This bar is a dive. It's kinda lame, bartenders have shitty attitudes, drinks are good though and relatively cheap. If they had a friendlier service I'd go back more often...

smug coked out bartenders but strong drinks. cant argue with that i guess. this is the hipster alternative to annabells. its kind of where all the people who are too cool to go dance at thursdays go, or who are now too old for that business. it sounds like im talking shit about the place but im really not. its a good bar but its really narrow so i wouldnt attempt the place on a busy night, you cant move. if you have anxiety attacks about crowded places just go outside on the patio. like i said good bands, strong drinks, and lots of hipsters. thats really all you can say about the matinee. its worth a stop on the highland square bar crawl.

Still 5 stars! Great service, heavy pour and food next door when you drink too much!

Do you like  being in small, intimate bars that are so loud that you are in danger of going deaf if you are in one for so long?  If so, this is the place for you.

The Matinee, named for the Highland Theater down the street, has a pretty high hipster-to-normal person ratio - something like 3:1.  Expect to see a lot of tatted-up people and people with unreasonably large ear gauges here, although the tattoos are different here than at Annabell's - not quite as dark and metal, if you know what I mean.  Since hipsters listen to any band before they became popular, they'll also drink any beer before they became popular.  That's why The Matinee has the largest beer selection in the Square.  I had a Brooklyn Lager yesterday - I would recommend it.  Their bartenders are generally nice, but they are beer snobs that dress like their clientele.

The best part about this place is Mr. Zub's (yes, I know it has its own Yelp page).  Mr. Zub's is a sandwich place that seems to include cream cheese with every sandwich, but it is sooo good.  You're allowed to order food from the bar, I think, which is really nice.  They name all their sandwiches after movies, movie characters, or movie quotes, so moviephiles will love this place, as will people who like food.

While I do not like the hipster lifestyle and its pretentiousness, this is a pretty good bar if you ignore how hipster people are here.

The Matinee is a pretty good place with a great bottle selection.  Drinks are cheap, which is always good, and the bar is connected to Mr. Zubs, which is fantastic.  Really the only reason this isn't a five star bar is The Matinee doesn't have the room to fit all of the patrons it sees, on any night.  I'd have to arrive at the bar around 7 pm to get a booth seat. After that, it's standing at the wall, right across from the toilets and just in the way of the back door.
Still, it's hard to really complain.  The clientele are usually good hearted people who are easy with conversation. The drinks are good. The food nearby is great. It's a good place.

5 stars for Mr. Zubs, 3 for Matinee. Mr. Zubs is amazing. I haven't gotten very far through the menu because I start at the top and keep reading til I find something I must eat immediately. It doesn't take long. The first time, I made it to the second sandwich on the list. Everything I've had (and everyone else I've talked to who's been there) is delicious. My favorite kind of food.

As an added bonus, you can bring your beer from Matinee (connected) or have your food brought over to you at Matinee.

Nothing against Matinee, there's just not a ton of room for hanging out and the beer selection's not that great. If it's not too crowded, it's fine to sit at the bar. It's just not my favorite place in highland square. The bathroom's nice and clean though which is a plus. Best thing about Matinee is Mr. Zubs. It's a must.

I've put off writing a review for The Matinee for far too long. What started off as the best new bar in Highland Square had eventually ALSO become the best new drunken eating spot to boot. Part of what made me procrastinate was that I was really hoping that Mr. Zub's was actually a separate business and that I would score the first review, but alas, Mario told me that it isn't so, which is why I write this today.

The bar is one of Akron's finest drinking spots for the hipster kids, the young and the aging. For being such a small bar, it's rather impressive how well the stage contains the live music nights. If I'm in Akron, it's inevitable that my first stop is going to be The Matinee. I can confidently say that 9 times out of 10, I'll run into someone that I know.

    Now for Mr. Zub's...

There is a place in Broad Ripple, Indy, that I could compare this place to, but that wouldn't likely help most of you. For those from Indy, it's sort of like Ripple Bagel & Deli, but without the bagel theme. You'll find everything from rather conventional sandwiches, to the highly creative and decadent. So when the clock strikes 2AM, you can walk in here and pretend like you're going to get one of the healthier options and walk out with a heavy gut full of tasty goodness.

The best part is that though, to me, they feel like two different places, you're more than welcomed to bring your drinks and foods back and forth 'til your heart's content. Or until you can't walk without assistance.

The combination of these fine establishments is but another fine addition to the Nemr Dynasty.

I've only been to the bar part once and it was decent, but the real goods are at the food side called Mr. Zubs.  It doesn't have a listing in on Yelp so Im gonna say here that they have some sweet food and its open real late, like 2 a.m.  Try the Uncle Rico.  Anything with tater tots on it is A-Okay in my book.

    great happy hour specials.
    fabulous bartenders.
    strong pours.
the best jukebox in the greater akron area.
    house made fruit infused vodka.
    pool table.
great little alley in the back for smoking.
wii and whatnot set up for play.

the matinee is like thursday's little sister.  it smells nicer than thursdays, thats for sure.  and it's a lot smaller.  there is no dance floor, but there are plenty of dance-able tunes.   it definitely has a cozy feeling to it.  there is live music often.

it's the perfect monday night bar... or the perfect place to grab a drink or two before heading to thursday's.
