If you want to be ignored by your bartender/waitress this is the place for you.
The food was good and the prices are reasonable, if the waitress/bartender would have actually given me my order of fries and the water I ordered (of course she got my boyfriend everything he ordered). There were two women bartending. One (who coincidentally was not our bartender) waited and checked on us more times throughout the two hours we spent there. The one who supposedly was our bartender checked on us three times throughout those two hours.
It's not like it was busy enough to be ignored. Unfortunately, with that kind of service, I won't be going back anytime soon. It's sad that this place gets a bad rep from a few terrible servers. Doesn't matter how reasonably priced this place is, I'd rather go to a chain restaurant that has good service than support a local business with shoddy service.
3.5 stars if that option existed
They have a huge selection of beers and ciders. Â It's a nice atmosphere, and the server was attentive. Â The food was very good. Â
The only criticism I have is this: Â The menu offers 3 different sizes of Fish and Chips. Â I ordered the King's Size which consisted of french fries and only three strips of battered fish about 1" wide and 6" long. Â It was very tasty, but it was $14!! Â For that price, I would expect more fish. Â
In case anyone at Kings Corner is reading this review -- Â You're more likely to have return customers if you serve more fish in the Kings Size fish and chips meal. Â I'd like to return, but that price has decreased the chances of my returning.
3.5 stars if that was an option. Â Friday night dinner, nice weather so we ate on the patio.
Beer list has a good selection. Â Only gripe is that we're in the end of April and it was still heavily skewed towards porters and stouts instead of moving to warmer weather stuff.
Dirty Chips was our app. Â Greasy, hit the spot. Â Had the fish & chips for my meal, better half had shepherds pie. Â Fish was pretty good, batter was light and soaked up the lemon. Â Shepherds pie was very good as well. Â Had a Wells Banana Bread with the app so we pretty much did dessert first
Our server was attentive and did a nice job considering the distance from the bar/kitchen to the patio. Â Will go back again.
Note on the Shepherds Pie - yes it has green peppers. Â I missed the memo about Shepherds Pie being some sacred recipe that should never be tweaked. Â Get over yourselves
My first time here was yesterday, and it was a good visit. The service was attentive (once we left the bar area), and the food was good. I had the shepherd's pie, and it was one of the better ones I had. The only thing I didn't like was that the menu said there were peas, carrots, and mushrooms in it, and it actually had green peppers and carrots, no mushrooms or peas. I've never had a shepherd's pie with green peppers, so that was odd, but not bad tasting.
My husband had a beef brisket sandwich, and he said it was good. It did seem a bit small though, and it didn't really fill him.
Overall I think this place has good potential.
OK so first off let me say that I really really want to like this place! It has all the makings to be something really great and different for the area...buttt the past two times I've been here, I feel like it has just come up short. So first the positives...Pretty good beer selection and friendly enough service, but the food...the food needs a little bit of work.
I had lunch there today and I ordered the Shepherd's Pie. First off Shepherd's Pie should be made with lamb, but I get that some peeps skeeve at the thought of it so I totally get the ground beef which is perfectly fine.
Now it's not that my Shepherd's Pie was bad, it just wasn't great, basically I could love it or leave it, which isn't the way to get me coming back to your place to spend $$$. So with that said basically Shepherds Pie should contain either ground beef, or lamb with peas, carrots, onions and topped with Mashed Taters. This Shepherd's Pie had carrots, onions, mushrooms(which I ain't mad at) green peppers(?!?!?!?!) and chunks of what tasted like potatoes(?!?!?) topped with more mashed potatoes, and the beef was a little gristly. So what I can't understand is the green peppers and the chunks of mashed potatoes in the pie. Did they run out of peas and think "Oh hey, soooo these peppers are green, like peas, maybe they won't notice the difference???"
Shepherd's Pie isn't rocket science, so for them to mess this up is inexcusable to me. We live in an age where you can google how to to create solar panels for your home out of soda bottles, I think the very least King's Corner could do would be able to google an authentic Shepherds Pie Recipe...Just sayin'.
Not sure why the clothing of the waitresses is such a huge issue for everyone. I thinek they look cute. Maybe some tights under the skirts for those too prudish for skin ;)
Anyway, I have been here with my husband probably 4 or 5 times since they opened  and I have had great food and great service every time. The stars were...ahem....fried chicken, and the texas toast brisket sandwich! Definitely not diet food, but oh so good. The cheese platter is really yummy with some excellent cheese, bisquits, grapes and a cherry chutney to die for. The beer tasting is a fun way to try some of the many beers they have and I love the mason jars for serving. Overall a fun place to be. We were there 2 weeks ago and will be back again soon.
I am so excited that there is a cool bar in Jenkintown... you finally don't have to go to center city or Chestnut Hill/Mount Airy  to have a a fun night out!
I am a big fan of King's Corner. We have been there several times and each time we have had solid bar fare and great beer!
I don't understand all of the negative reviews? There is not a better pub in Jenkintown/Glenside or Abington! The food is solid and priced correctly... the chicken fingers are fresh not frozen! The fish and chips are a good portion and worth the money! Â The bangers and mash are great! The specials are always solid!
They have a great beer selection and the atmosphere is wonderful!
I have been there for lunch with friends, dinner with friends, my husband with and w/o kids and have never been disappointed!
We just went with 11 people (kids and adults) and had a solid dinner and dining experience!
I am not sure, who is giving the King's Corner, such bad reviews but I wish more people, who love it and there are many, would give King's Corner a fair review before it disappears!
It is worth trying!
Eh. For a place that allegedly spend 300 thousand dollars and renovation, I dont think they got their moneys worth. Both times I went, the food was subpar, the shephards pie was very vinegary, which was strange, and the burger I got was nothing special. The bottle beer selection is very good, but the draft selection is poor. Also very small, and badly arranged. I cant say there is a good reason to come back.
Review Source:Awesome beer selection. Food is decent for a pub. The fish in my fish & chips seemed small, but plenty of fries to fill me up. The other people at my table seemed to have decent sized portions for what they ordered (bangers & mash, chicken pot pie, and chicken and chips), so maybe my smallish fish was a fluke.
I don't get all the complaints about the waitress uniforms. They are mellow by today's standards. They're not like the uniforms at Tilted Kilt or Hooters. The staff was very friendly and the food came out fast. I would go back there again if I'm in the area.
It's the O'Connor in me that craves a good pub and it's the eternal optimist that took me through the door of Kings Corner yesterday. Â But it's the humanist that will make sure I don't go back.
At first, my friend and I were impressed with the interior overhaul; nice tin ceiling and exposed stone walls, but we both let out a disappointed moan when we set our eyes on the young waitress. Â Before we could say a thing, she knew what our pained expression was about. Â Really, it's 2012. Â You need to dress up your waitstaff in micro mini skirts and low cut tops? Â Yes said the owner with whom we brought this up with, you do. Â
Second, the "King's" portion of fish and chips was overpriced. Â
Third, I'm heading back to McMenamin's in Mt. Airy. Â
It's the O'Connor in me that will remember not to frequent the Kitchen Bar or Drakes either... that's just the kind of hairpins we are.
I went with a couple of friends this past Sunday. Our waitress, Irene, was very attentive and sweet. I had the Bananas Foster French Toast, which was delicious(and generously portioned). I also had the Chesterfield Ale; very light and went well the breakfast(who needs coffee)? My friends also enjoyed it. We'll be back.
Review Source:Well wifie and I got adventurous tonight and tried a new restaurant/pub in Jenkintown called the King's Corner. All was great as we both started with a cup of thick, creamy, New England clam chowder soup. I chose the Shepherd's Pie (Ground beef, mushrooms and carrots, topped with homemade mashed potatoes). Wifie decided on the British Chicken in a Pot (Slow-simmered chicken, veggies and potatoes). We didn't drink alcohol but I will tell you that they have an enormous selection of beers from around the world. The food was very good taste wise and I had no complaints about my choice at all. IMAGINE THE LOUD SOUND OF A SIREN AS I WILL TELL YOU IT ALL WENT DOWN HILL when wifie chewed into a chicken bone. Totally freaked out she did not come close to finishing her entree. And luckily did not damage a tooth. I complained to our server (who couldn't be nicer) and said she would bring it to the management's attention. Did they deduct it from the check. NO. Should they have deducted it from the check. YES. Well after paying $37.84 including gratuity we left. Outside of our obvious ugly incident and to our surprise no handicap entrance I will not be cruel and go on about how horrible this place was. Only other negative is that they are lacking seating, a comfortable area to wait for a table, and the seating arrangement stinks. If you're on a diet I don't think there was one thing that would be appropriate if you are a calorie counter. So if you are on Weight Watchers STAY AWAY.
Review Source:I've been back more than a few times!
The Chicken & Chips are great in quality, but a little inconsistent in proportion--sometimes King Size is too much for me, and other times it's just fine.
Both the Meatloaf and their ground short-rib burger were very pleasant surprises. I'd recommend them to anyone!
The wings were disappointing, though. I like that they serve them whole instead of sections, but mine were not crispy at all which I prefer (Moriarity's downtown is a great example of what I like in whole wings).
As for the beer: It's almost like they're afraid to try anything too outlandish on draft, or as one other reviewer stated, maybe they don't want to shell out for a delivery straight from Scotland. Â The beer is also a bit pricey for the glass size.
That being said, I'm more than happy to alternate between Yards IPA and Innis & Gunn. If you feel the same, their bottle list has a number of tasty options!
Okay, that's it. I can't take this place anymore. I SO wanted this to be a nice local place to get a beer and a snack before dinner, or whatever. A place where my boyfriend could watch the game. But try as I may, I can't take the nasty atmosphere. For as long as they have the female waitstaff wearing those trashy uniforms, they're gonna have a trashy ambience. I felt so uncomfortable sitting there while the female bartender wearing a super-slutty uniform spoke only to my boyfriend and ignored me. No thanks. If that's what I wanted I'd go to Hooters.
Review Source:A great disappointment. As a Scot I'd been looking foward to going to a place that would recognise and (hopefully) do justice to Scottish beer and cuisine, unlike the MANY pseudo-Brit and pseudo-Irish places in Phila. I was very wrong indeed. NO cuisine (just because you've salmon on the menu and everything comes with "chips" doesn't make it alright), not even tatties & nips OR cock a leekie soup. As far as the beer: Standard that I could get anywhere in or outside the city. And just f.y.i., Belhaven is Scotland's budweiser. Nothing from Broughton, Orkney, or even Brew Dog to be found. Insulting to be served in a Mason jar with a handle as well.
It is possible to to re-do this properly in this day and age of being able to get beer from all over the world and ingredients to make practically anything. It takes common sense and in this case, a desire to set yourself apart from the rest (see above) and be the ONLY Scottish pub/restaurant in the Phila area. In the meantime you may as well celebrate st. patrick's day and Guy Fawkes day and count me oot.
The only reason I give two stars instead of one is the decor, which is quite attractive. The rest of the place is a joke. A "Scottish-English" pub? The owners are trying to play off the popularity of British pubs, yet obviously don't know the first thing about Britain.
The biggest crime against all things British is the way they serve beer. My "pint" came in a jam jar with a handle - more appropriate to Cracker Barrel than a pub. The glass could hold maybe 12 oz, and with the crappy pour I got, I paid $5 for about 10 oz of beer. A British pint is 20 oz, and I would have settled for an American pint (16 oz), but what they were serving was ridiculous. The female staff was dressed in dull-witted, tarty outfits. Miniskirt-length kilts? Yeah, that's what all the women in Scotland wear. The food was overpriced. A "king" size fish and chips had three skinny, chicken-finger-shaped fillets. The batter was good, but the portion was a rip-off at $13.
With the exception of the decor, this place needs a major overhaul.
Food was good. Wife and I both had the fish and chips. Her "Queen Size" was priced right: $8 for two large fillets, and the chips were nice and crisp. My "King Size" was the same quality, but over-priced; it was $13 and all I got was one more fillet.
The beer menu had two or three interesting selections (Fuller's Porter, Wells Bombardier ESB), a few standard but decent selections (Guinness, etc), plus the usual crap (Coors Light).
Music was a little loud. The place looked nice, definitely an upgrade over Archie's; it's no longer a dark hole in the wall. I agree with the other reviewer: the waitresses were a bit immodest.
Be aware they were cash only the night we went. They have an ATM on-site, so it wasn't a big deal.
Took the family for lunch last week. Â My wife, daughter, and I ordered sandwiches; Â young son had a corn dog. Â
Pros - Â Sadly, it's all about potential. Â The menu, if done well, would be just about perfect for a pub. Â Made to order sandwiches, fried fish and chicken, some English standards, etc. Â Also, there's a decent selection of beers (local and national crafts, Int'l standards). Â The place is physically very comfortable, with a large horseshoe bar in front and several tables in a connected dining room toward the back. Â Plenty of big-screens for sports. Â I did notice that the barstools had no backs, however, which IMO is just crazy for a sports pub. Â If you're going to watch a multi-hour game at a bar, you want a back on your stool...
Cons - Â Just really clunky. Â My beers had a soapy tinge, as if the mugs weren't fully rinsed. Â The bread was charred instead of toasted (not "rustic", more like "burnt"). Â The bacon on my daughter's BLT had been overcooked to the point of being blackened and dry. Â I ordered my sandwich with "Boston Bibb" (it's on the menu), was asked to confirm my order later, and then still got a big hunk of iceberg. Â Overall, the sandwiches were just OK. Â The construction made them difficult to hold or eat without them falling apart (partly the over-toasted bread, partly the kooky lettuce). Â The boy loved the corn dog, but halfway through ripped off the fried crust and just ate the dog. Â Who knows what that means, though. Â He's only 5. Â Next time he might just eat the crust and leave the dog...
About that lettuce... Â they seem to have made a decision that when a sandwich has lettuce on it, they will pull a big hunk of lettuce off the head and plop it on the sandwich whole, instead of taking the leaves apart (all three of our sandwiches were served this way). Â This is really odd to me. Â You wind up with a big lump on one side and nothing on the other, so you have to disassemble and reassemble yourself, anyway. Â Just weird.
Fries appeared to be fresh cut taters (good!), but were soggy and limp from being fried in not-hot-enough oil (bad!). Â Wife and I each had a cup of their chowder, as well, which was delicious (good!), but served tepid (bad!).
They have continued the Drake's practice of dressing their servers in borderline-breastaurant style (short kilts, tight shirts, knee-high socks), which frankly, I could do without. Â I just don't need that dynamic going on between server and customer. Â Creeps me out a little.
Prices were a tad high, but if they straighten out the kitchen and fix the soapy mugs it would be worth it.
