I have now eaten at Mo's in Carmel twice. Â The food is just ok. Â If I am going to spend that kind of money I would much rather go to Ruth's where we have never been disappointed with anything. Â
The service is Mo's is horrible. Â Maybe they are still trying to work the kinks out but both times I have been there it has been pretty bad. Â It took forever for the waiter to come to order our drinks. Â This is not your typical steakhouse where you have professional waiters/waitresses. Â There is a room off to the side where we were seated, we were a table of 10. Â We felt like we weren't even in the restaurant, we were off to the side and it was a weird feeling. Â The restaurant was so loud that I noticed there was a table with 4 older people that were literally holding their ears. Â I felt so bad for them.
The worst part of the evening was when we went to the bar for a drink after dinner. Â It took FOREVER for us to get our drinks. Â While we were waiting we asked the piano player to play a particular song. Â He told us that he already played that song. Â He told us that mgmt told him that he couldn't repeat songs. Â When we told him we thought that was a stupid rule he said he thought there were a lot worse things. Â He was such a jerk that I walked away. Â My friend continued to talk to him about the music and he proceeded to ask her if she was a dancer. Â He was completely condescending and completely rude!!!! Â We did speak to mgmt about him and they told us that there was no such rule about not playing a song twice so, go figure.
That will probably be our last time at Mo's. Â It's a shame.
First visit to this location... First impression - hostesses were dressed inappropriately. I don't mean classy and skimpy... I mean they looked liked they fell out of the Victoria Secret's discount catalog. Boobs falling out, sheer dresses, tight skirts... it was awkward and tacky. I didn't know if we were in a steak house or a strip club. So there's that. (I know, some would like to gawk at babes all night, but I was on a date and there's only so much sleaze I can take during dinner.)
The service was excellent. Good waiters, prompt attention for drink refills and silverware. The ambiance is pretty loud, so be prepared for some noise. I did enjoy the piano, but the tall ceilings and busy restaurant amplified everything.
We started with the shrimp cocktail - nice and spicy sauce, four prawns. Yummy. My date had a salad and it was fine. I had the lobster bisque and had to send it back because it was cold - this was the one real blemish on the evening.
For our entrees, my date had the tuna steak and she said it was very good. I had a nine-oz sirloin and it was OK. This dish also wasn't sizzling hot and the steak was tasty, but not the best I've had.
We decided on the strawberry shortcake for dessert and two coffees - very nice. Nothing outrageous, but nice.
Overall, it was a fine experience, but for the price, I felt they were lacking. Flemings and St. Elmo's are still a better choice.
This is my first visit to one of the Mo's restaurants.
LOCATION: The restaurant is tucked away in a corner of Clay Terrace across from Cafe Petite Chou.
INTERIOR: Upon entering the restaurant you are greeted by the hostess on the left and a medium sized bar area to the right. We didn't see a hostess stand but rather a card table so maybe they haven't quite gotten all the furnishings yet (they opened just a few days ago). The restaurant is setup with all the seating to the left of a long walkway and an additional semi-private elevated eating area in the rear. The kitchen is hidden from view which I think is a shame in a high end restaurant. The acoustics are on the loud side so don't come here expecting a quiet evening.
BATHROOM: The bathroom was clean but I think it looks a little bleak to not have even one picture on the wall.
DRINKS: The restaurant has a decent selection of bottled beers including some local bottled beers but they do not have anything on draught. The wine list is impressive and reasonably priced for a steakhouse.
SERVICE: Mostly good service although I think the tablecloth should have been crumbed between courses and they should watch the fingers in the food when they drop the plates!
FOOD: The food is what makes a restaurant for me, and this is where you're either going to love this place or maybe think it's "meh". Â I will state up front that my first impressions of the food did not wow me. Â I like spice and usually order Thai food "medium", but the shrimp cocktail sauce is over the top spicy. The shrimp should also have been cold but they were just room temperature and limp. Â We ordered the prime filets and the quality of the steaks was excellent, but the steaks were severely undercooked (according to the server that is the "Mo's way"), personally, I think Mo's should just cook it as ordered. The creamed corn was pretty good and the cookie dessert was enjoyed by my dining partner but I thought it was undercooked and doughy.
FINAL CONCLUSION: Compared to Outback this is a 5 star restaurant, but, for my money this place gets 3 stars. There are other steakhouses in the area that I will revisit before coming here again.
