Love this place. It's a really good local bar with generally a good mix. Of young and old. Expect a sports crowd on game nites. They've got a pool table if you're so inclined and a really good beer selection. Not super large but all the beers are really good. Haven't had a bad one yet.

Haven't tried a ton on the food menu but its generally pretty good. Expect to dishes out at. Last $7 for food though. Highly recommend they're fried pickles!

Last stop of the night! It was a good one! The only thing was the first impression I got by the way that the bartender just ignored me. The female bartender would not even address me, I mean looked me straight in the eye and ignored me.. Not even a nice, "I'll be right with you." After the male bartender made my drinks he was very attentive to me and took very well care of me. I asked him to call a cab for me, and he did! :) I had a good time with friends and locals here and would go back.

    The exceptional:
    Nothing.

    The good:
The burger was good sized and meat was good.

    The average:
    The fries.
    16 beers on tap. Now, if they had 30 . . .

    The poor:
    OK service
It is in a strip mall
    Bun was plain
Expensive ($12 for a cheeseburger in a strip mall pub with $6 beers).

    Summary:
I would have a hard time recommending to friends.  There has to be better.  If the burger was $8, I would forgive all of the poor comments--but for $12, you'd better be doing some thing exceptional.

I didn't come here much when I was at UCSC, although I remember making an appearance at their opening night.

    Fast forward 4 years.

Last weekend, my boyfriend and I came here after going to natural bridges beach to watch the blackhawks beat LA. It was a saturday afternoon, and the bar was fairly empty. The selection of beers on tap is memorable. I was so, so impressed with all they had to offer! Happy hour is also great, since it's daily from 4-7 and sunday all day. The bartenders are great, fast, and incredibly friendly. The other patrons were also sociable.

The food was also perfection. I ordered garlic fries, which were comparable to, if not better than AT&T park's. My boyfriend ordered the BLTA- the bread was the perfect flavor and level of toastiness for the type of sandwich.

I actually can't wait to come back here, and i'm sad i did not realize how much of a gem this is in college.

My favorite bar in Santa Cruz!!  Great beer selection, delicious coctails (my favorite is Bulleit Bourbon mixed with a locally made ginger beer called Golden Ginger), and the food is pretty damn tasty too.  Buffalo wings and bomb burgers... mmm.  The staff is great, except one time I had terrible service from a girl who must have been having a crappy day/life. :(

This place is just as awesome as ever. Friendly service, fantastic selection of beer & cider, and great food overall.

Don't be fooled by its stripmall location, it's a great place to hang out and eat/drink with friends and family. *hearts*

Nobody leaves, the people just keep showing up! I suppose its a great sign: With the various options on tap including ginger brew, I could see why you wouldn't want to immediately leave.

There was a slight hold up on some food as it became really busy. It seemed that our waitress became overwhelmed and never got it too us. It was an disappointment for the single person at our table that didn't get served - gladly, said person has friends who share food when one is hungry. I would go back - but would quickly leave-when it became busy.

I've had stuff before, pretty good.

The outside is a mess however, wouldn't want to be a business next to them! Cigarette butts all over the place. I guess they figure that the owner of the shopping center suppose to clean their area for them?

Other than that, it seems they have a vibrant biz.

This by far is my favorite pub in Santa Cruz.
Great location, away from the tourist mumbojumbo. Plenty of parking. Pool table. Good food. Local staff. Wide selection of brew.
and they play all the music that I listen to. Check out Farmageddon Records. This venue pretty much sponsors their music.
PS they have extra spicey wings that are to die for.
I'm always excited to go back.
Oooh and their well whisky is Jameson. Yissss!

When my brother suggested we go to an Irish pub while I was visiting from Boston, I was skeptical. the bartenders were friendly and offered good service. I was able to get some west coast beers I don't see in New England, including a few local to the area. Burgers were big and tasty, but hard to eat. I ended up feeling like a Costanza, eating my out & in buger with a fork. My brother's burger with bleu cheese was awesome - that bleu cheese is not messing around. Overall, nice beer selection and good food.

We normally love the Parish! The food and drinks are awesome, but the service has been anything but great, and in this case AWFUL!!!!

Our waitress was Emily, who was RUDE, unaccommodating, and dismissive. She would not stop to talk to our table, we had to continuously ask for everything, and when anything we ordered finally did arrive, she threw it on the table and would leave before we could get a word in edge wise.

She made it seem as though we were being completely unreasonable and hard to deal with, when all we needed was water (which took at least 30 minutes for a refill), ketchup (to go with the cold fries), and a fork (to eat the salad that was ordered at the very beginning of the meal). We didn't get any beer, and most of our food was from the appetizer menu, so it really shouldn't have been so difficult.

I've worked in the hospitality business and I know that when the restaurant gets busy some things slip, but the problem was that she wasn't even acknowledging our table or ANYTHING that we obviously needed. We ended up having to call over the other waitress multiple times or go to the bar to get things that we'd already asked our waitress for and never received.

One of the times our waitress walked straight past our table when we were obviously calling to get her attention, another time she left while one of us was mid-sentence (asking her for water...again)..and when we handed her the bill and cards she SNATCHED it out of my hands and ROLLED HER EYES at us!! Seriously?! She never apologized for our food being cold, ended up over charging the card by $100!!! And was just all around rude.

Someone needs a job review!!!! Such a bummer because we're always at the Parish for Happy Hour and this definitely put a damper on the place. We might have to find a new spot just so we don't have to deal with the horrible service anymore!!

We've been visiting the Parish for awhile now, and the food and service are fantastic.

Highly recommended:  the fried pickles appetizer (warning!  Cut them up and let them cool down for a bit - they are HOT).  The philly cheese steak is delicious (also available with chicken instead of beef), the shepherd's pie is as good as I've had anywhere, with a huge selection of beers available.
    .
As to the woman below who was offended because the server asked to see her ID:  it's the law.  That you would take it as a personal affront is beyond silly.  I was ID'ed a few weeks ago to buy cigarettes.  I'm 51.  Take it as a compliment.  Grace has served me numerous times, and she's always been warm, polite, efficient and funny.  We purposely go there when we know she's working because she's such a delight.  The rest of the staff are also great.

I strongly recommend people check out The Parish - great, affordable food, nice atmosphere, and great service.

Great Wings.  A great selection of draft beers.  Happy Hour all day SUNDAY!  !/2 off apps and 3 dollar select drafts.  Can be crowded, but usually it's worth it.  For sports fans they have 2 TV's and music lovers, they often have live music.

Belushi and fried pickles (spears, not the usual chips) for first timers are a must.  The beer selection is good and it rotates from time to time.  The pool table is empty more often than not and the place is quiet enough to sit at the tables to eat with kids as long as you get out before 8-9PM or so.  This place is a winner for everyone.

Best Shepherd's Pie I have ever eaten. EVER. The Beef was cooked in Guinness, the salad was nice and crisp, the waitress was nice, and the brews were good. What more can you ask for :)

This review is of GRACE, not the Parish, which is a shame because I actually liked the Parish, before my friends and I had the WORST SERVICE OF OUR LIFE! They just lost 3 customers.

It was somewhat crowded, but I've been a waitress for 5 years, and I'll tell you that serving beer and bar food to about 6 tables is NOT HARD!!

She was rude to us from the moment we walked in. We are all 25 and she rudely asked for our ID's before we even had a chance to order.

There were 3 of us, and we each ordered the same exact beer. She returned a few mins later with just 1 beer. We thought she'd bring it by the next time, but after 15 mins we just went to the bar and ordered the other 2..... she never even acknowledged that she forgot, until she saw the 2 other beers on the table and rudely asked, "Did you pay for those??"

THEN she MADE us change tables, because a party of 5 was coming in. Didn't ask us nicely, she MADE us, which we did with no problem. But looking back, does the Parish even take reservations?? It's a BAR! You sit wherever you can!

We then ordered another round and some deep-fried artichoke hearts. She brought the beers, then 30 mins later came to our table and said, "OOPS I forgot to put your food order in!" with a smile on her face, as if she did it on purpose, I swear! Another 20 minutes and the hearts finally came, but they were room temp, as if they'd been sitting in the kitchen for a long time.

We were sooo frustrated with her, but we wanted to order another round and some wings. My friend was the first to order, and he asked her what ale they had on tap (which there was only ONE, not hard to remember!!) and she RUDELY (once again!) told him she was wayyy too busy and he would need to look at the menu behind the bar and started walking away. I literally had to YELL at her to come back, because I was ready to order. The smug look on her face could've killed someone. His question was NOT out of order- a waitress working at a PUB should know the THREE beers on the happy hour list. Seriously?? I still can't believe it.

So we ordered those beers and wings (finally) and after waiting about 30 mins we were so fed up with her BULLS**T we asked for the check. This was the most happy we'd seen her all night! She was STOKED that we were leaving, and didn't even say anything about the other beers or wings, because she probably didn't even put the order in.

But even the CHECK took forever! Literally, after 45 mins, my friend had to go get our check from the BARTENDER, who was serving at least 20 people, and he still got our check in about 30 seconds. He was VERY nice, and it seemed like he had to do this kind of thing for her a lot.

We were so upset that we even talked to some of the neighboring tables while we were waiting for our check. They all said she could "give some lip" but I seriously think she was singling us out and TRYING to make our night horrible. We were NOTHING BUT NICE the entire night, until the last moment when she smiled that we were leaving. I didn't even want to pay, but once again we are NICE people! She didn't get a tip, I'll tell you that...... GET OUT OF THE RESTAURANT BUSINESS, CHICK!!!

The Parish Pub is my new favorite spot in Santa Cruz. Happy Hour all day Sunday is what I'm talking about.

I don't know about you, but usually, when I go to a bar-esque restaurant, food tends to be mediocre. This is not the case for the Parish. I've become converted into a die-hard fan of their garlic wings. If you go during happy hour, you'll get a really good amount of chicken.

This is usually what I get:

    1. Shocktop or Heff.
    2. Chicken wings
    3. Garlic Fries

The vibe of the Parish is great and if you want to get away from that crazy college party scene from Downtown, this is to the place to go!

One of the best pubs in Santa Cruz. The food is good. But the best part about this place is definitely happy hour (HH). $3 pints and everyday the HH selection changes. Also one of the largest selections of brews.

A fantastic local pub replete with delicious fare and stellar staffing. If I want a good beer or drink on the westside, I'll either go here or the Mtn Brewery. If I wanna grub out, too, I go here.
The college crowd can be irksome at times, but hey maybe them whippershnappers are onto something here....

The french dip special with irish cheddar cheese is DELICIOUS!  The beef is nice and tender, served between a soft and flavorful roll.  The service isn't anything spectacular, pretty much what you expect for a pub type place, very informal but welcoming.  I have only been here for lunch during work, so I have yet to indulge in any of their beers, sad to say!  As far as non alcoholic drinks the iced tea is terrible.

Little did I know that my search for a sports bar with TV's that showed the Pac 12 Network that I would discover a wonderful place called the Parish Publick House. Although I drive by this location all the time, I never ventured in until today - in order to watch a football game. BONUS! I think I have found a new favorite place in Santa Cruz!  I haven't had so much fun in this building in over 26 years! Memories of my days as a youth seeking the underground music scene, I used to come to this space, (located in the Almar Shopping Center on Hwy 1 near Safeway) this great place actually has quite a history in Santa Cruz lore as it used to be the semi-famous Diane's Place in

Jeebus. Just had the Chili which is not on the menu. It's a special.
    Amazing.

I love this place. Just wish they'd get some sound absorbing material for the ceiling or something. Place is CRAZY loud. Plus it would make the acoustics a lot better for music. They book some great music acts and this would really help.

This is the neighborhood bar that you wish you lived next to. Lucky for me, I actually do!

Great beer, great happy hour, awesome wings. I've only had the tangy garlic wings which were fantastic. The fries are the thicker crinkle cut which aren't my favorite, but they do them well here, nice and crispy.

If you like cider beer, the blackthorn cider is a must.

Beers, Bangers, and Burgers.... Does it get any better?

The service was a bit slow, as it was understaffed with regards to waitresses, but the food here is to die for.

We came in on Sunday for the all-day happy hour. Started with the fried Artichokes, and the wings, both of which were on point. I also had the Belushi (I know so much fried food!) and that was to die for.

The only thing that was unfortunate was that my girlfriends Club Sandwich was completely cold.

    YUM YUM YUM!

I went here with my housemates at about 11:30, we were hungry and they had a sign outside with big letters that said the kitchen was open to until midnight. It even said something like grab a menu and a seat!! The place was packed and we learned we had to go to the bar to order. It was about 13 minutes to midnight and we were told the kitchen was closed. When we pointed out that the sign said it was open till midnight it was explained to us that they take the last orders at 11:45 so they can be closed by midnight. Then she said she would ask the cooks, they offered to keep the fryers open so we got wings and garlic fries.

Now, I have worked in the restaurant industry and this is one sure fire way to lose business. A better sign would say open until 11:45.

Anyway, we got a pint and waited for our food. The bartender said she would bring it to us. After we finished our pints we wondered where our food was, we waited particularly long because we figured we had to wait for the fryers to heat up. When we asked about our order, the bartender cursed at us and said our food had been given away and she didn't know why. (We thought she was bringing it out to us so why didn't she know where it was?) She went back to the kitchen to ask the cooks to make more then told us our food would be right out, they are making more for us.

She gave me a free pint and we went back to our seats. She brought out the wings almost  right away and some extra wings and they were AMAZING!!!!! So thumbs up on the food. But then she brought our fries and they weren't the garlic fries we ordered. We didn't notice this right away, it was our first time there and we were eating the wings. When she brought us ranch dressing we asked about the garlic fries, she stopped and stared at us and rolled her eyes. Then without a word she took our fries away. When she brought them back, she commented something like why didn't you tell me that earlier. Um, we thought we did when we ordered!

Anyway, fries were great, great selection of beers, but the service def left something to be desired. I understand they were busy, we were polite and the only thing they got right was pouring our beers, but we remained polite and tipped even though she was so rude. We even cleared our own table.

I will give them another try because the food was good, but I will probably try to avoid that bartender.

I love the Parish. It's super laid back, with enough class to not be afraid to sit down, with enough punk feel to be totally at home. The bartenders are all friendly and will give you suggestions if needed.

GREAT beer selection with bartenders that don't look at you crazy if you ask simple questions about their beer! We were lucky enough to be there on a night that they had THREE Russian River beers, which is much appreciated since they are so hard to find in this area.

The food is really good here and served late, until like 12am. Their fried artichokes, while they may sound like typical bar fare, are not. They are delicious!! I've eaten everything from apps to sandwiches here and all have been really good. I think they have a happy hour with cheap beer and full size apps for $5. I know it's from 11pm-12am and earlier in the day too.

The Parish is a SC favorite, especially since it's so hard to track down good beer and food late at night in this county.

Came here about a month ago to celebrate my sister in law turning 21 and because they have an all day Sunday Happy hour!!

It's a nice pub with great beer but it is in a strip mall next to a safeway, which is kinda weird but I guess it can be convenient to do your grocery shopping and then walk over for some good beer!

I really appreciate their beer selection;  they had some of the best Northern California craft brews at a great price during happy hour but I also appreciate that they categorize their beer appropriately;  they have what they call "shit beer" in bottles if you want crappy stuff like coors, budlight, etc.  I respect a place that knows what good beer and shitty beer is and they only keep the good beer on tap.

They also have TVs which are great for watching sports, and they were playing soccer too so they get points for that!

Because they had happy hour all day, we ordered some fries, the buffalo wings which were delicious and some spring rolls that were also really good.

Because the birthday girl was hung over the bartender, who was also super friendly, suggested hard cider with orange juice and it was delicious! Definitely recommend that for a hangover drink! It's sweet and refreshing and with enough alcohol content to help you through that though day.

Definitely a place I will come back to when I'm in Santa Cruz.

    Ordered:
Don't Hassle the Jav (11.00), Beer-battered Artichoke Hearts (4.00*), and Beer (varies*).

    Pro:
*Happy hour everyday (3-6p and 11-12a) and all day Sunday.
Jav - a perfect juicy blend of turkey with avocado, mushrooms, swiss cheese, and tomatos. The dijon/mayo adds a punch of flavor (I dislike mayo, but I can't go without it on this one)! This delicious sandwich is sealed off with two slices of fresh grilled sourdough!
Fries - their fries always seem to be fried in clean oil, because their consistency is superb! Best of all, it comes free with their sandwiches/burgers!
Artichoke - arrived hot: crunchy on the outside, moist on the inside. Cooled it off with the provided Ranch dipping sauce!
    Pool table.

    Con:
    The dirty bathroom.

Great local bar with a laid-back feel. They have a stacked drink menu and offer daily specials on about ten different brews. This place is within walking distance from my apartment, so I'll update this after I try their food.

This place was pretty average, not fantastic, but not awesome.  The food was pretty standard faire, and while it wasn't amazing by any stretch, it was still decent.

I got a chicken sandwich which comes with buffalo sauce, I told them to give me whatever was hottest.  I can usually eat anything at any heat level with absolutely no problem, but their spicy buffalo sauce is completely insane, I couldn't even finish it!  (But thats my fault for not trying it first.)

The deep fried pickles are supposed to be amazing, but they were just ok in my opinion.  They basically take a full dill pickle and quarter it lengthwise, and then fry it.  It tasted ok, but it would have gotten a better crisp on it if they had cut it in to smaller pieces.

The shining thing for this place is their beer selection, which is better than your average bar/pub, and the prices were quite reasonable.

Love Groupon for pushing me to try things on my to do list.

Don't always head to the Westside but I have seen this place a few times and have wanted to try it for awhile now. Not a great location being in a strip mall. Britannia Arms, hands down has the best pub building in the county. But they have done some cool things on the inside to try and give this place a nice vibe.

They have a great beer menu, organized by beer type and origin. Lots of fun new things to try. I had a New Belgium La Folie which is a sour brown ale. Very different from your standard fare so it was fun to try one of the new trends in beer. It was tangy and had a slight hint of sweetness underlying it.

The Mattman had his standard fare of a hard cider. Still waiting for this supposed rennaisance in ciders to hit Santa Cruz.

The menu looks awesome. There was so much I wanted to try, some great looking sandwiches. They have traditional pub fare like bangers and mash and shepherds pie. I will need to try their shepherds pie someday to make sure they are truly legit.

We finally decided to try The Belushi. We were living large and went for it. From the menu description: 'Not approved by the AHA. A stuffed half pound-er with blue cheese, bacon, Aged Irish cheddar, and American cheese. Then we beer batter it, deep fry it, and wish you all the best - '

How can you not try this? We decided to split this upon the wise advice of our server and it was actually pretty tasty and worth writing home about.

Was little bummed that for a pub trying for a British feel they had no idea what my new favorite drink, the Pimms Cup is, but hey something for them to discover perhaps.

Can't wait to come back again and try more fun beers and great food.

    I love beer.

Not namby-pamby watery American mass-produced beer, but good, strong, beers of the world, and American microbrews.

If I were to open my own pub, the beer list would look a lot like that at Parish Publick House- except they've got about fifteen I would have forgotten!

Great atmosphere, great beer selection (both bottle and tap), and a very tasty and affordable bar menu, with something to please everyone. (Our favorite is their salmon fish and chips, made with beer batter!)

They even serve a couple watery American beers for your friend that doesn't know any better.

Add in the pool table, well-stocked digital jukebox, and frequent live music, and what's not to love?

Was here last night to hear a friend's band play. There was a good number of interesting people here, which is unusual for Parish. This is a testimony to the band, not the venue.

I had a pretty good time throughout the night, except when I had to deal with the bartenders. First the bartender charged me $7 for a vodka tonic (when other people I knew got them for $5 that night). Then, when I got the bill at the end of the night (I had to keep an open tab because they have a $10 minimum), I saw that they charged me for three drinks that I didn't buy. Two of them were bought by my acquaintance, and I actually saw him pay for these two drinks earlier with cash. When I asked one of the bartenders about it, she said that no, I bought those drinks and that my acquaintance never paid (not true!).

I know it was a busy night, but it's not my first time at a bar by any means, and I've never been charged for so many drinks I didn't buy--even at places that were way busier.

If either of these incidents occurred in isolation, I would have been willing to give this place the benefit of the doubt. But the way it all happened on the same night makes me think that the bartenders scammed me intentionally. I'm a pretty friendly and likable guy, and I rarely have problems with people. I patiently waited for them when they took forever to take my drink order, and I gave them no attitude whatsoever. My only explanation as to why I got poor service is that I showered and wasn't wearing a chewed up plaid shirt.

    I won't be back for a while.

Don't  be swayed by the fact this place is located in a strip mall...as the adage goes, don't judge a book by its cover.

This place is, as Yelp would say, A-OK!

The fries are terrific, crispy, as they should be. The burger is quite fine; it's a nice place to hang out.

    Stop in!

Only real minus is temporary: the parking lot is a MESS due to construction of the new and improved Safeway. Avoid the mess, park on the street!

We came here for lunch expecting some rockin' pub grub and beers after reading all the glowing reviews.  When we walked in around noon, and the only person working as a bartender.  We seated ourselves and waited...and waited for her to get around to coming over even though there was nobody in there besides a few guys at the bar.   I zeroed in on a beer or two I'd like to try, but somehow found the ones that she didn't have.  My friend asked for a vodka drink, but was told the "owner is shifting away from anything besides whiskey...wanna try some?"

We both tried the burgers, which took forever to materialize.   Mine was overcooked and dry, tasting generic despite the add ons.  My friend's came out dripping with grease yet overcooked.  The meat was pretty good, so they probably would have been quite tasty had the patties been cooked properly/as ordered.

Everything about the service and food was out of sorts, so I'm tempted to try this place again to see if it was an isolated incident.  If the norm, it's pretty clear people are letting a few cold ones cloud their judgement.

Better food than any pub I've been to in England or Ireland! But that's setting a pretty low bar.
Very good beer menu, and I've only had the veggie sandwich, which was quite good but could have used more avocado. Fries, acceptable but not exceptional.
Music = too loud, not so hot. Pool = cool, but I don't really play.
It's really about the beer. Really.
The service is quite good as well. And for me, a Westsider (not one of those "moneyed"ones someone above referenced, not sure I actually know of any either), it's great to have a relaxed, hang-out place like this in the neighborhood.
