Fun neighborhood bar in CDM. Â Nice cold beers and good burgers (Try the Flame Burger with everything on it...mmmm). Â Don't expect to be waited on hand and food here, you can't be afraid to walk up to the bar to order your food, but expect friendly conversation and a good time. Â Nice to have bars like this in the Newport Beach area.
Review Source:Love this place. Came here to watch soccer and the environment was really laid back. The food (had flame burger w/fries & the BLT w/onion rings) really hit the spot with a nice cold beer. It gets hectic so sometimes you have to go up to the bar and order from there - but its all good. Bartender Marcelle is HILARIOUS, super sweet+witty and makes one hell of a margarita!
Review Source:Now, I had my first "date" with my man here, so I have sentimental reasons to like this place. My guy and I went back there this past Friday. We get there around 4:30 and Carla is bar-tending.
I hate to be negative..but Carla sucks so bad, she needs to be fired.Or re-trained.One of the two. No smiles at us, no warm greeting, very cold. My guy asks about happy hour beer specials, and she is shrugs her shoulders like, of course, we have some. But dammed if I'm gonna tell you about it!!
Then, you will be waiting for a refill while she talks to other people. That is annoying. A good bartender scans the bar and keeps his own pockets full by keeping everyone's drink above 1/4 low. Two, count em 2 guys walked in, sat at the bar, put their money on that bar, and waited. She continued to talk to others, ignoring them. So they took their fat billfolds and went to elsewhere.
Then, to top it all off, she is over 55, gotta be, and she dresses like she was 25. No, wearing a white shirt with a black bar at your age is not a good idea. Nor is having long raggy over dyed hair, with no makeup. Overall, the picture of her was...YIKES!!
So sad. I hope the owners read this. They need to send her back to bar tending school. And in the meantime, hire a professional bartender, that place could be rocking!
Thank God! A somewhat whole-in-the-wall somewhere remotely close to all the uppity in Orange County. Not that I am complaining, but it's nice to be brought back to reality once n a while :)
Casey was a great bartender. My husband and a friend were in on a Saturday and she was super attentive, even though the place was busy. Perfect personality for a bartender and the environment. Loved her.
Pizza was ok, nothin fancy AT ALL...go with dirty onion rings. Those were good. But all in all, it's just bar food. The sports and bartender were the best part of the whole place.
CDM's version of a dive bar. Friendly staff, decent prices, food is okay - I like that they have veggie burgers and whole wheat buns and will sub salad for fries.
I've watched a few Lakers games here - it's not exactly a sports bar with tons of TVs or anything but it gets the job done.
Good place to catch a sports game or to stop by for a mellow night cap after going out to eat.
Great locals spot for casual food and a pitcher. Â
A CDM Institution that I've been going to for 25 years! Â One of the places that I have to hit every time I'm back in town.
Wall of TV's for sports - have DirecTV and Comcast so you get ALL LAKER GAMES!!! Â Good spot for USC / UCLA games as well.
They're famous for the Flameburger and pizza's are pretty good as well.
Not a ton of parking but spots on PCH right in front usually open.
Small place with a wall dedicated to TV's. Â While in there today I got to watch the X Games, the Matrix, Baseball, Soccer, and UFC all at the same time. Â You order your food and beer at the counter and then wait for it to come out to you.
The main reason why I went here today was because I was fiending a Cheeseburger. The cheeseburger has definitely evolved in the last few years to something in the "Gourmet" category. Â Today I was looking for a classic charbroiled cheeseburger that would remind me of the ones my mom would get me when I was a kid. High-five to this place for hitting the spot today! The cheeseburger here might also be the cheapest burger in the whole area (8.81 after tax and it comes with fries)! The fries weren't that great so I had to add salt, pepper, tapatio and then made a A1 steak sauce and ketchup mix to dunk them in. Then they were pretty good! The burger is in the same class as a TK/Apollo/Yellow Basket/Angelo's burger. So if you're in the mood to get a classic cheeseburger, in a total sports/dive bar setting, and watch 5 different things at once- The Place is YOUR place!
So its a cool place but they have a  not so good looking staff with horrible attitudes and all they do is eat or text on their phone, during the entire shift.
The most memorable was the bartender, Kayla. She looks right at me and when I am ready to order, she completely ignores me! Â Then when I start to wave to her she looks at me and asks rudely, "what do you want?"
I ordered, it took forever to get my drink and the food I ordered. But she didn't have a problem getting her food (she ordered at least two meals while I was there). After I was done with my first drink, I couldn't manage to get her attention and ironically the bar was close to empty... getting another drink was impossible. She finally came over to me all huffy and out of breath and I asked for my bill- it was wrong!
I will never go back there, worst service I have ever had!
Unfortunately this is the only sports bar in the area. Great location for CDM, but vicious bartenders. I was afraid to go to the restroom, fearing the larger bartender would devour my meal before I was able to get back! She was snacking and complaining the entire time we were there. I've heard from many people that this is not a great place to go if you want to be treated like a valued customer. I'll drive 10 mins to other surrounding sports bars.
Review Source:Yep, this is the one dive bar in Corona Del Mar. Â Usually I go here for drinks. Â The bee r and wine is cheap, the cocktails aren't that cheap. Â
The bartenders/waitresses all seem to have attitude, but they are very good and fast on the service. Â I get the impression that this is a place with a ton of locals, as people seem to know each other, and that gives it a "cliquish" vibe somewhat. Â
It's not really a tiny hole in the wall, as they have a large area in front of the bar, with tables and chairs and booths, and a back area with pool tables and even more seating. Â
But reading the reviews here, I definitely need to come back here to try the burger!
I wouldn't call this place a dive bar. But for Corona Del Mar, this is a local dive bar.
You've got bartenders with an attitude (in a good way though) - you've got reasonably priced drinks in semi dirty glasses - you've got a full bar and about 5 beers on tap.
You've got big screens for games - and these people are serious about their football. I like that.
Their burgers are good. Not as good as I was expecting from all the rave reviews - but still pretty damn good. Reminds me of a burger you'd cook on your grill at home. The meat is fresh and you can tell. Â Fries are just ok.
Parking is limited but there always seems to be parking on the streets behind it.
This is as divey as it gets around these parts.
First of all, this is not a dive bar. Â A dive bar is a place that you sort of question whether you should really go in, and while you're there you are always afraid of touching things because you might stick to something, and The Place has no such concerns. Â It's more of just a locals joint / semi-sports bar. Â The beer selection is pretty much a yawn, but the food is quite decent, and the patrons are loud & friendly. Â Sort of refreshing in the upscale & refined surroundings of Orange County and PCH-1.
Review Source:I have a love/hate relationship with "The Place." Â I love the fact that there food and drinks are so reasonably priced. Â It is hard to find that in Corona Del Mar. Â There food is good, too. Â I was surprised by how good their burger was.
However, there is a certain bartender there who is extremely rude. Â I know she works during the day on Friday, because that is when I go in there. Â She is rude from the get-go, and never improves her attitude. Â The thing is I am a former waiter. Â So I am very respectful to restaurant workers. Â So there is no need to be so rude to me. Â Today I went in there, and came home very unhappy. Â From now on I will go somewhere else, and pay more money for food. Â But at least they will treat me with respect.
I love The Place! It is exactly what a dive bar should be. If you go to The Place looking for an awesome dive bar you will not be disappointed. I personally love the bartenders because they are real people. If you are rude to them they will be rude to you but if you treat them with respect they will remember you and treat you as if you have been coming there for years. People who have given negative reviews on the service I can only assume are going in there with the wrong mentality. It's not the Montage it's The Place... I wouldn't go to the Montage to get a patty melt with onion rings and a pitcher of bud light while watching a game. I also wouldn't go to The Place and order seafood... If you are looking for an awesome local dive bar in CDM this is it.
For the food - The burgers are perfect but if you don't eat a lot of meat (like my girlfriend) their salads are huge and the lettuce is always fresh.
Keep it simple - go in the proper expectations and you will have an awesome time.
I have been frequenting The Place off and on for the last ten years. Â The food hits the spot when watching a game. Â The drinks are very reasonably priced.
The bartenders are very nice with the exceptions the older shorter woman (I won't mention her name though she looks like Carla from Cheers on an off day). Â She is rude to most people and should be fired.
I would avoid The Place if "Carla" is behind the bar ... Any other time well worth stopping by to watch a game and enjoy the GREAT "Flameburger"
XXOOXX
Huey
If you like a place to get to know people and find your spot at the bar this is it. Mostly locals here but everyone is super friendly and welcoming. Don't be scared of the bartenders they have a lot of attitude and sarcasm but are great gals! The food is your typical bar/grill food but for that I think it's good stuff!
If your a french fry nut like me you will love theirs and the best homemade ranch dressing. For your first time, order the famous flame burger! The Place is the only unpretentious dive bar in cdm and you will always leave with a new found friend and a good buzz!
My gal pal and I cruised around for a spot to hang out at and came across this...The Place. Â
We didn't know what to expect except that it was a sports bar so we were more than a little  intimidated when we walked in and everyone, including the bartender, gave us a very thorough lookover.  We hurriedly found two chairs at the bar and sat down.  We ordered our drinks (I gave my friend some grief for ordering WINE at a place like this - I had beer, ah-thank-you) and peered around to familiarize ourselves with the surroundings.
It quickly became apparent that this place was a place for regulars. Â Everyone knew everyone, all ages and all races. Â Sounds cozy except when you're not in that social network. Â
We decided to settle in for an hour or two so we ordered a club sandwich and a dinner salad to share. Â I'm going to guess food isn't their forte since the dinner salad wasn't more than a plate of romaine with a slice of tomato on top. Â The club sandwich was a slight improvement except the bacon was 1/20th degree away from being inedibly burnt.
Eventually we decided that we should move it along and make room for all the regulars who came pouring in. Â We politely declined to order a second round and asked for our check (pretty decent drink prices). Â We paid the very reasonable tab and made our way back onto PCH to seek out more adventures.
I'm a regular here and I love this place! Its a hidden gem dive bar in CDM. We always go here after our softball games with the entire team and eat dinner and drink beer!
Marcelle is awesome, she's from NY and has a great personality, she's super witty and sweet!
I love and typically order thier chicken veggie taco, you order one and it comes with two tortillas and a lot of topping so you can easily make 2 stuffed tacos for $3.25! I also like their pizza. My friend swears by their BLT so if you're a BLT eater definately try theirs. I like their fries and they have good ranch to dip them in!
It gets pretty packed sometimes and its small so sometimes we have to leave and go other places but its one of my favorite dive bars.
The Place is a local sports bar in CdM that has TVs, a bar and greasy spoon food like burgers, pizza, sandwichs, fries, etc.
In general the food is not very good, but as long as you know when Mary is working you should enjoy yourself because she is the best bartender there, she works Sundays and during the week but not sure which
day(s). Â
If you want to watch many games on tv or the one big game of the year, The Place is your local sports bar to go to. Beer is usually pretty cold and the cocktails are good too.
The place has the best atmosphere for any sports! The food is great and the bartenders are friendly. Great TV's, friendly people, and amazing food.
It's also a great bar to just pop into any random day. It's where all the non-snobby locals hang out, and it's a good time any day.
Order the flame burger!
I go here all the time --- best kept secret in town. Â Top 5 reasons to go to The Place (in order):
1) Â Sports!!!!!!! Â Lots of TVs, no annoying line, reasonable prices and a fun crowd.
2) Cute girls!!!!!!! The bartenders are hot, and some young hotties frequent the place to have a pre-landmark drink . . . or maybe more.
3) A low key, friendly scene. Â Makes it easier to meet some of the aforementioned hotties.
4) The best prices in town.
5) Â Good food . . . see #4.
I almost hate to yelp about this place . . . I'd hate not to be able to get a spot at the bar.
Meet me there Saturday night :)
I wish they had an option on yelp where I can give half a star.  I came here as we were heading to Port ( very good place) as I yelped it on my iphone I only read the top two reviews and wow they were  obviously done by regulars or employees. This place was less than fantastic to say the least and the great service I read about was awful.  It was a saturday night and the bartender was busy talking to her friends rather than serving the remainder of the bar.
It was old and run down. Â I would never step foot in there again. GGGGRRRROOOOOSSSSSSSS.
"La Place" is a great place to hang out. People are fun loving and not self absorbed.
The drinks are priced right and the food is very good. The "Flame Burger" is awesome, an absolute must have.
Should you choose to visit be sure and say hello to Kayla. She's a great Bartender and a real sweetheart. Enjoy!
Meet friends here to watch game one of NBA finals. Lots of TV's but the seating makes it impossible to move around. Only two bartenders and they were bothered when asked for drinks or food. Foods horrible. Draft beer waswarm and the place was dirty.
How does anyone frequent this spot. The short old dark haired waitress was so rude to say after bringing drinks to our table "don't expect to see me again" Wow!
Too manyt great spots to ever want to go back here
As a preface, I love dive bars. This place gives dive bars a bad name. I came here to watch the Final Four, drink beer, and try the burgers. The only thing that was easy to do was watch the game, as they have plenty of TVs.
Drinking and eating they made difficult. Although there were 3 people behind the bar, none of them wanted to take drink orders and basically made it hard for me to give them money. With no one else ordering the bartenders would look away from you and wander into the kitchen to avoid having to serve beer.
The burger was quite small and more expensive then you would guess for a place that advertises serving big burgers. Also, it took forever for them to get the food out, after taking a year and a day to be willing to take my order.
I goto dive bars with the expectation that some old woman with no teeth will be actively trying to get me to order another round and that I will get a big cheap burger in front of me in record time. This place was a fail.
I would only go here if you're watching a game and drinking domestic beers.
The chili dog was AWFUL, the mixed drinks were way too strong and didn't taste good at all. The bartender couldn't even make a few drinks we asked for...simple stuff like a sex on the beach.
Chicken strips were good. Fish and chips were ok.
There has to be better places then this joint in the area.
I have been going to The Place for a long long time. It is the quintessential neighborhood bar owned and operated by locals for years. Â This is the type of place where you go to have a few drinks, maybe a bite to eat, and just hang out with your friends. Â If you grew up in the area, you might just see someone there that you have not seen in a while (happened to me today).
From the front door on PCH it may look like a tiny bar with only a few tables, but there is a back room. Â 5 plasmas in the front, a few regular tv's in the back. Â The place fills up on the weekends during football season and during big games. Â I expect that it will be damned busy at the end of this week with the NCAA tournament starting up.
The Place has a full bar and 9 times out of 10 the bartender has a heavy hand (know what I mean?). Â They've got the usual variety of beers on tap and if you order a pitcher you'll likely get an ice thingamajig in there to keep things chilled. Â And let's face it, you won't finder better priced drinks in CdM.
They serve some great off the grill food here too - flame burgers, chicken sandwiches, tacos, and everything imaginable out of the fryer. Â My favorite item is the club sandwich on wheat. Â You'd better be hungry because the portions here are sizeable. Â
They recently added daily food specials and a hangover meal in the mornings on the weekends - a huge (HUGE) breakfast burrito and a bloody mary for $10. Â Just what you need to soak up the previous evenings evils and get some hair of the dog back in ya. Â It'll get you going.
Parking sucks as it is pretty much PCH or in the residential area. Â There are like 3 spaces behind the bar...pretty standard for the area. Â Just go there and have a good time.
This is a place where you go if you don't care about it being small and looking for a great flame broil burger. Usually, I come to The Place with my department. I was introduced to this place when I first started with the company I work for. At first, I was like what a dump, but it turned out, the people are great there and the flame burger is juicy, and cooked just right. If your department takes you to a place like this, you know what cool and laid back people you work with.
Today, however, I had the veggie burger and it was okay. I regret not getting the flame broil burger though. You don't really come here for the fries even though it's edible and I always eat the fries. Fries are my weakness even though they are not crispy.
It seems like a great local bar to come to.
