Usually, I've had good experiences here. The bartenders do get chummy with their regulars (which I'm not) and if you sit at the bar expect to wait a while to get noticed - this recent time I waited 15 minutes to even order while the regulars got refills. No apology when I mentioned it to the head bartender. Draft list is great and food is solid. Some advice is to be nice and attentive to everyone if you want repeat business. Â If you watch Bar Rescue, you'll know that the best tippers are men eating alone. Â They're also a source of repeat business.
Review Source:Group of ladies went here for dinner, drinks and chat. Â We made a reservation for 6pm. Â It was a Tuesday night, and from the looks of things no reservation was needed on this night. Â Pretty much empty inside, few more people were outside. Â It wasn't a bad thing because we didn't feel bad for hogging a table ;-) Â Their special this night was shrimp and ff for 7.95, most of the table chose this. Â One steak sandwich was ordered and from what I saw it was a big one! Â They ate it all, I'd say that was good! Â I got a personal gourmet pizza "white" Â it was the best "different" pizza I had. Â Soooooo delish! Â The atmosphere seems like it would be a fun time for a group. Â I guess it was open mike night, the only suggestion I would have is to have someone there at least performing in between or in case there is no one who is going to have enough liquid singing lessons to get up there. Â Maybe it was to early to start it was 8:45 when we left and no one was up there. Â All in all I'd say I really like this place. Â I'm sure it's a young party scene crowd after 9.
Review Source:I've never tried the food here so I can't give it 5 stars but the beer selection is phenomenal for a place in the Reading area.
I was impressed by the dogfish head 120 minute soaked in oak chips, 18% abv... I didn't even try it, just impressed that Liberty was on that level.
I live out of town now, so I haven't been here often but I know they have a good takeout section too.
I think they're "loyalty" program with the silver mugs might be a bit far fetched. You'd have to spend 500 dollars just to get 1 dollar off per beer, but hey, what do I know?
Just keep serving up the delicious craft selections. There was a band playing here during my visit. Live music is always cool.
As I wander across the country seeking out great beer spots my Yelp Mobile App has struck gold once again. Â Well maybe not gold but at least great golden beer! Â These folks have 32 drafts and a very impressive list of 450 bottles. Â I've visited plenty of places with more taps but rarely have I experienced this many bottles. Â If you are a beer aficionado it's certain you will be pleased. Â Part of that pleasure will come from competent bartenders that know their beers. Â My guy was Pat and he knew his stuff. Â I had a chance to chat with my fellow bar patrons and they mentioned that other bartenders here are also very knowledgeable. Â
The bar atmosphere is more brew pub than sports bar but the eighteen TVs will likely satisfy the sports fans. Â The stools are comfortable. Â
I perused the menu and decided to go for the Stromboli. Â You can choose Pepperoni, Sausage, Ham, or all three with Green Peppers, Mushrooms, and Mozzarella. (Large $15.75, Medium $9.75, Personal $7.75) Â I was hungry so I went for a medium combo of all three. Â Silly me! Â This thing was gigantic! Â I felt like Adam on Man vs. Food. Â When it was placed in front of me I expected my fellow patrons to start chanting and cheering me on. Â It was slightly under-cooked but still very good. Â Needless to say "Food" won this day. Â No T-shirt for me!
I come from the Philly area where Yelp activity is very high. Â Many places have dozens if not hundreds of reviews. Â As I write this these folks have 15 reviews with a solid 4 star rating. Â Don't let the small number of reviews dissuade you. Â These folks deserve their four stars and are definitely worth a visit.
A friend had told us that Liberty Taproom is a good place to go for the beer selection, so we got a sitter for the kids and drove into Reading. It didn't disappoint. I really liked the atmosphere - lots of tvs to watch your favorite sports teams, the place seems clean and spacious, the bar is nice, and it feels modern yet traditional . They have a very nice outdoor patio with pretty plants - again, it's a very nice outdoor space that is clean and tidy. The beer was good. I ordered the 4 beer special where you get four 5 oz mugs of beers of your choice for $8 (but I was told there can be an upcharge for certain beers). Even my least favorite beer was good. The food was very good too. It is mostly sandwiches, wraps, wings, and pizza. I got the chicken cordon bleu wrap - very good. My husband got the pulled pork sandwich and thought it was good too. He ordered fried with his sandwich, and the waitress failed to tell him that the sandwiches come with chips already, so he got both fries and chips. Neither was ordinary. Both were delicious. I wonder if they make their own chips - really crispy and good. The fries had a good coating on them. I will definitely go back to Liberty Taproom.
Review Source:Philadelphia has Chickies and Pete's, Baltimore has the ESPN Zone, and Reading has the Liberty Taproom! Â Okay maybe not the exact same class, but it is a cool spot nonetheless. Â This is a great spot to hang out and watch a game on one of their gazillion TV's (maybe closer to 15 Tv's). Â
It doesn't have taproom in its name just for the heck of it, this place has a beast of a selection of draught beers. Â They have a beer list that changes every day, or at most every couple of days. Â The rotation is extremely fresh, and about two pages on a special beer menu that is located at every table. Â If you don't care for a draught beer then check out the bottle options (you can view it online, and there must be over 100 beers to choose from). Â So I hope I got my point across to you - this place is a must for any beer lover. Â By the way, if you really enjoyed a beer here, after your dinner you can go to their takeout room and get a 6 pack of that beer to go, this is fabulous and more places should have something like this. Â
As far as the food goes, this place is good on that too! Â The menu is a large bar type of food variety, and the food ranges from pizza and wings to tacos. Â They have really good cheese fries, and speaking of the fries they are the crispier kind. Â The personal pizzas are really good, the crust is a light but crispy. Â Pizza is one of my favorite menu items that they offer. Â There have been times however that there were small inconsistencies in the food or the service, but this place gets packed, and I mean packed! Â The happy hour crowd will merge and blend into the late night crowd, and it can be tough to grab a table, let alone a waiter or a waitress that is attentive to your needs. Â However this is not a fine dining spot, so I give them a bit of a pass. Â
In the spring and fall it is nice to sit out on their patio, and this might be the other spot that they can improve upon. Â They have a damaged part of the patio, and it is very noticeable (part of a retaining wall is collapsing), I would hope that they have plans to fix it soon. Â They also have live bands or DJs that will perform from time to time, so if you get there late be prepared to have a loud atmosphere. Â It is overall a great gem in Reading, and shouldn't be overlooked!
Great beer selection, menu seems to have been expanded a bit since we were last here. Â Food really not that fabulous, but not bad either, and prices are pretty reasonable compared to other locations. Â Great bar, lots of TV screens, music a little loud, service was good. Â They tried to sell us on their beer take out sales room, we didn't bite on that. Â Not bad, we'll be back.
Review Source:Basically bar food with extensive beer selection, including a few hard ciders. My son says they have the best wings around. I haven't been disappointed with their food, but neither am I amazed. The service is not particularly quick, but the servers we've had have been pleasant. On a nice evening it's a great place to sit oustide and enjoy a beer.
Review Source:At 9 PM on a Saturday night, the bar is packed three deep with twentysomethings waiting their turn. There's not an empty table in the joint and a DJ is playing... dance music? It all says they must be doing something right.
With an advertised selection of 300 bottled beers available, the Liberty Taproom is a great place to go if you're a beer geek or if you have a friend who is a beer geek. It's also not a bad place to hang out if you don't mind crowds and noise. Yes, it was very loud in there on Saturday night. I'm going to guess it's a bit more peaceful on a weeknight.
I do take some issue with them being listed as a gastropub. I'm my mind, a gastropub would offer a finer level of food. The menu is fairly large, but mostly bar food; burgers wings, pizzas, etc. Â Nothing I could see that looked very special. If the Liberty Taproom is a gastropub, then Applebees must be one too.
We ordered buffalo wings and quesadillas. Both were fine, but nothing to write home about. Despite the crowd, the service was very good.
All in all, I'm glad to see a new local business that is experiencing success. I'll probably go back, but maybe on a quieter night.
I was here during the holidays with friends , beer beer and more beer, i had a flight which ranged from bitter to sweet and a few pints, the food is solid i had the beef po boy really good we all shared a few appetizers. but how much beer can one drink in a night ...so we went back again , busy, the feeling is electric and the staff knew there beer and awesomely friendly.

Atmosphere **
The restaurant formerly known as Chat-A-While Inn may have had the kitschiest name in town but I could never understand why my friends would regularly flock here on special occasions.
I'm not much of a beer drinker but I was stoked to hear about this place offering an unusual selection of libations since we are often looking for interesting places to take our friends who are visiting from out of town.
Do you know where your beer comes from or what it is made of? Isinglass, gelatin, honey... other animal by-products?
A complete re-working of the layout replaces the old octagonal-shaped bar with a larger, more modern taproom along with several televisions and loud music making it difficult to hold a conversation. It is, however, a place for authentic Berks Countians where beer could be k i n g; there's nothing quite like this except maybe Canal St., or Mike's in the city. We shared one small flight which consisted of Troegs Mad Elf 2011, Sam Adams Chocolate Bock, Le Chouffe and Stone Levitation Ale. Not your usual bill of fare around here, so they've got that going for them.
Eat before you go; the food is disappointing at best unless you like deep fried bread, boring nachos or chicken fingers. Even Dee, who often enjoys the escape of my protective whole food precepts couldn't find one thing on the menu for us to order.
They were very busy, but service was fairly good. Beer was good, and food was good. I got the muffelata sandwich, and my boyfriend got the 1/2 lb burger. My sandwich was good, but nothing to write home about. BF's burger was tasty, but slightly overcooked. The wings were excellent. Next time we are getting wings and the muhlenboner, which looks good. Definitely worth it if you're a beer fan.
Review Source:Liberty tap room, you had me from "dozens of beers on tap." Â
Hearing from my relatives about this palace for beer aficionados I somehow expected it to have a "snobby sports bar / nightclub" vibe, but the decor seems to be a reboot of whatever modest restaurant or bar previously occupied the building. Â Which is good, because it means they probably didn't go (as) broke opening the place and they'll give you a four beer tasting flight for $8. Â "beer tasting flight." Â (Wine tasting for men?)
Came here with my cousin and got these four:
- Anchor steam summer ale - a pleasant surprise, this went down super easy kind of like Kirin or Singha, and might even make you feel hydrated on a warm day.
- Mojo IPA: a nicely balanced brew, didn't leave too strong of an impression though because I also had:
- Blue Moon Pumpkin, which was a fairly subtle flavoring of the mass market craftbrew, and:
- Devious Imperial Pumpkin, which I would call a totally non-subtle pumpkin cider claiming to be beer... and I loved it, at least in a 4 oz portion. Â Not sure if I could handle a pint of it, but man was it flavorful and spicy.
Service was especially attentive and friendly (and attractive? can I say that?) probably because we were the only people there at 4pm on a Friday. Â Our server seemed to know quite a bit about the beers on offer. Â
Oh, right, we got two or three appetizers to accompany the beer and now in total violation of writing style guidelines I'll abruptly segue to what I remember of them. Â They were all especially warm and fresh (jalapeno poppers nicely fried), and the "not knots" which came drizzled in just enough garlic and oil were fairly awesome, a bit like a doughier version of Auntie Anne's pretzels. Â Â Cheap too.
I think they had some decent TVs going too... Â I'd say this place is something like heaven for a beer and sports lover who could eat hot fresh apps all day. Â Do it.
This is based on four visits (two happy hour, one dinner, and one late-night). The atmosphere here is more sports bar than anything else.
The beer: Excellent selection! Lots of taps, lots of rotation, variation, and a good bottle and takeout offering. It's clear to me that their buyer(s) have outstanding taste. Beer prices are on the cheap side. They list size, price, ABV, style notes, and what style of glass the beer is served in right on the menu, which is always appreciated. They run some good specials, my favorite is the $1 off drafts daily happy hour. You can get a seat at the bar if you come towards the beginning of happy hour, but it fills up around 6 and later. They have lots of TVs to watch the Phils on (even in the side dining room). My late night experience here: there was a DJ, which was only okay because it wasn't entirely too loud. It seems as though the late night crowd here doesn't really "get it." There aren't enough parking spaces, but I suspect that will change. Recently, I asked the bartender if they did half pints (you know, those glasses often used for flights), and she seemed puzzled but said yes. I asked for a half pint of Southern Tier Creme Brûlée Stout. She then filled a pint glass halfway, but charged me full price, $6. I will also note that the bar-to-stool ratio is a little uncomfortable--not sure if the bar is too high or the stools are too low.
The food: Not quite a "gastropub" menu, I suppose. I could be spoiled from dining at too many gastropubs in the city. The pierogies were a good price and very delicious! A dipping sauce would be fun but not entirely necessary. $9 for a singular fish taco (what kind of fish?) when the menu says "fish tacos" was only a little disheartening, as it was tasty. Anything that comes with sour cream has my heart. It seems like some menu items are a good value while others are not. The food quality and presentation is average overall. The other members in my party were: 2 satisfied, and 1 delighted. Our server was friendly and helpful. I might return for the food, although I feel like I'll most often come for appetizers and beer here.
I left a couple things out of this review out of the kindness of my heart - and also for fear that I was being nit-picky. Expect a review update soon.
This will be my new pre football wing and beer bar. The place has insane amounts of beer on tap and many more bottles to choose from. The food was excellent. We are going back asap!
Also need to try the MuhlenBoner!
If they get NFL Sunday ticket I may bring my recliner with every Sunday.
Best craft beer selection in Reading by a decent margin, with knowledgeable staff and reasonable prices. They turnover taps quickly so far, so a beer there one day will not necessarily be there the next. Happy hour from 5-7 makes beers an excellent value.
There are a number of TVs for those interested in watching sports, and the patio is scheduled to open early July 2011, which will make for a very lovely location. Food is above-average bar fare and has plenty of good options.
It took over a local landmark of Nick's Chat-a-while, and seems to understand that there is a devoted existing clientele, so there is plenty of restaurant-style seating in addition to the bar area.
All in all, a huge addition to Reading's craft beer scene and the Exeter/St. Lawrence area in general.
