Great atmosphere with very friendly bartenders. Definitely the best dance club in the Akron area. This place has multiple areas to hang out in, all of which are somewhat compartmentalized and intimate. The music is almost always good, and they usually have DJs who take requests on Friday and Saturday nights.
Review Source:I've lived in Highland Square for longer than I care to admit; and, until last night, I'd never been here. The feeling that came over me after stepping inside is akin to the day the baby I watch discovered that she had hands - "You mean these things are RIGHT HERE?! To entertain me ALWAYS?!?!" In short, I now know that Square exists and I am never going back to my Square-less days.
It was Sunday night. A jazz band was playing in the corner, which just added to the ridiculous ambiance of this place. The crowd was of a hip, classy, slightly older fashion. Also, the lighting was really nice. I feel really weird for mentioning that, but bars screw up the lighting so much that this was a welcome reprieve.
I've been to most of the gay bars in the Akron/Cleveland area, and Square stands out as being the most cozy, relaxed, and un-grimy of all of them. I can see why straight folks flock to it - it's upscale yet unpretentious. The bartenders were super friendly, and we didn't need to wait in line or make obscene, exxagerated hand gestures to get their attention. Drink prices were reasonable, but it's definitely not the cheapest place in the area to get hammered (thank god).
You had the options of sitting at the bar (which was packed with friendly people), shakin' it on the dance floor (surprisingly large!), or taking a seat slightly farther away from the action at tables (with fun, comfy swivel chairs!). This place is seriously bigger than it looks.
A+, Square. You've won yourself another regular.
