This Shangri-la homey cabin and spacious outdoor patio/fire pit that is dog-friendly is going to be my new home-away-from home. I've been there twice in the past few days and I'm a busy mom of two working part-time. Monty's is literally five minutes from my house, and yesterday I told the affable, sharply intelligent owner Monty and his beautiful, kind bartender Lisa that I will be a "bar swan" (as opposed to bar fly) as I'll want to come there all the time. Â Since it's getting to be gorgeous weather I'll sit in their relaxing patio area. Â Monty's is open early in the morning (i.e. by 10AM usually, I believe - hours are posted above) and that's where I plan to write my book (yep, I got a bona fide publishing contract two weeks ago and am now on deadline) in their lovely courtyard as the weather warms up. Â I am having my 43rd girls-only party there next month and I cannot wait. Â
Monty's is very clean, intimate but not too claustrophobic, as there are several rooms, two separate bathrooms (one for men, one for women) and I felt great and welcomed the moment I walked in the door. Â That's a *very* rare feeling for me to experience in a so-called "dive" bar. Â Plus they have wi-fi for my laptop so I can do research for my book "Birth of a New Brain: My Ultimately Medication-Free Recovery from Postpartum Bipolar Disorder" with a foreword by Britain's first female neurosurgeon Dr. Liz Miller, author of "Mood Mapping". Â I had one, just one, tasty margarita made with kindness by the great Monty himself. Â I will be spreading the good word about this place to all my friends. Â I am so happy I finally went there after living down the street from it for 7 years! Â It is a dream-come-true for me to have gone there and gotten the Monty's experience. Yay Monty's - where are the t-shirt and bumpersticker???? Â Sign me up!
MONTY'S Log Cabin  BAR 5755 Hwy 9, Felton, CA 95018, (831) 335-9969 - No web site
Q-Tips say:- A fun, tacky dive bar and the only place we have ever visited (and we have been many places in the USA and Europe) where a local asked us where we were from,  and PAID FOR OUR DRINKS.  If you are in the area, MONTY'S is a must see. You haven't experienced Felton until you've posted up at Montys Log Cabin bar. Super bartenders, pool table, in a real rustic cabin with plenty of taxidermy. There is an outside area which is awesome during the day for chilling in the sun with a cold beer, or at night while sitting by the fire pit chatting it up with other bar patrons. The bartenders are quick witted and always up for a good time. The locals have tons of great stories and are worth talking to. Ladies room even has a padded toilet seat.  A biker's paradise. A fun place. Mrs. Q says: A fun place but probably not where she would suggest young women go to meet - Mr. Right. Also, if you  drink more than usual, don't expect to find a hotel/motel nearby - there aren't any.  You could drive down the road to "FERN RIVER" but they are usually booked for the weekends/or full weeks at a time. PS stop by the BIG FOOT MUSEUM down the road.  Both Monty's and the Big Foot Museum are a must see and do, at least once in your lifetime.
This bar is awesome. Cheap drinks, outside fire pit, indoor bowling on sunday nights. You can bring your dogs if you want as well. Not to mention really down to earth people and gluten free beer. The bar tender on Friday nights is super awesome and so is the one on Saturday nights too. Don't get me started on that Sunday night bartender that runs the sunday night bowling league there. Just kldding, she is pretty much awesome! Very cool overall atmosphere. If you're into awesome people, no drama, and dancing drunken shenenigans then this is your bar.
Review Source:Totally kick a$$ bar! I was a little disappointed that they don't have a coat check but besides that the place is pretty cool. Killer bartenders, especially the ginger, good prices cool a$$ people that hang there and just a chill place. Doesn't take long to feel at home there. Monteys a a really cool dude too and had a good time gettin to know him. They need a bigger selection of slayer songs on the jukebox but other than that.. Pretty solid place.. I'll definitely be goin back.
Review Source:As far as dive bars go, 5 stars here. After seeing two separate reviews mentioning the David Lynch feel here I had to come by and see for myself. It was actually was less creepy then one might suspect. Everyone we met here was very nice from the staff to patrons which were mostly locals but some tourists passing through.
The outdoor area is dog friendly and my boy loved it! I liked the fire pit outside too. Good prices on beers too, no gouging here.
Don't be scurred homie, it's Felton!
After reading about Monty's for some time (and living in SoCal) I finally managed to get there on Christmas Day, taking my son-in-law with me. Â Lawdy, Lawdy, what a temple of wonderment...and with beer backs. Â My only negative note is that I wish there more options for sleeping nearby - dangerous to spend too much time at Monty's and then drive down the mountain to SCruz. Â Oh well, life's full of challenges and that's one of the better ones. Â A classic.

Plenty of parking out front or across the street.
Let's do the time warp again!
If you are looking for a friendly clientele, that has an opinion on everything from medicinal marijuana to making Santa Cruz nuclear free, you're in for a treat.
Not that everyone will have their teeth or sponsor their favorite perfume essence, you will have a Guinness to sip from while you sit in the outside patio area beside a chiminea beneath the stately redwoods.
Simply come relax and enjoy the atmosphere. And the occasional friendly dog the locals are known to bring by as well.
I love this place! It's reminiscent of a David Lynch film... where you can park your bike outside, or bring your dog in. The bartenders are cute & not stuck-up, and the patrons are one-of-a-kind. Leave your uptight ego at the door, and hang out with locals who know how to relax and have a good time.
...Just watch out for the one-eyed jack! ;-)
Okay, it's fun to take a dive once in a while. But let me tell ya, you're gonna need your swimming trunks because this place is a REAL dive. Â If you like toothless old men leering at you, porn out in plain view, and signs that read "it's not going to suck itself," then this is the place for you. Otherwise, ladies, don't go alone...
Review Source:Okay, so NOW I get what there's to like about a dive bar. Â When a place like this exists that isn't too crowded you can drop on in, listen to some Hank Williams while you shoot pool in this olde timey building with a claustrophobically low roof and hang out in a yard that has fire pits, that's right, mother-f-ing fire pits! Â Then when the night is done and you've enjoyed the bars selection of liquors and beers that are much more expansive than your own collection you can walk on home on wobbly legs. Â Or better yet head over to Quik Stop. Â Together these two locations form South Felton's nightlife district. Â Or are you some sort of uppity Don Quixote/Safeway type who's too good for us good ol' boys of the south side?
