Still my center of the universe. Nice selection of beers, Scotches and tequilas, friendly bartenders and servers ... but mostly it's the clientele. I started going there years agon when it was a good place for a PR guy to run into all sorts of media types. It was their hangout. Not so much anymore, but the mix of people is still ideal, for me. They are a variety of young and old, urban workers and professionals. Crowd gets younger and more numerous as the night goes on. Happy hour is usually small. But prices are typical bar prices.
The main part of Joeys is a classic bar. Deep and narrow, with ornate room-length bar. However, there is plenty of room: Outside patio, semi-private mezannine, and a spacious pool hall. Food is remarkably consistent, considering cooks change often. But it's simple, basic fare: Pizza and nachos. Perfect for a snack when you'd rather stay and chat than go to dinner.
It took me moving away from SA to actually visit this place! Not sure how that happened, but I've resolved that problem now.
Great bar where everybody knows your name. Lots of locals but a good mix of visitors as well.
There's a patio space as well as plenty of pool tables. The interior is just dim enough. There are about a dozen craft beers on type and a full bar.
The food is actually better than I thought it would be! The pizza smells awesome at 1 a.m.!
Sit, grab a drink and chillax.
I really like that this place remains a really relaxed bar, despite all of the hype around its neighbors on the St. Mary's strip. Like, it's a cozy bar but not crowded. Service is friendly and quick, and there's usually some good beer to be had. I like the fact that that pool area is separated from the bar itself, and that it has a good-sized patio, which will make spring and summer nights comfortable. Don't get me wrong, I still like a lot of the other places around there, but Joey's speaks to my inner thirtysomething, where I don't have to worry about ironic neon clothing and skinny jeans to be cool.
Review Source:Joey's has a relaxed feel and caters to a 30's plus crowd. If you just want to chat and actually hear the people around you in a nice looking environment, this would be a good place to go.
They have patio with a few long wooden benches and tall stools and a very interesting looking spiral staircase. Also, Joey's has a large room with pool tables adjacent to the bar area - another great asset.
The place is decorated with plenty of wood and other cool details like a fireplace and artwork. Something about Joey's makes you just feel so nostalgic... but for what? I don't know ... It just feels like a Cheers episode.
Everyone may not know your name, but it IS really laid-back, especially for the St. Mary's strip.
Oh Joeys how you give me warm fuzzy feelings! I remember being 13 years old at the White Rabbit wishing I could sit at the cool bar across the street. Now that I'm of age, I come here often. It was everything I dream in for a bar. Full of antique bar stools, lots of wood, great selection of booze, Christmas lights on the patio and pizza. I also enjoy my Blue Moon pitchers with orange slices, the huge hall of pool tables and my scorching hot pizza.
My major complaint (minus star) is the bartenders. On occasion, when my favorite isn't working they sure know how to screw things up! Like switching credit cards (yea, that happened to me), taking a $20 giving me change for a $10. Little things like that kinda mess with a person who's had a few too many beers and I'm a regular! So be watchful friends, keep your eye on your money and your car. There are a lot of shady people that surround the area.
My friends brought me here since the previous bar we were at didn't know how to make an Old Fashion or a Rusty Nail.
It's one of the nicer bars on the street and the night we came in, it was rather empty for Wednesday evening and there were only men sitting at the bar.
We sat ourselves in one of the corner tables to begin our night and my friend placed our drinks.
Friend: Â "Do you make rusty nails because the last bar we were at couldn't make it."
Bartender: (gives my friend a dirty look) "I am a bartender."
She placed a couple orders of rusty nails along with a couple old fashions and came back to our table with the orders and I was ready to begin my night.
The old fashion was a little too sweet for me so I passed on it immediately and gave it to my friend who liked fruitier drinks.
However, the sweet, sweet taste of the Rusty Nail put a wonderful smile on my face that I ordered another one and it was mixed to perfection again.
I wanted to push myself a little since I was on vacation and told my friend we should order the Four Horsemen and the Apocalypse.
The other two gave us a wide eyed look and became a little nervous but reassured them that there's nothing more fun than mixing drinks.
We placed our orders and that definitely gave us the kick we needed. However, the night was still early and we headed over the next bar.
If I come back to San Antonio, I'll be back for the Rusty Nails at Joeys!
I was served beer in a disgustingly dirty glass. I'm a local and previously had nothing but good experiences with Joey's. Tonight I wasn't meeting up with friends to play pool or chat upstairs, I was there alone (I'm a female) to watch the Finals game. Halfway into my pint, I realized there was a THICK SMEAR OF LIPSTICK across the other side of the glass. It took me a little while to accept that I had been served in a dirty glass. And not just dirty with a beerline and dried beer spots, but full on glob of gunk clear as day. This was so disgusting to me that I got up during the 4th quarter, went up to the bar and showed the bartender who just remarked, "Oh, no." and offered me a fresh one. Uh, no thanks, buddy. You clearly served me from the dirty rack (I've worked in a bar before), and it was intentional. Thanks for ruining my Finals game. : (
Review Source:If you're looking for a *laid back* night out with friends, go to Joey's. The 30-something crowd is usually cool and quiet and just looking to chill, enjoy a beer or four, and maybe play some pool.
I like this bar a lot.
There are plenty of pool tables, great selection of beer, and lots of people to meet. But not meet in a 20-somethings-who-want-to-get-drunk-and-make-some-Âbad-decisions-type of way. More like, just interesting people who will sit and talk and have a good time.
The smoke is serious here. I can't wait for the ban to go into effect and be able to enjoy a night out without wanting to shave my head and burn my clothes when I get home just to get rid of the stench! But, that's not too much further away and soon we can go anywhere and be free from the stuff!
Some other pluses are dedicated parking and other spots close by if you want to wander around to a few places for the night. The bars on this strip vary widely (everything from Joey's to restaurants to... a male strip club, yuck ;-) so make sure you read the Yelp reviews before wandering in to a place so you know what's up at the next spot!
If someone would have told me that I was going to find a 5 star bar in a shady part of San Antonio, I would have laughed. Â This might be long, but I promise you'll want to read it all. It's good news!
Where to start?!
Great parking options. They have a private back lot plus there is street parking. Yes it is dark, but there was cop walking the premises.
They have an amazing patio. It's two levels, up and down, plus a fire place for when it's cold and fans for when it's hot. Chiminea's, picnic tables, strung lights .... perfect.
Their inside has several seating options as well. There is down stairs seating by the bar and a mezzanine of sorts above it. Then there is the pool room with several open tables, plus the massive dart room.
There were many open tables with chairs and stools, and a little bar area between the darts and pool. There are cool murals on the walls and a great selection of music on the juke box.
Smoking is allowed in here but it didn't really feel like a smokers bar where we were because the place is so big that it doesn't really stick to you like it does in some smaller venues.
Now the biggest surprise EVER?!
They have seriously one of the best pizza's I have ever had. Like, top 2 pizzas and it's competing for number one. It was the perfect size for two people, the cheese was stringy and delicious and the pepperoni wasn't too hard or too soft. Now, I will say this. It is pretty greasy and not healthy in anyway what so ever. So take that into consideration.
Now other people were talking about this being a place for locals only or for the "older" crowd. I'm 26, I'm from Houston. I fit in this place in every way. The bar tenders were nice, the servers were nice, and I loved that I could hear my husband when we were talking, and that there were so many places and options for different vibes.
If you want to find the "heart" of the city and not all the touristy crap, check out Joey's.
you know what i rate this high because this is a really chill spot people dont know about . i mean beer is a little expensive, BUT its a really chill enviroment and you can beat it . i have been here many times and have never had a problem with the other customers, service , not once i highly recomend this if you are out with friends or a girl and wanna just chill
Review Source:I've just met up for drinks, chat, and pool here, so I'm not claiming to be an authority on the food - the one time we ordered nachos, they took the order, then came back and said the chef had walked out without telling anyone. Weird. But apart from that, we've liked it pretty well every time we've been.
If you're looking for a younger, hipper, music-blasting experience, go next door to the Mix. Joey's is definitely older, mellower, and usually a good deal emptier (at least in the pool room). It's a casual, classic bar that provides a good place to meet up with friends, share a pitcher, and have a conversation where you can actually hear what the other people are saying and stuff generally doesn't get out of control. I haven't seen anyone puking on their shoes, though I did notice one girl having an inordinate amount of trouble figuring out how to shut her bathroom stall door... The bouncer is friendly and the outdoor patio has nice high power fans. And you can usually find parking in the back unless you get there REAL late. Their beer is pretty standard, nothing special; I usually just get Shiner.
Oh, and did I mention they have SHUFFLEBOARD?? For all the other addicts out there :)
This place is full of locals. It's a cool mix of the 30-40 year old artists that don't "party" but want to be out. The atmosphere is cool and there are lots of pool tables. Everyone is a bit to themselves though. They have their own little group and they stick with the clique...not a lot of socializing with those not in the circle of people that came together. Not a meat market for sure. You don't have to dress up (unless your clique dressed up, heehee) and you can just hang out. They allow smoking in the building which most people do not appreciate but nobody says anything.
So if you're 30-40 years old and need a place to slowly kill yourself and your friends with cigarette smoke, while playing pool and having some drinks, this is your gig!
I used to live about five blocks away from Joey's so, not surprisingly, one night I met up with a few friends there. This was a week night, so it was pretty slow and my friends and I were about half the clientele that evening. I'm just going to put it this way: my friends and I are queer (aka gay homosexuals) and we look (and act) the part. Apparently some people found this unnerving, as I overheard one patron asking another, "Is this gay night?" I thought, "Whatever, go home and have some boring heterosex."
I was willing to believe that this was just some homophobic jerks that happened to be there at the time, but I recently found a quote from the bar owner which made me realize that this incident was no coincidence.
"Villarreal went on to tell Marc that the people in the photographs looked too much like drag queens and that he didn't want to "attract that type of clientele" to his bar. He continued by saying that he had had an issue at another one of his bars, (Joey's), with a similar problem." (Check it out yourself! http://media.www.theinde…)
Fellow queers (and allies!), let's take our self respect back and our drinking money elsewhere.
Came here on a somewhat festive Friday night with some friends hoping to observe and get to know the locals. Â My friend (Abigail A.) ordered a water because she had kindly offered to be the designated driver for the evening. Â The bartender asked us all for our IDs and we promptly presented our respective IDs. Â Then to my chagrin, the bartender them told my friend she had to leave. Â
Wait . . . what?
Now admittedly her ID was a bit expired, but my friend, well all of us, are well over 21. Â I mean gee whiz, tee hee, maybe we take darn good care of our skin and we've consumed enough alcohol to preserve our youthfulness for eternity (if only), but yeah that's not really the case. Â And furthermore, girlfriend just wanted a water!
Bartender directed us to the doorman, who had wandered off when we originally entered and my friend asked him if it would be okay for us to stay at the bar as she only wished to consume water and hello, look at her, she was definitely over 21. Â But alas, he also refused us and tried to initiate some diatribe about why they were so strict . . .
I mean, I guess I can kind of give props for their hard-line approach about having valid IDs - keeps the kiddos out, which I am all for. Â But what a freaking bummer! Â
Other than that the placed seemed pretty legit and a slightly older more mature crowd (to put it lightly) than The Mix next door. Â Too bad we didn't get to fully experience it. Â Maybe I'm being a jerky and criminally-minded, but all the other bars allowed her some leniency for the expired license.
It's cool, we returned back to our friend's house and danggg did she get totally wasted off the water there. Â Like you wouldn't believe! Â Just kidding, but yeah . . . expired ID? Â Don't bother coming here. Â Is all I'm saying!
P.S. Â Yes my friend will be renewing her license this week so that she may DD for us drunkards in the nights to come. Â Sheesh!
Seems like a decent neighborhood joint, but if you're not local, you're not as well received. The people were rather rude when I went to the bar and tried to order a WATER. I was the DD for the night. My ID was a little expired and when he asked me for it to order a WATER, I was asked to leave. I understand, but I'm not exactly a spring chicken. The people were a little on the low fashion side and it was a mix of ages, leaning on the mid 30s, early forties... Maybe I was too youthful???
Review Source:My main beef with Joey's is the indoor smoking, but I guess I should blame that on the City of San Antonio rather than Joey's. Joey's is a great place to watch a game, play pool, or throw some darts with friends. Joey's also has a small outdoor area with it's own bar that is good for private parties. Joey's has a decent selection of beers on tap, but no drink specials--boo.
Even though I thought it was pretty nice of the barkeep to let us bring pizza in from White Rabbit after the Joey's kitchen had closed, as a whole I'm not a big fan of Joey's. It's never my top choice for places to go to, but I'll happily go along with friends who want to go there.
When I was in middle school I was always afraid of Joey's because I thought it was a biker bar. Low and behold I was wrong and it's now become one of the few bars I can stand to be in for more then half an hour. First of all the space is huge. The bar sits right in between the big side patio and the room full of pool tables. We usually sit in there because it's a bit quieter and they have big tables so usually we're all sitting down or playing pool. The prices are a bit steep, this is coming from a $2.50 Lonestar drinker, but the bartenders definitely know what they're doing. I've had some great dirty martinis. I really like the bar even more for the fact that it's an older crowd. I'm not a big bar person now that I've gotten older so I get tried of yelling at someone to have a conversation which is something that doesn't happen at Joey's. I can still go out with my friends and have a good time while saving my vocal chords in the process.
Review Source:I will say that your mileage may vary here contingent on the bartender on duty: our first server was (to put it politely) sort of going through the motions. Putting our pizza order in was a rather laissez-faire experience (I'm reasonably sure he forgot to do it at all until someone else's order came up), but after the shift change, the whole outlook of this place livened up. I'm glad we stayed for another round.
The second barkeep was terrific: engaging, the kind of guy who remembers you from the last time you were in, and quick with a pour. It was a great kick start to the rest of our evening. We tried a pepperoni pie. too, and noticed that the slices came out piping hot and small enough to easily cram down your throat in haphazard manner....so that's what we did. They have Alamo pilsner on tap, and it was a worthwhile counterpart to those warm slices. We'll be back.
Joey's is an above average bar located right across the street from White Rabbit and just feet from the amazing Demos Cafe. Â It is a great place to grab a drink before a show at White Rabbit and after dinner at Demos. Â
LOCATION AND DECOR:
It is convenient in every sense of the word. Â It's a cool and colorful neighborhood and Joey's is right smack dab in the middle of it. Â The building is actually pretty vast and has a number of sections: A large pool table area with 9 tables, a dart playing area, a decent sized bar area, an upstairs balcony seating area overlooking the bar and two outdoor patios (one upstairs, one down). Â The bar is really nice looking, quality woodwork and the gentle lighting help the place look nice and even a little sophisticated. Â
DRINKS:
I didn't eat here so I can't comment on the food, but I did see the pizza out bartender brought out and WOW, it looked good!! Â The drinks are poured well, in clean glasses (you would be surprised how often they aren't) and they are priced very fairly. Â I will say they have a huge Scotch/Whiskey selection but not enough rums and vodkas for me. Â But that shouldn't affect your decision to come here, it is a great vibe with good drinks and it's a hell of a lot better than drinking at the Rabbit during a show.
STAFF:
Bar staff was very professional, very polite and was actually helpful and didn't just laugh at me when I asked where Demos' was (it was right next door). Â He was quick attentive and did a great job.
Overall, this is a great place to hang out before or after a show. Â I really want to get down here someday when I don't have a show in Austin and check this place out on the weekend.
Did I mention that you can smoke in the bar here? Â Yeah I know, there is a God.
