Today, I visited Mulligan's here in San Clemente. Â Mulligan's is a great little casual "dive" bar for locals in an industrial area a bit off El Camino Real, not far from Pico. Â
As this basic smaller sized sports bar likely won't ever be a candidate for Architectural Digest, you will never forget you are in what I guess today would be termed a "dive" bar.  However, as the visual "skin" of Mulligan's  was looked beyond today, very happily,  I got very friendly & attentive service. I had a tasty cheeseburger with great french fries.  There wasn't a real feeling like I was an oddball for my first time at Mulligan's.  In fact, the locals were friendly; I even got invited to a game of pool by an obvious local while he was waiting for a friend to come and play pool with.   I thought I was very outclassed by noticing this nice man's high-end looking cue and case. luckily, right after the break, his friend showed up; I bowed out diplomatically and resumed practicing my pool shots.
There are five pool tables in fair to good shape. Â Some felt is torn along the edges, but the tables seem to perform alright, plus, the pool leagues (APA) play there regularly as well, so they must be alright for them to play on. Â They have a foosball table as well.
You sure can't go wrong here if you're not looking for the more foo foo pool places. Â Here, only here I"ve found, you get .75 cent pool games....everywhere else, I've found is at least $1. Â Plus, they have super reasonable food specials (I think) everyday, and their drinks are reasonable---I can't miss!
Although Mulligan's Sports Bar is not at all a fancy place, here, you can eat, drink, and just plain have fun & chill in this place's ultra-casualness offering possibly the most reasonable prices anywhere here in O.C.!
Rolled in here late on a Friday night in November. Â It was all of 45 degrees outside but we'd rode in from North OC so there was no turning back. Â And I needed to warm my hands up around a cold glass of beer.
I wasn't quite sure what to expect, as I'd heard mixed reports from friends and acquaintances.
Walking in, there are two pretty big rooms, the first with some high top tables, fooseball, and a couple pool tables. Â Another one a few steps down with a pool table and I'm not sure what else. Â
Seemed pretty low key, but there were all of 4 people in the place. Â Sometimes, like that night, that's a plus.
Bartender helped me right away and I had 2 pints before my road dog Russ got out of the head. Â One of the black stuff and something more mild for my buddy. Â He was shaking his head coming out so I wasn't sure what to expect in there. Â More about that later.
We talked a little with the bartender. Â A small group came in a little later and livened the place up. Â They seem to have a pretty good beer selection.
As we were chatting with the bartender the subject of dive bars came up between him and the other group there and I heard the comment of "this is the best dive bar in town."
Kind of a back handed compliment I think, but very fitting. Â Honestly I wish it were closer to home.
My buddy even got hit on by some drunk girl. Â The conversation was something like her: "Do I know you?" Â him: Â "no." Â her: "Do i want to?" Â him: "I don't think so." Â
Oh, the bathroom.. Â Ya know, i don't go to a lot of dive bars, but I've been to my fair share. Â This was the first that had the totally legit condom vending machine in the head. Â Really? Â novelty condom machine? Â First, how old are those things? Â Second, who actually buys that shit? Â Lastly, that crap is probably made in china from some suspicious facsimile of latex which I would not want touching my skin. Â ESPECIALLY that skin.
Anyway, Mulligans, I'll be back when the weather warms up a little. Â Maybe this time I'll bring more dirty bikers.
This is a bar that is almost invisible. It is in an industrial area of surf shops. The clientele that frequent here are usually the owners and workers that are local to here and not alot of tourists come in. I have found it is very friendly and being a local now I enjoy this place as they have great drink/food specials that change everyday.  In addition to the drink specials  (if you can believe this) a good kitchen for food as well. Saturday night brings a 25cent beer special (draft of course) but hey its 25 cents, oh there is a fee of 5 bucks for a wristband though. I guess for ten dollars you can get pretty hammered. Watch out on the pool tables as there are some pretty good players here. All in all a cool place to chill, watch some sports and have a beer after work.
