We were in the neighborhood and decided to give this place another try since the food wasn't that bad. We were pleasantly surprised. We shared the crab cakes for our appetizer ... Â I'm always nervous to order crab cakes when I'm not in a seafood restaurant but these were surprisingly very good ... they had lots of crab, hardly any breadcrumbs and the outside was crispy. It was also a nice portion. Will definitely order that again. We then shared a pizza and cheese burger... the pizza was good, thin crust with just enough topping and not greasy.... the cheese burger was really good... served on a kaiser roll and french fries... The french fries were out of this world.... perfectly cooked... nice and crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. I usually am strong and won't eat any fries, but these ... I just could not resist... they were worth every calorie and the extra half hour on the treadmill :)
Glad we tried it again ... we had a better waiter this time, he was attentive and had a great sense of humor. Also, they seemed to have fixed the aircon... It was 90 degrees outside and the temperature inside was consistently comfortable.
I've been here a few times. Up until my last visit I would have given Oak Ale House four stars (mainly because the pastas are delicious and I had not had any problems). However, I went on a Sunday night around 7pm. The restaurant was not particularly busy, but was clearly understaffed for the evening. I had a two hour window to kill before Game of Thrones at 9pm so I wasn't worried about rushing. I ordered a water, New England Clam Chowder, and BBQ pork with mashed potatoes.
So many mistakes were made. I never received any eating utensils, plates, or my water. After 10-15 minutes of waiting I went on a scavenger hunt for all the supplies: I located plates, a glass, and pitcher of water and proceeded set my own table and pour my own drinks.
As for the food: chowder was good, but the pork was rubber (ugh!). To top it all off the service was so slow that I missed the beginning of Thrones. This meant I was forced to wait until the next showing at 11pm to catch up.
Unacceptable. Get it together Oak Ale House.
Attended once and ate in the bar.. would prefer to eat in the dining room next time. Â I ordered a open steak sandwich with fries and it was delicious, cooked perfectly and the meat was high quality.
A week later attended a large birthday party upstairs. Â The waitress gave it her best attempt to keep us in food and wine but we could have used additional help. Â The food was the usual fare of ziti, chicken, and salad, calamari. Â Everything was tasty and hot and the servers were all friendly.
I wouldn't mind having a small party there in the future.
This a typical home town bar. They had a good bar pizza and a live band (which is always a plus).  The only downside was that the waitress forgot to bring me a drink  a few times and was missing when we wanted our bill.  Maybe she was having an off night.  I would go back to try them again.
Review Source:I love this place! The  first thing I ever ordered was the Salmon Mediteranean and I totally enjoyed it. I have gone back about 10 times since for dinner with my family and also enjoyed the eggplant parm  & the chicken parm. I go there for luch with co-workers and friends and have enjoyed both the cesar salad with chicken and the cesar salad with shrimp.
Review Source:The first time I ever went here I got a burger, even though I asked for medium the burger was still moo'ing. I felt bad about sending it back because the waitress seemed new... needless to say I ended up that night in the hospital for an intestinnsital infection, although I don't blame it on them because I was shopping that day.
I went back again a year ago for a beer, and it was okay. Very low key, smells like old ciggerettes. But then I went back a week ago and there were no seats at the bar so I sat at a bar table... I waited 20 min before I walked over and had to get the bartenders attention because she was too busy gabbing! Then to pay I stood there for another 20 miniutes. Needless to say there was no tip, and I will never GO back.
We went here as a group once we couldnt get a table at the seafood place across the street. We walked in the bar part which looked really cool and modern. Then we went over to the resturant side and we sent to a different land. It was decorated to look like granny's dining room. It was quite a surprise. We looked around and most of the clientel appeared to be in their 60s so I suspect that is the reason for the decor.
Our waitress was nice but quite clueless, she didnt seem to know the menu at all and was forgetful and slow. The food was average at best. I got the raviloi and it was ok, I could have gotten better in the frozen food section at Cost Co though.
It has potential to be a cool place but the food being so dull and the decor is holding it back.
Great sports bar, always a pretty good crowd for Yankees/Mets/Giants/Jets/Devils/Rangers games. Good drink and food specials, small to decent beer selection at best. Outstanding bar food, burgers have always been delicious and the Pizza is to die for. Been here on a number of occasions, not the best place to take a big group though.
Review Source:I loved this place! there are two sides to it: One is the restaurant, went there with a groupon that we had, since we had the groupon it didn't cost us anything but the $25 we had paid for it. The food was great. I had the penne vodka, def. makes my list of best penne vodkas.
Then there is the bar side - Ive been here for random baseball games on random nights. They have a special game day menu & then a regular bar menu. Drinks are cheap. Bar food is amazing - their wings are amazing - haven't tried the pizza yet in all of the times ive been there & apparently it's one of their best menu items.
I went to the oak because it was close by and i was hiungry and saw reviews. Our server didn't come over to the table for the first 10 minutes we were there. It took longer than that top get our drinks. The food? if that's what you want to call it was garbage! I should have knows better considering it smelled like a foot in there to begin with. Then I was NOT surprised to see that they got a health sitation for having knives and a fly swatter in the same bucket. At that point I was just sick.
They should be ashamed with themselves! Going back? NEVER!!!
decent food, nothing out of the ordinary that I haven't had before except my shrimp I never had that particular sauce which I loved.. everyone I was with enjoyed their meal, no complaints
I got the herb encrusted salmon entree, it was good & for an appetizer I got this spicy garlic shrimp which I loved the flavor.. i can tell it had some buffalo sauce with garlic & tomato sauce... my food came to about $30
we were seated upstairs ...I didn't really like the atmosphere it seemed kind of blah like for those prices I feel it should have a nicer ambience and decorations to match but whatever we were there for the food so I guess atmosphere decorations were not all that important
After what - 20 years? of the space being empty after housing Icheban's, Oak Ale House finally got through all the red tape and opened up a couple years ago - after I moved out of Maywood. Â When Groupon sent out a deal of 2 entrees, 2 drinks, 1 appy for $25, I figured what the heck. Â We're not big coupon-users but when we did use any (like Entertainment or Dine Out Tonight), it was always a disaster: participating restaurant staff would look at the coupon and claim they had no idea what it was, or if they did, we'd get crummy service. Â Well, the Oak Ale staff knew everything about their Groupon promotion and basically treated us like royalty. Â They WANT US TO COME BACK! Â That is the point.
I shouldn't judge a book by it's cover as the decor in the back room struck as restaurant close-out, with the elegant blue walls, some gold-framed mirrors and then tacky white lacquer 80s dining chairs, but the food and service were good.
We ordered mussels marinara for an appy ($8.99) and it was fine. Â The rolls were good for mopping up sauce. Â The portion was large enough that we took about half home and threw it over some leftover pasta the next day.
I was having 80s flashbacks and ordered flounder francese ($18.99), with mashed potatoes. Â Three big pieces of flounder with a light lemony sauce, and an ice-cream scoop of what I'm pretty sure were real mashed spuds arrived with some nicely steamed mixed veggies. Â The house salad was blah, but the croutons tasted homemade and the balsamic dressing was delicious. Â There was an option of lentil soup or salad with each entree.
My husband ordered a special breaded boneless pork chop arugula salad ($18.99) with fresh mozz, and red onion. Â Two very large pork medallions and lots of mozz were dressed in a nice balsamic dressing. Â Both entrees were too big to finish so they went home with us. Â In an effort to get our money's worth, the waitress brought out a house salad for hubby too, as he didn't want the soup either, so he had a side salad for his salad. Â
The pizza pies we saw going to other tables looked very nice and we're planning on going back for pizza and drinks soon. Â For what it is, it was very nice.
The bar has great specials, definitely some of the best I've found in this immediate area. It's a good place to watch a game or just hang out. The bartenders are friendly and attentive too.
I've eaten twice at the restaurant part and have been pretty impressed. Again, the prices aren't bad, and they give you a ton of food. There's a good amount of variety on the menu, and the food is usually good. I was pleasantly surprised that the noise from the bar doesn't really enter this area, so you can enjoy your meal in peace.
I shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth. Â It was open after the hurricane. Â Their grill runs on gas, thank heaven.
Don't ask for a decent chardonnay at a place with the name "Ale House." Â I ended up with a fair Pinot Noir. Â Salad OK, but the pasta was a waste. Â They need to know how to properly serve it on Sunday nights in Bergen County. Â The sweet potato fries were good and my friend enjoyed the meat loaf special. Â
I'll go again because it's close by and I saw my friends there. Â I'm not crazy about the food. Â There are 2 bars, so you have a choice for the under 40 crowd and the over 40 crowd.
We had to wait 50 minutes for our entree to arrive. The quality of the food was fair at best. The people next to us ordered burgers and received them before us even though they arrived and ordered after us. The burgers even looked good. This restaurant needs to stick to burgers and fries; it seems like their is nothing more than a "short order cook" in the kitchen. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone nor would I return!!
Review Source:The lady and I ate dinner here in the restaurant portion. Â There is an eponymous rowdy bar next door. Â This place is a solid local restaurant serving burgers, pasta, steaks, etc. Â Everything is solid but nothing is spectacular. Â And prices are fair.
The reason why I am reviewing this place is because it is one of the few decent restaurants on the American Airlines dining awards program. Â I get six miles for every dollar spent. Â So last night's $40 tab means 240 airline miles. Â Huzzah!
First off, I'll start by saying that I have not had a sit down meal at the restaurant part, so I can't comment on that.
My friends and I usually go on Monday nights when they have two dollar drafts, and on Thursdays for $5 pitchers of Yuengling and Coors Light.
The table-top shuffleboard table is a lot of fun, and they have a pool table and a bunch of dart boards, so there are certainly things to do while you put a few back.
On Thursdays after 10, they put a bunch of tables down in the back bar for beer pong. (Theres dart league in the front on Thursdays)
The crowd varies, but as someone in my early 20's I would say that the back room on Thursday usually ends up being that sort of crowd. Â
The bar food isn't all that great. Â Decent, but not spectacular bar-pie. Â
The draw for this place is that its a nice place to go with some friends and drink without having to dig deep into your pockets, and because of that, i've had some really fun times there.
Came across this place after a co-worker mentioned it. They seemed noticeably busy once we walked in and realized no one came to the desk to seat us right away after multiple waitresses including the manager walked passed us and paid us no attention. We waited patiently and were finally told to sit in the corner table where someone would be with us. Again no one paid any attention to us. We watched the couple seated next to us finish their entire dinner and pay for their check before anyone decided to come to our table and ask us for a drink order or provide us with a menu. Finally another group of people sat to the other side of us and right away were given a menu. That's when my husband and I decided to put our coats on and walk out. Thanks for nothing but feeling neglected. Luckily we found a wonderful place not too far in Saddle Brook. Â Never go here the service is horendous!
