Found this place by reviews on Yelp. I'm from California and visiting Mount Rushmore. This place is excellent. Friendly staff and the food was great. My husband had the Rueben sandwich, he said it was best he's had. I had the 1/2 Chicken wrap and it was great also. I would highly recommend this place to anyone.
Review Source:We loved this place. We were looking for a good, unique place for dinner and found an evening hangout instead. The meatloaf was awesome and we were pleased with the beer offerings as well. They had bottled Lindemans' Framboise - a raspberry lambic beer and a favorite of mine - and when I ordered it, they served it with a glass with fresh raspberries at the bottom. I have never seen that elsewhere.
The pub is set up very well, you can tell someone really thought it out. There's a lounge area with low comfy chairs, there is an outdoor bar area with fire pits, a few booths, some large and small high top tables, regular tables with comfortable wheeled lounge chairs, and the bar is dual-leveled with stools on one side and low chairs on the other. Very smart.
They even have pool tables and other shuffleboard (I think) tables towards the back. We loved it and would go back again if we return to the area!
Tried out this place over the holidays and they were strong, even in a rush. I was very impressed with the fried pickles and the great selection of regional beers. I went back a couple of times. Good vibes whether you're in a booth or sitting at the bar. Some attractive and diverse clientele as well.
Review Source:Okay, i went back, thanks largely to Jake B.'s assurances that my previous less-than-stellar comment was taken seriously and shared with the staff.
i must say, the service was impeccable, the food was great, the music wasn't cranked up to 11, and the beer (the one thing i care most about) was served properly.
well done, murphy's!! Â customer service done right!
Murphy's is probably pretty damn good if you are a local. But I'm from Cali, where "gastropub" means some really great quality foods, unique menus, and really special locales. Murphy's falls a little short on all of those.... but if I lived in Rapid City, I'd probably put it on my "regulars" list.
I skipped the alcohol so I can't speak to the extensiveness or lack thereof... just getting that out of the way.
I ordered fried pickles with prosciutto, 4 cheese soup, and an awesome berry and chocolate cake dish for dessert. Have to confess that the dessert was probably the best thing out of the three. The prosciutto was too much like actual ham, thick and a little too fried. Pickles were pretty good considering they had been wrapped and fried, still crunchy in certain spots. The 4 cheese soup was filling, but nothing special. The dessert... well that's what I'm "writing home" about.... it was definitely a winner and very well done. Moist without being soggy and held-up well against the dollop of vanilla bean ice cream.
Honestly, Murphy's is also a cavern... I'm used to gastropubs being more intimate or at least feeling that way. The high ceilings, deep aisles to the back, and lack of overall sound damping makes it seem too big for exclusivity. First impressions count and while I wasn't necessarily disappointed by the food, I wasn't blown away either and the space didn't help me feel warm and cozy.
Murphy's. Sexy interior, big dark bar, classy retro-ish chairs, pub tables, leather lounge area, flat screen TVs, big chalkboard with handwritten cocktail specials...all the visual elements that read: "hey young hip fun lover, come be classy here".
So I go. Renowned for an extensive selection of rotating craft beers and renaissance cocktails (A manhattan, anyone?) as well as a fun-but-elegant-comfort-food-fusion menu. A place for the diaspora hipster to go be adult.
Each time I (or a pal with me) have requested beers from the beer list, they are usually not available. But hey, the list has one of those beguiling beer charts on it, so just keep looking, right?
The lack of certain beers may be a testament to the popularity of the joint, however, when you ask for five different beers, and each is no longer in stock, it tends to disappoint. By like, a lot. Like, I kind of feel  like a dude feeling up the hot chick in class, and when you get to her boobs, it turns out most of it is toilet paper or one of those sick super padded bras. Do you really have all these beers? Or do you really just have the same shitty selection as every other bar, but PRETEND to have those decent beers? Hmmm???
The food...creative dishes, unique ingredients, but kind of..."meh". The hot wings for instance. I tried the strawberry habanero wings, expecting...well something sweet and spicy, but I ended up with what looked like grilled (gah, sinners) hot wings with a mild jam flavor. No strawberry. No habanero. No spicy, no saucy, and not even fucking fried. But they used those super huge drummies, so...
I've had the fried pickles- avoid. It's the spear, with the center wrapped in prosciutto and a piece of cheese, then tempura battered and fried. All the errors of this: prosciutto is chewy, and a poor choice of meat blanket to use in which to wrap something to be fried. Bacon or go home. Also, the very center of a large spear pickle? So you eat near half the pickle before arriving at the meaty-cheesy bit that is supposed to set this fried pickle apart from other fried pickles. Then you struggle with mouthfuls of cheesy, chewy pickley prosciutto. And then tempura batter? What the hell? Just...no.
Had the pulled pork sandwich, and it was more of a slow cooker pot roasted pulled pork and less a bbq pulled pork. It was huge, but  not gross, but not super.
Had the famous mac n' cheese. I say famous as everyone I have ever interacted with about Murphy's goes on and on about the macaroni and cheese. It was okay. But not....not super. Not amazing. Just okay.
Went with someone who ordered a grilled chicken sandwich and they totally brought the wrong sandwich. In fact, it seemed like it was maybe a fried beef sandwich? I am not sure, neither was the person who ordered it.
I dunno, the sum of the parts of Murphy's leaves me underwhelmed but not willing to not go back. I mean hell, the hot chick still has boobs, even if they are small, right? And it's still the hot chick, so yeah.
Not a kid friendly place- go for the ambiance, the opportunity to look at a nice lists of good beers you wish you could have and drink a gimlet. Watch soccer, if you're one of those types. Eat some sub par mac and hope the cougars show up soon to pay the bill, because oh yeah, it's expensive.
Left beyond satisfied! Our service was great and fast and knowledgable  (Wednesday night). We started with the fried pickles that were wrapped in mozzarella and prosciutto hand battered and fried-sooo good! My husband had the fish and chips and said "best I've had in a long time". I had the Ruben and sweet potato fries, also very good:) the sweet potato fries were served with maple bacon butter and oh my gosh! So delicious! We would definitely come back when we are in town again and would recommend this place to anyone.
Review Source:passed through here on our cross country road trip, and were looking forward to a gastropub type place. the beer selection here was great, and i liked the way they listed them on the menu. they had a chart so you could pick darker/lighter, more/less hoppy, etc. they had one beer that almost tasted like coffee - it was an excellent base for a car bomb :)
i had the meatloaf (HUGE) and CB had the grilled cheese. both were good, nothing to complain about. i knocked off a star (and considered knocking off a second one) because we had a somewhat unprofessional waiter. I think he may have just been new or trying to be nice, but at one point, he sat down at the table with us...awkward to say the least. we are usually very easy going and like talking with new people we meet, but this crossed the line. other than that, had a great dining experience at Murphy's.
Stopped in here for happy hour on Friday afternoon after reading the mostly positive reviews on Yelp, and was not dissapointed at all. My wife and I sat at the bar and were greeted almost immediately and were recomended to sample a beer if we were undecided on our choice. Her and I are always looking for something new, but getting a big beer and then not liking it at all is a big risk so always nice to be offered a small sample before ordering. We each had a couple different beers and the fired pickle appetizer, this is a must even if you think you won't like it, you will love them!! I would give this place five stars but I will wait for our next visit when we have a main course to eat.
Review Source:Dinner here on a cross-country drive was the best meal of our whole trip. The big salads are superb, adorned with quality meat, and the portobello-bunnies burger was exactly as you expect: delicious. The outdoor seating is very nice, and they've got gas fire puts for times when it's cool.
Review Source:Although this place isn't inexpensive (about $50 bucks, excluding gratuity, for 3 meals and 1 beer each for the 2 adults), the food was excellent and unique. Â The service was generally good, although uneven. Â After we got our food, our server didn't stop by much until it was time to deliver the bill. Â But the food is worth it anyway, so much so that I'm awarding the place 5 stars for the food (the service would be 4)....
My husband loved the shepherd's pie ($12), I had the Reuben with sweet potato fries ($9), and our son had the buffalo meatloaf sandwich ($11) with a side of asparagus ($1 upcharge for the asparagus). Â All were excellent, although I wish that I would have settled for the 1/2 sandwich with 1 side for $6 rather than the whole sandwich with a side, since I personally didn't need that much food and ended up eating too much because it was so good. Â The sweet potato fries come with a maple bacon butter which was both surprising and delightful. Â The buffalo meatloaf sandwich was especially delicious, too.
We recommend the place highly.
we arrived for happy hour and bar/apps were half off. Â we ordered several apps to include the grilled wings, deviled eggs, salmon cakes and fried pickles. Â Only the fried pickles were worth ordering again. Â for mains we ordered the buffalo meatloaf, mac and cheese, grilled cheese and shepard's pie. Â this is were the game came up a notch. Â the shepards pie was rich and tasty, the meatloaf was upscale, the mac was creamy and rich and the cheese sandwich was taken to the next level. Â the fried cheesecake for dessert was good. Â top it off with a friendly waitress.
on a side not for a table for 4 one would hope portions could be regulated (3 pickle, 5 deviled eggs, 10 wings, 3 salmon caked and 3 fried cheesecake bites) let the equal splitting begin?????
Simply the best combination of food and atmosphere found anywhere in Rapid City. Â Some serious thought was put into the menu at Murphy's and they have delivered a great experience on any of our visits. I would highly recommend one of their burgers or the steak sandwich and don't forget the sweet potato fries with maple bacon butter.
Review Source:I just had a chance to revisit Murphys Pub and Grill and have decided its probably the best place to go in Rapid City. It is hip and has a oustanding drink menu. I espeically enjoy their Mojito Mondays, since that is one of my favorite drinks. Â I just read when I was there as well they won for the Black Hills "The Best Bloody Mary" which I did not get to try unfourtunately but on my to do list when I return back. Â
As for the Food, I did have a chance to try their bar menu, I must say it has a flare but its Bar Food, and personally not my favorite place to dine, but if you looking for a late night treat then this place is where to get it as it serves late into the night and I have to give them Ups for that because not many places do that and with Drinking I think you need a late night snack sometimes to make sure you do not get that terrible Hangover, so big props on that. Â
Hopefully next time I will get the chance to try their sit down menu and get to do a better review on their food.
And yet another homerun struck outta the ballpark, Murphy's.
Tonight, I went and had something that might not ordinarily be on the menu. Â Since it was St. Paddy's, I tried their Boxty.
A Boxty is an Irish potato/pancake that has two textures: grated potato and mashed and is served with a creme fraiche. Â
I was so pleased. Â The presentation was gorgeous. Â Instead of 2-3 giant Boxties with a jillion calories, these were 3-4 mini-boxties with slices of salmon artfully arranged on top, capers, and a lovely a ailoi drizzled for effect. Â Presentation? Â A+. Â
I was a complete hog and ordered their cheese soup on the side. Â My only complaint would be to recommend rye homemade croutons rather than store-bought white on top.
Otherwise, wonderful.
Visited Murphy's on Black Friday for drinks with a friend. Â Nice place to sit and chat. Â The atmosphere is less like a bar and more like a pub.
We didn't have any food on this visit, but I've had the food before and think it's pretty good. Â I did notice on this visit that they now have huge TVs in the bathroom. Â Probably not necessary, but I guess if you are a sports fan.
Great atmosphere, service, food and micro-brews!
I found this place from other Yelp reviews and partly by accident driving down Main Street en route to Mt. Rushmore...
I met one of the owners and sampled some very good microbrews, along with the Shepard's Pie... Awesome! Â The other servers were also friendly and helpful. Â
After a long day of travel this was just the spot I was looking for. Â Completely unexpected for downtown Rapid City but this casual, yet upscale Pub and Eatery has a unique selection of local beers, and a great variety of food and appetizers... (Try the fried pickles) This is a place I will definitely visit again!
Really great find on a otherwise boring drive through SD. Another reviewer said the owner studied under Todd English, and the bartender confirmed he was in Boston but didn't know who English was. Great Square bar with big comfy pigskin colored leather barstools and multiple tvs overhead. You can tell every detail was paid attention to. Food was good and reasonably priced. Rueben and cup of tomato soup for $10. Sandwiches ranged from $8-12 and entrees from $12-24 for the Buffalo steak. 40 taps and lots of bottles, this would be a good find in Boston let alone South Dakota. Only downside was some BoH staff who came out and was dropping a few F bombs, I don't mind swearing but some guests might not.
Review Source:Try the buffalo steak; especially if you are a tourist and will not have many other opportunities. Dining partner had bison burgers before but not the steak. Slightly different taste and very good. It is 16 oz. I had a few pieces off my partner's plate.
Craft draft beer seems to be their specialty but I had the white Sangria. It was light and complimented my chicken breast wrapped in a beer batter and deep fried with a side of white potato fries.
I liked the wrap around soft chairs and low tables. You have options. There are high tables & chairs and lots of bar seats.
Murphy's has a wonderful selection of beer, some of which you can't find anywhere else in the state. This is a good place to sit, relax, and have a drink with friends. The new patio is opening in the early part of August 2011; it will be a very cool addition to an already beautiful restaurant/bar.
Review Source:As a tourist here in Rapid City, my biggest complaint about Murphy's is that we didn't find it sooner! We have to leave in 24 hours and that only leaves room for one more dinner at this WONDERFUL place. Great, fresh, eye-appealing, palate pleasing awesome-ness!
It's casual, yet sophisticated...the food is accessible, yet modern...and its affordable! It's the dining trifecta!
I hope Rapid City natives keep this place in business because I want to eat here again!

We had a fantastic lunch at Murphys during our vacation. Don't know of I'd recommend it for young children, but if your kids are school age, this place is great for the whole family.
Our kids both had grilled cheese and fruit..the sandwich was huge. My wife had gr cheese and soup, along with the sweet potato fries which she claimed are the best shes ever had. I had a great burger.
Staff were super friendly and it was easy to find. Lots of high def TVs and some games to play while waiting for your food.
A welcome change from fast food or bad truck stops if you are vacationing with the family!
