I only come here to buy coffee for home, but they have some of the best coffee I've ever had. It's also nice because they roast it locally right there in the shop. Usually they have about 10+ barrels of coffee to choose from.
Old Crown is probably the one thing I miss the most about moving away from Fort Wayne.
My home away from home.
This place has it all;
Wake up early and have a cup of excellent coffee and a muffin.
Eat lunch and have a wrap and a tea.
Dinner on Friday nights is beyond your wildest expectations.
The best coffee roaster in the state of Indiana. The aroma of the place is intoxicating and the atmosphere is very friendly. There is Coffee, Tea, Beer, Wine, Mixed drinks and straight spirits, whatever your heart desires they have you covered.
Chef Johnny has a new menu every Friday night and it is not to be missed. Each week something new and exotic right here in Fort Wayne.
I'm not from around Ft. Wayne so my expectations might have been influencing my perception of this place, but from the reviews plus what a friend told me (that the coffee was comparable to Intelligentsia) I was super stoked to go here.
It was really crowded which I take to mean the food is good. Seemed to have a decent bar with good beers. I purchased a pound of their Colombian whole bean coffee. The service was ok, not great. It was also about a hundred degrees out though, so I don't hold it against them.
The coffee really didn't impress me, and at $16 something a pound, was a bit of a  disappointment. I didn't care for the location either, but based on the crowd I'm assuming no one else minded. I guess I was envisioning something a little more downtown, and was taken aback by the strip mall across the street. Well, we are in Indiana.
I would probably try it again but not until checking out a few other places first.
Even though I no longer live in Fort Wayne, every time I'm back, I stop here to pick up some coffee beans.
I can still remember the first cup of coffee I ever had from here. Â It was the Ethiopian Yergacheffe, and that was the moment I fell in love. Â Since then, I have had many, many bags of coffee from here. Â There are definitely a few they don't have any more that I wish they did. Â I like a medium roast, and some of my favorites have been the Ode to Joe, the Bali "The Majestic" (oh, Bali, how I miss you so!!), any of their Ethiopian Sidamo ("Extra Tasty" was my #1 favorite), and the Indiana Monsooned Malabar. Â There have only been two that I thought were just "meh." Â Most of their coffee prices range from $12-16 a pound, which might seem rather steep at first, but they are definitely high quality and very, very fresh.
The food here has been wonderful as well. Â The people who work here have always been friendly and helpful, even when it's been really busy. Â I love this place, and I can't wait to go back on my next trip back to The Fort.
I grew up in the coffeehouse culture when I was in High School and my earlier years of college. Â They ranged from conservative, quirky, artsy, collegiate, corporate, and hipster. Â I was fortunate enough to have been recommended this place, and was pleasantly surprised to find it right down the street from Ivy Tech, where I spend the majority of my day.
Old Crown has taken the very best elements from the places I grew up in and masterfully created this one of a kind establishment. Â They roast their own estate style coffees on site. Â Roasting days are the best because you can smell it for blocks. Â Having a dozen or so different roasts at any given time available in whole bean, or they can grind it for you to your specification. Â They also have one of the illustrious Clover machines. Â Pick the bean you want and prepare for the best cup of coffee of your life. Â You want Tea? You'll have to be more specific then "green". Â They have an above average selection and take time and care in how they brew each cup.
Looking for something with a little more kick? Â Well you're in luck. Â They have a full bar and extensive beer and wine list, including imports from all over the world as well as stocking local Indiana beers and wines.
During the week they have a standard lunch menu with wraps, salads, and a soup Du jour that has yet to disappoint. Â Consider yourself a foodie? Â Friday nights they do a full dinner service courtesy of Chef Johnny Bojinoff. Â The food is prepared on site and consists of seasonal fare with the flare of a master chef. Â I had a New Orleans (Cajun) cast iron half chicken with red beans and rice seasoned with ham-hock and a cheddar jalapeno cornbread muffin. Â Amazing! Â The menu for Friday comes out on Thursday night and changes every week.
If you enjoy the finer things in life (coffee, food, booze, etc.) then you have to look no further then Old Crown.
The dinners at Old Crown are excellent now that Chef Johnny Bojinoff was introduced into the mix. Â His signature cast iron skillet half chicken is amazing. Johnny cooks with lots of passion and energy. Great dishes such as rosemary & garlic leg of lamb, west coast jumbo sea scallops, big mama's strawberry rhubarb pie, zesty black bean hummus, chocolate bavarian torte, rigatoni bologanese, smoked gouda chuck burger, johnny's brick pressed cast iron cuban sandwich, granny smith's classic apple pecan baked crumble, and jamaican bbq escolar grill. Â No palette will be disappointed. Definitely a "must taste".
Review Source:I've had coffee all over the country, but Old Crown is my favorite place for a number of reasons.
Number 1: Â The staff. Â Everyone is extremely knowledgeable about their products and are never too cool to stop and talk with you for a bit or discuss the product you're ordering, which includes everything from a cup of tea to a Brandy Alexander. Â To highlight the staff more, the head bartender is top-of-the-line. Â Order one of the special drinks at the bar and watch him. Â I guarantee you'll be impressed.
Number 2: Â The products. Â The coffee at Old Crown comes form all over the world and roasted right there in the store. Â If you're there when they're roasting and love the smell of coffee, you'll be hooked. Â At least, that's what happened to my Dad. Â Their selection of alcohol rivals that of J.K. O'Donnell's, but allows their customers to buy and carry out the beer they offer. Â I won't forget about their food, either. Â Their soups are made daily which are always quite tasty and flavorful while their wraps are handmade at the time of ordering.
Number 3: Â Location. Â If you're a college student at IPFW (like I was), this is your place to study or take a break from class. Â With free wi-fi, you're golden.
Number 4: Â Quality. Â If you're looking for a local coffee shop to call your 3rd home that isn't commercial like Starbucks but with the same reliability, this is the place to go. Â I've never had a bad drink, engaged with poor customer service, or had a negative experience. Â I've been a regular for years and whenever I make a trip to Fort Wayne I always stop by to say hi and have a drink with one of my hometown friends.
Old Crown is the best coffee shop in Fort Wayne, hands down!
They have an enormous selection of coffee, roasted on the premises. Â Their special Clover single-cup coffee maker makes an incredible cup of coffee. I've done the head-to-head comparison of coffee prepared with the Clover versus the drip method and, well, there's really no comparison!
The small selection of food is decent and fresh. Â But, stay tuned, because they're moving across the street soon to a bigger place and creating a more extensive menu!
They have a nice variety of beans to choose from.
Old Crown also has the Clover machine. Â If you don't know what that is, it's a very high-tech single-cup coffee brewer that makes the best cup of coffee ever. Â
I enjoyed my 9th Degree of Darkness coffee that was made on the Clover. Â It would have gone perfectly with some sort of chocolatey dessert... mmmm.... next time I go back I will definitely get a cookie or some sort of baked goods to enjoy with my coffee :)
