I went to planet on a Tuesday night and it was unlike any restaurant I have ever been to. There was a live band for Italian night with guests who would come up and sing a few songs. There was even a Sinatra singer! I had the chicken Alfredo and my bf had the three cheese Alfredo. We were not disappointed. Even the mixed drinks were pretty good and not too strong.
Review Source:I just experienced Italian night at the Planet! It was a fabulous immersion into the Italian culture! It started out with the best lasagna outside of Italy! The wine complimented the meal perfectly. While dining a beautiful video of Italy silently showed on the various wide screens placed around the room. And the live Italian music pulled the whole experience together like nothing I've ever experienced before! Anthony Lane was the main vocalist (beautiful voice) with various amazing guest singers including a wonderful Dean Martin impression of "That's Amore"!!
Definitely a fun night! I got to meet the owner, Anthony Lane Controneo, as well as his beautiful wife Grace and their gorgeous little daughter.
So, whether you're Italian or not you can't miss Italian night at the Planet Gemini! I highly recommend it. Overall, great food, great live music and great service!
I hear that comedy night is also wonderful, I'm looking forward to experiencing that too!
This review is specifically for Friday and Saturday comedy nights, as that's all we ever go to. Cover is $10, the friendly cocktail waitresses will bring food and drinks to your table throughout the show, which is a bit spendy but very good. The host (owner), and occasionally co-host have their own bits, and then 2-3 comedians come on. Occasionally they'll have some pretty big names on stage, but even then, they're almost always funny. After the show they clear out the tables and either bring a DJ or a live band on stage. Live band nights are the best. There's also a karaoke room that's nice to chill in, whether you sing or not, and a no-drinks-allowed patio that's a good place to pick up conversations with strangers. The bang for your buck factor here is amazing. $10 for a solid comedy show, then a DJ or a band, and access to a second lounge with karaoke. The staff and regulars are all very friendly. Everyone's always in a good mood. The crowd is a big mix of folks from guys in suits and girls in cocktail dresses to folks in grubby work clothes. Mostly an "older" crowd, late 20's onward (and the club is now exclusively 21+). Lots of regulars here, good place to get to know people if you keep coming back. It's kind of a small venue, but at the same time perfectly sized for what it is. Pretty safe joint too, not much riff raff and the bouncers and staff aren't afraid to take care of business when needed.
Now with all that said, I'm a small town guy, I've never been to a big club in "the city" or anything like that. I like the kinds of places where you can shake hands with the owner and get to know people. Where the staff recognizes you and says "Welcome back, nice to see you guys again" when you walk in the door. So to me, Planet Gemini is perfect.
I've been here twice for concerts. Nice intimate setting, sure it's small but that's why it's so "intimate"
The food is good and the service is so so.
I would definitely return for another show... Hotels, Medflys again? Yes, please.
Tip; Make certain to order VIP seating for shows or you *WILL* be standing for the entire concert and NOT in the front of the stage but in the back of the room.
We had fun...but the one bartender sucked! Â He would take my empty glass, but never ask if I wanted another! Â I had to wait and flag him down and he wasn't even serving anyone else. Â My friend ordered shots of Patron, which I was afraid to do cause' not really a fan, but then, I was pleasantly surprised as it was WATERED DOWN! Â Even the real Patron drinkers were DISSATISFIED, they didn't order anymore Patron shots cause' they didn't want to waste anymore of their money. Â The band was awesome and the comedy good...but bar service not so much.
Review Source:Awesome place to hang out pretty much every night, love their cumbia and salsa nights on Sundays also karaoke, comedy and food, they have lots of things you can do every night make sure to stop by to support this bussiness its awesome!!!!! 2 bars to dancing floors and lots of friendly people you will love it!!!!!!!
Review Source:The comedy show that we saw was good, but the comedy club was not great. They have a very small restaurant, but I didn't look at the menu. The location isn't great. If you enter from the front, you have to drive in through a very narrow driveway to get to the parking lot in the back. They don't have a 2 drink minimum like most comedy clubs, so that was nice. And the comedy show that we went to was very cheap ($10/person). If I was in town and they had a good comedian scheduled, I would visit them again.
Review Source:Five star potential....
The four of us went to a comedy show at Planet Gemini one Friday night. Â For $10 we were able to see to very good comics over more than an hour and a half. Â The cost would have easily been double in many other clubs and would have required two drinks per person. Â Seating was nice and the comics were very easy to see and hear.
So, why not five stars?
Simply the service. Â Now, I don't want to make it sound like the wait staff isn't doing their job, the problem is they need at least two more people working the floor. Â Instead you are left with empty drink glasses or having to go up to the bar to find someone to take your order. Â In turn, Planet Gemini is selling less alcohol and food and losing a lot of sales. Â Maybe I should thank them for saving us money?
Oh, the other complaint is the food portions are too small for the cost. Â We tried the combination platter (4 items for $30) which seemed like a good idea until it arrived. Â The size was too small for the amount of food.
With that said, we are planning on going back! Â I am going to contact the management and offer some suggestions on how to improve the experience there. Â There is a lot of potential!
My girlfriend and her brother had a couple drinks here a while back and were given 'free' passes to their comedy night so we decided to take them up on their offer. Well, after three attempts to use the passes without success (each time they claimed it was a "special" event, no passes aloud) we have given up. I don't feel like paying 15.00 to see a couple of comics I have never heard of perform at an empty club on NORTH FREMONT!! Just because you got interviewed by Jay Leno during a Jaywalking sketch, does not mean you were "featured on The Tonight Show".
Review Source:This place is a joke. I wish I could give it less than one star. 15 bucks to get in on a thursday night? and after you pay way too much to get in you realize there is only 20 other people there... THEN they dont let you drink outside, or even where the dancefloor and music is played... you have to stand in the side bar area with bad music and horribly rude staff. IF YOU DONT WANT PEOPLE BRINGING THEIR DRINKS OUTSIDE PUT A SIGN UP ON THE DOOR TO THE PATIO INSTEAD OF YELLING AT YOUR PATRONS!!! rude rude ruuuude front door girl. yuck. gross bar. waste of time and money!
Review Source:Planet Gemini. What an awful, awful place. Went and saw Jello Biafra there on Thursday night, which was great. Unfortunately the apes that call themselves bouncers are just a bunch of meatheads who can't tell the difference between moshing and real fighting. They were throwing kids down the flight of stairs at the front of the building, and I was assaulted for trying to tell a bouncer the kid he was shaking hadn't done anything. Don't support this team of thugs, don't give them your business.
Review Source:After some shaky initial impressions when I dropped by to buy a ticket a few nights ago, I was quite impressed with this place. A good venue for live music and (I'm guessing) comedy. I stopped by Thursday night to get a ticket for the Friday night Tom Ayres tribute concert (Bob Dylan 1966). The big guy at the door (bouncer?) had no idea what to do when I told him I wanted to buy a ticket, but a minute or two later he waved over another guy, who told me to go inside & buy it. Next I came to the young lady at the coat check counter, who was gabbing away with a couple of guys & completely ignored me. After a couple minutes I started to venture further in, and she finally asked if she could help me. I told her I'd like a ticket for the next night's performance. Still distracted, she asked me if I was with the band. I told her no, (and again) that I'd like to BUY a TICKET for the Friday Tom Ayres show. Success--we had reached a moment of understanding!
The show the next night was great. My buddy & I arrived early enough to get a table, and the place was nicely set up (not the honky tonk dance floor I saw the night before). Someone to seat you, tables with red tablecloths, candles, menus, servers, a nice sight line to the stage. (Late arrivals had to stand--fortunately, toward the back of the room & around the perimeter--NOT IN FRONT of the people seated. Do you hear that, Santa Cruz venues--if I get there early, I expect to be able to see the band--not a bunch of people's backs & asses!) Tom & Le Strange did some great, classic Dylan. Drink service was good. The food looked more than edible. A good time was had (by all?).
Not the best, not the worst. The food is great, but the place is small, so if it's packed you're waiting forever. They do bring in some decent acts, and I usually go for the comedy shows. Definitely not down with it being 18+ and the one line thing... pretty dumb - If you're under 21, then stay home.
Review Source:Horrible place and staff. I went there last night and joined a bunch of my friends up there. $5- $8 cover. Two seperate areas, one for people 18+ and the other 21+. I found it ridiculous that you couldn't bring the drinks into the other room or onto the back patio. Even though you got a wristband there were no in and out privilages.
The atmosphere was so so. The bartending staff was awful. There was this Caucasian bartender who thought he was hot shit. He accused my boyfriend of not tipping when I know that wasn't true. He was very rude. He spilled half the shot down the side of the cup and said something like that is what he gets for not tipping. He wouldn't serve my boyfriend later. We should gave spoke to the manager/ owner. Because tips are not mandatory. It depends on the service.
Then his friend went into a long speech about how his friend was not the liar, but my boyfriend was. They just got a whole crowd of people to not want to go back there. That was my first time and it was awful. The music was just okay but the vibe was all wrong.
What happened?
Used to go here for Beer Pong on Thursday nights. It's been a while, but decided to go with a friend to see if we still had game. Let's just say we need to practice... haha
It's pretty sad that people 21+ have to wait in line with the 18+ crowd. If I am going to pay a cover and spend money on alcohol the least they could do is create a separate line. I guess shots, a few beers and as many beer pong games as we can play isn't enough money to skip it.
2 weeks ago, two table were available. This last Thursday, only one. When Thursday Night Throwdown started, there were always at least 3 but I seem to remember 4. The 21+ area is small so I wouldn't recommend going for drinks. The whole point on a Thursday night is really just to play beer pong and catch up with a few old friends you'll probably run into.
Giving three stars because I haven't seen any shows or anything like that there. Tempted to make it two, but I can't knock it that bad because one night has changed for the worse.
Its one of those places we go when we just want to sit back and have a good time. My boyfriend and I try to go any chance we get, the comedians are always histerical. The bartenders are friendly as well as the servers. The owner does a good job to make us feel welcomed. After reading all of the negative reviews I wonder if we are talking about the same place.
Review Source:I think compared to the other options in Monterey (Hippodrome; don't get me started, Dock Rickets; Eeeewwww, Mucky Duck; I have a three word saying for the Duck and it starts with an expletive) this is the spot! Â I went there one night after the Blues Festival a couple years ago and saw the best live Blues performance, which was opened by a hilarious stand up comedy show featuring Chris Reid (Kid from Kid n Play). Â Chris proceeded to come and dance with my date and I. Â It was a blast!
I went to The Planet for my birthday in August 2009 to watch the E-40 concert. Â E-40 was hella late, but I still had a great time. Â And the owner brought me up front before the comedy show started and had a shot with me for my birthday.
Every time I've gone I've had a great time. Â The staff is dressed professionally, the crowd is a little more grown up than what you find at the other clubs and I've always been treated well and gotten good seats for the shows.
I think the only real downside to this club is the location. Â It's all by itself on Fremont St. now, so for those folks doing the bar hopping dance in Monterey it's not convenient. Â However, I say start and end your night there and you'll have a good time. Â Give it chance on a Friday night.
Restaurant review only.
Tough review- part 4-star, part-1 star, all-in-all a 3.
Food was very good, and portions were decent. Â Had appetizer, meals, and dessert, and everything was good. Â Service was great- since we were the only ones there! Â
Doubt we'll be back, and I would suggest that, unless you're going there for a show, you just skip and try another place.
the comedy shows are good. Â My main beef is the bar service. They are not friendly and have the most watered down booze ever. I paid 7 dollars for a vodka martini extra dry that tasted like water with a bad after taste. I had a extremely difficult time believing there was alcohol in the drink. If I return, I would only get beer there since it comes from the tap or bottle.
Review Source:Well ive been to the old location several times and had good experiences there. I attempted to go to the new location this weekend. The advertisement said it was open and doing a comedy show. I was really looking forward to going and enjoying some laughs, drinks and dancing. I called and called the phone rang off the hook and then rolled into a fax machine. What business doesn't have at least a prerecorded message????!?!?! The location was on the same street I was staying on so I passed by it a few times during travel and noticed it was obviously not open like they had advertised!
Review Source:Well lets see, I have taken the time to read the other postings here and all can say is wow is my experience different from the first two. I have seen countless shows at both the old location and the new one and I've never experienced any of the hassle or the inconvenience those people had. Though i must admit the " 2 Short " concert was a bad one, but it was 2 short so i wasn't expecting much in the way of a good night out. I was dragged out to that one by friends and to be honest id rather eat broken glass then listen to his so called music.
Anyway lets get back on point. The new location is beautifully redone and I've found the food and the comedy to be very good, not to mention affordable. The Comedy shows i see there for 8 to 10 bucks are 60 dollar tickets in LA, Â San Francisco or New York. Â I've even been in there on Thursday night for their Country Night and found the place to be full of very friendly good natured people. I think that some of the memories of the old location may be tainting the waters for people thinking about heading down there. So with all seriousness I say "go in and check the new location out". I think you will find it to be a much classier experience and a dam good time.
I'll be back at the planet soon, hope to see a few of you out there.

During our weekend in Monterey, we wanted to check out some stand-up comedy and after a google search, this place came up.
There were 3 acts tonight and they were very funny. You can check out the website for the performers of the week. Shows are Saturday and Sunday at about 930pm. Cover tonight was $10 pp and drinks from $5 on up. I had a long island ice tea and it was $7.
I could not believe the talent level this place has on the stage for $10. If you're ever in Monterey and want to have a few laughs, I'd recommend this spot.
All said, I'd go again, why not 5 stars? I'm not that easy you know.
Great place to watch some stand-up comedy and have a couple of drinks. Â They also serve good food. Â The recipes are from Steakhouse 68. Â Newly remodled and never very crowded. Â My favorite place to stop at before heading downtown. Â
If you are looking to dance you should go somewhere else.
Last night, after the Reggae Festival, we went to Planet Gemini for another Reggae band. Â First off, I'll tell you it has moved locations. Â We we told to go to Cannery Row and then ended up back just across the street from the Fairgrounds. :banghead: Â That didn't mess with our good mood though. Â What did mess with our good mood, is that when we went into the club, the DJ was playing Euro 80's. Â While I like that music, most of the crowd didn't... and it was obvious. Â It was confusing really, when we first walked in, he was playing old school R&B from the 80's, which everyone loved, then after 2 songs, it was like he purposely changed it to something that HE liked, and the crowd hated. Â The entire club was from the Reggae Festival so you can imagine how they reacted to Europop from the 80's... no dancing, no laughing, nothing.
Now, we had already sat down and ordered drinks while the classic R&B was playing.  Our drinks arrived and my friend gave a card to pay the bill.  Well, apparently there was some computer error with her card  that said the card was stolen and to call the police.  Instead of simply coming back and saying that she'd forgotten to check ID's (to check it was a valid card), the server called the manager, who called the police, who came in and escorted my friend out, in front of all her friends who'd come to the festival.  Can you imagine?!  The cops simply did an ID check to verify that the card belonged to my friend and then released her... but the damage had already been done.  Our night was ruined. Â
It could have been such a simple procedure... but Club Planet made it into a huge, embarassing ordeal. I'm a server too so I understand how quickly and effeciently it could have been handled. Â When I have a rejected card, I always try to help the customer save face by explaining to them quickly and then saying more loudly that our machines have been acting up. Â To make things worse, the manager didn't really apologize or make any reparations, she simply said to take it up with the credit card company and that she'd give my friend her card... before my friend left the card. Â Yes, that's right, my friend even had to go and search out the manager to get her card before she left. Â How's that for consumer care?
I'm glad to see that other Yelper's agree that it's terrible. Â I feel bad for the servers who work there but a club that treats it's patrons like this doens't deserve to be in business.
So mysteriously my review for Planet Gemini from December 2006 disappeared..suspicious.
Long story short-- when I have gone it has been a horrible experience. Two perfect examples:
1) the Too Short show-- where he only played four songs and was an hour plus late... blood on the walls from a huge fight that broke out which caused corona bottles and glasses to shatter... girl throws a metal bar stool at some dood... Â (thank god my friend and I got there early and got a table). There was a misunderstanding between the radio station and the club-- so I ended up shelling out 30 bucks for my friend (the radio station was totally apologetic and they handled it in a professional manner-- the hostess gave me super attitude when it wasn't necessary). Â
2) The DJ played the exact same songs about three to four times within a time span of two hours-- did not really bother to mix. The bartender who came out of the bathroom did not wash her hands.
I love Monterey and I love Cannery Row...but the crowd who comes out to party don't bring good vibes... for a super small city there sure are tons of cop cars at 12 AM. Â Even if the cover is free-- it is not worth the hassle and drama. When I go down there for night life I just usually grab some dinner and walk around.
Walking in here I was totally skeptical about what my night would be like - the place is very 90s cheesy (think fluorescent colors everywhere), with weird colored lights and fish tanks in the walls etc. I figured comedy in Monterey would be pretty amateur, but it turns out that the place is c0-owned by George Lopez, and they get good comedians from all over the place to perform there. The comedy was really good and there were some hysterical jokes. I don't think there's a drink minimum and the fee to get in wasn't too expensive. After the comedy show the place turns into a nightclub, which didn't seem to be too bumping to me, but we left around 11, so maybe it perks up a bit later on....
