Lovely! Â Excellent ambiance, friendly and nice "locals" place. Â The foods seem to be all made in house (esp: Corned beef hash, the Old Bay Sausage [OMG DON'T MISS!], excellent jams, etc) and there's a real sense of love and pride in what they do here at OBT. Â Enjoyed a lovely brunch there and will definitely be returning! Â Thanks for a perfect morning with great food!
Review Source:Had a great lunch there Monday, our first visit.  The space is cozy and we were seated with a view of the bay in the front room.  We started with the fried pickles and pineapple salsa, both of which were fantastic.  The owner makes his own pickles and the effort shows in the final product.  I couldn't pass up the cream of crab soup which was loaded with lump crab, not just the shreds found in many incarnations  My vegetarian companion had a simple but well done quesedilla with the same tasty pineapple salsa and a side of hand cut fries.  The Rise and Shine Burger was a hit with the more carniverous companion and after the cream of  crab soup my appetite was whetted for more crab.  I went with Norman's Chicken, smothered with lump crab and ham and a mornay sauce along with asparagus on the side - a stellar combination that left me stuffed to the gills. Â
My companions, however, could not pass up the desserts. Â The desserts are home made and decadent - chocolate cake with peanut butter glaze and a chocolate decadence type dessert were finished off in a flash. Â
The service was personable without being intrusive. Â There is a clear family effort going here, so staff seems to have a vested interest in making you a returning customer. Â Owner Doug is a friendly presence and keeps things moving without the sense of being rushed. Â Chef Norman came out to check on us as well - it's always nice to have a face to go with the food prepared. Â I noticed other reviews were relatively soon after this restaurant opened, I think many of the wrinkles have been ironed out. Â
What I hope to see in a place like this is not so much constant perfection as much as constant movement and growth. Â I rated it highly because despite the distance it is a place I envision coming back to on a regular basis, both for the food and the friendly ambiance. Â Next up - breakfast!
Sub par at best. 45 minutes for a club sandwich? 40 dollars for lunch including a free appetizer which consisited of mainly onions and pickels instead of crab dip.....I understand that Old Bay seasoning is a way of life down here but does it need to be on everything? There were problems with every table around us....Doug seemed very nice and the servers were sweet, but in need of some training. I understand that bad shifts happen and being in the buisness, it pains me to write this....But the good reviews of this place are greatly misleading. Â Sure it's cozy, but if the food isn't any good, what's the point?
Review Source:I have to start by saying that I LOVED the atmosphere of this place - quaint, cozy, and seemingly full of locals. The staff members were incredibly friendly and welcoming, and made me feel right at home. The menu looked good - it was hard for my husband and I to choose our entrees as several items sounded especially tasty - but the food didn't quite live up to our expectations. We had the crab cakes, which seemed to have a little too much of a floury, pasty filler and not enough large chunks of crab. I think they could have used some chopped green onions or something. My husband liked them okay, but I just found them too mushy and bland and couldn't quite finish mine. And, we neglected to ask about the Market Price (our fault), and found out too late that the crab cakes cost right around $30. Eek. They definitely weren't worth that. We did like the sides, however - fries seasoned with Old Bay and a really yummy sweet potato dish topped with pecans. It was almost like having dessert! We also had the crab pizza, which just needs a bit of tweaking to be really a winner. The flatbread crust and homemade mozzarella were fantastic. However, it was quite bland - and yes, I did add some extra Old Bay AND salt on top in an attempt to remedy this. I think if the onions in the pizza were exchanged for garlic, and a bit of salt was added to the cheese, it would really have brought out the fresh flavors a bit more. I hope the staff keeps experimenting with their recipes as this place has so much potential, with a great ambiance and fresh ingredients. I'd love to come back and be able to give it five stars!
Review Source:This is a cute little place in North Beach, Md that has good burger and interesting pizza. Â It is located in a house and the dinning room is quaint and fairly quite. Â
They have an okay beer/wine selection (all bottle beers). Â
The owner is a super nice guy, and tires really hard to make your dining experience the best. Â The staff, ambiance, and location was lovely, but the only complaint I have was some of the food. Â I had a blue cheez burger (recommended by the server) which was a good idea for a burger but it was a bit overcooked for a medium burger. Â The fries were a large cut type, but they were a bit undercooked. Â We also ordered the pizza, which was more of a flatbread pizza but something seemed off with the dough, it was a bit hard and not very good. Â Some of the kids I was with got chicken fingers, they were good, big, plump chicken fingers. Â
Over all it has a lot of potential to be a really cute place in North Beach but i think they need to work on the kitchen with consistency. Â I know they just opened a few months ago, so it is a learning curve; I will definitely go back and try them again.
Loved this little place in North Beach (Thank you Robert F.!). Â I actually selected it from the others based on the one review - thank you Jonathan! Â
So we went for a meal that was not quiet dinner but not quiet lunch and were met with pleasant surprise. Â It was quiet and it was Sunday. Â Business looked slow in most places of town but I imagine it's November and well it's more of the local crowd. Â The dining room was quaint and cozy. Â It had an old world feel but also felt like I was sitting in my kitchen where I grew up. Â It felt comfortable. Â All the servers were super nice and the owner even came out and said hello and greeted us (even the little guy who was diligently playing with this cars). Â
I started with a cream of crab soup. Â And I must say I was expected a spicy overly creamy soup that would not impress... but it was everything but. Â It was perfectly seasoned with Old Bay - nothing spicy - it was just right. Â The creaminess of it was just right too - not jello'y like some creamy soups you see out there... it was just right and the crab must has been as fresh as they could get because it was sweet and just perfect. Â
I moved onto a home made pizza. Â The chef makes his own flat bread and mozzarella so I could not pass this up. Â It was delicious as well. Â Crunchy and just simply right. Â The flat bread was lacking a little flavor but easily overlooked with the rest of the pizza being the way it was. Â
We would have had dessert but there was just no room! Â
The place is great - I would recommend seeking it out if you are in town for a trip or if you just live here. Â Thank you to a great wait staff for making out lunch/dinner enjoyable and fun. Â They were very attentive.
Olde Bay Tavern is North Beach's newest restaurant, in fact they first opened their doors for business just last week! I was hoping to visit on opening night, but of course life/work/uncooperative puppies forced me to change my plans. By the time everything in our household settled down, it was already Sunday, and the weather was perfect for a drive out to North Beach to check out Olde Bay Tavern.
I should have gone on Friday, but more on that in a bit. For starters, the restaurant itself was pretty good. Parking is a problem (such is life in North Beach; more boat slips per capita than parking spots), but once you find a spot on the street, the ambiance of the restaurant is nice and the servers are excellent. If you're concerned about getting great service, you're sure to be happy here.
I ordered a variety of food to see if the chef is up to snuff, and I found the food itself to be a bit lackluster in places. To start, the hush puppies are fantastic. They were large, fluffy, and had a hint of Old Bay seasoning with honey drizzled on top, and melted butter on the side. It was much better than the tiny little nuggets of bread you see at Captain Billy's seafood!
For dinner I ordered the crab quesadillas with french fries and the Salmon dinner with fresh veggies. The salmon was cooked to perfection, although a little on the bland side, and the quesadillas were a bit of a let down, but with good reason. Apparently the restaurant had a busy weekend, and they ran out of pineapple salsa, so there was nothing to balance the slightly dry quesadillas, and the cheese was not fully melted inside, adding to the problem.
When it came time for dessert, I was met with news that the successful opening weekend had caused the to run out of their death by chocolate and also their pineapple upside down cake. I opted not to test the waters with the frozen key lime pie and instead chose the peanut butter pie, which was excellent!
Olde Bay Tavern uses a fair amount of Old Bay Seasoning (hence the name, perhaps?), but they understand the concept of moderation. It's never overdone (perhaps even a bit too light at times), which is a common mistake so I have to give them kudos for that. I will say that the french fries were right on the mark. In my opinion your french fries aren't complete without old bay and malt vinegar, and they've got that spot on.
The tavern has a great social media presence, which I'm sure contributed to their opening weekend success, and if anything they may have trouble with growing pains in the future but that's not such a bad problem to have, right?
