I can't believe I just got to Omaha and wasted my first meal on this crap.

I blame myself. My friend and I were starving. It was 100+ degrees out. We had just flown in and checked into the Hilton on Cass. We wanted to go some place close by for lunch. Instead of referring to Yelp, I asked the Concierge. Big mistake.

I should have known this was going to be bad. I had been out to Omaha a few years back to catch the College World Series. I instantly recognized "The Matt" as the place where I saw not one, but two CWS partiers puking their brains out near the bar. Another terrible reminder was the "Lobster Catch" -- essentially one of those claw-grabbing game machines that kids play in arcades trying to snag stuffed animals and basketballs with -- except this one is filled with live lobsters. Nothing like plunking down $2 a shot to torture a poor lobster by picking it up and dropping it on its head a few times. Good thing lobsters aren't in charge.

Seeing the menu was the last sign I needed to know that what was to follow would be spectacularly unmemorable. But it was too hot to abort mission. And 22oz. beers make any bad situation a little bit better.

I had the "The Matt" salad or whatever it's called. We're planning to eat and drink a lot on this trip, so I thought I'd try to go healthy. Mixed greens, blue cheese crumbles, almonds, craisins, grilled chicken, some nondescript vinaigrette -- you get the idea. The whole thing was just blah. At least season the grilled chicken a little bit, people.

My friend had the beef brisket, which was a little more exciting, but nothing special. The whole experience felt very akin to a meal you might have at the Houlihan's in Penn Station. Needless to say I did not come out to Omaha to eat like I'm living it up at the Houlihan's in Penn Station.

Oy. Every now and then I go off the Yelp radar and pay the price. This afternoon is one of those days. If you're into lobster torture and booze, then I can recommend The Matt. But go elsewhere for food.

My french onion soup and salad were ok, but it sure took a LONG time to get it! The restaurant was full, but it shouldn't take more than a half hour to get food!
