Pros: The best pizza in a city saturated with pizza restaurants; Great mixed drinks.
Cons: Painfully, painfully slow service, at least on a Friday night (when I've only been). I can feel the anger and frustration from the other tables because of the slow service. Trade in the iPad for a pen and paper so that it doesn't take an awkwardly long time to place an order, and please staff more than one waitperson for the weekend... the current one is overworked, overwhelmed, and probably unfairly undertipped due to poor management.
Despite the good food, I can't recommend The Modern Life in its current form.
Not sure where the other reviewers ate, but when I went to "The Mod" last week for dinner and drinks with friends, I had a totally different experience. First was the shock that the only offerings on the menu were 12", $12 pizzas. Now PBO has no shortage of good pizza joints, including John's Pizza, 200 yards away - had my friends not already ordered, I'd have left and gone there. But we stayed. Mistake #1. Mistake #2 was asking for one of the pizzas to be made without one of the ingredients on half. You see, we had my five-year old grandson along... And rather than picking off the ingredient he didn't like, it made sense to me to ask for it not to be put on. But no, the slightly ditzy waitress says, we can't do that. Why not, I ask. Well, because the pizzas are handmade and not completely round. HUH? Doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out if a pizza is handmade, that's the IDEAL time to leave off an ingredient. Mistake #3 was asking the Manager (who turned out to be the owner) to resolve the issue, under the assumption that he actually cared about the customers. Wrong again! His answer was that if my grandson didn't like all the toppings on one of the pizzas, order him a pizza of his own.  Problem was, the kid just wanted a plain cheese pizza, not a 'margarita pizza'. Can't get there without leaving off the basil leaves. So ... My conclusion... The pizzas were not that great; the beer was cold; the service ok; definitely not kid friendly; and the owner must have gone to the Verizon school of customer service. I still don't get why it's called a 'deli' when there wasn't any deli-like items on the menu... Maybe the lunch  experience is better, but I'll never know, because the owner's lack of  consideration and arrogant attitude put me off this place for life.
Review Source:I'm so excited to have The Mod in town, everything that I've been missing in Pittsboro has been fulfilled. The Mod has really good bagels, yummy deli sandwiches (with Boars Head meat, not yucky mystery meat,) homemade soups and really fresh salads with housemade dressings. I love that everything is fresh and uncomplicated. The staff is really nice, they play good music, and it has a cool peaceful vibe, a really nice place to hang out and do some work. Â Can't wait until they open in the evenings for drinks and wood fired pizza!
Review Source:The Mod just opened up in Pittsboro and I totally suggest that you give it a try. Â It's located directly across from the new courthouse just south of the circle. Â They serve bagels, bagel sandwiches (eggs, bacon, etc), and pastries. Â There is also a selection of coffees, teas and lattes. Â Ask for the Cubano coffee if you think you can handle the caffeine (my new addiction).
There are sandwiches, soups and salads. You will see your normal favorites on the menu (italian, roast beef, etc), but also some different kinds like the "Tim's full of Bologna". They use Boars head meat and cheese and the sandwiches seem stuffed generously!
I'm vegan and was pleased to see that they offer a roasted veggie and also a portabella sandwich, both of which were very tasty.
The salads are big and seem thoughtfully crafted. Â The vegetables are fresh and appealing (you know what I'm saying, not gross and wilted).
I can't wait to see what the lounge offerings are like (pizza and tapas/small plate items) and bar.
