Went here on a whim without reading any reviews. Â We actually had a really nice time. Â It was a Saturday night and I did feel like the oldest female there though (I'm 33). Â We got a small table on the roof right away.
Mixed drinks were a little over priced but that's typical for these kinds of places. Â We were on vacation so we were splurging. Â We had just come from Crush Winehouse and that was terrible so maybe that's why this place was so great. Â
Good music playing (two guys/acoustic)... waiter was really nice. Â Food was really good. Â We go the alligator tacos and the seafood flatbreat and the brussel sprouts. Â Now that I read all the reviews about the cleanliness there I am a little worried because it was so dark and we couldnt see if things were clean or not.
Oh well... It was a fun experience and we would go back if in town there again!
If I could, I would give it zero stars. I got a Bloody Mary that was disgusting and had to send it back. I ordered the crab eggs Benedict and the crab tasted like a cookie... Weird and gross and the egg was barely cooked. The potatoes were soggy and were clearly frozen and just dumped in a microwave. The "hollandaise sauce" was apparently squirted out o a squeeze bottle and tasted like mustard. Finally my friends both ordered the lox, and each got a different type of bagel, even though that wasn't asked when they ordered. We weren't charged for the Bloody Mary or eggs Benedict but the rest was overpriced and the waiter was completely incompetent and never apologized once. I ended up going to dunkin donuts after and have never been happier to be there! Please never go here, it was absolutely disgusting.
Review Source:Been here several times and the service can be hit or miss. I have waited for over 2 hours for a Sunday brunch (granted in was when a Groupon was about to expire) but have been prompted seated at the rooftop deck on a Friday afternoon for happy hour. Drinks here are so-so. Happy hour prices on drinks are not really that great. However, the menu is creative, which is what usually brings me back. However, on my last visit, there was aparently a new chef. Our zucchini and eggplant chips only had zucchini. And while reseraching for this review, I realized our server never gave us the happy hour food pricing or the separate menu that is listed on the website. Minus another star.
Review Source:My favorite thing about metropolitan is the concept - and when executed well on a good night, this can be a great place. Â On the downside however through my several visits here one thing that has been constant is inconsistency. Â I have been going here intermittently over the course of the past three yrs, roughly - and based on those good/not so great experiences I go in phases of liking and then not liking the restaurant....
Of most recent - I was told the menu had changed fairly substantially by a friend and decided to give it a try. Â We sat upstairs on the roof deck, which is a great atmosphere however should be noted their outdoor furniture (and indoor for that matter) is well worn and needs replaced! Â (In general looks ok but it's clear they went cheap on furnishings and it shows - dirty white furniture, wobbly chairs, abraded wicker, etc). Â Anyways back to our visit.... Â We started off with the tuna tartar - not great quality and head to head Level's is much better. Â For entrees my husband ordered the flat iron steak and I ordered my usual Lamb Burger. Â My husband was actually fairly impressed with the steak, and it came with Brussels sprouts which were cooked perfectly and had great flavor. Â The lamb burger I am a little more critical of....as it has been my favorite in town for years.....and they changed the recipe!! Â It used to be a great taziki, cucumber, tomato and lettuce. Â It is now taziki, feta, and cucumber relish - very disappointing! Â The burger seemed bigger than it used to be but also felt as though the quality or taste was different. Â Anyways - if there was one thing that kept me coming back, it was that burger, and now it is ok, but just not as stand out as it was before. Â During our visit - service was great and they seemed fairly organized. Â Past visits I had observed service to be very inconsistent - in general the restaurant seems a little disorganized and when they get a big crowd they have a hard time keeping up.
We will be back for certain, we love the rooftop deck and the drinks are great. Â Will need to find a new go to for food!
We DID eat here . . . should have come for Bosley. (whomever he or she may be). Stopped for late lunch (2:30p), place was lightly populated. We were seated and waited for a server to show. Orders were finally taken. We were still waiting for table setups. . . Â tried to flag down someone for a fork, spoon, or any type of utensil. Finally managed to get setups (from next table . . . DUH!) Â We tried the gazpacho . . .not good and did lack the usual gazpacho chopped condiments to ensure it was not good. Â Wife and I almost emptied a bottle of crappy hot sauce (no good stuff here) in an effort to add some taste. Â Meal finally came. Wife had pork tacos w/ stupid name (to charge more), I had the "fresh tuna" teeny weenie burger, kid had breakfast (kids are always smarter than their parents). Â I found my teeny weenie tuna burger under a slab o' tomato and lettuce. It was okay but, tiny. Â (It was like the old Woody Allen line . . . the food is lousy and the portions are too small). Â Wife had no comment on tacos, kid liked her fried potatoes. Â Didn't stay for dessert. Told server we were in a rush (to move the check along) and escaped. Â Living Social coupon saved the day. Â Saw servers putting together those setups we did not receive, on way out. Â Turns out they were simply too busy setting up for dinner to bother w/ us. Â Never again. . . well . . . maybe for free.
Review Source:I went here because it was one of the places recommended for vegetarians. (I'm not vegan; Happy Cow reviews suggest this place is not as good for vegans.)
I started with an eggplant caponata. It was decent but not great. The eggplant was a bit too hard for my liking (I perfer my caponata more...mushy), and it was accompanied by hard, toasted baguette slices. This was an okay bread for soaking up the caponata juices, but a soft bread might have done even better.
For my mains I got the black bean burger. Before ordering I asked the waitress whether it was made in-house and she said it was; it certainly seemed to be. Not being breaded and deep-fried it was sloppy, but held together well enough to not all fall out. (We make non-fried lentil burgers at home that have the same feel but are far sloppier and messier, so I appreciated this.) The spinach atop the burger was a good touch. The bun was decent. Most of all, the core burger was tasty, so I enjoyed this part of my meal.
I got the burger with fries. How do you not make good fries? Fried potato: it's carbohydrate, oil, and "fry"! Yet somehow the fries were bland, weak, cool...so unredeeming as to be insulting to the spuds they started from.
I had come by during a run and inquired about seating. I was told it starts to fill up by 6pm, so I came at 5:30. I therefore had a nice table and good service. The bar area looks absolutely superb. But others who have commented on crumbs and slightly grungy dishes are right.
Overall, there aren't a lot of good vegetarian options in Annapolis, which makes this place a pretty good find. Elsewhere, it would be only decent. It has so much promise, though, and I hope it improves.
The vibe is definitely curious: some odd blend of preppy+hipster.
Cleanliness not a priority
In the food business priority #1 should be cleanliness because you are serving food to the public. Metropolitan Kitchen and Lounge failed on cleanliness. Food was okay but I won't go back. It was a bad dining experience.
This review provides in the moment texts to a friend followed by the details of the experience.
Text: I had high hopes for metropolitan kitchen but I am already turned off. Table dirty, several chairs w/ crumbs, served water in an absolutely filthy juice glass that still had all residue
from tomato or carrot juice.
Details: We walked in, approached our table, Mom pulled out her chair to sit, it was full of crumbs. She looked to the next table to grab that chair but it had food in it. She went over one more table and grabbed that chair and switched it out for her crumb filled chair. Why didn't she sweep the food onto the floor? Beneath our table was already a lot of food--actual remnants of food, more than crumbs. We were seated, the waitress brought water to the table as well as small juice glasses. She poured water into the glasses. When she sat my glass down before me, I said "that glass is really dirty." The waitress said matter-of-factly all our glasses and cups are really stained from coffee and tea. I looked at her and said, this is a glass, and that looks like tomato juice. She took the glass away. As she left I said to my mom, what kind of crap is that! No one serves coffee or tea in a juice glass. This was tomato or carrot juice around entire circumference of glass, the kind of marks left from tipping the glass to drink and the liquid flows up and then back down. The waitress was not rude but seemed a little exasperated like she has had to make this excuse before. I should note that we went through several coffee mug/tea cups too because each one given to my mom had actual food on it or in it. Â Mind you there were no stains on the very white translucent cups, just food.
Text: If i wasn't w/ mom i would leave.
Text: Mom ordered a cup of tea. Cup dirty. Waitress said I swear all our cups are stained w/ coffee but they are clean . In front of waitress Mom pushed food away to show it was not a stain.
Details: This food was on the inside of the cup filled w/ hot water, for tea.
Text: Second cup just came. It had markings. Waitress sat it down said...it is just a stain. Mom took spoon and scratched the food right off the cup. Geezus!!
Details: Â When second cup was sat down in front of Mom and waitress was taking her hand away, Mom sort of wrinkled her nose and was looking hard at the outside of the cup. Mom told waitress in a voice of sort of disbelief, "Well this isn't clean either," and pointed to something on the cup. Waitress again pleaded that the restaurants dishes are just stained. Mom picked up her spoon and scratched at the food on the outside of cup; it flicked off. Waitress looked a little embarrassed. Mind you, other than food the white cup had no coffee or tea stains. No stains at all.
Text: I asked Mom if she wants to leave. She was hesitant and said she felt bad cuz food already ordered.
Details: Food came. I was really not wanting to eat this food. Clearly cleanliness is not a priority for Metro Kitchen. If they serve dirty dishes to customers and present a dirty dining room then I hate to see the state of the kitchen. I did eat, the food was good. I tried hard to not look at my plate. Half way through the meal Mom leans over and says, "I suppose we should have looked at the plates." We both laughed not because the situation was funny but because the odds were that our food was sitting on top of someones previous meal residue. I replied, "Stop, I need to not think about that or I will not be able to eat this food."
I had two-eggs fried hard, bacon, and sweet potato waffles. Eggs were cooked fine, bacon okay, waffles were really good pancakes. I say this because the texture was not really like a waffle but like a pancake...shaped like a waffle.
Mom had the Metropolitan burger. She said it was a good burger but it was small. It was a tiny burger in general but especially for the $15 price tag.
Can I or will I recommend Metropolitan Kitchen and Lounge? Absolutely NOT. When I dine out I am dining out for a good to great dining experience, which is created via the atmosphere--style, layout, cleanliness, music, waitstaff, and food. Metro Kitchen failed on cleanliness. When we arrived, at 11:45 am, there were no customers in the restaurant. Why couldn't someone sweep the floor? There were two staffers in the dining area. How could someone have set our table, put the rolled napkin of flatware down next to a pile of crumbs and not clean away the crumbs? How can they repeatedly pick up dishes/glassware from the kitchen area and bring it out to customers w/ chunks of food on it? I hate to see the state of the kitchen.
If I lived in Annapolis, which in some dreams I do, this would be my go-to hangover brunch place. With a modern take on some brunch classics and an emphasis on local produce, this place is trendy but not intimidating with an upscale diner vibe. I had the orchard mimosa, which was delicious, but would have been even more appropriate in the fall months, and a croissant with local jelly, which was perfect.
Review Source:I would definitely like to return as the menu is huge! Â I appreciated the lentil-blackbean spinach patty (burger option), the flavor was great even if it was a bit soft and messy...though a sauce option would be nice....why is it that cooks assume that vegetarians don't like condiments? Â I got some mustard and that was good. Â My friend had the rockfish with succotash and greens and loved it. Â We started with zucchini fritters with a creamy lemon sauce. Â They had a bit of heat and were super yummy! They have a great beer selection and a seasonal rotating menu.
Review Source:I really want to like this place. Â The food, if you ordered the right thing, is awesome. Â The Bloody Mary comes with a piece of bacon and a pickle. Â What can be wrong with that, right? Â Well, the drink was really thick, almost like marinara sauce. And overly spicy.
The room we were seated in was really dark and smelled of vomit/baby excrement. Â The wait staff was aloof and did not know the drink specials. Â Additionally, we got an out of date menu.
The food was pretty flavorful, local and seasoned well. Â I wish everything was as good as the food, but it's just not. Â If you come here, sit at the bar. Â It's your best bet for decent service and far enough from the bathroom to where you don't lose your lunch before it comes from the kitchen.
Just recently had brunch on sunday here at this establishment. Â I was there awhile ago but the service was not to be desired. Â I decided to give this another try and had a fabulous experience. Â The Bloody Mary's are the best I have ever had and the breakfast which is called the "hangover" was actually very good. Â We sat near the door and it was freezing that was my only issue and hence not a 5th star. Â I am looking to head back soon again and try other items on their menu. Â I am a huge fan of farm to table menus and also creative cocktails from a restaurant.
Review Source:This is strictly an upstairs bar review. Â Came here for some hippie show I wasn't really into, with some friends that were into it. Â The upstairs area is really quite fantastic; the windows are ceiling to floor and freak me out when I get too close and look down. Â There's a huge depiction of Abraham Lincoln made out of pennies on the wall. Â The way the bar is laid out made me think of it as an airport bar for some reason; I guess its got a futuristic feel to it and it's kind of small. Â There's the bar, and a few short tables to the left of it, and then to the right halfway down a hallway that leads to the bathrooms, there's an entrance to a small room where the stage is. Â One thing I thought was very cool was that when the bands were playing, you could hear their music through the speakers in the bar area.
The best part about this place is the cocktails. Â Very interesting mixed drinks and I quite enjoyed trying different ones to find what I liked best. Â I tried the Bramble, the Maimoun and the Chrysalis, which were all pretty boozy. Â It was a couple of weeks ago so I'm hazy on the details, but I think I liked the Chrysalis one the best, with gin and grapefruit juice. Â I ended the night with a Full Sail Session lager, which looked and tasted like a Red Stripe, my favorite beer. Â Minus one star for only having one bartender who would take orders; there was another guy there who would only make drinks when the main bartender told him what to make. Â I want my drink now damnit!
Went here for a late lunch with my parents and I must say, we had a good time. I had been wanting to try this place for a while (love the Farm to Table concept) and from what I can tell reading other reviews, their menu does change frequently (meaning they stick true to their use of fresh, seasonal ingredients).
I ordered the Farmer's Wife signature juice (watermelon, cucumber, apple, basil) and I could tell it was really fresh squeezed and it tasted great. To eat, I ordered the Crispy Eggplant Burger with lettuce, tomato, mozzarella, and extra mushrooms. It came with a blackberry vinaigrette that made it absolutely divine. I wish I could eat something like that all the time!
My mom got the seafood flatbread (crab, shrimp, grilled calamari, seasoned greens, mozzarella, and Old Bay seasoning... there were some extra bits of squid on there!) I ended up helping her finish it up because it was so good. The Old Bay on top was the perfect amount, too... it was truly a Maryland dish.
My dad got the Lamb burger, which I didn't try, but he said it was great - almost like a lamb gyro.
The side salads that we got with our burgers were tasty, too... simple and fresh!
The service was okay... a little slow. There weren't many people around (about 3-4pm), but our waitress kept things interesting. She kept forgetting small things - my mom's cream and sugar, my vinaigrette, another customer's coffee. But she was a character! - very cute and she really engaged in conversation with us. Maybe a lot of people wouldn't have enjoyed the conversation at a meal (it got a little personal - college tuition, religious beliefs, education, etc), but my parents were absolutely thrilled with her energetic personality. Â Although she was a bit forgetful, it was a different, fun energy she brought to our experience at Metropolitan.
The food was great, the service - a little room for improvement - but overall, I am a fan and will definitely be back to see what other delicious seasonal options pop up!
UPDATE to change rating. Â Service and quality faltered to the point where i will not return.
It seems that once they received a crowd of regulars from the groupon, landmark, and living social deals, they slashed service, portions, and quality.
I am not a fan of memorizing orders and nothing peeves me more than my food being served and incorrect.... and cold.
Too much to update now, just know that Mother's Day was the last straw. Â The place was empty. Â I was overtalked by the host and offered a seat in a less than desirable location due to the fact that they had reservations... And advised that I would have to be out in an hour. Â After "host" was finished talking, I advised him that I had the very first reservation in their system. Â I asked to be placed where I usually sit and was obliged. Â I am a multi-racial woman and this left me feeling disgusted with this place. Â A family came in as we were about to leave and the mom was offered a rose. Â the host/waiter turned to me and said, "ooops, i forgot to give you a rose." Â
I had to advise management that the bathroom was filthy from the day before.... No paper towels, as the were all spilling out of the trashcan.
So done.
--------------------
We stopped in because my brother-in-law said he had a damn good crab cake sandwich here. Â The crab cake was great, and instead of buns they used fried green tomatoes.
Uhm, sold. Â We didn't waste a minute on our way to the door.
But we didn't have time to eat a full meal, so I can only report on some nibbles, a cocktail, the atmosphere, and the service for now. Â Okay, that's actually a lot of ground to cover. Â And let me tell you: Metropolitan knocks the ball out of the park on every one of these parameters. Â
For eats:
House fries with Chesapeake aioli - grade: A-, the aioli is the bomb. Â In fact, I asked the waiter for an extra little cup of it because my inner fat kid came out and ate up all that they gave us. Â The fries are really nicely seasoned, and they come out piping hot. Â My only wish... just a little more crispiness? Â Okay, that's just getting too picky.
Quinoa and Zucchini fritters - grade: A, these are original and fresh and they are delightfully complemented by the lemon yogurt that is served with them. Â One of my favorite things to eat when I go to Greece every summer is their famous zucchini balls, which are just fried balls of zucchini hash. Â These little fritters at Metropolitan took me right back to the terrace in Athens and perhaps even out-did the Greeks by adding the lemon zest and quinoa.
For drinks:
Smokin' Hot Mexican Vampire - grade: A, wowza! Â The spice in this thing will wake you up! Â Plus, the drink is hot pink. Â How cool is that? Â The whole thing blew me away. Â And this wasn't even the bartender's favorite drink on the menu. Â I can't wait to go back and waste an afternoon working my way down their cocktail list.
Hubs had a beer that he's never tried before. Â It's difficult for him to find new beers. Â So if you are a beer snob, this could definitely be the place for you.
Ambience/Service:
grade: A-, they weren't busy at all while we were there (5:00pm the day after Thanksgiving), so things were slow and the staff was goofing off a lot and really chatty. Â It felt very "local pub" to me. Â I like that kind of thing. Â
Overall: I HIGHLY recommend this place. Â It's the cocktail bar Annapolis has been needing.
Great food, quality drinks, good bands, don't understand the 3* rating.
I came here for dinner recently with some coworkers while on a business trip. Â Cool, chill place with a very solid mixed drink list and really interesting menu.
First, the drinks. Â Had a Mule and Bee - nice and tart, really good. Â Then put a test to the bartender - wow. Â Wow. Â Was one of the 10 best mixed drinks I've ever had. Â Dude has serious skills and premixed ingredients I've never heard of.
For appetizers, we ordered the mussels and the duck meatballs. Â I don't eat shellfish, but the duck meatballs were great - good sauce, nice and tangy, sweet, and just good.
For my entree, I got the grilled salmon and split a side of the mac&cheese. Â My salmon was nicely prepared and really tasty. Â The Mac&Cheese was really cheesy and a bit heavy, all around pretty good. Â My coworkers' entrees were all good, they were very happy with their meals as well.
I was only there on a Wednesday night so no chance to see the place as anything more than a restaurant, but saw Black Taxi, a great band I know from NYC playing there for $8. Â Pretty cool.
Net, it's a great restaurant with high quality mixed drinks, a solid beer list and a cool atmosphere. Â That's good enough for me, and it should be for you too.
Located right off on West Street (between Loews and the Westin), this restaurant has an awkwardly shaped dining room and a roof-top bar. Â I've had good experiences here and as a result, I've got to give them props. Â There are a good number of vegetarian and gluten-free options if you're dining with those that have dietary restrictions.
I think the Artisanal Cheese Board, Black Bean Hummus or the Deviled eggs are great ways to start a meal...and if there is any food I love, it's eggs. Â For a meal, I personally like the Local Heirloom Tomato Salad. Â It's simple, but they do it well. Â The Spicy Seared Scallops are also tasty. Â The earthy taste of the beats and root veggies are a good contrast to the seafood
For cocktails, we've had the Cucumber Moon (fresh, citrusy and the right amount of St. Germain) as well as the Ginger Smash (I'm a sucker for ginger). Â Both are enjoyable and I'm sure there are other cocktails that are worth sampling.
Wow! I dont know where to start. Ive seen this place change almost a handful of times over the years. I have friends that know the owner and got a good review from them for breakfast so a friend and I popped in for lunch on a nice Friday afternoon. My friend got there first. When I walked through the bar, which had this sort of warehouse feel to it,  I didn't see my friend. Then I walked around the corner and saw her sitting at this dark table in a dark, weird lighted  room. I said let's move because I cant even read the menu (remember its a nice afternoon).
So they move us  further in on what I can only describe as a ramp to what used to be a door ramp in one of the restaurants former iterations. Honestly, the place just felt dirty, I almost said let's leave but we stayed to see what it was all about. So the rug was the dirty ugly brownish color, maybe in the evening you can't see it, but in the day time, gross and depressing! The two booths to my left were not much better and the table was not nice and my "leather" chair was so worn I didn't even want to sit in it.
Again...the bar I walked through seemed bright and light but where they sat us was a mess and needed an overhaul.
Now I have been here in other lives of this restaurant and I know they have a rooftop. Either it was not open for lunch or no one offered it to us. We did see someone taking flowers up there...oh I didn't mention that our table was on the ramp that led to the stair to go to the roof top.
Ok, so three paragraphs and we have not even gotten to the food. Let me start by saying that the menu, in not good light, looks dirty. Why you ask? Because they printed it on the brown spotted antique white colored paper. Not a good idea.
Our first waitress seemed  bothered that we needed a little more time to check out the menu. When we were ready the owner came and he was quite nice and helpful (I know he was one of the owners because, again, I know people who know him).
My friend ordered the salted roasted beet salad (field greens and goat cheese). We inquired if they were golden or red beets (I am a golden beet fan personally) and he explained they are red, but sometimes golden depending on what is available (that was encouraging, maybe things will pick up with the food I thought). You can get that salad with (tofu $3, Steak $5, Salmon $8, Shrimp $8, Scallops $8 or Chicken $4). Â My friend chose the scallops. The menu had $5.95/$10.95 for the salad. it was never explained why. So because of our bill I am guess my friend got the $10.95 salad +$8. That's $19 for a salad with 4 scallops. And this salad was small. And when the scallops came they were blackened/spicy, my friend doesn't do spicy well and they were never described as spicy.
I ordered the Met Roasted Corn and Crab Salad with Avocado. This was ok, fresh but not much to it. To me it was a take off the Chart House crab stack less the huge amount of jumbo lump and flavor. By the time we finished we decided we didn't really want to order anything more and went and sat to have a coffee down the street.
The gentleman at the bar was very nice when I asked about parking validation, which is very nice in Annapolis and not done commonly.
Really disappointing! If you go and try either sit at the bar or request to go up stairs.
Early morning slow service food was ok. Once the GM (or owner?) got there things perked up. Skinny  omelette was tasty with thick toast. Hubby's omelette was a bit overlooked, but flavorful.  The sweet potato waffle was good, but the rosemary syrup was confusing and off putting.  Better off offering regular also, although personally, I think a dollop of mascarpone and a honey drizzle would've been awesome.  Food came out a it cold.  Urban funk decor, organic, sustainable and they entertain gluten free and vegan.
Review Source:My husband and I have been to the Met just a handful of times, but every time we have gone it's been a lot of fun. We enjoyed everything from the people watching, to their eclectic drink menu, to just simple, good, and healthy food.
I am bummed to read some of the not-so-positive reviews, but I have never experienced poor service, etc. and found the owner(s) quite nice and interesting when chatting them up.
I guess it is all about the individual experience and perspective of the diners, but from my experience, thoroughly enjoyable - particularly on nights when there is a DJ and/or a musician entertaining us.
Will def go back!
Awful! Simply awful! I have nothing positive to say about my dining experience at Metropolitan Kitchen & Lounge.
We went for Breakfast on a Sunday and the place wasn't that busy. We were seated at a very odd table - the ONLY one that was in a place totally devoid of natural light. So we moved....
The menu looked interesting enough but every single one of our dishes ranged from disappointing to completely tasteless. My husband and I had the biscuits and gravy (his with ham, mine with duck confit) and by biscuitS they really mean, just ONE biscuit. This turned out to be OK because it, and the gravy on top of it were tasteless anyway! The gravy literally tasted like butter and flour - c'mon, this is not a challenging thing to make!! I was so disappointed. The potatoes that came with it were luke warm when served. The Vegetarian stuffed pepper might have been the most successful but I'd still only give it a C - so that's not saying much.
The service was horrible and even neglectful. I ordered a fruit plate which never came. One of our friends had pancakes but syrup wasn't brought to him. In fact, my husband and I were done with our dishes before we even saw the server again to ask her for syrup. We sat around debating whether or not we would express our disappointment to the server about, well, everything, but she never even bothered to ask us how our meals were so we didn't get the opportunity.
The only positive of the experience is that we saw Kevin Spacey while we were there. Not that that makes me want to give this place another star because it doesn't even deserve the ONE I'm giving it.
Please AVOID.
Maybe the hipster crowd doesn't eat? Â Or they don't have taste buds? Â Me? Â I can't stand this place.
Okay okay, we went with a group. Â I get it, we can't expect the same service. Â I won't even question the service because she did the best she could.
I will, however, question everything else. Â
The specialty drinks there are expensive. Â And small. Â And VERY inconsistent. Â I had one drink that was great, ordered the same one again and it was undrinkable (literally, and I love whiskey straight). Â Another person ordered in the group and it was Okay. Â Not acceptable, no matter how busy the bar is serving Pabst.
The restaurant concept is "Farm to Table" yet none of the ingredients really seemed local. Â Or that fresh. Â Whatever, as long as the food is good right?
Well, that isn't right either.
We start ordering and the GM or Expeditor or SOMEONE from the back kitchen comes out and starts yelling at our waitress, INFRONT OF US, to not take our orders because the kitchen is backed up. Â Um, Excuse me, that's not the way to handle the situation. Â Tell the table nicely. Â We'll understand, and probably buy a few more drinks anyways. Â We're here already. Â So she runs off, and comes back later to tell us it's a 30 minute wait, MINIMUM. Â Whatever, put our orders in anyways.
I got the short ribs with pureed vegetables.
YUCK. Â The sauce was flavourful. Â The meat was bland, the veggies were bland, and the dish was COLD. Â Um.....with a kitchen in the weeds, dishes should not have time to sit around. Â They should be coming out piping hot and if anything, under cooked. Â Not sitting around. Â
Some of the table did dessert. Â We were completely unsatisfied with everything and opted out. Â Glad we did, those who ordered were disappointed.
We won't be back. Â But I can't imagine this place will be around for much longer. Â There's a huge hipster crowd there, so maybe the $1.50 Pabst Blue Ribbon cans will keep them in business a little longer, but the food here is not worth the space it takes up on the plate. Â If you want TRUE farm to table food, go to Founding Farmers in DC, where they do everything right.
Not only was the food bad and the drinks inconsistent, it was INCREDIBLY pricy for the "quality" of the food. Â Overall, 1 star. Â And only because I can't assign zero stars. Â STEP YOUR GAME UP, METROPOLITAN. Â And sorry to any hipsters I offended (but seriously, I don't care....)
This location has had so many restaurants come and go. This one will be gone soon enough. I think the owner is trying to mimic what Founding Farmers has established in DC. I wasn't too impressed. To be fair, the others in my group seemed to like their food. I felt the "Small Plates" menu was confusing. There were small plates that cost nearly $15. How small is it going to be for $15?
I ordered the foodie burger, which is a burger of the day. It came with prosciutto, mozzarella, and salsa. What a weird combination. I tried to be open minded, but the ingredients just didn't work together.
I'll probably give this place one more try due to their craft beer selection, which was good.
I went to Met because i read reviews about it being veg friendly, which it definitely was. I was a little sad because when I went, the juicer was broken, but the waitress was VERY accommodating and offered to make me fresh squeezed lemonade- honestly, the best lemonade I have ever tasted! I ordered the lentil black bean burger and a small beet and greens salad. The waitress offered to replace the fries that the burger comes with with the salad for only a dollar more (originally a $6 salad). I thought that was another great accommodation.
When the food game, the burger was a little bit bland. It could have used some salt and something to make it less dry, like honey mustard or a cucumber-cilantro-yogurt spread, which is the only reason why this place gets 4 stars. The salad was AMAZING. I don't know what kind of dressing they used, but it was to die for. Very light and refreshing. Overall, a great experience at Metropolitan Kitchen & Lounge.
The food here is excellent with FRESH and nicely cooked food, but the service is disfunctional at best. We were going to a concert here later that night and I made a reservation with no problems. Considering it was Annapolis restaurant week and this location was participating I decided to make a reservation, which given the few tables in this restaurant, I recommend.
We were seated with no problem, but when my wife asked for a new napkin since there was snot in her napkin, she was given a new dirty napkin. In the process of getting the napkin, my drink order was taken and my wife was not asked at all for a drink order. When the server did take our dinner order, she started with me rather than my wife and again didn't ask her for a drink order.
My wife ordered a crabcake and I ordered the rockfish sandwich. The crabcake was one of the best my wife ever ate and the rockfish was very nicely lightly fried. The rockfish came with fresh cut fries and the fresh slaw was placed on top of the rockfish instead of on the side, which I would have put on the side to give the diner the option to put on the sandwich or eat seperately.
Service was slow since it took about 20 minutes to get our food and the owner (not our waitress) was attentive. I had the owner get my parking validated, the owner brought us the dessert menu since the waitress didn't pay attention and didn't check to see if everything was ok. She eventually asked us for dessert after the owner already brought us the menu and took our order. He also was nice enough to get us drink refills before the concert.
The concert was upstairs (bar and a few tablesare upstairs in addition to concert room) in a room that was designed to hold maybe 50 people and we had over 80 people there. The concert room is a nice, limited seated (2 sofas and 4 leather cubes to sit on in the back of the room) general admission (GA) venue. If you like the bar/GA club scene then this is fine, if not, then go elsewhere.
As for restrooms, the downstairs restrooms seem to be the original building restrooms and not very clean. The restrooms upstairs are newly remolded and MUCH clear and spacious.
The food was good enough to give one more chance to the restaurant. In the waitress' defense I think she was the only waitress for the WHOLE restaurant. I think if management got more staff for busy nights, it might GREATLY improve service. If the service continues to be disorganized, then I would suggest going to another fine establishment in the area.
Not sure how this place has snagged such high reviews, maybe it's the late night night drinks crowd... For lunch, we had a terrible experience.
They kicked it off by letting us sit at our table for a full 20 minutes before a waiter even bothered to come by to even acknowledge our presence. Another diner actually felt pity for us and tipped them off that they had just left us languishing in a corner.
When our server did arrive, he asked us "so, are you all set?" and started to walk away from the table before we could order and I actually had to stop him and clarify that we just arrived!
The ordering process was no easier, I'm pretty sure he was stoned, so we may as well have been speaking a foreign language, despite the fact that in the 20 intervening minutes we had fully figured out our very simple orders.
My beer arrived around nearly the same time as our food (another 10 minutes) and the lamb burger I ordered was nothing to write home about (punks is better and cheaper). Our other dish, an eggplant sandwich was pretty good, but it was tough to get too excited by that point.
Other notes: the floors were dirty and did not appear to have been cleaned, decor probably looks better with fog machine on and lights off than it did in the late afternoon, and we had the misfortune of having another couple seated next to us who talked as loudly as possible with the staff and others about having spent the entire previous late night there at Metropolitan!
Ack.
We tried this restaurant because of the farm to table concept.
I left thinking the chef must be a cheap find right out of a community college cooking school program. Burgers & fries were the only thing we found palatable and even they were average. I had the lamb burger which was tasty but certainly not a reason to go back. A fellow diner had bouillabaisse which was bordering on unidentifiable & inedible. Another had short ribs which were tender but bland and just off. Â I also ordered a side of brussel sprouts which came out blackened - like with the seasoning. I almost had to spit them out they were cooked to the point of mush and all you could taste was raw blackening seasoning all over them. Big disappointment. Even my salted beet salad was clearly canned beets diced up. Come on guys...really? You think we wouldn't notice??
Does seem to be family friendly as there were kids all over the place playing hide and seek while their parents dined in the bar. Having kids myself I think this is fabulous but if I was 25 I would think this was wierd.
I'd go back for the bar scene with friends and perhaps a burger just to put something in my stomach and continue drinking. The cocktail I ordered was decently good actually. I am sure the roof top is fun in season but as for a memorable dinner...Skip it.
We stepped in the Metropolitan early Saturday morning because we saw that they served fresh juices and being the juicing people we are, we thought..hey let's get a juice! Â Obviously we were the first people in the door and Emily has just gotten her first cup of Joe started in her system. Â The juice took some time for her to prepare and while we waited at the bar I perused the menus. Â All of the menus looked great, everything being themed "from farm to kitchen" locally grown and raised. Â
Mr. Man got a amazing beet themed juice that was well, amazing. Â I went for the detox juice and was happy as well. Â It was so good to have juice and a healthy option available on our mini-vacation. Â We decided to continue on down our walk around Annapolis and explore the city some more, but ended up returning for breakfast a few hours later. Â
I decided to use the restroom before ordering and was not pleased to find sopping wet towels outside the bathroom door. Â Upon entering the restroom the smell of over-flow toilet assailed my nose. Â On top of which, the floor was obviously VERY wet and there had been a flood or overflow. Â A hand-written sign stating "out of order" was tacked on the bathroom stall door. Â I wasn't pleased to have to tip-toe around a dirty, smelly bathroom. Â
Returning to the table, the booths were dirty, the carpets obviously stained and smelly as well. Â In general, I found the entire restaurant unsanitary, and of course I questioned why I chose to dine there. Â Don't even entertain thought about what the kitchen must look like. Â
The food was not to temperature, the service was SLOW. Â Water wasn't refilled, coffee wasn't refilled. Â We waited over 10 minutes for our check to be picked up.
Metropolitan Kitchen, I love your concept. Â Your execution sucks and seriously...invest in some cleaning products & use them! Â The juice and the coffee were highlights, but after witnessing the un-cleanliness....I'm just not sure I want to risk my health or spend my money.
Good luck!
Went here for "date night" with my wife. Â We had stumbled across the place one afternoon and had coffee and an appetizer, and it was excellent - good peppermint latte, good coffee and the waitress nicely improvised a hot chocolate for our kid. Â Service was good. Â
But our return visit was not nearly as satisfying. Â It began - and ended - with horrid service. Â Just brain-dead service. Â Our waitress took our drink order. Â She returned a full 15 minutes later, and asked if she had taken our drink order!
Onto the food... Our cheese-plate appetizer was fine. Â But it's hard to screw up slices of cheese: two good cheddars and a blue (which the waitress could only identify as "blue cheese"). Â
Entrees: El Wife got a seafood casserole, which was bland. Â It tasted like something my grandma would have made out of Betty Crocker for "fancy" night, thinking she was really going to impress grandpa. It wasn't bad, just... meh. Â
My roasted rosemary chicken was nicely seared. Â But I could not taste the rosemary at all. Â Instead, the skin was coated in what tasted like a molasses and herb kind of baste - it was sweetish. Â The chicken itself? It tasted and chewed as if reheated. Â If I had to bet, I would say the chicken had been slow-baked or boiled off at least two days prior, and broiled to order. However, the mac-and-cheese side was sublime!
Annnnnnnd. Â That's about when our waitress truly disappeared for about 20 minutes. Â I'm leaving out about 15 just lame-o moves - or non-moves - from the wait staff this night. Our dessert - a very flat "apple pie egg roll" kind of thing. Â
I do love local restaurants that aspire to care about food. Â So I might give Metro another chance. Â But at this point, they seem to have one thing going for them: an ambitious menu with tons of potential. Â What they are lacking, from the wait staff to the food, is execution. Â I hope they get it... cause I do wanna like this place.
2.5
We went to the new Metropolitan last night, and I was underwhelmed. The space is fun, loud, and energetic, but the food was just not that great. My party ordered a variety of small plates to start. The duck meatballs were bland, the scalloped potatoes were delicious but waaaaay overpriced (the four pieces of scalloped potatoes equaled one small potato for $5), the chicken and waffles were good but not delicious. We then ordered the foodie burger which was $14 and came as nothing more than a small plain burger with mushrooms on top! Not worth $14.
Overall, just average food, not good enough for me to want to return for dinner. Maybe I will try brunch, based on the good reviews here. I could see this place being fun in the spring and summer for after work drinks since they have a roof top deck.
There is something about sitting on the roof top of a building that has white lights strung overhead- it's very special. The Autumn sunsets are pinky orange and streaked across the cooler blue skies behind Annapolis' building silhouettes.
On this particular Sunday night, it wasn't that busy and 6pm is the perfect time to get a table upstairs. Although the service was a little slow, I sipped through a Ginger Smash that I decided to try (too much cranberries for me?) to get to some of my favorite drinks...Mule and Beer (or Bear or Bee...seen it written all three different ways on their different menus). Tasted the Chrysalis- very good lavender liqueur. Â Cucumber Moon is deliciously refreshing and light!
I think our food had been sitting for a little bit before they brought it out because it took a good amount of time and the regular fries were cold and soggy and the shoe string fries that they forgot and went back to get were kinda cold too. I really liked the Aged Cheddar Mac and Cheese and still enjoy the Spicy Charred Brussel Sprouts. The Crispy Eggplant Burger with Mozzerella, Spinach, Tomato, Sauteed Onions and Peppers was tasty and a perfect combination of all the flavors. The Smokey Salmon Burger with Gran Mustard was pretty good but a little fishy for me. My favorite part was the homemade pickle that came with the salmon burger.
I have a soft spot in my heart for Metropolitan Cafe. But they seriously need to clean their bathroom upstairs- it was smelly like a guys bathroom (it's unisex) and shouldn't be that bad early in the night. I will be back and hopefully my next visit will be a hit like I would expect it to be.
I was already a fan of this spot before I entered the door. Having been Metro once before I was excited to try it again after it reopened. I loved Latin Quarter for it's ambiance so knew I'd love the Roof Top Bar.
When I walked in the door I was surrounded by groups of people talking, laughing and enjoying great drinks and food. I was instantly hooked. I went here on a Friday night around 8pm so I was expecting a wait. There was none except for the rooftop bar which was where I wanted to be. There was a private party which was ending so that was the only hold up.
After a girlfriend met me in the bar we sat there and waited for our table. When it was ready we were lead up the 5 HUGE flights of stairs. *Warning don't do this when intoxicated :) *
We were brought the menu which consisted of Entrées, Flatbreads, Small Plates, Burgers , Desserts and Salads. We wanted to try a bunch of things so we opted first for the Crab and Artichoke dip. It was to die for. So creamy I could have eaten it with a spoon.
We next tried the Duck Meatballs - which I was really disappointed with. They weren't bad, just didn't taste really like much of anything and for 8.00 it definitely wasn't worth it.
For drinks, I started with my favorite a Caipirinha (can never say it right). This one was with Orange and Basil which was unique! My friend tried the Granadilla which was a fruity drink she loved.
The second drink I tried was the Chrysalis - Gin, Lemon, Grapefruit, Crème de Violette (what?) Jasmine Liqueur, VERY unique stuff but my waitress suggested it. It was floral obviously but a very interesting drink worth trying!
Our last order was the Veggie Flatbread. SO good.
Happy Hour has $5 Burgers and Flatbreads so I will definitely be back!!
Finally an outstanding brunch in Annapolis. Â It's trendy and attractive without being pretentious, and the food is absolutely top-notch.
Located near the outer traffic circle on West, the Metropolitan is strategically located between Annapolis' beautiful historic district and the primary hotel area, making it an easy stroll for both locals and visitors. Â Nice job with that! Â The atmosphere is trendy and attractive, and the natural light that comes through the big windows in the morning make it a great place to relax and enjoy their delicious food and coffee.
The coffee is supplied by Caffe Pronto, which is by far the best tasting coffee roaster in the region. Â I tried the Flat White, which is a strong Australian espresso-based drink recommended by the owner, who happens to have an Australian accent. Â I like strong coffee but something about this drink wasn't what I was expecting- perhaps it was the fact that I didn't put any sugar in it. Â It was good, better than Vegemite anyway, but I think I'll opt for the Cap next time instead.
The owner introduced himself to us and mentioned that before he opened his other restaurant in town, Tsunami, he had considered opening a place in Ballard, Washington. Â Score!
It looks like a tremendous dinner location as well. Â It has an attractive rooftop dining area with nice views and a microbrew list featuring a few of my favorite West Coast locals.
Went to Metropolitan for drinks only so I can't vouch for the dining experience. Â As a place to have a drink and socialize it's a winner. Â There is a second floor bar with seating area and dining area. Â On the 3rd floor there is a pretty tight rooftop lounge that is half under cover. There are outdoor heaters set up for cool weather.
The decor and vibe is modern minimalism. Â The service was friendly and attentive. Â Def. a place to which I would return.
I first tried Metropolitan on it's opening night, and loved it--it was beautiful, open, airy, and with a rooftop bar (something that more places in Annapolis should have and don't). I also decided that it was far too trendy and modern to survive as anything other than a gay bar (a la Tsunami, owned by the same people).
Fortunatley, I was wrong.
Where most bars in Annapolis are your traditional dark, wooden, closed off Irish pubs, Metropolitan is bright and hip. Â It exudes vibrance, is sleek, streamlined, cheery, and hip, something that is fairly new to the Annapolis area. Â
Great for when you want a break from the dark, dank, smokey bar you've been sitting in all afternoon.
