My boyfriend and I ate here when we visited New Hope for my birthday and we had an amazing time! My boyfriend was particularly happy that they allow smoking, and I was happy that it was an 18+ establishment and no children were allowed. Don't get me wrong, kids are fine, but it's nice to see that some places realize that not every place needs to be (or should be) kid-friendly. The food was to die for, and the guy who was our server was an absolute delight. Not only was he funny, but when there was a sudden deluge of rain as we were getting ready to leave, without a second thought he lent us an umbrella to use as we walked up and down Main Street! We returned it once it stopped raining, of course.
Review Source:I have been going to this wonderful dive for over 15 years . Nathan,s  quesadilla and burgers are the best. I always eat there on Sunday's and or Wednesdays . Great drinks and great people but  apparently you  can't go on a Tuesday night different severs ,cooks and even bartenders . It started off with weak drinks and went downhill from there !, Tonight I ordered a rare cheese Burger and my partner  ordered  chicken quesadillas . We recieved a dry, welldone burger and cheese (no chicken) quesadillas. When I complained about my over cooked burger and cheese quesadillas, Ali (our server) explained we have a new cook and I will  tell the manager tomorrow . She would not get me a new rare buger or put chicken in the quesadilla like we ordered and gave me the full bill . I thought I was punked . If you love the place like I DID do not  go there on a Tuesday night.hopefully this was just a  one time fluke .
Review Source:"On the right night with some good talent on stage its a great place. Generally a good locals joint and some partiers. lf the band doesn't know how to play in a small venue and control their sound and/or drummer you find yourselves looking to get some fresh air. Decent bottled beer selection and you can buy a ix pack on your way out- Nice. Â One caution if your girlfriend or you don't like smoke stand clear.... or go down to where the bands play as its not as toxic down there. Â Still not sure of the fire safety codes for this place!!!
Review Source:Gotta love J&P's: the EPITOME of dive bar. Â But as divey as it is, the talent that walks through John and Peter's is far from it. Â I've seen some amazing gigs there, from spontaneous acts that walk on stage for their Monday night open mic to pretty swinging bands over the weekend. Â Musicians like George Thorogood, Norah Jones, WEEN, Tiny Tim (lolz), have all called J&P's home at one point or another. Â Even talents such as Penn & Teller have left hand prints on John & Pete's heart.
As for food, service, and prices -- John & Peter's is pretty standard. Â $5 cover if there is live entertainment, although open mic nights are free (donation bins make their rounds however), and a basic beer/drink is essentially $4. Â The servers/bartenders there feel like old friends and rest assured, they'll be asking you if you want another drink before you actually NEED another drink. Â Yep, just like old friends.
I do suggest seating in John and Peter's outside area if you can. Â Inside is like a sauna filled with second-hand smoke and mind you, I am one of those polluters. Â Yet regardless of harmful inhalations, outside simply makes more sense: a) fresh air b) more room, and c) QUICKER DRINK ACCESS. Â The only downside is that you cannot see or hear the live entertainment. Â Damn you catch 22's!!
Ever since quitting smoking after almost 13 years of it, I'm surprised to find that I've become everything I ever hated. Â I'm now a HUGE pussy when it comes to having to sit in a fallout cloud of recycled tobacco for a couple of hours. Â The main bar area of John & Peter's is tiny, everybody is smoking their faces off and the roof is 8ft high - if this sounds like something you're not prepared to deal with, don't come here. Â On the other hand, if you can quit being such a goddamn pussy for 5 minutes and get yourself a pitcher of Yuengling, John & Peter's is a really great place.
Review Source:I've read recently in an article of Glidemagazine (by Tim Newby, January 25, 2007) a very interesting and promising review about John and Peter's Bar in New Hope, PA. And after I got also from a friend a recommendation of the bar I decided to go to New Hope when I was on business in Trenton, NJ. I found on a few visits of the place almost everything as it was described in the Glidemagazine. Great live music, good food, good drinks, and I was allowed to smoke, really a nice cozy restaurant, where one could feel well. But on the other hand I had the impression that the place was full of drugs and one could buy everything. I think there was the whole spectrum of material. I had the impression that even the owners/patrons used it as well. It seemed to me that both, Mr. Price and Mr. Larsen, were coming to their own establishment completely filled up with the stuff in full view of the guests. Perhaps this could be legal in PA? Has no one of the officials any interest in this market? I, at least, was a bit shocked!
Review Source:J & P's is a great place to go after a long day. It's comfy, non-pretentious and usually has a pretty good crowd of people to be around. The food is great- with pretty good vegetarian options, too. It just feels right. Smoker friendly- so not so great for those who don't smoke- but for smokers, and those who smoke when drinking- it's great.
Review Source:This review concerns only the outside area.
Went there on a sunny afternoon with a friend to have a beer in this very nice atmosphere (nice music playing, a terrace not overcrowded). We were pleasantly surprised by the food too, as the pulled pork sandwich was delicious.
Not a very big selection of draft beers (although big enough for my friend and I to find something to our tastes), but a nice selection of bottled beers. Very nice service.
Totally cool dive bar that has tons of character. Â I bet this place is pretty cool when they've got live bands playing. Â I wanted to sit outside, but they were full up. Â If we had sat outside, I would have missed seeing the tour posters, the crappy crappers, and the fact that you can actually smoke inside. Â I'm not a smoker, but it's actually kind of comforting that people can still smoke inside. Â Beers are definitely pricey for a dive bar, but I enjoyed my time here.
Review Source:There's nothing like a nice lunch outside when the sun is shining and the pleasant people are out enjoying the weather.
Such was my experience at John & Peter's which, despite its dive-ish interior, has a nice outdoor seating area with a bar and music. I should point out that my review in no way includes the inside area, as I only went inside to use the bathroom.
The outside had just opened two days earlier, so the beer taps were not yet connected, but there is an ample selection of bottled beers and spirits. The food is American fare with a decent variety of Boar's Head sandwiches, burgers, and other staples. I had the kobe burger with guacamole and it was delicious. The beef was cooked exactly they way I like (medium-rare), and the guacamole was as gloriously mediocre as I could have hoped. I also had a cup of chili that I wish had come before my burger, but was quite satisfying nonetheless.
It's hard for any establishment to stand out along the crowded streets of New Hope, but this one does just fine. If easy American cuisine is what you're after, John & Peter's will not disappoint.
P.S. They DO allow smoking in the outside section (don't know about the inside), which is a turn-off for many people.
My friends and I stopped here for a few drinks towards the end of our New Hope day trip. Â We had a few rounds outside in front of a big fan. Â Comfy space, cheap drinks, good nachos, fantastic people-watching. Â I think we got a few free rounds in there, we were all puzzled at how an entire afternoon of drinking between four of us amounted to less than $60. Â I would love to come back to see some live music next time.
Review Source:fun little dive bar in New Hope. stopped by here during bar hopping while I was staying in New Hope.
nice bartenders, fun atmosphere. i actually find it kinda cool that they let you smoke in the bar. good for the smokers, and luckily there weren't too many people smoking that it bothered me.
Spent the weekend in New Hope with my girlfriend and we wound up spending both weekend nights here. Â Some pretty good music and great ambiance. Â We'd never heard of the bands before but were pleasantly surprised. Â It's a rock venue but there were certainly a variety of bands within the genre. Â We saw a singer/songwriter, a prog rock band, a jam band and an alt rock band in just two nights. Â It can get little crowded at times but we were able to get a table both nights. Â The table service was a little slow and cigarette was a little too thick. Â Drink prices were about average. Â This place is definitely a good time.
Review Source:Been going here every Monday for two years and it is - hands down - THE BEST OPEN MIC NIGHT EVER!
I wouldn't call the food prices cheap, but they're definitely competitive. Â On "Recession Wednesdays," everything on the menu is 50% off which is great!
The wait staff is friendly, the live music is always good and the vibe is laid back. Â They allow smoking which knocks it down a star, as I'm a non-smoker. Â Apart from that, I'll keep coming back until I'm gone.
Good place to go to hear local bands. Fine if you wanna just have a drink. I don't know about eating here though. It's small, so if it's packed, it can feel a bit uncomfortable. I often end up standing in front of the bathroom door. Basically, if you want to listen to live music and have a few drinks, you'll enjoy it. If you want drinks and food, I'd go somewhere else.
Review Source:This place gets 5 stars when it doesn't deserve it for Big Sue and Mountain John. Â I cut my teeth at Juan y Pedro's and for me, it feels like home. Â I knew Big Jen Ran when she tended bar here - and saw many great Dead-COver bands and jam bands and all kinds of great musical acts here.
A great, great, great place. Â Even better in the dead of winter when the tourists have all gone away.
This is the only place I go to for drinks in New Hope. Always casual, never really ever crowded. I've been to see a couple of bands play inside, but I ultimately prefer sitting outside, with a big group, over tater tots and beers. If I get a seat at the outside bar that faces the sidewalk, I like to people watch during the day.
Review Source:First time for us...
A nice spot to grab a drink and munchie on a summer afternoon. Not crowded at all, except for the 3 guys having a great time at the bar. We had Margaritas (not very good at all) and Magic Hats along with a couple of appetizers.
The deep fried pickles with dipping sauce were excellent (thanks for the tip, Mike) and the potstickers were just okay.
We'll have to give it another try next time we are in town.
John and Peter's is the classic dive bar - dark, small, strong drinks, cheap prices. Â No need to dress to impress. Â The side patio/bar is a great place to hang and people watch in the warmer months.
I've only eaten here a couple of times, I'm usually here for the beverages. Â
The only negative is the smoking.
I forgot what it was like to be in a place that has a menu and still allows smoking. It was like one of those what's wrong with this picture games. We walked in and instantly I noticed ashtrays and I was like, "Oh, that's quaint. They haven't removed those yet." Then you sit down and all of a sudden smoke rolls over you and you look at your cell phone clock and see that the year is in fact 2008 and not 1981. Then you turn to your friend and have a discussion about how only Philadelphia has the smoking ban in effect. So there's smoking. If you can deal with it while you eat, keep on reading...
The food (I had a sandwich) was surprisingly good and the sweet potato fries were good as well. Â The service was just fine, but that was because the place wasn't very full on a lazy Saturday afternoon. While at the bar, the bar tender and the server for the lower floor were smoking in between handling food. Doctors used to smoke in the operating room; I'm sure it doesn't hurt around food.
The ceiling is very low and the lighting has that brown orange hue of dive bars from the 1980s that were coming off just being bars during the 1970s.
I guess what really sets this place apart is the live music. Normally it supposed to be full and the acts that come through are really great.
So, all in all, if you can tolerate smoke, this place has some tasty food, draft beer, full bar, and a pleasant atmosphere to be with a group of people.
Total dive, but I love this place.
This is the set-up: Â you enter into a small bar with a few stools, a couple booths and some TVs. Â Next, you'll slide the large wooden door open and step down into a dark, smokey venue with a 6.5 foot ceiling. Â There's a stage, about 10 booths, and some standing room too. Â It's tiny, but that's what makes it a great place to see a show. Â
I can't remember everything on tap, but there's only about 5 or 6 choices. Â I usually drink Yuenling or Anchor Steam. Â The food isn't great, but it's ok, and they have a bunch of veggie items. Â I like the fries with truffle oil.
Rock on, John and Peter's!
The greatest bar known to man!
I spent many a drunken night enjoying the lovely atmosphere here. Â The 6 foot ceilings help hold in the smokey must(it's in PA, so, yeah, you can still smoke inside). Â The blood, sweat, and tears of local and touring bands over the past 25 years line the walls, as well as their show poster.
Live music 365 days a year, this place has given rise to such great acts from Ween to Johnny's Dance Band to Penn and Teller to Birdie Num Num and the Spirit Squad.
So, let the Jameson drown and the Yeungling chase your blues away, and you'll be okay at John and Peter's.
One of the best dive bars I have ever been to!
Located right next to the swankiest NYC wanna-be dance party, this 6-ft tall ceilinged hole in the wall has the friendliest and most helpful waiter ever, good prices on imported beers and the most willing to talk about any type of shit you want clientele.
I didn't want to leave this place and I think it would be pretty easy to get laid here.
This restaurant, bar and music venue has been around since 1972 and has been owned by John and Peter since then! Â There's live music every night of the year. Â It's a great bar and a great hang to see live music. Â Beware if you are fortunate enough to catch a secret hometown show by WEEN at J&P's you will be sandwiched among a ton of fans in this very small venue, but it will be an experience not to be missed. Â During the summer you can dine or drink on the side outdoor patio. Â Cool space and good times can be found at J&P's any night of the week.
