A small unassuming place with a limited menu...the kind of place where you know you're going to get a good meal as soon as you walk in.

We had roast beef sandwiches and gravy fries.  The sandwich was excellent, good beef, good roll and nice sharp cheese!  The gravy fries were unique in that they also had little pieces of roast beef, in addition to the dark flavorful gravy.

All in all...we will definitely be back, but I don't think I will deviate from what I had.  They know what they are doing and they do it right...there's no reason to mess with that.

This place is everything everyone has written and more.  They do three things and do them better than everyone:  roast beef, gravy fries and good service.  It really is an old corner bar which I love.  Six bucks for a sandwich which is better than anything else in the city.

was back in Delco for a visit and Nick's was on my culinary tour.  Nothing like a Nick's hot roast with provolone and a cold pint of beer for a Saturday afternoon lunch.   You'll not find a better hot roast beef anywhere!

Great food, cheap beer. The best mozzarella sticks I've ever had. The sandwiches are huge and the fries are awesome. Jeff the bartender is friendly and quick with drinks. Good place for dinner and drinks after a long week!

South Philly's demographic recreation in Delaware County.  Speech, crowd, music, ambiance, you could be in a blue-collar Bella Vista joint with a cold frosty on one hand and shoving a huge roast beef sandwich in your mouth with the other.

Entering this place is an interesting exercise in societal anthropology.  An enclosed porch-like area serves as a sit-down restaurant area, where old Bruce Springsteen tunes can be heard, interspersed with Brooks and Dunn, Alabama and trucker rock.  The aroma of freshly cooked roast beef steeps the air and serves as an appetizer as the guests engage in enthusiastic and gesticulation-filled conversation about the Phillies or (heaven forbid) Yankees.  Then you enter a bar area where even more vivid conversation tends to drown out the music, as two-somes in everything from overalls, Union Local T-Shirts, and shorts and tattoo-bearing T-shirts seem to be vigorously and loudly arguing while chomping down on huge sandwiches and beer, but instead are having their versions of normal conversations while having a quiet dinner.   Off to the side, there is a take-out area.  Wow...  I'm beginning to like this place...

Then you get the food.  Oh... the roast beef...  Yummmm.....  Ooooohhhhh....  Ahhhh.....  Simply stated, the best Roast Beef Sandwiches on earth.  I don't know what they put on them but damn they're GOOD!  Dripping with their juice.  Fabulous French Fries.  Their horseradish should be packaged and sold to the public because it is also superb.  Yum.  One thing about their sandwiches, you have to eat them soon because with all the juices, the Kaiser rolls can get a bit sloppy.  And yes, they're big.  One sandwich plus fries is dinner.  The waitresses are uber friendly and no-nonsense type.

Getting here is a cinch.  Steps away from the 101 trolley between Media and Philly. No free WiFi, which means you don't have to fear this place becoming a yuppie hangout....

Best Roast Beef Sandwich around hands down! Make sure you try the gravy fries. Full Bar inside with great beer specials! They do however need to upgrade their TVs.

I've never had anything except the roast beef sandwich, cheese fries, and blue moon...no reason to try anything else...read the back of the "menu" for some of the slag for how you want the sandwich (ie "on the out"). Go there and stuff yourself!

Great roast beef with gravy. The horseradish was hot which is great. Mozzarella sticks are good with the marinara sauce. The Italian hits are a must. Definitely can see why this place why this place has been opened since 1938.

Was able to swing by here and just happened to be lunch time so I tried the roast beef. Awesome! Nice amount of juice but the roll stands up to it and does not get soggy. Great stuff!

This roast beef will knock your d*ck off!  It's that good.  The roast beef and gravy fries alike.

Don't be fooled by the Nicks Roast Beef in NE philly on Cottman.  They want to be like "Nicks Old Original" but they weren't even close.  They almost have an identical name and even have a similar bull as their mascot but they are owned by different owners and are completely independent of each other.

Nicks Old Original Roast Beef in Springfield and South Philly - 10/10
Nicks Roast Beef in NE Philly - 2/10

I love to bring Nick's virgins here.  I twist their arm to order a roast beef combo and gravy fries.  It arrives nice and quick and then I just sit back and watch and listen.  It starts with the rolling of the eyes and the huge smiles with roast beef sticking out of their mouth.  Then there is the OMG, OMG, sometimes muttered several times.  It's hard to understand them because their mouth is full.

This is all before they try the gravy fries.  Then it really gets crazy.  You know they like it when they start comparing it to sex.

Add a cheap beer in an ice cold glass and it doesn't get any better than this!

The best roast beef sandwiches and the best gravy fries around. Just amazingly moist, flavorful, and seriously delicious sandwiches. It may seem like overload to get the gravy fries too but I've never regretted it. Crispy fries smothered in gravy and chunks of roast beef? Bring it on. I visited an Arby's for the first time recently and could only feel sad that their sandwich didn't even compare to the delicious potential that roast beef has. Maybe Nick's is what shut down the Arby's on Macdade.

Nick's has absolutely ruined all other roast beef sandwiches for me. I am completely unwilling to settle for anything less than a Roast Beef Combo Overboard. Their gravy fries are to die for (they use the same gravy as they use on the sandwiches and then add some scraps of roast beef on top, yum!) This is definitely not the place to go on a first date, you will be elbow deep in gravy no matter how daintily you try to eat that sandwich. I have been known to travel as far as 45 minutes out of my way to grab a to go order from Nicks.

I've been a fan of the South Philly location for many years.  I'm happy to say that this location is every bit as good with much better parking.   This is the best roast beef sandwich I have had outside of the North Shore in the Boston area, and might even be better.

Not quite a roast beef sandwich from Ye Olde Ale House in Lafayette Hill, but pretty daggone close.  I gave a 5, but it's more like a 4.75.

A little skimpy on the "outs", but the beef, sharp provolone, and the COLD beers were great.

    Very reasonable prices.

roast beef w/ cheese and a side of gravy fries- hands down on one of the best meals I've eaten.  Been going here since growing up in Springfield and I will always make the treck back despite feeling like the biggest fat girl after I'm done. It's simple, you get your sandwhich, you get fries and you get a beer- you don't really need much more than that.

    Omg.

I came in from CA for work and had just seen the Philly "man vs food", so was on the hunt for this mythical roast pork sandwich.  I was way the hell out of the way of dinic's @ the reading terminal market, so I found Nick's old original roast beef, about 75% closer to me.

I still haven't been able to try dinic's but Nick's was the best roast beef [saving  the pork for tomorrow; beef *was* in the restaurant name after all] sandwich I have ever tasted.  the bun is fantastic, the cheese is sooo good and perfectly melted in w/ the beef and the beef is perfectly seasoned...  Absolutely delicious.

Since it's such a hit w/ local folks, the parking is a bit questionable, esp. with the parking in back so tight.

The atmosphere is definitely a 'local' joint and for a newb the menu's a bit sparse on details, but that's just what this place is like.  Adds to the experience. :)

PS:  DO NOT FORGET THE GRAVY FRIES.

I haven't been to the original Nick's Roast Beef in Philly since I was a little kid, so I can't really compare these sandwiches to theirs.  But I will say that there probably isn't a better place to sit-down & eat in Springfield-- casual or otherwise.  The sandwiches are a bit messy, but they're GOOD.  Beer is cheap (at least to this New York City boy) & the battered fries are heavenly.  The menu is small, but to me, that's usually the sign of good, specialized food.  The location is a bit random (okay, VERY random) & the building quite unassuming, but seek it out if you're in the area.. you probably won't be able to find better.

    Enjoy!

Straight up my favorite place to go if I'm in the area and want some comfort food. Great roast beef and roast pork. It's something that needs to be eaten to really get the full effect since it's hard to articulate via text. They have lots of different options for how you want the sandwich fixed. If you're hungry you can put down like 3 of these sandwiches, they are that good. Also to go with it they have some awesome gravy fries. It's really not that versatile so if you have a picky eater with you who doesn't like some sloppy sandwiches go somewhere else. Also my kids hate it. The sandwiches are big so kids might have a hard time getting a handle on them. Just a warning, otherwise try this place and dig in.

Let's start by stating that I am a West Coast girl.

However, my thoughts on moving to a Philadelphia suburb dramatically changed after having a traditional roast beef sandwich w/ au jus fries at Nick's.

My fiancé grew up in the adorable town of Springfield and ranted & raved about this hidden gem.  I am a big foodie and culinary fan, so the thought of my future husband going berserk when just speaking of Nick's RB sandwiches scared me a bit.

Boy was I wrong.  By far, the best roast beef sandwich I have ever had.  Plus, the bar is a perfect place to drink away for hours afterward, hoping to rid yourself of that full feeling.

This place is a foodie gem, as everyone who grew up in the area proudly brags.  But for those straggly West Coast people like myself, just trust me .. this sandwich holds the power of turning you in a Pennsylvania resident.

Nicks is only a few minutes from my house. I am always picking up roast beef sandwiches. I call ahead and order it, usually takes like 10-15 minutes. The service is good there. Oh, the gravy fries rock too!

Went for lunch today for the first time. There's definitely something unique about it and I thought the food was pretty good.

Had a roast beef sandwich and fries. The roast beef comes on a delicious bun in gravy, and you can get cheese and other toppings on it if you want. The thing was pretty hearty, but I think the prices are a bit too high as you have to order fries on the side, which were also good though.

The menu is pretty limited but they seem to be sticking to what they do best. Turkey and pork are their other main sandwiches, and they have some additional side items like cheese sticks and onion rings. I really wish they did a good burger because their bun is really good.

I think I'd go back but I couldn't quite get up to 4 stars because of the somewhat high prices and limited menu. I do recommend it though, especially for a place to get a cheap Yuengling and a hearty meat sandwich.

A roastbeef sandwich that is unreal. The turkey sandwich is equally as good.  Reminds me of the day after Thanksgiving - all the leftover goodness.  A dark and dingy dive with cheap domestics.  Did I mention great place to pick up chicks?

    It's a dump...but I enjoy it's dumpyness.

Great roastbeef sandwiches and very cheap beer. The menu is very limited but that's how it should be here.
