Well, my previous review was the first one for this place and it was 1 1/2 years ago, so I thought it best to offer a brief update. We have actually been here quite a few times and always for lunch. We were just there today and had one of our favorites, the bento box, one with teriyaki beef & one with teriyaki salmon. Both were quite good.
I think this place has been able to stand the test of time and is better now than when it first opened.
We do continue to suspect that all the help is Chinese rather than Japanese, but they do a fine job.
We've never been there for dinner, but if the grandchildren are in town and they want to see someone slapping the spatula on the oven top and flipping shrimp into his hat and pocket, bring them for the show.
Very interesting location at the end of small complex next to The Publix. I was a bit disappointed because the actual hibachi grille was not available during lunch. Â However the food quality was definitely excellent.
We ordered shumai and gyoza which was very tasty and lightly drenched with sauce. Â Lunch shrimp hibachi was good portion and more than enough for one person. My coworkers ordered eel rolls and maki combo special. Â They were well prepared with more fish than the rice which is always good.
I would recommmend to anyone nearby looking for humble and delicious japanese lunch.
We love this restaurant!, as a chef we appreciate when restaurants as Kumo take care of their customers, they are always pleased to help with good suggestion from the menu, ask for Linda the waitress she is really good! Everything is fresh and well presented. We go there once a week and always try differents plates! Definitely our favorite restaurant!
Review Source:We tried the hibachi and the meat and seafood were both very good. I am a fan of Benihana and love their sauces. Kumo uses some sort of mayonnaise sauce and a teriyaki tasting one. I prefer the Benihana ginger and mustard based sauces.
All in all though I'd recommend it if you don't mind the sauces
Drove by several times...always getting a weird vibe - perhaps it was the blacked out windows
Dropped in one night for takeout - the decor is dark and worn; maybe it was just when showed up, but there were few guest, and there was zero atmo
The person working the cash not under the Common Japanese words for tuna, yellowtail, nor eel!?
The quality of the food was more in line with a buffet sushi house, I you know what I mean...went to Blu Sushi on Mcgregor the week after, and for about 15% more, I got great food, great atmo in a very cool restaurant
I have dined at Kumo many times, both in Cape Coral and Fort Myers. I usually get the Hibachi grilled items (steak and shrimp). On our latest trip we decided to try the sushi menu. We were pleasantly surprised. The food was fresh (VERY IMPORTANT with sushi) and quite tasty. We had a voucher from a discount website called http://www.restaurant.co… This is a good site to use it saves lots of money. Back to Kumo, we started with Tempura Shrimp, they were not greasy at all and just the right size. We over ordered on rolls, but it is hard to review if you don't taste several items. We had a Crouching Tiger, a Vision, a Shrimp Tempura with aspargus instead of cucumbers and an Asian Muffin also no cukes. The service was what i would call family style as we never knew who our waitress was. The whole team waited on us at some point and everyone was very good. We sat at a table not the Sushi bar but maybe next time.
Review Source:Good Americanized style sushi, which is all we had. Service could have been better. Prices were on par with other local sushi places. A chipped sake cup? Seriously?
I'd return.
Table service with full menu, sushi bar, or Teppanyaki.
**UPDATE**
Well, I returned. Mismatched silverware. WTH? The sushi was ok, but we had the sushi-$h!ts within 15 minutes of leaving. No going back.
Tried Kumo in Fort Myers because I had a http://restaurant.com I had been to the Cape Coral one before and did enjoy it. Â This Kumo is actually bigger and nicer than that one. Â We had hibachi and one roll. Â It was very good. Â Our chef was entertaining and with the exception of some of the rude comments he made was a fun experience. Â It was pricey though, even with my $25 gift certificate it was $51 with 2 adults and a child.
Review Source:Ignore the other reviews.
We have been going to this restaurant since it opened and love this restaurant. Â The hibachi is excellent, their lunch specials rock, and the sushi is the best in Fort Myers.
Last time we were there, the server noticed it was 5 minutes to the end of happy hour and took 2 round of drink orders immediately. Â She brought out the second round (2 for one drinks, beers) 40 minutes after happy hour was over, at no charge.
However, the food is the real draw.
We have been playing around with appetizers and find their pork dumplings (and anything raw) are out of this world. Â Full of juices and flavor - each person will want their own plate.
The hibachi is excellent and we have been going for their sushi
In short, these are top choices:
Gyoza (pork dumpling)
Sashimi appetizer (excellent, fresh)
Hibachi are all good (lunch Hibachi and Bento box specials have great prices)
Sushi - any and all rolls are awesome and reasonably priced. Â Look for a roll wrapped in cucumber instead of rice with cream cheese. Â It is OUTSTANDING.
A must visit in Fort Myers.
