Vegetarian burrito contains broccoli. I don't like broccoli, so I wish the server had told me when he explained it included zucchini, summer squash, carrots, refried beans covered in a mole sauce.
No bother; I attacked the burrito like a surgeon to remove the offending green. My plate looked like the remainders of a dissection in high school biology class but I got the job done.
This doesn't reflect poorly on the restaurant because the meal was delicious. The pre-entree salsa was especially original and tasteful.
It took about 20 minutes just to get our drinks,  45 minutes for someone to take our order.  I waited for another 30 minutes to get our food. Then after I ate i wanted to get the fuck out of there, I had to ask 2 different people just to get my damm check.  This was the 1st time that I haven't  tipped at a restaurant in a very long time.
oh and the food I pretty bland and shoddy at best.
On May 24, 2013 we hosted my brother & sister-in-law's wedding rehearsal dinner here and it was amazing! Â From the moment we contacted the restaurant to get information we were put in touch with the owner, Marisela, who went above and beyond. Â She and the entire staff were so helpful and professional. Â The event went off without a single problem and everyone (approximately 90 guests) raved about the food and service. Â The dinner was held in the outdoor courtyard and they decorated the area and tables so beautifully - it turned out to be such a special and fun evening.
Review Source:I ate lunch here with my parents last week, and it was excellent in every way. We sat on the back patio (enjoyed the shade and the warm afternoon). The chips and guacamole were better-than-standard, and my dad declared the margaritas to be one of the best he'd ever had (which is really saying something). My tacos were filling, the meat (one carnitas, one chicken) was moist and distinctly flavored (the chicken did not taste the same as the pork, that is). The whole meal was lovely, including attentive but not overbearing staff. The table and bathroom were very clean. If I lived closer, I'd eat here often.
Review Source:Why aren't the reviews better here? This place was bangin'. In fact, my meal was the best I had while in California.
I love Mexican food and know my dishes. The strawberry margaritas were suitably strong, and were not from a frozen concentrate mix. Delightful.
The salsa was complex in that there was certainly something sweet in there offsetting the spice. Nom.
I ordered the fish tacos, which came two ways with my choice of beans. Â I went with black beans and they were awesome. Â The fish tacos came with complementary sauces and garnishes that were truly delightful. Â I enjoyed our meal here lots and tipped well for a job well-done.
We enjoyed a wonderful family dinner at La Casa last Saturday evening. The owner and staff could not have been more accommodating with our ever growing party. Our waiter was the best, efficiently keeping track of all 19 of our entrée and drink orders - and with a smile!  The food was delicious - Especially the chicken taco salad! Great house margaritas too!
Review Source:Curiosity got the best of us, so we decided to give La Casa another shot on Sunday night, this time sitting at a table and ordering some margaritas and guacamole. Â These are very basic items that any mexican restaurant should be able to do at least somewhat well. Â I ordered a regular margarita and my boyfriend ordered a strawberry one. Â Both tasted watered down and not very good. Â Honestly, I've used cheap pre-made margarita mixes that tasted better. Â I seriously cannot understand the people who say this place makes a good margarita. Â Maybe there are certain bartenders who are better than others? Â Either way, I would never come back again to find out. Â Especially after trying the guacamole, which was very bland. Â It doesn't take a lot to make good guacamole, I make it at home all the time. Â This stuff was just pitiful. Â And their tortilla chips, while very crunchy, didn't have much flavor, either. Â Someone on yelp compared the chips to Juanita Juanita, but I have to strongly disagree, Juanitas taste fresh and good, while La Casa's tasted store bought. Â Is La Casa just catering to the drunk crowd who has lost their sense of taste and the tourists who don't know what good mexican food tastes like? Â Â
Just do yourself a favor and go a block down the street to Maya, the drinks and food are so much better, and the prices are about the same.
This is my fav food destination (at a nice sit-down place) in historic Sonoma - I can't resist eating here every time I visit! Â I'm not sure why they haven't received higher reviews. Â They are way cheaper than Maya restaurant, and the portion sizes are large. Â The food has always been excellent: pollo grilled and seasoned well, very fresh veggies and greens. Â Dining patio out back is nice in good weather. Â Fun or peaceful environment for dinner with friends or solo. Â They have some private seating if you so desire...
hooray for La Casa!
First and foremost the chips and salsa at this place are tied with Juanita's for the best all time ever!! The location is great, my husband I got married at the Mission so its fun to go in here to eat and look across the street and walk down memory lane. They also have a lovely outdoor patio.
I have never had a problem with the service(pretty surprised to see the recent scathing review), fabulous bar/bar staff(this is seriously 5 star worthy) and the food isn't bad at all. Its good, super edible. Its just not special and this town has some stiff competition. I would recommend coming in to anyone to give it a try, and I will certainly be back. This is definitely the nicest sit down Mexican restaurant in town, the rest are very casual.
Pretty impressed by their new Happy Hour which is monday through saturday from 4 to 10(wow). Â $3 beers & $5 house margaritas and $7 for top shelf with appetizers 5 for $12. That's a deal.
G.D. you, La Casa! I love your location, I love the ambiance, I love your happy hour, you're food's pretty good but your SERVICE!!!!!
I can't handle being ignored!
We went for happy hour and no one ever came to take our order.
We were going to order food and drinks and possible stay for dinner but after we were seated and told someone would come take our order... no one came. No one even walked by.
I had to go in to order my drinks and shuttle them out to our table. Finally we flagged down a bus boy for chips. The manager came by and asked us if anyone one had come to help us. We said no. She said she would send somene. 1 hour later no one ever came. The only reason we got drinks is because we got them ourselves from the bar.
The 3 stars are for location, happy hour, environment... and nothing else.
:(
On a positive note had their service been better we would have stayed for dinner and never discovered Harvest Moon... Deliciously wonderful Harvest Moon.
One of my favorite restaurants! I am such a regular at this place, they remember my boyfriend and I every time. The service is always outstanding, they go out of the way to make sure you have a wonderful meal.
We always have a hard time not filling up on the chips & salsa (so good!). But we always save room for our (giant) burritos. This place is priced really well.
A few weeks ago we came in and they surprised us with a free dessert!
Definitely give this place a try. You won't regret it!
Some of the best service I had ever at a restaurant! The wait staff were incredibly attentive to giving us the complimentary chips & salsa, refiling drinks, and clearing the table.
By no fault of the wait staff, the food here felt and tasted maybe somewhere between a notch below and a notch at a typical Chevy's level.
I had chili verde platter, my mom had a super burrito, my dad had fish tacos, and a family friend had a carne asada platter. We made sure to get a wide variety.
I think everybody was slightly disappointed, but it wasn't as bad as some other reviewers have said. It's just really pretty typical place.
My dad's fish tacos were probably the best and my mom's super burrito was the worst of all of what we ordered. I felt my dish was a 3/5.
i feel kind of bad being so critical about the food because the service was definitely above exceptional. I really like the wait staff here!
If you're coming here for some appetizers and drinks, it's probably a 5/5 experience! A full on meal... I'd probably say try elsewhere.
Great atmosphere, if you can get a seat on th back patio and watch the tourist walk by, oh wait that's you! Â Please tell me something you just learned about wine, PLEASE!
Chips and salsa are very good, I usually eat to many of them. Â Over the last few years I have tried many dishes on the menu and like all of them, you really can't go wrong. Â If you sit inside the atmosphere is very authentic Sonoma, just look at the building you are in. Â The crispy tacos are very good, beans and rice boarder on great. Â Great place to take the kids, or watch a game.
TV's in the bar and the two big side rooms.
Things to like: good chips and spicy salsa, good service, fresh ingredients, decent prices, clean restaurant.
Things not to like: the food.
The food was flavorless, run-of-the-mill "american" mexican food. Â The beans and rice - meh; the meats - stringy and meh; the sauces - meh and meh. Â It isn't that the food is inedible, it's just not really worth eating except to stop a gnawing hunger. Â Very nice, friendly folks running the place, but they need someone in the kitchen that knows how to put flavor into the food.
This was my favorite watering hole 30 years ago. Â When we moved back to town, this was the first place we went. Â Much to our delight, it was exactly the same. Â The pictures on the wall had changed (where'd Poncho Villa go?), a few mods to the menu and of course the prices are different. Â
The food and drink takes me right back to thirty years ago. Â The margs taste the same. Â The salsa exactly as it was. Â I LOVE their salsa (also available in local stores). Â The carnitas, same recipe. Â MD's new fave is the fish taco's. Â Done in two styles, he orders one of each. Â Blackened and grilled. Â He's in a rut with these, so I know they are good. Â He orders them every time.
We enjoy sitting on the back deck when the weather is nice. We also enjoy sitting up top and looking out to the Mission SF Solano during the day or in the little room off the bar at night.
I have dropped one star because this is not what you would call "stellar food" and it is in the middle of a food heaven, so it should be. Â It is a hair off the Sonoma Plaza, so in the past, it had been more of a locals place, and priced as such.
Which brings me to the loss of another star. Â For Mexican fare, this place is pricey. Â We had to cut back our visits because it was blowing the monthly dining budget. Â To help, we have started going during Happy Hour. Â Five dollar margs, $3 beers and $3 appetizers. Â This helps.
The staff is fun and festive and genuinely try to help you have a good time. Â It is still a fave for us, but we have a lot of nostalgia that carries us through what others might consider a mediocre meal.
after a day of wine-sipping and sidewalk-dancing with all the available tourists in the greater Bay area, I was feeling a little contrary when it came to choosing a place to eat. eschewing the wannabe-chic-while-posing-as-'country'-and-'Ârustic' cafes on the square, we ventured A WHOLE HALF BLOCK away and ducked into this place. I thought -- ooh! dark and dingy! it'll be a diamond in the rough! em, no. it's just.... dark and dingy.
let me just preface this by saying I did not get food poisoning, and I did not spit anything out. however the food was so unremarkable and not tasty that I don't even remember what I ate, and I wasn't even drinking.
I Â LOVE Â Sonoma !!!!!
Dosn't everyone? Â
Sonomans love Sonoma, too and apparently show it by celebrating  Friday evening with Margaritas
Not a table to be had this past Friday, inside or outside. Â But the very nice
Maitresse D'Hote found us a  table in the patio annex, an area sufficiently removed from the loud celebrants of the region to allow
conversation, AND at the same time get attention from the wait staff.
Oh, the food, you want to know about the FOOD.
BEST Mexican food in the region ( possibly., I haven't tried many)
I had Chili Relleno , cheese filled, and the surprise was it was also stuffed with Spinach. Excellent.
Also gluttony demanded I order a cheese enchilada, also excellent.,
and beans. Â The Beans were actually the Italian blonde variety, and somehow kinda fluffy. I was supposed to share the beans with my dinner companion, but ate most of them.
And yet, having eaten so much, I did not feel  as stuffed and logy as  after a meal  in many a Mexican restaurant.
Oh- my dinner companion deemed the Margareta excellent.
La Casa was an okay experience. I might go back if I was with someone who wanted to, but I would probably not choose it again. It was sort of underwhelming.
The location can't be beat, right off the plaza and plenty of parking nearby. Â The atmosphere was great. The servers were very friendly and pleasant to chat with.
My issue is with the food. There was nothing wrong with it. It was just sort of meh. Props for having tons of vegetarian options, though. As I said, I would eat here again if someone else suggested it or wanted to, but I'm not dying to go back.
OK - how is it that when you buy the La Casa chips in the store it's fresher then when you eat them at the restaurant???? Â That makes NO sense to me.
I think my love for Tacqueria Hacienda is no secret, however, we LOVE the chips from La Casa so decided we would eat at the restaurant.
I give it a resounding "EH". The chips were somewhat stale, and the salsa was totally boring.
The food was okay, the margaritas were okay, the service was pretty good.
Although, if they had fresh chips, I would TOTALLY go for happy hour. (hint, hint)
Decor nice, place is clean. Â Staff friendly - but our waiter was really pushing us to order from the bar and appetizers before we could even look at the menu. Â The guac wasn't bad, but it wasn't good either. Â The chips were greasy - wipe your fingers each time you picked one up greasy. Â The flavors in the ranchero sauce chicken special, the whole beans, the tacos, the refried beans and the table top salsa all were incredibly bland. Â The ranchero sauce chicken special was also lying in a puddle of red grease. Â The corn tortilas served with the special were microwaved so they stuck together. Â Lunch for 2 each with margarita and a small bowl of guacamole was $65. Â
Sorry to say - Something has changed dramatically since the enthusiastic reviews of 2009.
The goods:
-Probably the cheapest place you'll find in dt Sonoma.
-They were able to accommodate a party of 15 of us really well.
-Salsa is awesome! I usually steer clear but I at so many chips and salsa cuz it was so damn good! (highlight)
-Gringos favorites: a place on the menu just wor the blancos: I actually had a bur get and it was awesome. Menu said it was served with pickle and it wasn't. Asked server, she didn't even know that they had them!
The could be betters:
However, the tacos do not beat those that cost $1.35 at Mi Pueblo grocery (south bay) and thus, are not worth the $9+ for two.
-The bussers might not speak English, speak to a server if you have a specific request.
-Fried ice cream was covered in carmel and lacked the expected mix of textures
-Brownie sundae...dried out. Much better at elephant bar
I used to be a regular at the old La Casa but stopped after they changed the menu. Â Recently, I started going back and now I really enjoy their fish tacos. Â I think they are getting better with handling their menu so I'm interested in exploring more options
I was there last night for drinks, chips and salsa for a Tweetup. Â The margarita was strong and a little salty but good. Â The chips were fresh and tasty and I thought the salsa was quite good. Â Solid.
One disappointment, which is minor, is that there is no wifi and the cellular reception was weak so it's not a great location for having a business meeting if you might need to access the internet.
This is what I've got to say about "The House"
o  Wonderful outdoor patio dining
o  Quite tasty chips-n-salsa (specially the chile sauce, on request)
o  Very yummy Chicken Taquito and Taco
o  YUM bean cheese fundido dip (or somethin' like that)
o  Ohhh so super tasty Fried Ice Cream Caramel dessert...bien, bien!
Not so tasty...service, guac, and rice/beans.
Pretty much borderline 2.5 stars. Since everyone enjoyed the day in Sonoma, I'm going to generously go with 3 stars.
Pros: chips were light and tasty, salsa was just spicy enough. The carna asada was a little overdone but very good flavor. The shredded chicken in my taco and enchilada was ok. The place was roomy and clean.
Cons: Mixed up several items on our orders (ex. my wife ordered white beans but got refried, another friend ordered a beef taco but got chicken, another ask for a refill of root beer and got pepsi) but wasn't a big deal so we still ate it. Service seems slow - I love restaurants that refill my water before me having to ask, and here I asked several times.
Overall the food was ok, everything else was a little bit less, so there's my vote.
I attended a rehearsal dinner here and maybe that puts the restaurant at an unfair advantage. Â But the service was SLOW, it took hours to get everyone food in front of them. Â Pitchers ran empty and were only refilled when asked. Â Appetizers (chips and quacamole) ran empty and only replaced when asked too. Â When the dinner arrived (fajitas) it lacked any excitement. Â It also lacked shredded cheese??? Â Whats up with that?!
It's in a cool neighborhood and had a quaint courtyard. Â But I wouldn't be in a hurry to go for dinner based on this experience.
I heart Mexican food. Unfortch, La Casa didn't impress me much.
Great ambiance, service was great, the food was...eh.
I ordered the flauta/taquito combo - nothing to write home about. The black beans were about the best thing on the plate. The rice was sprinkled with vinegar - at first I thought it might be the salad dressing, but the rice was flat out vinegar-ed.
The kids quesadilla was extremely greasy and I cringed as my toddler gobbled it up.
My husband had the prawn fajitas and I suppose they were okay - he seemed pretty satisfied.
I think that we would've been better off cooking dinner at home.
I'm writing after taking an antacid. Â We went today, New Year's Day. Â In all fairness, it seemed that they were understaffed. Â But it took forever to get our food, the bill, etc. Â I ordered beef fajitas, and was expecting grilled beef. Â Instead, it came in the form of an oily stew, with celery and broccoli and other veggies. Â My husband ordered the chicken mole, and the sauce had a good flavor, but when put on top of a flavorless chicken breast, well, there is no sauce that can save that.
I doubt I'll ever come here again. Â When the best things are the margaritas and the chips, it is time to change locales.
I was digging through my kitchen cupboards the other day and a can of deviled ham which expired a couple years ago rolled out. The little can of ham triggered a memory that was tucked away in the back of my mind -- a trip to Sonoma.
I was up in Sonoma for work a year or so ago. I had to make a presentation. Normally when I'm up in Sonoma, I stop by the Sonoma Jack Cheese Factory for a burger, but that time, I decided to have some Mexican food.
I had an hour before I was due to make the presentation. It was around 1pm. My coworker and I were seated immediately since the restaurant was pretty empty. I ordered a taco salad. We waited an eternity when the food finally came out. My stomach was GROWLING.
When my salad finally came, I wolfed down a couple bites. Not quite what I expected. I ordered the beef salad, and the "beef" was sitting at the bottom. I ate it. It didn't quite taste like "beef" though, but had a very recognizable taste to it. I couldn't figure out what it was.
It's about 3:00pm. I was sitting in the conference room. I was finished with my portion of the presentation. My co-worker was rambling on about how the "new website will be a great marketing tool...blah blah blah" when all of a sudden, a light bulb went on in my head. The familiar taste of "beef" I had for lunch was deviled ham.
I've always liked this place but yesterday our server was such a huge bitch. Â She clearly wasn't in the mood to deal with our shit. Â Minus 2 stars for that! Â The chips were light and crispy and the salsa was great this time - it seemed a lot fresher than I remember it being. Â Great mexican food but not enough carnitas (pork) options. Â The black bean soup was great too. Â The Margharitas are AWESOME! Â We'll take another pitcher por favor!
P.S. Â Went back and got the same waitress with the same attitude. Â This time, the food was pretty awful. Â This ship is sinking fast.
Laptop in bar area no good during World Cup...
...unless you want margarita splashed across it (free wireless in the lounge and bar). Not necessarily the best Mexican food in the area, but the nicest wait staff and beautiful interior with a space that seems more authentic than the old mission across the street make for a great lounging spot. Walking distance to a couple of nearby wineries make it a great meeting point.
