The bar area seemed fairly lively. The food was scary. Our barely re-heated side dishes of refried beans seemed rotten, they were maybe left out or mixed with rotten lard. nasty. The rest of the food seemed OK but the night was ruined for us. beans come with everything at a mexican place. This is 1 of only a few places my girlfriend refuses to go back to.
Review Source:La Chiquitas is not about fine food and fancy decor. It has a strong clientele that returns for decent mexican food, good drinks and good friends. The owners are some of the nicest people you will ever meet.
Musicians come here to play and eat and drink and then watch their friends play. Almost all are amateurs, but talanted none the less. Â It is a great time for all. It seems like jam sessions. Like they use this place as a practice field before the big game. Even if you are just grabbing a drink with a friend if you know what to expect, it's a blast.
The decor is entertaining in my book. It is painfully out of date, and seems to be screaming "we don't care about what this place looks like". But I love that about it. Come with an open mind and some good friends, and you will have a lot of fun. In fact, bring your guitar and a little courage. It's a friendly crowd.
I agree with Kelly A wholeheartedly. Â This place has issues, yet I would probably go back.... =) Â I liked the Frankenstein decor because it reminds me of old mom and pop restaurants from my college days in TX. But romantic, it is not. Â
Our food (queso fundido, carnitas, grab bag/combo plate) was OK and got the job done, but def. fell on the side of "well-meaning Tex-Mex" rather than "comida authentica" and it was damn salty. Â However, my frozen margarita was tasty and cost a mere 3.25. Also, they had a decent covered porch and a dedicated Smoker's Area and I like how they include cheeseburger on their "Light Menu."
I would probably go back and stick to apps and drinks only. But, I have to admit that I really liked their rice and bean and I could probably go and have margs, rice and beans and be all set. Also, I am intrigued by their "Whatever Wednesday" entertainment lineup, so I might need to check that out...
Unlike the first posting, I enjoy traditional mexican food. Acapulcos is very satisfactory if you like tex-mex, but La Chaquitas has authentic cooking, ingredients, and the best tequila bar around. The decor is eclectic to say the least but you're not going there for the ambiance, you're going to go there for the great food. Who cares what else they are promoting as long as the food speaks for itself. Freshly made salsas, with different heats, handmade tortillas, not packaged, fresh herbs and real mexican cheeses (not pepper jack cheese like some "mexican" chains offer.)
Eat on the restaurant side, it's quiet .No Keno distractions or bar noise.
If you want a packaged tex-mex experience, by all means, go to Acapulco in Amesbury.
Meh, We have experienced better.
MUCH Better.
Dennis and I pasted this hidden "Mexican" cantina a few months back when coming back from the Sailsbury Beach.
We stopped in and it took in dinner and drinks and the tired mixed up atmosphere.
Whomever decorated, they must have been on drunk or had ADHD.
It is like 10 different styles all mixed together and none of them finished or  even completed.
Example:
1. Cutsie fake kerosene oil lamps from the Christmas tree shop , not even plugged in and still had the tags on the lamp.
2. Its May and there are fake Christmas flowers in the flower boxes at some tables. Other holiday flowers at other tables.
3. Peeling paint, unfinished trim, and drywall. Come on people.
There was a band setting up. For over 1 hour they did sound checks, and when were were ready to leave, they burst into screeching song.
The food: Much, much to be desired for Mexican. Stale chips, watery and acidic salsa. Yuck. I could not even finish my Margaretta.
Nothing was fresh or authentic.
It appears as they focus more on Keno and lotto and alcohol sales than the food.
My advice: Skip this place and head to Acapulco's up the road off 495 for some decent food and atmosphere.
