My mom & I went here for our Mystery Train (Whistle Stop) dinner. Â We only waited about 15 minutes before being taken into the back dining room. Â We were greeted w/the characters from the Mystery Train & coaxed on what would be happening during our stay on Whistle Stop Train. Â The entertainment was amazing & of course kept us on our toes and guessing for who the murderer was.
As for the food goes..... we didn't receive an appetizer (it was pretty hectic & chaotic), our ceasar sald was good, I requested a Sprite & received a Coke (again, understandable considering the time they were allowed to get us drinks) then we received our entree which was a filet minon which was cooked to PERFECTING, melt in your mouth tasty! Â Along w/the filet minon we received roasted red potatoes & broccoli in this cheese sauce that was incredibly flavourful & actually used the left over sauce to dip my potatoes in. Â Dessert was a cold piece of apple pie which I guess this is my personal preference, I prefer warm apple pie. Â Over all the food was OK but the steak itself was good so I'll be bringing my husband here for his monthly carnivore fix!
Some time ago I finally had a chance to make it out here. Â Like the Savoy and other hit-or-miss legends, the Golden Ox has an allure you just can't stay away from.
It's one of the few businesses that survived yet another in the rounds of floods that plagued the bottoms over centuries and while the decor is distinctly 1970s, the food and drink is distinctly classic.
Great selection of steaks, a decently-made Old Fashioned, and a helpful and courteous waiter made for a great evening.
Don't bother! It is so sad. I used to love Golden Ox when I lived in KC so was excited to take my son here when we were in town. But it is not at all what it used to be. The decor is so dated, but that's not bad unless it smells like a public restroom, which it did. The food was mediocre at best. It was a complete waste of money. The only good thing, and why I give it one star, was the nice waitress. I feel bad for this KC institution. It needs a good management team to boost the quality but keep its old integrity. By the way, someone needs to teach the bartender how to make an Old Fashioned. It DOES NOT have Sprite in it.
