I have been to Kelso's twice - mostly because it is one of the only restaurants/bars in NKC that I know of. It is a great place to watch a game as the bar is nice and has a pretty good bar selection with a few craft beers sprinkled in. The food is OK. It hasn't ever been bad but also hasn't blown me away. The service is always friendly, but is pretty slow. However since I am there to watch a game I don't notice it as much.

It is a place I would go back again to watch a game, but probably would choose somewhere else if I was in a hurry or wanted to eat a good lunch.

I love Kelso's pizza - it is consistenly delicious.  Their service isn't always the fastest, so when I can, I prefer to pick up pizza to-go, but I love that they are in downtown NKC, convenient to Screenland on Armour, and they are locally owned and operated, which is always a good thing to support when you can!

Tried Kelso's for a second time. The first time made me ill. The second time was no different. Something in the water? Avoid the Sausage Sammie and the Johnny Strada. Also my friend had a pathetic attempt at a pizza which was horrible, overpriced and tiny.

Bottom line... the food sucks, the service sucks, but fortunately they've yet to screw up the beer. I won't be going back ever, even if it was free.

REALLY OVERPRICED. Online menu prices are not accurate -- need to be updated. Pizza is very meh. Ingredients not fresh. Will not be returning.

I've been wanting to try this place for awhile.  I frequent the Screenland Armour quite  a bit and there aren't a ton of restaurants around.  Plus, for some reason North Kansas City restaurants just don't have a ton of Yelp reviews!

We've been living in Columbus Park for almost a year now and a couple of months ago one of our favorite pizza places near by (Antonio's Pizza) closed shop.  We love Caddy Shack's cheap and delicious pizza but were in the mood for something a little different.

Met up with Greg S and some of his work friends one evening.  They had already had a few beers and devoured a pizza but they were kind enough to let me have the last couple of slices of their pepperoni pizza.  DELICIOUS.  I like my pizza loaded with cheese and this did not disappoint.  Also, unless I am eating Chicago Style pizza, I like my crust on the thin side.  This is perfect.  If I'm comparing, I'd say the crust was most similar to Pizza Shoppe's.  I also ordered The Toss-up salad that  comes with crisp salad greens, pepperoni, cheese, black olives & croutons with your choice of house-made dressing.  I can't put my finger on it, but the salad was gross.  The waitress forgot to charge us for it, and I did not force myself to tell her because I couldn't choke down more than a couple of bites.  I will not order a salad here again.  They don't have a ton of beer selection on tap but what they do have is Blue Moon (one of my favorites) and it was more affordable than most places in town.

This place as others have mentioned is your typical sports bar and I've technically only dined-in here once.  We have started a trend of getting our pizza to-go when we're feeling so inclined.  I would definitely be willing to go here again with a group of friends possibly before or after a night out at the Screenland Armour!

This is a typical bar and grill.  Our service was horrible.  We had to go to the bar several times from our table to get napkin, silverware and drinks.  Even after we had placed our order the followup was forgotten and we had to self serve.  The service gets one star.  Honestly, you'd be happier if they would just post a sign which says occasional table service head to the bar if you need anything, as the bartender was nice and helpful.

The food is very inspired.  We had a buffalo chicken tender which was okay.  They do have a $2 draw special on Royals game nights, so that is redeeming.  I'd give it two and a half stars.

The venue looks nice.  It is clean in the serving area.  It also looks like it could be fun if a bit busier.

I'm not sure if I would go back.  It is possible it was a random bad service experience, but I watched around the store and it seemed consistent.

Before going to Kelsos Pizza I reviewed the menu online and read a couple of reviews. It seemed that Wings were a favorite item of past diners, and they looked good on the Picture menu i viewed online. They displayed "naked wings" (no breading) and large full sized wing sections. So we ordered a 25 piece wing platter, the price was good $16.99. They were indeed breaded wings, and somewhat average sized . They were also soggy with oil, perhaps the fryer tempeture was a littlelow. They reminded me of the wings from the freezer section at your grocery store. The wing sauce was decent.   4 out of 10
I ordered the MVP (large) Grand slam Pizza. The toppings were fresh though somewhat scarce . The sauce was ok about a 5 0f 10. The dough was hand tossed and formed into the pan, but didnt have that homemade flavor. All together a 6 out of 10 for the pizza.
The service and staff were friendly. They only had a few beers on tap , but the Boulevard wheat beer i ordered was nice and cold and was properly garnished with a lemon.
I would have to say the place is all in all a 6 out of 10, I wouldnt drive out of my way to eat here and I probably wont go back. Not a bad place at all but very average.

Is it a pizza place? Sandwich shop? Italian restaurant? I have no idea.

A coworker raved and raved about this place to me, so I agreed to go there for lunch. It's decent, nothing to write home about. The meatballs in my meatball sub were actually pretty tasty, nice bite of garlic, but the sad sauce tasted like it was straight out of a can. I hope that's not the sauce they use on their pizzas.

I'd go back if invited, but it wouldn't be first on my list.

    Atmosphere 3 stars

This place is OK at best.

Ordered a Meatball Sub and Roastbeef Sub.  Both tasted ok, and weren't really bad, they just weren't that Good.

Meatball sub should have marinara (red sauce) included right............well I had to ask for a side of sauce and got hit with an upcharge.   Huh???

Twenty bucks for two sandwichs, both of which were OK, and no drinks, no extras........

Having a hard time with this local establishment.

I'll try to describe Kelso's the best I can. It's like your neighborhood Applebee's only this really IS your neighborhood and not your franchised Applebee's. Kelso's does the neighborhood bar/restaurant thing right. It's clean, service is good, there's a respectable amount of traffic in and out of the bar.

What surprised me were the Hot Wings. I sorta consider myself a buffalo wing connoisseur so it comes with high esteem when I say the wings aren't bad. They have some heat to them with the right amount of tang. But the best part is the skin has a little crisp to it while the meat inside is still tender and juicy. Typically with a slightly crispy skin comes dried out meat, but not at Kelso's. So Bravo.

Unique food, unique setting.  Classy/sportsy.  When the power was out at home, the hubby and I had to go somewhere to watch the Chiefs game.  It wasn't too crowded, as in there weren't tables crammed in next to each other.  The best part is they participate in the Best Buy Reward Zone Dining program.

    Try their bruschetta, its delicious.

I went for lunch and had their pizza side salad combo. The house dressing was my favorite. I know it was probably a zillion calories but I loved it so much I dipped my pizza in it =).

I'm glad I found this little place so close to my work, I will def. be going back.

Oh yes one more thing, it gets 5 stars for lunch atmosphere.

I actually like the pizza quite a bit, it has plenty of toppings and good flavor.    I often forget that this place is an option when I'm in the mood for pizza even though it's among the better pizzas in the area.

I've had some minor service issues in the past.   Nothing big, just occasional slowness or forgetfulness.   I also thought the beer prices were a little high, but only just barely.

I'm only giving 3 stars because of the recent change to a sports bar theme.  I liked it better the way it was before.

I'm confused by the reviews calling the location boring, gray, dead, depressing, etc.    To me, North Kansas City's downtown area is one of the more charming in the metro area.   As for nightlife, there are 10 other bars within walking distance of Kelso's.  It's definitely not a dead zone.  Especially for a town of just 4,500!

Kelso's is a decent place in NKC. They recently changed the decor from a more upscale feel to a sports bar with all sorts of stuff on the walls, which I just don't get. I think the whole sports bar concept is overdone (especially with Chappell's right across the street) but I'll get off my soapbox and get to the food.

Kelso's has great pizza and pretty good sandwiches. You cannot go wrong ordering their pizza. I love the garlic salad dressing (it's pink!) but I really wish they did a better job on the salads. I'm pretty sure they use bagged lettuce and it's always a little wilted which is a bummer.

Service is typically very attentive and the food comes out quickly, so that is a plus.

So here's the deal...sometimes I'm a little hard to impress. I've also erroneously been told...that it isn't all about me!  Before you get too concerned, I don't believe a word of it!  My first mistake here was that I was not all that hungry, but, I was thirsty.  If ya' know what I mean. It was Friday and I had worked hard all week.  I just wanted to relax and enjoy the company of a small group of new friends.  So naturally, I started with a beer.  It was Happy Hour (4pm -7pm Monday- Friday, $2.00 bottled beer, 1/2 price wine and well drinks).  I decided to have the artichoke dip with jalapeno cheddar flour tortilla chips.  My dip was very small, only warm, and not very cheesy. They did sprinkle Parmesan on the chips, but, it just rolled off.  The chips were just OK.  Everyone around me seemed to make better food choices.  I only had one beer, and I'm already making poor decisions.  My man ordered a meal commiserate with his culinary intelligence, grilled Reuben sandwich on grilled marbled Rye bread, served with pasta salad.  The corned beef was piled high, the bread was crispy and the pasta salad had basil and tomatoes.  Darn, foiled again.  I'm the one who is supposed to have the culinary genius, and he is too big to take the sandwich away from without a mess.  So, I ordered another beer to drown my sorrows regarding the lukewarm, gloppy dip.  I guess the moral of the story is that you must be wise when you order at Kelso's.  Some of it is good, aka, grilled Reuben sandwich with pasta salad.  I probably wouldn't have the artichoke dip ever again, even with three beers.

So the late Bill Kelso played pro ball and at least one of his sons was an outstanding football player.  This is why Kelso's is now a sports bar/ grille, with all 4 televisions tuned to sports and memorabilia on every wall.  The place was literally empty at 4 in the afternoon, which is O.K..  The acoustics are still awful, and the Sirius radio was tuned to music I hate.  One woman was the hostess, bartender, and waitress, so the service was, by necessity, sketchy.  The pizza was still not-bad, especially the crust, but they're called by baseball manager's names, -Tommy LaSorda, Billy Martin, and so on.
Seems like Kelso's may be in competition with Chappell's, a sports-themed restaurant practically across the street, whose food leaves everything to be desired.  Some of us think sports is the opiate of the masses.

What? Your kitchen is closed at 10pm on a Friday night? Well damn. Your website doesn't say anything about this little fact.

Kelso's is a good enough place for a beer and to catch a game on one of the big screens or to kill some time drinking before heading down the street to the cinema for a movie.

Other than that... the area around it is pretty dead unless you're working in the district of warehouses and need a place for an after work brew.

My best bud and I found this little spot one afternoon and were back the next evening and its always on our list. The atmosphere is great. very neat inside, clean modern yet a small Chicago feel, without the crowd  which is a plus in my book. I've had many dishes they serve and they all taste great! My favorite is their signature "kitchen sink" pizza. I'd recommend this place for casual dinning and entertaining friends. Outdoor seating in the spring and summer. Call to see when they have live music.

Not bad.  Fun little gem in the middle of a depressing and gray part of town.  Pizza is really nice, but they do a great job on the martini's!
