I love this place. I go with my kids and I cannot get enough of it. Breakfasts are great and the SOUPS are fabulous. Home made, tasty and healthy. I love the lentil and navy bean. Great pricing. Perfect for kids. Forget the junk chains and go for this GEM in NORTHFIELD. Keep up the great cooking!
Review Source:Great omelets the way you ask, Â fried potatoes with the omelet done right, The different soups on a daily basis are great and hot, Reasonable prices, clean, always crowed at lunch. Get there before 11:45 or after 1:00 other wise probably a short wait. The sandwiches are good size and very filling and come with soup. Dinners are also quite good.
Review Source:They don't make 'em like this anymore, which is a shame because, when done well, these types of places are awesome. Â You get above-average diner food, terse but generally pleasant service, and good value.
+ Solid, hearty turkey burger, good enough to eat with just onions and pickles
+ Omelettes are unfortunately the flat griddled type rather than the fluffy skillet variety. Â But they're cooked through, even browned a bit on the outside, just how I like them. Â And these people are not afraid to toast the devil out of an english muffin either.
+ Gorgeous, perfectly cooked steak fries like you hardly ever find anywhere anymore
+ Fried chicken pretty bland but very moist
+ Â This is a good spot for soup, too; the lentil is simple but good, and the navy bean is very good. Â I spent months chasing the clam chowder (an occasional Friday soup) and when I finally tried it, I was fairly well satisfied.
+ Chocolate malt milkshake in the B+/A- range
+ Rice pudding, pretty good though doused with cinnamon
Milkshakes, burgers, fries, breakfast all day...God bless America.
Look at the generous portions here. Â Once I ordered a daily special shrimp basket, $7.95. Â I got a bowl (not a cup) of soup, a pile of fries which had to come on their own separate plate, a baker's dozen fried shrimp, and a big scoop of cole slaw. Â Oh, and a basket of bread, which I believe is gratis for all customers. Â Eight bucks!
If you go around 1pm you can probably get a booth, but before that a solo luncher is best served at the counter. Â They do a brisk business, and rightfully so.
(I started this review thinking I was going to give this place 2 stars, but as I was writing and recalling my experience, I realized it deserves 1.)
I was kind of disappointed in my experience, and to be fair, I wasn't expecting much at all. First of all, the service was lousy, which I feel may be a product of the fact that my friend and I were at least 20 years younger than everyone else in the place. (I'm used to people at "family" restaurants thinking that for some reason the fact that I'm young and have a ton of tattoos means I won't tip, but it was really noticeable that we were getting worse service than other customers. Whatever.)
I wound up getting the feta omelette with toast and hash browns and a bowl of the cream of chicken and rice soup. Soup came out first, bland as hell. I doused it in hot sauce and pepper and it did the trick. The omelette was alright. The hash browns needed the hot sauce and pepper treatment as well. Toast was fine, but it's pretty hard to fuck up toast.
The only thing I was impressed out of the whole thing was the price. Between my friend and I the bill was only around 25 bucks. Even so, I'm not coming back. Actually, on second thought, I might swing by when I turn 60. Probably not though.
This place is such a gem! Â Order the steak for breakfast, you really won't find a better steak at a diner. The portions are plentiful, the ingredients are quality, the service is quick and efficient and to the point, and as friendly as you can get for people who have probably worked there forever - a bit of sarcasm and a quick joke, but very pleasant, the prices probably haven't changed in 20 years, so they are low. And all the assorted jellies you can imagine for your toast. It's always crowded, it's a tiny place, but I've never waited more than 3 minutes. Very well run!
Review Source:I've been coming to the Northfield Restaurant for ever and ever. Â They've got a mean banana milkshake and BLT + Egg that is actually the only thing I ever order, anywhere. Â But they also serve butt steak and cottage cheese on a lettuce leaf. Â I wish you could still smoke in restaurants because I would love to light up a stogie and drink some coffee in this joynt.
Review Source:Almost always crowded - and not with the standard North Shore dwellers either - getting in the door and seated can sometimes be a challenge and is also sometimes annoying. Â Cheap food - filling, good, fast. Â Although, they cheap you out of free refills for pop (WTF?). Â Standard diner-fare. Â Eggs, bacon, toast, etc. Â I've been a bunch over the past few years. Â Now I enjoy going for a little breakfast with my dad when I'm home for the holidays. Â There are few other places that fill this niche in the area, so maybe that's why.
Review Source:This place is kind of typical Greek owned, everything on the menu diner. Â The decor is all wood, so its more of a small town type diner than the sort of retro chrome laden roadside diners. Â Funny it is right by a major highway. Â Manager was nice and friendly, service was avg., menu is standard and served up quick. Â There is a neighborhood kind of vibe and feel here. Â Here is the thing that I found here that merits that 4th star. Â The Frankencheezie. Â I have never heard of this before I ate here. Â Its a large Hot Dog (all beef I think) cut lengthwise and stuffed with cheese and then bound together again by wrapping it in bacon! Â Oh my. Â I wonder if they serve these anywhere else?
Review Source:Jess how can you give this place 3 stars. Â I love the breakfast food. Â I used to come here at least once a week before high school back in the day. Â The place has not changed in decades. Â The egg dishes are very good. Â The sandwiches are also particularly tasty. Â It is one of the few remaining "diners" on the North Shore.
