Great food and pleasant take out service. I ordered the stew oxtails, peas n rice, plantains and potatoe salad. I was sad they didnt have my milk cake but next time hopefully :)
Everyone there was very nice and genuine. I look forward to eating here again. When I got home and dove into my food it was non stop pure pleasure that reminded me of how much I miss my grannies (Ma) cookin. All I needed was some good ol Johnny cake to complete my meal. I can skip the plantains, they were a lil over ripe for my tasting but I can make those at home in no time so no points takin away there.
I'd give them a 5 star but I havent finished trying their other dishes yet. I love the fact that they have my Marie Sharps habanero hot sauce there to give my food that extra belizean kick.
My next try is their curry n hopefully they have the good ol curry goat.
This review is for food and service. Note that this is a mom and pop establishment, so it's not in the best location. If you want to go to somewhere foofoo with mediocre food, go to Kincaid's in Redondo Beach.
I have to say, I am really impressed with the food and hospitality. The food came out a little slow but hey, what's the hurry? It's island time, although Belize is not an island. It's on the coast, close enough ;)
Everything we ordered was good. Stew chicken, stew beef, curry chicken, fish balls, ox tail and tamales. They even gave us samples of their home made ice cream. Soursop, sweet creamed corn and coconut. They were all yummy!
The owners were so nice. Answered all our Belizean questions and even put in a DVD of Belize history for us to watch. Â Can't wait to visit Belize!
FYI - Weekend specials are served on Friday. I wish I knew this so we could have tried the conch soup. I guess I'll have to go back another time to try this.
Yummmmmm! Me and my buddy ate here today, it was late afternoon and only a few people were there. We both had Ox tails and rice and beans with potato salad. The price was fair and the portions were plenty. we took homes a few tamales for later and I ate they were the BOMB! Service was attentive and the male owner was funny and very welcoming, They played traditional Caribbean music a song called "Hey Where's my Goat" had us cracking up. Â We will come back, very nice place.
Review Source:The food was ok. What made the experience bad was the attitude of the owner or manager not wanting to agree to the yelp deal by not agreeing I mean complaining that your not making any money off of this order which is very unprofessional. Why offer or create something to get people to come to your business and then complain. I suggest in the future only offer what's beneficial which will create an enjoyable experience for everyone.
Review Source:My girlfriend is Belizean and is always on the hunt for authentic Belizean food close to home (we live in Redondo Beach). Â Otherwise she has to travel deeper into South L.A., which has a pretty big Belizean population, which I was not aware of.
Anyway, a lot of her friends and family told her that this place was pretty good so we tried it today. Â She had the oxtails and I had the jerk chicken. Â She seemed to really enjoy her food.
I have never had jerk chicken and have always wanted to try it. I don't know if they way they prepare it here is authentic or not, but I would disagree with the gentleman who stated that it is similar to BBQ chicken. Â You can tell they put some love into the dish, it isn't just generic BBQ sauce and some spice on top of the chicken. Â The chicken is slow cooked and falls right of the bone, with a lot of spice. Â The plantains are prepared nicely, not too oily as I have experienced at other places. Â Â The only complaint I had was that my serving of chicken was on the small side. Â One leg and one wing. The leg was meaty but I guess I would have preferred a breast.
Overall, I would suggest you try this place. Â The ambiance is different...very dimly lit but the staff is very friendly. Â It is differently a mom and pop operation so service seemed a bit slow but hey sometimes that is a good thing.
My family and I love this place. Â The owners are really friendly. Â We always get the oxtail and absolutely love it. Â Nice vibe but the music was alittle too loud for us; there may have been 2 other couples in the place, but nevertheless we still enjoyed the food and atmosphere. Â We've been here a total of 3 times and always enjoy it.
Review Source:I saw a lot of good reviews, then I saw the " I'm Belizian...this not Belizian..." reviews. Â At first I was concerned it was over Americanized. Â Since I've never been to Belize I wouldn't know and I don't care. Â Basically there is some food that is Belize, then there is food more familiar as Mexican food. Â What ever "real" Belizian food is, I like this place. Â The owner/managers were really friendly too. Â Give it a try.
Review Source:The endless hidden gems in Hawthorne cease to amaze me! Thank goodness work is nearby. For people who love food, especially ethnic food, Mars Carribean is a must go!
A group of us from work went there for lunch today and we were all extremely surprise and happy with all of our dishes.
I had the stewed oxtail and cleaned every single oxtail down to the bown! If you are a fan, then this is a definite pick. succulent, tender meat, well seasoned and slowly cooked with brown gravy..served with beans and rice and plantain.. I stopped talking for a few minutes and just gave my full attention to the plate in front of me..
Others had the fried chicken, stewed chicken and sautee'd shrimp...and looking at the empty plates, I take that they really enjoyed it.
I should've made room for the coconut tart but when I got to the front they were all gone..
I'm definitely adding that to the list next time.
We came on a Saturday night and the place was dead! Yikes, we were a bit worried, but once we got the food, it was like heaven.
We had a big group so I got to try pretty much everything on the menu, and everything was delicious:
Garnaches
Salbutes
Orange Walk Tacos
Tilapia
Oxtails
Curry Chicken
Stewed Beef
Garlic Shrimp
Shrimp al Diabla
Chicken Fajitas
Coconut Ice Cream
My only gripe was they were out of at least 4 different items on the menu, other than that the service was top notch and we enjoyed our adventurous dinner. Never had Caribbean food before, but now I'm a fan.
You have to get the oxtail, stewed beef, shrimp al diabla & homemade coconut ice cream, easily the best items on the menu.
Walking in, I immediately notice the charm of this place, it's comfortable & cozy with beautiful decor. Â The hostess was sweet, yet very undertrained (more on that later).
We ordered a sampler plate which came with tostada's (OK), empanada's, guarnaches. Â The tostada was good (I don't think I've ever seen tostada's on a belizean menu before), the empanada's stuffed with fish was really good and the guarnaches were outstanding. Â What really set this app plate off was the onion sauce (I've heard it called timalis at other Caribbean establishments). Â Generally, I absolutely love this sauce and their version was no exception.
I ordered the jerk chicken and I honestly didn't care for it. Â Jerk is one of my all-time favorite foods but this version actually tasted like barbeque chicken to me (sweet baby ray's w/ allspice). Â My wife loved her mojo de camerones. Â Overall I thought the food was a 3.5 but I rounded up because my wife thought her dish was a 5. Â There stew beans were OK but just that, OK.
The service:
The hostess/waitress was completely unprepared or inept. Â Although, she seemed sweet she had no idea what she was doing. Â I'm familiar with Caribbean food but there were still a couple items on the menu i was unfamiliar with; she could not help me because she had no idea what they were. Â This happened several times. Â Then when I pulled out my phone for the yelp deal she had no idea how to do this (which was surprising because every review on here says "purchased a yelp deal"). It took her 3 try's, a call to the manager and 10 minutes to figure out how to use the deal. Â I actually began to feel sorry for her because she was completely underprepared for this job. Â
Overall, food was pretty good but the service was forgettable. Â I would still encourage anyone to try them though (especially with the $20 for $40 yelp deal)
I feel bad about this one. I am Belizean so I really wanted to like this place but this definitely isn't what I want people to think of as Belizean cuisine. The menu was so scattered. For example, I like the idea of a free appetizer, chips & salsa has NOTHING to do with Belizean. I have NEVER eaten chips & salsa in Belize. Why not offer bean and cheese garnaches? They are cheap and you could even bring out a small little platter of ingredients so people could build them themselves. Nothing fancy - just the tortilla, beans, cheese, ketchup and hot sauce. My stew chicken was good, not the best but good. But the coleslaw has a strange taste to it that I did not like. I also wasn't a huge fan of the potato salad. Portion sizes were pretty good for the price but why is the actual place so small?? I do tend to be a messy eater but goodness gracious the plates were small making it difficult to eat without food spilling. The milk cake was also VERY dry like it had been there for a few days. I want to support this establishment and will go back in the future to see if any changes have been made but this place definitely needs some work before I consider it my go-to place for authentic Belizean cuisine.
Review Source:The food is always so good. Taste freshly prepared like mom's homecooking and everything is good. Ox tails are awesome...stew chicken, ducunu, oysters, rice and beans...you name it. Price is a little on the high side but its worth it for the amount and quality of food you get. Plus, the restaurant has a better ambiance than all the other Belizean restaurants I've been to in la.
Review Source:Love Love love this place. Had our xmas party here last year and they made planning so easy:) Marie and Fred were very friendly and accomodating. The food is deicious as always delicious. I especially loved the fish with the coconut sauce...Great little restuarant, great food Great people..good times
Review Source:YUM! We tried this place out because of the Yelp deal, but we will definitely be back. Their meat pies are little pastry pockets of heaven. They are surely not health food, but they are worth every calorie. We will definitely be taking home some extras next time we're there. The oxtails were rich and fatty, smothered in brown gravy like oxtails should be (in my opinion). I was ridiculously excited that they served Marie Sharp's hot sauce. Caribbean food DESERVES Marie Sharp's. I seriously thought of stuffing the bottle in my purse, but I didn't for fear of being banned from Mars and forever missing their delightful little meat pies ;P
What I DIDN'T love about Mars: we went late on a Friday night, and I guess it turns into a dancehall on the weekend nights. They were playing awesome music--reggae and dancehall, but the DJ started his soundcheck around 9:45-10pm and it was WAYYYYY too loud. He kept turning it up, then turning it down. It would be at a good volume for a few minutes, then he would crank it way up. OUCH! So either bring ear protection or don't come in too late if painfully LOUD music bothers you.
First off, I didn't go to Mars Caribean because of yelp. Â I went to yelp because of Mars Caribean. Â I was going to go to Mars for my dinner regardless. Â I went to Yelp to see if they had any deals for Mars and there was. Â There was a great deal $20 gets you $40 worth of food. Â My lucky day....
I would definitely recommend Mars Caribean. Â My auntie Esmin would make oxtails and rice and peas at least once a month for me. Â So Mars takes me back to a time where I would look forward to my Sunday visits to my aunt's house. Â Going Mars Caribean let's me make that visit any day I want. Â Making any day my lucky day.
After following this restaurant on Facebook for about 6 months, I finally made it in to order some chicken stew to go last week. What a cute place! When the waitress heard that it was my first visit, she served me one of their delicious coconut tarts. I had one bite then brought it home to have after dinner.
The stew was really delicious! We were very happy. I ordered the mixed rice and beans and the cabbage with lemon (not the coleslaw) to go with the chicken stew. The coconut tart is great -- not overly sweet.
We got another take out order a couple of days later, and had a Panamanian friend join us. We got more chicken stew, plus an order of shrimp. MMMM! The shrimp was great and the white rice that comes with is it really really good. Our friend says the food is very good and very authentic.
Can't wait to try more dishes. I would LOVE to have a party there, in the private room or even in the main dining room. It's a very pretty place. Great surprise, great score!
After hearing a lot of good things about this Fairly new restaurant in the Belizean community, i decided to finally try this place and I LOVED it!! The atmosphere is very much Caribbean like and cozy and as soon as i walked in i was greeted by the very friendly staff. They had almost Everything on the menu from meat pies, salbutes, orange walk tacos, oxtails, curry shrimp, split peas and pigtails, cowfoot soup, conch soup, stew chicken, I mean everything! Â I ordered the orange walk tacos, stew chicken, white rice, stew beans, potato salad, my friend had Split Peas, white rice with Pigtails and potato salad and my sister had the chicken tamales and the sampler plate. The food was very Delicious and the portions were very much generous. It reminded us so much of the food we grew up eating Back home. I highly recommend this place! This is the first Belizean restaurant in LA that i can actually feel proud of and take my American friends to and introduce them to Belizean food. I will Definitely be back!
Review Source:NEVER AGAIN. Â I never had Belizean food but I have had Mexican food. Â This seems more like a mix of Mexican food with a few Belizean food. Â I eat out a lot and have always driven past this place planning for the perfect time to go. Â So when I seen the Groupon online I knew I had my chance.
Atmosphere: Â tropical cute and cozy, besides me and my family (2 adults and 2 children) there was only 2 other tables filled.
Staff: Â friendly
Service: Â could have been better since there was only 3 tables to wait on
FOOD: complimentary chips (not hot) and salsa was average, we ordered the Sampler (terrible, dry, microwaved empanada, cold tostada), meat pies (also microwaved and cold), and they were out of conch fritters. Â I ordered the curry shrimp w/o rice (shrimp was overcooked and flavorless, curry was watery/diluted) which is surprising since it took an awful long time for it to come out. Â You would expect FRESH SHRIMP and it was NOT. Â The Belizean potato salad tasted like something I could have bought from the supermarket. Â My boyfriend ordered the oxtail w/rice and beans (big guy and always finishes his food) and he didn't want to take another bite. Â Children had pizza which like every other eatery it's microwaveable. Â On the way out my boyfriend wanted to see if their desserts would make up for their unsavory food, needless to say it didn't. Â He got 3 coconut tarts and 1 pie. Â I bit into it and spit it out. Â
I'm not a very critical person when it comes to mediocre food but if it's terrible, I will give my opinion. Â I wish I tried something besides the shrimp curry and oxtail because I would have kept coming back and telling my coworkers and neighbors (whom are also Belizean) about this place.
Highly recommended! I've had the oxtails and rice & beans twice and my meal was great both times. The lunch portions were generous (included potato salad and plantain) and the prices are reasonable. Not a crowded restaurant so your food is served in a timely manner. This restaurant is often offered on Groupon Now! $10 for $20 and is well worth it so take advantage!
Review Source:I bought the Groupon and went there. It was EMPTY and they were polite. I ordered the Ceviche, Jerk Chicken and Sweet Potato pudding. It was ALLLLLLL SOOOOOOO YUMMY! Â best flavors I've had!!! They did charge me gratuity but promptly refunded me after noticing the Groupon says gratuity not included.
Go there and try the Jerk Chicken. Although the rice and beans were not that great.
ATTENTION ATTENTION this place DOES NOT serve BELIZE FOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Why do I think I can say this?
1.I'm a first generation Belzean
2. I come from a family of cooks, all of which have been featured on Food Network for their amazing Belizean creations
3. I have been eating this cuisine since birth
4. I am always willing to help out a small business, especially when it has potential to create a positive impact on the Belizean community
I was so looking forward to eating here, heard great things. Drove 45min to eat there and I was starving. Typical Belize style restaurant, ambiance felt right at home, menu looked great, so many choices that I wanted...then my meal took a turn for the worse.
Ordered the sampler app......basically it was masa with chicken on it.
I ordered Oxtail,Stew Beans w/rice and some potato salad. What I received was an insult to Belizean beans, potato salad not made with Heinz Salad Dressing and Oxtail that were extremely dark as if they were cooked in BBQ Sauce( they also had NO FLAVOR)
My mom ordered Stew Chicken, the staple of our cuisine. It definitely was not made with Recado.
To add injury to insult, the staff kept turning the lights on and off. One minute I was eating in the dark, the next on stage at a concert. Why were they messing with the lights?????? We were the only customers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Left full plates of food on the table, brought home the oxtail though (to feed to Wesley,my dog)
If what I have said thus far isn't enough for you to decipher that this restaurant isn't authentic and tasted horrible. Please try it and tell me George Price would be proud of it.
Great ambience! Â An elegant belizean restaurant with great tasting food like this has been long overdue, however service definitely needs improvement. Â When we arrived, there was a sign that stated 'Wait to be Seated', but we stood there for almost 10 minutes and nobody came to assist us, so we seated ourselves. Â After eating, no one came to the table to give us the bill, so we went to the cash register to pay. Â At the cash register, the owner was conversing with 2 ladies and didn't attend to us until he was finished with his conversation. Â I also placed a 'to go' order for 3 desserts - when I got home I found out that they had given me the wrong order.
Review Source:I visited this restaurant for the first time after buying a Groupon now deal: $10 for $20. I have frequented Belizean spots before, so I knew exactly what I wanted: stew chicken, beans and rice, potato salad with a side of plantain ! I was greeted nicely by the staff. My order was promptly taken and I decided to eat in instead of take out. I really enjoyed this meal! The portions were generous and the atmosphere was calm and quiet. I came around 6pm and it was virtually empty. I will be back; I just bought this deal for my hubby to enjoy for lunch!
Review Source:Was kind of caught off guard.
We went on a Sunday night. There was Salsa music blasting--and I mean really blasting. It was the first time I had Belizian food. My wife ordered the Jerk chicken and I tried the Shimp Anjo (I think). The food was very tasty. We had a ceviche for an appetizer that tasted very fresh, but a bit on the spicy side. For dessert we had a homemade taro ice cream, very tasty!
Was kind of expecting some hole in the wall place; instead, we got a really colorful atmosphere with some very authentic tasting Caribbean food.
They also have a Karaoke night. We didn't try it, but we'll probably go back some time to try it out. Check out http://restaurant.com for a coupon to this place.
Couple of friends and I decided to go for a 7 mile walk and as a treat we stopped to have breakfast at Mars, the restaurant is really clean and very Caribbean which was definitely great, the service was also nice and the food was very good. The fried Jacks were my favorite very tasty and authentic according to my Belizian friend, the following week we decided to go back, we all order the same thing but it was definitely not as good as the first time, it was a bit greasy and just didn't taste the same. The funny thing is that we all got sick from eating there that day. I believe there's different cooks so it all depends on your luck!
Review Source:I eat out ALOT an use yelp all the time to find new restaurants. Â I hadn't found enough incentive to open a yelp account until now. Â This place is FANTASTIC. Â First, the food is fantastic. Â I'd never had Beliezian food before. Â The staff, owners, and chef/owner, Marie, Â are all really friendly and helpful. Â I had the chicken stew with rice and beans for the first time and I loved it. Â I went a second time where i tried the shrimp curry. Â Also excellent. Â The mixed appetizer plate with the empanades?, garnaches, tostada and one other thing is delicious and a great deal. Â You could have that as a meal if you eat light. Â
This place is pretty new and in a location that you would otherwise never go to.... Â so I had to let everyone know what a find this place is, Â You must give them a try. Â I even went out and bought a travel book on Belieze since I met the wonderful people at this restaurant!
8/27 - I went there again tonight. Â Whole snapper fried then stewed in coconut sauce was delicious.
I would like to start off by saying "I am a Belizean" and could be very critical about the food because my family is full of great cooks. Saying that to say "I LOVE THIS PLACE!!!". Me & my aunt took my mother to this restaurant for her birthday. From the moment we walked in the customer service was "Theeeee BEST!". From the beautiful decor to the constant asking "is everything ok?". -And the food-... Melt in your mouth Gooooooooood. My family ordered many things from the menu and all was awesome.
Just recently me and my family went for breakfast and once again -Top Notch- service & food (I had the stewed chicken fried beans and tortilla -side of avocado-). I look forward to seeing this place being featured on the -Food Network- because the world needs to know that -this IS the place to be-.
****I wish I could give more stars****
