This place is pretty awesome and I recommend everyone checking it out at least once if you live in the area. Great for dancing, watching the drag show, hanging out with friends. Extremely strong, cheap drinks - watch out! They will fill your rum & cokes literally halfway with rum...and then you'll feel it...dun dun dun...
Then you'll tell a drag queen that she looks like Beyonce.
Then you'll trip on a step and get kicked out.
I have only been here once but I think all in all it was a good experience. Â My understanding is that the first and third Friday of the month they get packed, Fridays are latin night which is a really hyped atmosphere, loud, shows, exciting. Â I think they have drag shows all weekend on the hour but I am not really sure. Â If you want to gauge how happening this location is, I believe that the the cigarette fenced in area outside is your best indicator. Â If the pen is empty then the bar inside probably is too. Â When they are packed there is not a lot of room for dancing, lines are long for going to the bathroom and not really any where comfortable to sit. Â Still the energy is good and from my experience the DJ kept everyone amped. This is technically a gay bar but you don't need to be gay or in drag to enjoy yourself.
Review Source:I love it here! Â I guess that's because I love gay guys almost as much as my kids. Â Everytime I've gone I've had a drunken adventure! Â Like the time I'd brough my dad, stepmother, very straight brother and sister. Â All first timers. Â We had a ball! Â Drag queens fell in love with my dad (he's a looker) and flirted with him relentlessly, to my stepmommy's chagrin, lol and then I went to the bathroom and was tongued down (like seriously tackled) by a nice looking latina. Â Or the time my friend got so drunk she vomitted right in her lap, sounds bad, it was funny though. Good times. Â
The shows are great! Â I have a friend I used to work with who's in the drag shows and he's amazing *Hi Nate*. Â The drinks will get you beyond drunk (so be careful)and the bartenders are the best I've come across. Â There's no posturing here, no bs, just good music, good drinks, fabulous people.. The works. Â
Love it!
I've dissed three different DJ/dancing venues and the young ones in my life (the ones who take me out to loud places like this kicking and screaming) asked me the other day "why don't you Yelp one you really enjoyed?"
Well, what's not to enjoy about a dance club in Hartford that's actually friendly and where attitude is nearly non-existent? Sure, our gay friends really dig this spot, but a fat old guy in the company of several twenty-something girls and boys was made to feel welcome here on several visits in the last two years.
I hate the fact that I forgot his name, but there was a dee-jay that spent a good half hour of his time discussing very, very old tunes and then showed us what he was made of -- '70s style. The kid couldn't have been older than 30 but with great creativity he placed a couple of tunes into the mix that got my old bones up on the floor.
Drinks are generous and not extremely expensive. Parking can be dicey but if you persist you'll get a space nearby.
I suggest that if you're gripped by dance fever, come here, leave your attitude and phobias at the door and dive into a good time!
If your in the Hartford area and looking for a gay bar on a Friday/Saturday night, The Polo Club would probably be your best bet. Â I haven't been by since the renovations, but a good time is always to be had at Polo. Â The crowd is mostly off the hook gay boys with sprinkles of lesbians, bi-girls, and hags here and there. Â They have drag shows (hopefully they've upgraded the girls from a few years ago) and a mixture of hip-hop, house, r&b playing in between for your dancing pleasure. Â The drinks are always strong, and for some reason every time I go, there is always a little gay boy that wants to battle me on the floor. Â Well, BRING IT ON, SON! Â The scene can get tired fast, but I still love you Polo.
Review Source:this gay bar serves up the warm ambiance of a long-established neighborhood bar, together with unusually large cocktails and a penchant for pageantry. unlike the ethnically-homogeneous queer spots so typical of larger cities these days, the crowd at polo is multifaceted. although the dance floor's reggaeton and nouveau r&b inclinations aren't my speed, the dj sets are, on many nights, punctuated by always-entertaining drag shows, which feature talents ranging from novice to sublime. check it out on a saturday--or perhaps on a friday if chez est isn't doing it for you (the hartford gays seem to divide their weekend nights between the chez and polo and migrate unpredictably between the two).
