I really want to like Magnolia Foods.  It's one of the few casual gourmet places in an small  town filled with disappointing chain joints.  It's a quaint mix of small specialty store (wines, cheeses, foods, and knickknacks) and deli with cafe tables.  The ladies working there are very friendly and truly care about their customers.  Alas...
My first to-go bag lunch (e.g., with one side and dessert) was a $7.45 Turkey, Apple, & Cheddar Sandwich. Â The first impression was the color, consisted of muted browns rather than brighter colors. Â The Turkey, Apple, & Cheddar Sandwich was pretty simple - turkey, thin green apple, spicy mustard, cheddar on bread - something that could be made at home. Â The Spicy Sesame Noodles had a little too much spicy peanut sauce, and reminded me of to thick sauce clinging to the pasta rather than a light salad dressing. Â The Cappuccino Brownie caught my eye as a dessert, but it reminded me of rich fudge with a taste of cappuccino taste rather a strong coffee flavor.
My second to-go bag lunch was a $6.85 Hummus Wrap with Potato Salad and Cappuccino Brownie. Â The wrap reminded me of a crepe, consisting of a flat, limp tortilla rather than an round, stuffed wrap. Â The cucumber and tomato was freshly cut, but I think it could have used a little bit more. Â The Potato Salad was better with skinned red potatoes and a good balance of mayo.
I really want to like Magnolia Foods, but, alas the ordinary food does not live up to the gourmet prices.
Oh, how I love Magnolia Foods.
I mean, hello: the Turkey, Apple, and Cheddar Sandwich? Can I get an amen?
Also, the chocolate cupcake with peanut butter frosting -- I might swoon.
I love that you can get stuff to take home for dinner - they have a nice prepared foods selection. And before I moved to Lynchburg, I would go to Magnolia Foods to pick up little gifts to bring back for my friends -- they have a pretty decent selection of non-perishable gourmet speciality foods that make for nice little treats to take back to friends and family.
Now that I live here, however, I can just bliss out on those Turkey, Apple, and Cheddar sandwiches. I don't even like sandwiches much, but those things make me a believer.
I prefer giving my  money to local businesses whenever possible, but I won't sacrifice quality to do so.  That, however, is never a concern at Magnolia's. They have a consistently appetizing selection of amazing food that is reasonably priced. I frequently order take-out for a last-minute dinner, but the atmosphere is great for dining in, as well. They offer a selection of wines and other local fare. My only disappointment are their hours of operation (they always seem to close a bit early), but that is hardly enough of a detractor to turn you away from Magnolia Foods. Bon Appetite!
Review Source:This is, by far, one of the best spots in Lynchburg. Â The food is of the highest quality, and the selection is always interesting and very fresh. Â The set up is reminiscent of a trendy Connecticut cafe. Â Ms. Martha Stewart would definitely approve of the spot.
If you are in Lynchburg, do go by and try the quiche. Â It is cheap, and one of the most delicious things I have eaten.
And, not to be forgotten, the cupcakes are really yummy. I tried the almond cupcake, and it rivals any trendy NYC cupcake.
Go check this one out!
As the rating indicates, I am a fan of Magnolia. Â Its local and owner-operated, has a decent wine selection, a great deli and interesting odds and ends. Â The sandwiches are delicious and original - probably the best in Lynchburg. Â Dinner leaves something to be desired as the dishes tend to be very heavy.
Review Source:A great little business, and it's nice to have small businesses in the area! Â Clean, friendly shop. Â The gifts-and-goodies section is perfect to get a hostess gift, they have a lot of nice things. Â Very cute.
Also a good place to go if you're looking for a specialty cheese.
The deli area is what stopped this from being a 5-star. Â Don't get me wrong, the food is delicious and quick service, but is very very over priced.
Cupcakes!!!!
This place has amazing cupcakes! The other entrees are very good as well, but we will drive all the way down here after lunch just for cupcakes. We have even called ahead to reserve cupcakes on the way due to the fact that they will often run out on the weekends.
They also have a nice little patio area where you can sit and watch the healthy people run by while you are enjoying your beautiful, calorie filled, sugary, non-splittable due to greed, piece of heaven.
The little store area is nice as well, but why would you buy that stuff when you could use your money on more cupcakes? Unless you are buying wine, that would be the only pardonable sin.
Nom nom nom nom...
They have tables and great place, as someone said very well, to bring your mother to lunch. That being said, I have never stayed to eat for lunch. Like most places in this area, it is a bit pricey, but gourmet and worth it if you have the coin.
I prefer to go here for take out orders or small contains of their high-end food.
Their bloody mary mix is superb.
First time visiting Magnolia Foods today. Â This has to be the perfect place to take your mother to lunch -- very charming, very clean, and complete with specialty items you can purchase as gifts. Â I had the Brunswick Stew lunch special and was very pleased. Â The chocolate bread pudding was very fine -- rich, chocolatey, but not decadent or cloying. Â I look forward to exploring other items on the menu, but don't love their prices. Â Twenty-percent less would have been about right.
Review Source:The chicken salad is really good. Can be a bit confusing when crowded. Hard to tell who's in line and who's waiting for food. It would be easier if they delivered the food to the tables (and there aren't enough). Kind of snobby staff but what else can you expect in that location? Cakes are frozen.
Review Source:It's hard to go out to eat all the time and get healthy food... ESPECIALLY at lunch. Most of the time your choice is subway or subway. Tasty. Great value. The boxed lunches were great for when we ordered in for our office. Only person who was disappointed got the olive and cream cheese. They thought it was bland....but it was exactly what the menue said it would be.
Review Source:Magnolia Foods does a wonderful job at providing the Rivermont/Boonesboro area with a little european flavor. It is one of my favorite places to grab a sandwich when I am in the area. When I lived in the area, I often ran to Magnolia to buy dinner. As Rivermont is one of my old stomping grounds, I always see someone I know in the store. The food is great but I also love the atmosphere and the gourmet foods. The owner has a great eye for buying, if nothing else it is great to look around. The store is first class all the way. Don't forget to order a specialty cake from them. They do an excellent job...it's not cheap but look people, you get what you pay for, don't forget that. If you want quality, flavor and a beautiful product, pay the money and order your cake from them.
My favorites? Their lemon pound cake, pink cupcakes, their orzo salad when they have it and most of all, the quiche!
