Portions are huge! Â Had come to state college for the annual blue and white game and decided to try this place out on a busy Friday night. Â The place had plenty of seating and we got right to our table after walking in! Â Very pleasant for all the hustle and bustle during that weekend.
Had ordered the wiener schnitzel and the portion was huge. Â The meal included potatoes and red cabbage. Â It needed some additional seasoning, but overall the meal was pretty good. Â You will definitely need to get a 'to go' box for the leftovers
Whenever my parents come to visit me, this is our go-to restaurant. Â The atmosphere is so comfortable and warm, probably due to the lovely fireplace in the middle of the restaurant. Â You really feel at home at this restaurant. Â
The pierogi's are a must. Â They come in a plate of about 5, and my family of 3 devours them in no time at all. Â As far as the other meals we've had there before, the food is really interesting. Â There's quite a mix of German and New York styles, and it usually works very well. Â The portions are very generous, I got a salad once and couldn't even finish it all.
In short, if you're looking for a fun new restaurant to try, Olde New York is not a bad bet. Â You'll get a great atmosphere, good service, and food thats not amazing but you won't find much to complain about!
I've only been here once and that's enough for me.
My wings were ridiculously dry. I ordered them "hot" and they weren't hot at all. In fact, they were too sweet.
The French onion soup had a robust meaty flavor that I really liked. Skimpy on the cheese, but at least the soup itself was tasty.
The service was fine, although my mom ordered a Manhattan and the bartender completely left out the vermouth, which is kinda necessary in a cocktail with only three ingredients. I've now taken to calling this drink the "Olde New York Style Manhattan," which might sound tempting but in fact is quite disgusting. After sending it back, our waitress apologized and said that the bartender admitted to not knowing how to make the drink. So maybe stick with beer here.
This restaurant is based on foods other the German selection because I don't like German food. Â I have ordered salads and sandwiches from their menu and all have been really good. The portions are big. Â The fish sandwich is a foot long! Â I like the ambiance and atmosphere in here. Â The staff is usually really nice, too. Â
This place didn't get 5 stars because of the crab that has the role of hostess. Â She has tight, curly hair and is extremely rude. Â She's so difficult to deal with, it almost makes me not want to come back here despite the good food and fun I always have when I'm here.
Great beer variety on tap and great sandwiches. Â A little far from town but worth the ride. Â Among faves on the menu are Baked brie, the broker sandwich and the central park. Â
Love the NY theme. During the winter, I found it especially nice since they have a fire place you can sit by. Â Ambiance is great. Â
Staff is average. Â I visited so many times I couldn't count and almost always had one of two servers and each time, they didn't recognize me. Â Its one of those things that would have made the experience slightly more pleasant.
Didn't even get to sit down. Â I took the girlfriend out and we decided to eat something. Â I decided to try something new so we walked in and waited to be seated. Â The place was empty except for the bar area. Â After standing for what seemed like 20 mins (probably 5-7 minutes) without anyone approaching us, a waiter walks over and says, "we don't know where to seat you". Â I looked around at all the empty tables, laughed and walked out...
Never been back. Â It's too bad b/c I hear it's half decent.
I don't even want to tell you how much I ate at this place last night because it's appalling, but at least it gave me a good scope of the menu to report to you all. Â
The food is pretty good although you know Herwig's is a bit better and perhaps more "authentic" when considering the fact that it's only 1 replica removed of its 'original' whereas Olde New York gives a whole new meaning to po-mo kitsch (I mean we're talking a replica of a bellefonte joint replicating early 20th century german-NYC immigrant influence replicating Germany...). This kind of explains why you have weiner schnitzel, wurst, nachos and suzy wong eggrolls on the same menu.
On the appetizer list I recommend the Sausage Sampler (with the in-house Brat being the obvious winner); the potato pancakes were OK if deep-fried mashed potatoes are something that interests you. I DO NOT recommend the Curry Wurst which is a sliced wurst covered in ketchup with a side of fries sprinkled with curry powder. This is much different than the promised "sweet-spicy curry sauce" and I was not fooled. I mean ketchup on sausage? Really? I'm all mustard.
You can't really go wrong with the entrees; we split the Badischer Schnitzel which is pounded, breaded & fried veal cutlet with a mushroom-sour cream sauce that isn't as heavy as it sounds. The best part was actually the thick egg noodles underneath which tasted homemade although they probably were not.
Garlic-balsamic dressing for my side salad had little flavor but lots of oil! The Reisling I ordered had no body and tasted a bit like feet. They also didn't have any of the beers listed on the actual menu, which we found kind of irritating after also learning they didn't have the soft pretzels (which, by the way, taste like fried pretzel donuts and are amazing.) Â Most of what they had in terms of beer you can find at places as generic as Chili's with the exception of Spatan and an Oktoberfest or two. Â
Our server ruled and put up kindly with my 20 minutes worth of indecision. She had brains and although busy didn't run around like a deer in headlights (not that I don't understand that feeling, though).
Generally, my favorite part of this place is the painting above the "fireplace" of the bears & bulls goring each other in front of the NY Stock Exchange. There's certainly no better way to pull gristle out of my Weiss Wurst while staring at a headless cow that had just been mutilated by a black bear.
But all this being said, I still really enjoy this place if only because I"m obsessed with sausage. However -- and while I know this is like comparing latkas with french fries - I have to say that it's not nearly as good or home-grown as the locally-raised pork made at both Elk Creek Cafe & Herwigs, I'm sorry to say.
I love this place. I get the Badershier (spelling?) every time i go and it is fantastic. Their wings are some of the best i have had anywhere, not just in State College. They have very good pierogies as well. The pricing is good and the setting is also good. The food is great and this is one of my favorite places in State college and i have been to many.
So good my fiancé and i are having rehearsal dinner here...
If I were in a bigger city I would give this place 3 stars but for State College it deserves 4 stars. Â
Beer Selection: Â 3 Stars - good selection of staple beers but not much in the way of micro brews or lesser known beers.
Ambiance: Â 4 Stars - I liked the naked celing and the fire place. Â It reminded me of a restaurant that I would find in the Bay Area. Â It had a cool pub feeling to it as well. Â However, it was a bit empty for a Saturday night. Â
Food: Â 4 Stars: Â Good for State College. Â To be fair, I tend to hold restaurants in San Francisco to a higher standard. Â The wings had good flavor but I wish they were a bit more spicy. Â Their sausages seem to be their specialty. Â I had a bite of my friends, they are really good and I will have to order the sausage next time I go (that's what she said). Â I had the Hamburger. Â A pretty boring order but the gouda cheese was enticing. Â It was cooked perfectly and delicious. Â However the fries were just ok. Â I'm a huge french fry fan! Â
Service: Â 3 Stars - Eh, nothing special...
Olde New York is the reincarnation of Bellefonte's late Schnitzel's Tavern. Like any reincarnation, a lot has changed; instead of a focus on German cooking, the focus is on the melting pot of New York and therefore a wide variety of Americanized ethnic cuisine, tilting towards European but not solely so. I'll get this out of the way now: It's not Schnitzel's, and if you're hoping for the wide array of German dishes they had you won't find them here.
Olde New York's menu is actually focused on sandwiches and burgers, giving this place a bar and grill feel. They do have entree plates as well, which are correspondingly more expensive; as I generally do not eat sandwiches out, those are what I have had. They still make in-house sausages, except now kielbasa, French garlic sausage, and Italian sausage join the bratwurst. Their in-house sausages are made with a coarse grind of meat -- not good or bad, a fact that just is. Their sausage and cheese plate is tasty but filling. They have a variety of appetizers for American and other tastes.
Their food is workable for the price, and their bar has a reasonably decent selection of beer, biased towards the German side of things. It's hard to complain about anyplace with Spaten Optimator on tap!
The one place where I've had minor issues has been the service. I find I've emptied my water glass and waitstaff are nowhere in sight. Also, twice now appetizers have disappeared from my order. They weren't on the bill, but all the same ... where'd they go?
Overall? Not a bad place to go. Not one of my personal favorites -- but not bad, either. If you're looking for a sit-down restaurant at that end of town and don't want chain food, it's a good option.
Vegetarian Note: There are a few items to choose from, but I would not describe Olde New York as directly welcoming of vegetarians from the menu. I'm not certain they have anything vegan.
