joe's came up. We've seen the commercial many times but yesterday was our first visit. It's not crowded at all. Their seafood seems fresh and tastes good. Definitely order crab legs! Wife had the crawfish but the portion is pretty small.
Review Source:I'm not usually one for national chain restaurants, but this Joe's Crab Shack is something special...
I highly recommend bypassing the ordinary chain-restaurant-dining-room and immediately heading back to the balcony in the rear.  Who knew that this place was situated right next to a little private lake behind all of the strip malls of 86th Street?!  Sitting on the balcony, watching pontoon boats putter by while cracking some crabs  is not a bad way to spend an evening.
Or, if you're not interested in dropping a bit of money by getting the crab, grab a drink and some appetizers while on the balcony and you're immediately transported to a seaside destination.
But don't go in wintertime. Â I think it would be chilly on the balcony and the inside restaurant isn't worth the price. Â :-)
When I'm in Castleton this is a cool place to visit and it reminds me a bit of when I lived in Virginia Beach. Joe's Crab Shack is the kind of locals hangout you would find on the Chesapeake Bay. In fact, the restaurant sits right on a small lake. Joe's is a fun place that has the staff come out and dance to a hit from the 80's every 45 minutes... they have King Crab, Snow Crab, Dungeness Crab, Lobster, Oysters, Clams, Mussels, Salmon, Shrimp, Tilapia and more.
