Waiter was a bit arrogant. I had salad nicoise and it was very average.  Artichokes good. French onion soup decent. Crepes watery. Had to send back and reorder. Not as impressed as I should have been.

If you like French bistro cuisine, this is a great spot to check out.  The environment and decor are great, and the food is terrific.  I've had the onion soup several times and it is among the best I've ever had anywhere and at any price.  The duck l'orange is very good and during my most recent visit I had the skate wing special which was outstanding.  Definitely add Miramar to your to-do list.

This place is an absolute knock off of Pastis and Bathazar in NYC...  It looks the same in every way... I'm talking IDENTICAL. Even a lot of the same menu items... I like this place only because it feels so familiar... But i dislike that they ripped off an original..

I have frequented Miramar over the years and I always enjoyed the food, drinks and atmosphere.  The service always seemed genuine and helpful and I like the menu changes over the years.  That being said, I dined this week and was disappointed in a few things. The menu change did not offer the variety it once did, and truthfully the prices are fairly high.  The service was over attentive to a point of being intrusive; example taking drinks away before they are empty, picking up the check while we are still at the table-after paying with a credit card.  Like the server had to check what the tip was before we got up from the table.  That seemed so rude to us.  And on the topic of  atmosphere/service, it felt remote, not personal, not genuine, and maybe a bit pretentious?   It's a bummer, because this restaurant has always felt "real".
On to the food, it was good, not outstanding but good, and I appreciate the olive bread, it's delicious!  In the past we would of sampled an appetizer, oysters and and entree, but the prices are so steep, it discouraged us from ordering like we used to.  They do a nice job on cocktails as well, and those seemed normally priced, $9 for a cosmo, etc.
I do not feel the need to return, which is sad considering we have loved this restaurant for years.

What a terrific place!  Great food and very, very gracious and professional service.  My husband and I dropped by for a drink on New Year's on our way (so we thought) to dinner.  When we arrived at "that other place" for dinner we found that they were not offering their regular menu (as I had been promised when I reserved our table).  My husband is vegetarian, and there was virtually nothing on the "other place's" menu for him.

    Miramar to the rescue!

We returned to the restaurant and Gabriel said "of course we can fit you in!".  My husband had a delightful dinner, with many things to choose from, and I had a nice steak.  Nice wine list, too!  A number of people took care of various parts of dinner (wine, food, etc.) and every one of them was very professional, and very, very pleasant.

Thanks to everyone at Miramar for a terrific and memorable dinner.  We're fans, and will be back soon!

The short end of the review:  this is the kind of North Shore establishment you bring your wife/mistress/girlfriend to in order to show off the fact that you can drop $200 on a dinner for two.  You are guaranteed to be served food that will be nothing more than a backdrop to your level of disposable income.

Being a self-confessed cheapskate with the salary to match, I decided to pop in here for a Saturday afternoon lunch.  I had been here before to meet a friend.  At that time I nibbled on an appetizer and thought it was OK.  I had the French onion soup which was made with a good quality cheese, but enough salt to make a cigar butt taste good.  I decided to give Miramar another go.  I had a good food week so why not treat myself.  The soup was good.  The bread was... not cold, but not room temperature either.  It was crusty, which was a plus.  But the butter came in pre-packaged containers.  Really?  In a place where some of the appetizers are $20?  Food service butter?  Right out of the refrigerator food service butter?  The salad was nothing special, and for a vinaigrette dressing, there wasn't much of a kick.

My main course was the gnocchi.  Well-enough prepared, but nothing amazing in terms of flavor.  It was something I could have made myself at home.  Being a dumpling, the sauce should really stand out on the dish and add something.  But it didn't.  It was all just kinda there on my plate.  I also expect gnocchi to be a bit softer than mine was.  But I didn't say anything, which I'll get to in a moment.

The food was A-OK, nothing I couldn't have made myself at home.  In keeping with the rather bland palate of the North Shore, Miramar does its job in making sure spices and flavors remain an exotic, alien custom.

The service was attentive to the point of being uncomfortable.  I'm not some French aristocrat.  I don't need to be doted on.  I just want to eat my meal.  Check in from time to time to see how things are.  Not every three minutes.  I was afraid if I said the gnocchi seemed a bit undercooked that I would have caused a commotion, and the place would resemble a Monty Python sketch with the chef commiting hari-kari at my table.  Don't refill my water glass because it is 1/8 empty.  That may be how the upper-class elite of the North Shore likes to be treated.  And since this place is really for that kind of person and not someone like me, perhaps I shouldn't complain.

My standard bearer in Chicago-area bistros is Yoshi's Cafe.  If Yoshi's is the Radiohead of bistros:  bold, edgy, creative, and risk-taking, Miramar is the Dave Matthews of bistros:  keep it predictable, put it in a nice package, but try not to offend anyone, please,

I'd like to give two stars, but I'm feeling generous today and nothing there was bad.  Nothing was great either.  For the price I paid for my meal, I want to be blown away, not go home wondering if the sauce they used came out of a jar.

Nah, I'm going with two stars.  I still say if you want a great bistro experience in North America, you have to go to New York, New Orleans, San Francisco, or Montreal.  Miramar does nothing to dispel the notion that Chicago is just not a bistro town.

Have been a fan of this place for several years .  Always excellent service and the food never disappoints.  I am withholding one star due to our last visit.  The mussels ( the memory of  which drew us here last night), were a bit of a let down in that they lacked the flavor we remember from last visits. Tasted like something anyone could have cranked out..the steak au poivre was excellent, as usual, as was the profiteroles. And yes, this place is $$$, but well worth it, esp, if it saves me a drive downtown. I wish they had more Belgian selections, but the wine list fairly decent.  Cozy tables, can get quite loud, but that is part of the fun and charm.  Be sure to visit in the summer, sit outside and order a mojito.

Love. Love. Love.  Quaint and romantic setting.  The food is always the best. Typically we do several bottles of wine and oysters and a fish dish.  It's a great place for a nice romantic dinner with your significant others.  Ask for the olive bread!

The food was mediocre at best. We tried the pate, the lamb and the snow crabs. I was expecting much more and it is expensive for what they serve.

I have been a regular visitor to the restaurants owned by Mr. Gabriel Viti (Gabriels and Mirimar) for over 15 years and I have never been disappointed by the care and attention his staff provide for the dining experience.  Service is the hallmark of an experience at a restaurant owned by Gabriel Viti and he takes it seriously.   As a customer and diner, you are their number one concern and it shows in the small details.  Normal operation procedure at a Gabe's restaurant is to open the bathroom door for a patron as a courtesy, to make sure a fresh napkin replaces the just used one when a diner gets up to use a restroom or may leave the table for a moment.  Diners are made welcome from the moment they enter the restaurant to the moment they leave without ever feeling as though anyone is hovering or obsessive in their care.

Now on to the food.  Without OUTSTANDING FOOD!! the service would be of little significance.  But the food is incredible.  The escargot is unbelievable.  When I was there at lunch today, I simply closed my eyes when the appetizer was carefully and cheerfully delivered and smelled the aroma for 2 minutes.  Garlic, hot olive oil, and succulent escargot awaited my taste buds and the bread dipping is a must.  Though, I am typically not a bread eater, I could not help myself.  For an entree, I ordered the bouillabaisse soup and was further honored with another flavor filled combination that once again lead me to just take a moment and smell the tantalizing arrangement of herbs and flavor Gabriel had assembled in this soup.  To finish my meal I enjoy a hot cup of espresso.

People from all over Chicago are treated to something very special when they go to Mirimar.  Whether for a lunch, a dinner, or a special event, they are set up to handle anything a diner needs.  You can always count on Gabriel to make it special.  And an added bonus of working with Gabriel is knowing his intention and his aspirations are in service to others.  He has set out on numerous adventures around the world including climbing all the great peaks of the world, Mt. Everest included.  In doing so, he raised thousands of dollars for several very worthy causes.  Gabriel is a man who lives his life very intentionally and this comes through in the restaurant experience at  Mirimar.

Saturday, October 20...the PREMIER night of the Highwood Pumpkin Festival.  Pumpkins lined the streets and hunger lined my belly.  Ashley and I dined at the little Mexican restaurant next door, but I kind of wish we ate with the rest of my family at Miramar.

The table my family was seated at was for 4 people, right next to the bar.  We walked in and told the hostess that we were with "them," and they quickly brought over two chairs to accommodate us.  It worked out nicely, we weren't squeezed in at all.

The first thing you notice at Miramar is the fancy French decor, and the scary awesome candlesticks on every table.  Each candle is about 2ft tall with gobs and gobs of dried wax running down.  It's very Edgar Allen Poe meets Beauty and the Beast.

My family ordered duck, lamb, and gnocchi.  Ashley and I just had a couple drinks.  All of the food was delicious.  The ordered a mussels appetizer, which had a real fishy smell, and a rubbery texture.  So, my family sent it back and it was taken off the bill.  The owner came over and, after multiple apologies from my family, informed us that his job is to "make sure we have a great meal."  It was very nice of him, he was sincere about making sure our meal was the best it could be.

The staff is very attentive and willing to do anything to make your experience at Miramar top notch.

I'd like to come here for a date night....actually, I WILL come here for a date night.

Really cool little French Bistro.  Also visited during the Highwood Pumpkin Festival and I'm glad I did.  We didn't eat here, but stopped in for a couple drinks and would love to go back to check out their food.  The atmosphere in this place is awesome, laid back, but classy.

Came here with my husband a little while ago for a week night dinner when we were craving some french food but didn't feel like making the drive all the way to the city and all I have to say is this place used to be much, much better and now the hype has definitely faded. The place has a cute french bistro feel to it with mirrors along the walls, very European and adorable. Now onto service, we felt overwhelmed, like we were being spied on in one of James Bond movies, I mean it was annoying and a lil freaky, it's like we are fine, I don't like to be over asked how my fries are, once is enough. We kinda didn't get to enjoy a nice relaxing meal as there were constantly servers, bus boys, i mean everyone coming up to us asking us how our meal is going and clearing things off. Not a fan of that.

Onto the food, it was not bad, but not amazing either. The calamari was eh, I was expecting better but then again maybe we should have gotten the escargot here. We did get the burger with cheese and that was probably the best part of the meal, it was good, not outstanding, but we left thinking happy thoughts about it. Now onto the dessert, we HAD to get the chocolate terrene and it was moist, yummy, but once again, not amazing. It was alright, but I've definitely had better. Would I be back? probably not as the food used to be better or maybe my tastes have gotten more refined.

After living in the area for one year we finally decided to stop in for lunch. The soup/sandwich combo looked good and was fairly affordable for this restaurant. Even though it was an extremely slow day, it took a long time to receive our lunches. The french onion soup was really something special and might be worth a trip just for that. I wish I could say the same about my cuban sandwich and my wife's pesto sandwich. both were small, not very exciting, and left us wanting, especially for the prices of the lunch. We've heard mixed reviews from others, but the bistro always seemed inviting. I wish that the food matched the atmosphere.

When we went to visit my husband's sister in Chicago I wanted to get to spend time as adults (without the kids) so we decided to all go out to dinner. Miramar was what we decided on since it wasn't too far from the house.

I had the macaroni gratin with bacon. Absolutely decadent. If we do ever make it back the better option would be to share this with the table or my dining partner as the portion is rather big. My sister-in-law ordered the Croque Monsieur. If my love affair with eggs had started at this point, I may have ordered the Croque Madame, however not being the biggest fan of ham, I stuck to my favorite.

It's an adorable bistro in a relatively quiet neighborhood. Highwood definitely has a winner on their hands.

The three star review makes no sense to me. I love this place. I went for a work dinner and it could not have been a lovelier, more delicious meal. The staff is fantastic. I had one of the best meals involving seafood of my life (and I grew up on the Gulf of Mexico). The dover sole almondine is amazing. The desserts were delicious. I love it here!

Was at a private function at Miramar,  they had a buffet set up, so I was able to get a good sampling of their food, which brought me back a week later..

Had an 8PM reservation and we were seated at 8PM...perfect.  The service in this place is top notch, the food is also just as great.  I had the french onion soup which I thought was excellent. For my main course I had Blue Cheese Steak. That was good, not the best steak I have ever had, but decent enough.  The table had an order of olives, which was tasty. Beverages were on par with any other place.

The space in the place was comfortable and the ambiance was nice.  I even liked the common sink for their  bathroom setup.

    I will be back!

Just a quick update.... had dinner at Miramar with the bf and his family on Monday, and they have the absolute BEST french onion soup I've ever had in my LIFE.

THE BEST.  Hands down.  Gruyere... LOTS of it.  LOTS of onions.  Perfectly bubbly.

    Gabe - you WIN.

Nice atmosphere, and great design with authentic old tiles on the walls. Very nice ambiance, and somewhat authentic, though this is the North Shore which is anything "but"... The host was very friendly, somewhat funny, and helpful. Waiters were professional and attentive. Bartender was nice, friendly, made good drinks, but a little off (probably because she was overworked). Food was very good, not great. Good presentation. Some things were either overly tasty or too salty, some others didnt have much flavor such as the steak. I would definitely go back probably during a quieter nite during the week.

Miramar is a great french bistro.  I've now been at least a dozen times and have tried a wide range of the menu items.  The service is usually top notch, and many times Gabe (the owner) is there.

I'd highly recommend starting with some fresh shellfish (you can mix and match or pick a standard set - from shrimp and crab to oysters) or the escargots.  The warm bread they bring to the table is great, also.  If you like french onion soup - you'll love this one here.

For entrees, the steak frites are fantastic.  For lunch, the steak sandwich is great too.

Profiteroles for dessert - very good pastry with ice cream inside and chocolate sauce.

Usually the staff is very responsive.  Especially the backup staff that replaces bread and fills water.  Sitting outside on a nice day is great, but I've typically seen slower service this way.  The inside is pretty cool, but the candles are weird and make some of the table space awkward.

Overall love Miramar, but it is on the higher price range.

We had a late Sunday lunch, what a surprise to find Miramar open. We ordered the best mussels in garlic and white wine broth I had in Chicago area. Great bohemian Cuban- French style. The service was also very friendly and helpful.

I've come here with my riding buddies during a couple cruises up Sheridan Road. The servers are friendly, smiling and joking as they welcome us bikers. They are quick to offer to get what you need.

There aren't really vegan options on the menu. They kindly made spinach sauteed in olive oil for me. I feel the beer list is severely lacking, but maybe that just isn't their focus. The pricing is rather expensive for both food and drinks. At least there is a free basket of bread to munch on.

I wouldn't make this a destination, but it's convenient for a quick stop along the route.

I think this place is great.  I've been there twice for dinner.  It's very romatic, and perfect for a special occasion.  I think the prices are a little high, but then again it's so beautiful it's worth it.  Highly recommend for a date.

I was so excited to try this place! It is beautiful and everyone who works there is so friendly! If the food was as good as the people are nice and decor is classic, it would be a full 5 stars!

I ordered a chicken pesto press with some kind of Asian cream soup. It came with shoestring fries. The whole plate was a little greasy and the soup was only a yellow frothy cream substance. The person I was with ordered a cheeseburger, cooked medium, and the pre-formed, pre-packaged patty was RAW in the middle. Come on now, raw? So we asked for it to be more medium than raw and they took it back. I was thinking she would get a new burger and it would be fresh and well cooked this time. What they did was put the same patty with the cheese on the grill, finished cooking it, put another piece of cheese on top to melt the bite marks and put it back on the plate to bring out with the half eaten shoestring fries. I was in shock. This place had such high hopes with the decor and friendliness.

The server did take the burger off the bill and was very kind about the issue. He offered us a cup of delicious, freshly brewed coffee, and we were encouraged to stay and relax for as long as we liked. That helped us leave calm and relaxed. Too bad about the food.

The two times I've been to Miramar, I've had a wonderful time. Unlike some reviewers, I do not find the ubiquitous handshakes offensive or "weird"--and I think it's pretty lame to deduct a star or two just because you feel like the host's gesture isn't "genuine."

Anyway, last night my boyfriend and I had the snow crab claws, which are always delicious, accompanied by some Kumamoto oysters that they had on special. The oysters were piquant and fresh, and served with a delicious vinager/cucumber water. For our entrees we had the steak with blue cheese sauce and the linguine with clams. Both entrees were executed perfectly. My boyfriend's steak was tender and juicy and the blue cheese sauce was to die for. My linguine and clams were some of the best I have ever had. When we finished the clams and had polished off the pasta we sopped up the rest of the sauce with our bread--that is always a good sign that the dish is delicious.

As for the service, we were perfectly attended to. Our waiter was friendly and helpful without being obtrusive. During the meal some wax from the candle dripped into my glass of wine and they gladly gave me a fresh refill free of charge. When we got the bill it was cheaper than we expected. We will definitely be coming here again.

I agree with Nicole. This "Dave R." dude sounds like a tool. He hates the handshakes so much he has been going there for years. Makes a lot of sense. But he gave T-Mobile five stars, so you can tell he really takes his reviews seriously.

Amazing food at a great value, offset, of-course, by the deliciously tempting shellfish. But what can you do.. Love the atmosphere. Where else can you see such decor? Service is great, too. It's a diamond in the rough, and is a bit of a ride, but you aren't paying Chicago taxes up there so the drive pays for itself really.. Will be going back soon!

Despite being over 1,400 miles from the last believably authentic Cuban cuisine I enjoyed, Miramar fits the bill.

I don't know why it's so hard to do a decent Cuban sandwich. Some places use Ciabatta bread, some places use dill pickles, and others serve a bizarre ham-free version that would confuse even perpetually-lost Castro.

So, how's the Cuban sandwich here? It's pretty good. Admittedly not a traditional Cuban as it omits pork, but it was tasty. The bread was good and not overly browned. The ham was flavorful (though another slice or two wouldn't have hurt the sandwich) and the cheese pretty good.

The shoestring-style frites were really tasty, much to the dismay of my waistline. Don't sully them with ketchup.

Service here is spectacular. I was greeted with a smile and...a handshake? Who does that anymore? My jacket was taken and...hung up elsewhere, not just thrown on the back of my chair. When I went to retrieve it later, staff instantly intervened and helped it on. Thanks for a healthy dose of class to start the day! Even small stuff, like refilling water, is done with a folded napkin (and not of the paper variety) held strategically to absorb errant splashes. Nice touch -- I'm fairly sure last week I had a water refill where more water ended up on the table than in the glass.

The decor is pretty awesome. I've always wanted to go to Cuba (and the DPRK) because it's the easiest way to step back into the mid-fifties without Doc Brown's Libyan friends getting upset about that little Plutonium gag.

Everything here is engineered to have period appearance, from the never-cleaned candlesticks to the communal sink area between the gender-specific restrooms. Maybe I pay too much attention, but I also had an "ah!" moment when I noticed the full-size, er, standing porcelain receptacle in the guys room. Intentional or not, you sure don't see those too often.

I'm looking forward to coming here for dinner and trying the onion soup that seems to garner universal praise from the regulars.

    Interesting space.
Didn't really get the French / Cuban thing until I read the 'About' section on their web site.
    Service was attentive and helpful.
    Atmosphere is pleasant.
But I need to try another dish next time, though.  Cheese and truffle ravioli was not great.  Corn soup was tasty, though.

On my last Chicago trip, my BFF and I found ourselves here because we were waiting to catch the train back to Lake Forest and decided that we were suddenly dying of hunger.

I spotted Miramar across the train tracks and asked if she had ever eaten there, to which she replied, "Yeah, and the last time I was there Kenny Rogers was having a b-day party ."

Well, if it's good enough for the gambler, it's good enough for me! We had a few martinis, the artichoke terrine app and the Truffle Ravioli, which was surprisingly light! The food and drinks were all around delicious and the atmosphere is pretty cool. I love any place with tarnished mirrors on the wall and dripping candelabras on every table.

Miramar is now on my list of Chicago-area faves!

In Chicago, visiting my daughter and her family, she requested Miramar Bistro for a special occasion dinner. We got an early reservation to accommodate our (4-month old) grandson's feeding and sleeping schedule.

When we arrived for our 6:30 table, the restaurant was almost empty. But if filled up fast. I wouldn't say that Miramar is ideal for family dining. But we did see several tables with children, at least for the early evening dining.

One of the evening specials was foie gras. We got one order to split among the four of us, just enough for one or two bites each. It was served with a citrus segment (a small blood orange, I think), diced mango, and banana water.

We ordered two salads to share at the table. One was a mixed greens with fried goat cheese. The first unpleasant surprise was the presence of sliced beets. My wife hates beets. We almost sent it back. But my son-in-law said he'd eat them and we convinced my wife that the beets hadn't touched the part of the salad that she ate. (More about beets in a minute.) The other salad was one of the evening specials. It was endive with a citrus dressing and blue cheese. This was by far the better choice.

Each of us ordered a different entree. I had another evening special, braised lamb shanks. It was served on couscous which was the perfect way to sop up all the delicious saucy and the fabulous, fork-tender shank meat. There also was a spoonful of ratatouille that was very good.

My son-in-law ordered a duo of rack of lamb and beef short ribs. They were served atop a bed of pureed potatoes; it also had a fabulous sauce but he said it was a little too balsamic for his taste.

My daughter had Dover sole almondine. Her fish was lightly sauteed and served with a lemon-caper sauce. The fish was accompanied by several spears of green beans.

My wife had another evening special - halibut topped with lobster meat and a creamy sauce. It was served on a wild rice pilaf. When her plate was placed in front of her, there was a crisp fried beet right on top. The offending plate was whisked away and reappeared without the dreaded beet. The meal was delicious and very rich.

There were several tempting desserts on the table. But my grandson was starting to get fussy, so we closed our check and left. By then, the restaurant was brimming with people.

I really liked the ambiance of the restaurant. The service was good. Attentive and accommodating, but not particularly personable or friendly.

As some other Yelpers have commented, it is a bit expensive. But I'd definitely consider it again for another special occasion.

I've been four times (twice for lunch and twice for dinner) and all I can remember is the soup and the price. I don't mind spending a lot of money on a great meal, but Miramar is average at best.

Throughout my visits, I have had their salads, sandwiches, pasta and entree and walked away unimpressed. I can't even remember what I ordered, and that in itself says a lot.  The only highlights for me are the Asian squash soup (seasonal) and the french onion soup, which are both absolutely outstanding. My husband, a lover of Cuban cuisine, was very disappointed in the Cuban sandwich.

The ambiance is very open and inviting, with tiles from a NYC subway on the walls both in and outside of the restaurant. Just try not to imagine tiles from the Chicago el adorning a high-end restaurant. That thought might be enough to send you home to open up a can of soup and call it a day.

Put your money and taste buds to better use and visit one of the other many excellent restaurants in Highwood.

We wanted to watch the Chicago Bears game (even though we know chances of a win were slim)

We ended up at Miramar since our good friend Carmine suggested that they had incredible appetizers. That they did!

We ordered Escargot, Bruschetta, Oysters & Prosciutto. Each item was very tasty and filling. We were filled to the brim and very pleased with our meal.

The atmosphere I can tell would be nice to have a normal dinner there, altho we sat up at the bar. Looks like it would be very nice to take a date there. I recommend.

Great atmosphere, okay-food, but they charge you more because it's in a stupid-expensive neighborhood. While it's a good business plan, it's seems obnoxious to the middle class worker bee (me).

So if you're into dropping 18 on a salad for lunch, disregard my pricing concerns, because the food here is good, while I can't remember what I had here, or how it compared to everything else.

With Mirimar, what comes to mind is the story about some hip, cool, gangster-type (which in the Northshore, just really means you own commercial real estate), you get to have your dinner in the wine cellar downstairs, and the owner will pop his $500 bottles of red for you personally.

    Meh.

Secretly, wearing an Armani tux, sporting an Omega, smoking Aficionado's pick of the month, and admiring my fresh Ukranian catch of the week sipping her $125 glass of Pinot in that cellar does intrigue me...

If this is my wife reading this, please disregard the last paragraph (monkeys on keyboard)

I have been to Mirimar a number of times, twice for parties in the back room and once for dinner.  The food had a more Cuban flare for the parties than the general menu.  The restaurant is not cheap, but the food has always been good and the staff incredible.

This place will not be my standard Friday night restaurant, but it will stay on my list of places to go for special occasions.

Miramar Bistro is a nice restaurant where you pay for the experience.  I was there for a late dinner during the week. Decor and ambience are bistro-ish in a rustic wood and plaster theme. Lots of tables and fairly attentive service. Food is competently prepared and presented. But the prices are pretty steep for dining that doesn't knock my socks off.

Scott R. hit it on the head with his observation that this is a place for the "look at me" crowd. Read K.K.'s review -- if you think you would like to have dinner with a room full of people speaking in that style, Miramar is the place for you. But if you aren't interested in the society pages, think about where else you could go.

This is one of Gabe Viti's many, many restaurants; even after Pancho Viti closed, he seems to own most of Highwood and Highland Park.
The restaurant has a pseudo artsy look with old mirrors and candles for decoration; it gets noisy on the weekends and seems to be a hang out for the "look at me" crowd.
That being said, the food is quite good; he has some good bistro food like good quality pate, bouillabaise, confit, and steak with frites; the fish special is reliable; good wines by the glass.  He has a chocolate desert with pistachios that shouldn't be missed.
Gabe has a reputation for yelling at his staff and I have witnessed it; when he's not there which is most of the time (he's a block and a half away at Gabe's) you get good service.

The previous review is surprising - this is a privately owned upscale French cafe / bistro... why would you assume "soda refills are free"?  Also, the menu lists prices (and is posted outside the restaurant as well), so there should be no surprise about the bill.

Anyway, I had an excellent dining experience at Miramar.  Three of arrived around 9 pm on a weeknight, pleased to find a restaurant that was still serving dinner (so much of the suburbs locks up tight by 8 pm).  The atmosphere is unpretentious, warm and inviting.  The simple wooden tables have wonderous wax towers made of candle drippings.

Our service was friendly and attentive - our waiter hung our coats for us, described the specials, and took our drink order immediately.  I ordered a large bottle of sparkling water which our waiter decided to bring out in a champagne bucket to ensure it was properly cool.

I decided to order the lamb shank ($21) and was amazed at the size and tenderness of the lamb - I just used my fork to separate pieces from the bone.  It has a light sauce that seemed to accentuate the lamb without imparting any strong flavors of its own.  Three of us shared the profiteroles for dessert ($7) which were rich and delicious.

Overall, this is a wonderful addition to Lake County and a great place to go for a nice leisurely dinner or late night dessert and coffee with a date.

I went there for lunch with someone and what we had was not extravagant by any means. My friend had a Grilled Chicken Caesar Salad and I had the chicken pesto with red peppers. Our bill was over $65.00+ dollars and we were taken back by it. They charged us $4.00 for soda and refills. So $16.00 of our bill was just for soda!!!! I have never been to a restaurant that charges for refills. Maybe they needed to make up some business since the restaurant was pretty much empty. I said that to our waitress and she said, "we'll we do charge for refills on pop". I will never go back. There are plenty of good restaurants in Highwood that won't stick it to you for soda....

update. I think people missed my point that I went here for LUNCH. The food was mediocre. I've been to upscale French Bistro's, this is not one of them. Better restaurants in Highwood
