Wow. What a friendly joint. Â Bartender was very welcoming and all of the locals hanging out at the bar were quite open to new people. Â Really cheap prices. Free pool and popcorn. Â Great layout for a group to hang out. Â I agree with one of the commenters above that it's a dive but there definitely weren't any shady folks there. Â
This place is ripe for hipster takeover. Maybe Strawberry Hill will become KC's Williamsburg.
Friday night, we began our KCK mini-crawl and it spilled over into Saturday night. Â Good God, I am ready to pack up and move back to Downtown KCK. Â We usually hang out in Downtown KCMO on Saturday nights, but shooting across I-70 to Johnnie's took about three minutes. Â
So, we pull up to this place, and the memories of fifteen or twenty years ago flood my mind. Â BF and I both used to hang out at Johnnie's when we were younger, so we were pretty excited to visit and see what had changed. Â So, what HAD changed?? Â Nothing! Â This is a good thing. Â The pool table has moved, but that's it.
It was about midnight, and all of five people were here, including the bartender and the owner/manager.  Yup!  We got the standard KCK "welcome" shouted at us.  Then the five of them turned back to singing "Camptown Races" at the top of their lungs as they watched a cowboy movie clip on YouTube.  Indeed, they were having a little singalong!  It was outstanding!  When that one was over, they looked up some more.  Finally, they asked if I had any requests, and I felt in the mood for Walk the Line, so we heard that.  Everyone was friendly and chatted with us.  I felt right at home. Â
As for the beer selection, well, this was pretty fantastic as well. Â Widmer, Stella, Rolling Rock, Guinness, and I believe a Blvd, along with Bud Light. Â Sweet Jesus, I could live here! Â Also a decent bottle selection! Â Free popcorn. Â Tasty!
We ended up drinking here until closing, Â and I left KCK feeling satisfied and warm-fuzzies happy. Â Can't really ask for anything more!
Johnnie's On 7th is an awesome little KCK dive. I like to think of it as the equivalent to Midtown's News Room or Chez Charlies but without the panhandlers and crackheads wandering in. They have your standard working man's beers (Bud, Bud Light, Coors, etc) and a decent selection of others. There are tons of liquors to choose from and the staff is amazing. Owner Chris and often-bartender Ryan are hilarious and keep the patrons happy.
I like coming here on Tuesday nights when Ryan slings the dranks and when you can sometimes catch KC's most talented honky tonk and 'billy performers hanging out, playing smokin' solo sets, and knocking back well whiskey shots.
Yes, there is free popcorn, and yes it was most likely popped yesterday. So what. You're not too good for it. Have some drinks, stare at the tv, listen to some Hank tunes, make new friends.
P.S. They do take credit cards but paying cash is the way to do it at a dive.
