This is my favorite PPC thus far. Â My first few visits were 'just because' visits as several of my friends had never been to a PPC. Â I've since become a fixture due to great food, and awesome bartenders who keep me coming back. Â
The staff is all super friendly, and even management finds time to engage the customers. Â Nothing but great experiences with this location! Â A definite on my recommendation list.
Best Pizza in Town... Seriously!
My family loves this place! We've never had a bad pizza. I have eaten at the bar, in the dining room, and have ordered out plenty of times. The dining room service can be slow. My husband and I usually have a better experience sitting at the bar. The bartenders are friendly and they are always on top of refilling drinks and making sure our food is out on time. This is our go to place for pizza and beer on a date night. They always have great beers on draft. You can join their mug club if you're a serious beer lover. Be sure to take advantage of their Pie Rewards Card!
Had the special popcorn shrimp appetizer to start. Â It was lame. Â 8 small shrimp in beer batter and dipping sauces. Â Not really enough to share. Â Ordered the spinach tortellini in pesto as my meal. Â Meh. Â Decent size portion, but sitting in a thick paste of pesto. Â Will stick to their pizza from now on.
Review Source:Great pizza. Could have used a few more scallops on the Bar Harbor pizza (there were like, 5 tiny pieces on the whole thing), but all in all a decent dinner.
Nachos were... meh. No flavor to them. I really wanted to try the Lobster sliders but boyfriend vetoed that. Â Don't get wine there. Terrible selection of mediocre wines. I did try the homemade root beer and it was pretty good. No ice in the glass (which I like cuz I'm a root beer purist).
Love the selection of crusts you can choose from. I wanted to try the gluten free but boyfriend also shut that down (he was kind of being a dick that night).
We got the Bar Harbor on garlic crust and the Dead River on Basil. Didn't taste the basil in the basil crust but then again there were a lot of flavors on the Dead River. I did love the ricotta though. In my humble opinion, ricotta is often overlooked as a superior pizza cheese option.
Our waitress was a little.... brash. Her introduction to us was "Hi". And not even in a peppy or excited way. Like she knew us and maybe didn't like us. She was helpful in pizza selection but kept inserting that she was a vegetarian when we asked about the meat pizzas. I mean, Â maybe be nice to the people whose generosity determines how much money you make.... just saying.
Also, half the parking spots in the parking lot are designated for the Dunkin Donuts next door... um, what?
Portland Pie is one of my favorite pizza places around. Â My fiance's first visit here and she gets something other than pizza! *gasp*
My buddy and I split a Harbormaster... always a good choice. Â My fiance enjoyed her ravioli. Â Surprisingly, she said it was better than some other places she's been. Â She said the flavor was good and that there were enough ravioli in the meal to be filling.
Service was ok - of course I'm used to lunch service at the Manchester location. Â Late evening dinner is a bit more relaxed, a little too relaxed maybe? Â Walking in the door we wondered if anyone saw us. Â Eventually someone came over to seat us.
We live in MA state but very close to Nashua than other towns in MA.
We wer elooking for a beer/pizza place and found this one.
We tried their beer sampler ( $4 for 4 beers) and I liked one got it for 16 Oz.
They have a good variety of Pizza and my wife is a vegetarian but this place offers quite some options for her. They can also make half-& half ( 2 different set of toppings on given pie) which is great..
I got their Noreaster (Buffalo chicken, spicy) and it was amazing with cold beer, My wife liked her vegetarian Pizza.
Since then we have been there 3 times and liked it everytime.
They have a small parking lot and some street side parking. Would be nice if it was larger.
So, since I was being lazy and actually ENJOYING my vacation (or trying to at least), I did not Yelp Nashua places while I was home this year. Which is a damn shame since it was becoming a holiday tradition. What I will say is, this place was not here the last time I was in downtown, I went here one of my last days, and had such a good experience I feel compelled to write about it EVEN THOUGH I'm back in NYC now.
First off, this place is in a terrible location. It's between the Dunkin Donuts and the Unitarian church in that strip of shops that includes the forever Mint Cafe (a sad Chinese joint that belongs around the corner from my apt in East Harlem, not downtown NH). So I don't know if anyone would even find this place. But after two afternoon fails to have lunch at La Caretta and then Margaritas, both of which are closed around 2:30 PM / 3:00 PM, this place caught my eye on the way to the latter.
It's very swanky on the inside, a testament to how my hometown wanted to develop the area as sort of a walk-along-the-river type atmosphere. It fits. I was also with Katie T., who is legit FROM Maine, and actually knew what this place was. In our attempt to be skinny bitches, we hadn't eaten all day, so what followed was a feast- I got quesadillas and these parmesan breadstick things to share with her, then got some kind of burger on focaccia bread that was on their specials menu. I will admit that the bread choice was a little strange, but everything was so delicious that I really can't say ho hum about it. I might actually make a point to go back next time I'm in Nashua.
Out waiter had a ponytail. He was a little awkward, but Katie and I were having a fun (and presumably loud, knowing me) time catching up, and he was both attentive while giving us a wide birth. There was also some cute dudes at the bar, so there's that. I might pick this place over Blaggards as a fun night spot, but I should mention... many families with kids were there, so it might not get too wild (like Nashua EVER gets wild). Nice addition to downtown though. I'm a fan.
Went there with the wife and kids to check it out after passing it for the umpteenth time and we're glad we did.
Kids split the kids meal and loved it. Â We went with the pizza for our first visit (have to try the specialty before branching out) - the onion-battered green beans were an interesting appetizer, and the pepperoni pizza (Old Port) and sausage/green pepper/etc (Moosehead) were great - we loved how you can pick thin/crispy crust or gluten free, or wheat or garlic or beer dough for the crust. Â We both went with the beer-enhanced dough and the crust was delicious, the pizzas were great.
We'll be back, the kids had a good time, everything was clean, the patio looked fun, and according to my kids (pre-schoolers) the pizza and fruit were delicious. Â They have a large sandwich and vegetarian menu too so we'll be bringing some of our friends to check it out next time
I also liked how they had their own root beer on tap (had a pint of it and it was delicious). Â Looking forward to our next visit - we'll try to save room for dessert this time and order some sandwiches too.
went for early dinner on a Sunday night. We loved it. The service was excellent. Staff was attentive and the pizza was great. I had a calzone that was delicious and we also ordered a half and half pizza. Â
The Shipyard tap was ice cold. Ordred a flight (sp) of Shipyards which seemed to be well over 4 oz each, for 4 dollars! Come on, whats to complain about?
We will be back soon.
This is a super venue to entertain some friends and yourself. The decor and atmosphere are most inviting. Â About 20 of my friends and I were taken care of by our server, Gabe, who seemed to never miss a beat. Â We got together in the bar area and pulled several tables near one another. Â He and his manager (Brett, I think? Â I should check on that to be sure) were quite accomodating and made us feel very welcome. Â We indulged in several of their exquisite pizzas, some wine, some beer, and near the end, Gabe recommended dessert pizza of smores. Â Oh, my! Â Decadent would be the word.
Can't say enough good things about the place -- looks, space, food, service. Â Note, as well: Â I'm rather picky (I've discovered) about my pizza. Â This is on the gourmet side and is just what my taste buds desire.
Been here several times and the pizza, particularly the thin crust is great. Beer selection is very good and service has always been excellent.
Some of the negatives are:
Parking can be pain.
Non-thin crust pizzas can be a little doughy making them seem undercooked.
Overall it's definitely the best choice for pizza in the Nashua area.
28 dollars for a single large pizza that tasted like liquid shit and some bullshit from a condescending prick at the front desk. Now, I'm an angry person to begin with, but when I got this crap home and bit into it I was so ripshit I nearly Morten Anderson'd the goddamn cat through the fucking living room window. Save your money and time.
Review Source:My third time here.
The first time was exceptional. The server was great and the pizza was terrific.
The second time, I wanted to try something different so I got their lasagna. It looked great when it was brought to me but as soon as I bit into it, it was cold as ice in the middle. This told me that it was not freshly made. It clearly was made way before I ordered it and stuck in the oven when I did. I decided that if I ever came back, I would stick with the pizza as that was their specialty. I will say that the server was great and was very attentive.
I went once again for the third time today and ordered "The Noreaster," a pizza with buffalo chicken as a topping. Very delicious. The server was okay.. he wasn't very attentive but it was a busy night. I needed the last few slices boxed for me so he brought me a small box to place them in and when I opened it, the box was greasy and was clearly used to hold some other food. I brought it to his attention and he got me a new one. Also, the silverware was dirty.
Overall, the place is okay.. I think it has the potential to be much better, however. If I were to go again, it would be just to get pizza.
Pizza is ok. Â It was undercooked. Â The calzones are big but lacking in ingredients, only two meatballs, the rest is sauce, which also makes the dough soggy. Â Overpriced for what you get. Â
They don't seem to have their act together. Â We would have had to wait for a patio seat even though there open tables. Â They ran out of lobster.
Disappointing experience. Â It looks like an ok place to have a beer. Â They serve shipyard.
We sat out on the patio. It was the first day it was opened and there was a little more work to do on the deck. It was a gorgeous day. The brew selection was nice and easy. Fairly priced with the brews as well. We ordered the amoskook or whatever it is pizza. I did NOT like it at all. It was a little pricey, but filled with the toppings, so I guess it was an OK value. I just didn't personally like it.
I may or may not be back. Next time I will stick with what I know- cheese or a single topping. It was more like eating a slew of toppings than actual pizza.
The staff was nice and pleasant. I gave her a good tip.
Do you like Pizza Hut?!? Or, perhaps, Costco's pizza?
If so, you'll probably love Portland Pie's pizza!
The pizza is thick, soggy, and doughy. Â They feature a variety of options for the dough, but in the end, it doesn't matter. Â A little bit of flavor is nice, however, a pizza that doesn't have the consistency of half-baked bread would also be nice.
They offer a lot of toppings to go on top. Â But, again... does that matter either? Â You could put the world's finest salami on top of a Pizza Hut pizza and it would still be no good.
If you like the Pizza Hut style pizza, you honestly will like this stuff. Â You might like having some flavor options for your dough. Â You might also like festive toppings to go on top of it. Â But not me.
I will note here that I enjoy NY style, and neopolitan style pizza. Â This is closer to Greek style - but I find the common local Greek style places also make a better pizza. Â Go figure.
The last nail in the coffin? Â Price. Â I'm happy to pay more for something I enjoy a lot. Â But when I don't like something, well, that's a bad combination.
Why not 1 star then? Â Well, it is better than the pizza at Pizza Hut or Costco, so if you like the style of pizza they serve, you will likely find this an improvement. Â And while the location is... difficult, the interior is nicely done and the service is fine.
But, seriously. Â If you want a better pizza, there are multiple options that are within walking distance, and all of them are cheaper, too.
I will speak first to the building itself: Â I think an excellent job was done renovating the former site of Cattleman's and a laundromat. Â A lot of the cool brick building features were preserved and the interior design is very inviting. It definitely has that cool mill-building feel to it and still feels very contemporary.
I visited with friends on a Sunday afternoon for lunch. Â We had a cheese bread appetizer, and then two pizzas... one was the beer crust, the other was a multi-grain. Â I liked that they offer some unique pizza combinations, and offer some interesting toppings you don't normally see (like pulled pork, prosciutto, scallops, even lobster!). Â While I liked the flavor of the dough, our pizzas came with crusts that were very under-cooked, almost soggy, requiring knife-and-fork eating action. Â I prefer a crust that's crispy on the bottom, but nice and chewy above (i.e. NY-style), but I guess you won't find that here. Â The other basics (sauce and cheese) were unremarkable.
Parking: Â I see a lot of other reviewers complaining about parking, but I don't think it's any different than other nearby Main St. places like Pedds, Villa Banca, Saffron, SFK, etc. Â Portland Pie's neighbors are very territorial about parking lot spaces (especially Dunkin Donuts), as evidenced by the *multiple* warnings as you enter the restaurant, so I don't expect improvement will come easy. Â But I think it's pretty easy to park across the street and walk a block over, that's what downtowns are supposed to be like anyway.
Pizzas are expensive at $19 for most specialty pies, and $14.49 for a basic cheese (their large, 16"). Â But you're paying for the trendiness and maybe more labor that goes into making the various flavored crusts. Â There is a good selection of beer, wine, and mixed drinks offered at the restaurant, and they do have a number of drink specials.
Service was fine, and our waitress was pleasant, though we waited a while to get our check once we finished. Â I will likely go back, hopefully the pizzas will be cooked better next time.
Nashua, a pizza wasteland if ever there was one!
Since most of the pizza served up by the local places is inedible, I was happy to see a new arrival in town. Even better, it is located in a nicely renovated space, replacing an eyesore that should have been demolished years ago. (Shame they couldn't have kept the cool mural on the wall facing Duncs, though!)
So Caren and I headed over there for a late lunch last Sunday to check things out. As already mentioned, the parking situation is poor, but on a Sunday afternoon there is plenty of street parking available.
I was always way too wimpy to go into the old Cattleman's but walking into the building now is a very pleasant surprise. The renovation is really well done, lots of bare brick walls and wood to be seen.
We sat in the bar and were able to watch some RedSox and Hockey stuff on the various TVs. During the day, the building is really light and bright with the large windows all around, a contrast to the more traditional Peddler's just round the corner.
The beer seems to be mainly from Shipyard, not a bad thing since this is one of my favorite regional breweries.
Ah, I hear you say, what about the pizza? Well we shared a large pizza that at first glance on the menu, I thought was called Camp Redneck - it was actually Cape Neddick, at my age the eyes don't always work that well!
Anyway, regardless of what it was called, the pizza was very nice - made me forget I was in Nashua for a short while.
Service was OK (little slow maybe, but I'm an impatient bugger at the best of times) and all in all, this was a nice meal in a very cool new location.
We've had the chance to try a few other pizzas from Portland Pie since; they delivered a few samples to our office to check out. So far so good - maybe there is hope for Nashua yet!
Came here on a Wednesday for restaurant week. Great deal...$20 for 2 people...this included 2 salads, 1 large pizza, and 1 dessert. Â Our salads were ok, would not order again when I come back. For the pizza we tried their version of a cheeseburger pizza on a garlic crust. Â Very good but my only recommendation would be to add thousand island dipping sauce on the side. Â The couple we were will got the bbq chicken pizza on a beer crust...also very good! Â For dessert, we got the blueberry pie with vanilla ice cream. It was ok...would try a different dessert next time. Â For drinks, i got the shipyard sample...4-4oz servings of several shipyard beers for only 4 bucks. Â All in all, this was a good first experience. Â Parking was tough as others stating..we parked at margs and walked over...too bad they couldn't work out a deal with dunks and use part of their lot.
Review Source:A somewhat new pizza place in Nashua.
It has a good beer selection although its been a bit heavy on the Shipyard selections when I've been there.
So far the couple pizzas I've gotten have been pretty good. I especially like that you can order different styles of crust and I don't mean thin or regular. They actually have different flavors like beer, whole wheat, regular and garlic. They also have an interesting selection of toppings available which puts it somewhere between a Flatbread Company and a regular pizza store as far as options. The prices are pretty reasonable and the service for both take out and eat in where good.
The only real downside is they have zero parking. You need to find street parking which is tough to come by since Penuches across the street basically has no parking as well. Hopefully they will work out a deal with the Dunks so they can use that parking lot at night.
Had totally forgot that Portland Pie Company was in town until we read the Hippo 'best of' section that came out a day before. Â My wife and I dine out frequently but only make it downtown occasionally. Â So, on a somewhat nice day we thought we would explore downtown with our 3 month old daughter and saw the sign for PPC. Â My wife having gone to college in Portland and both of us loving pizza thought it would be a great Saturday afternoon trial run. Â
First off, what they did with the old building is beautiful. Â As another reviewer said, to think a place like Cattlemans was there prior is quite amusing - its one heck of a transformation. Â Inside the decor is very Maine and Portland oriented with replicas of signs and pictures from Maine. Â Since the restaurant is very 'open' it does get noisy and sounds do travel. Â The bar area and bar lounge is separated from the dining area so that cuts down on some of that noise. Â We arrived around 1230pm and it was quite busy but by the time we left it was pretty packed so it was a tad loud inside - not a deal breaker and it didn't wake up our sleeping 3 month old so that's fine by us.
The beer selection is great. Â Nothing compared to the micro brews at Martha's Exchange but a great selection of a lot of Maine craft beers like Geary's, Shipyard, etc. Â Their draught selection included these Maine beers and I believe they also had the standard Bud and Coors selection but i didn't pay attention to that 'crap'.
Now, the pizza. Â My wife and I do go out a good amount and of course that includes the local pizza places. Â We really only go to restaurants that have lounges / bar areas so pizza places placed like Crush, Bertucci's, UNOs, etc are all some of the places we frequent. Â The pizza selection at PPC was pretty impressive and a bit overwhelming at first due to the combination of pizzas they had. Â Their speciality pizzas from the menu all looked amazing and 'different' compared to most other places (which is a good thing in our mind). Â They have a speciality pizza for everyone, vegetarian, meat, chicken, seafood, etc. and also allow you to create your own if the right mix isn't there for you on the menu. Â We started off with the bruschetta appetizer from the specials menu which was a great start. Â Our waitress was really personable and attentive. Â We were torn between the bruschetta and another item off the main menu for our appetizer and the waitress went into both of them items and recommended the bruschetta - great choice. Â For our meal we each got (what else) but pizza. Â I ordered the Chamberline (I think) which had pulled pork along with the same sauce that you get on that amazing Chinese meal - General Gso's chicken (I'm always up for something different). Â I ordered this pizza with one of their 5 dough options (I chose the beer one) in 12" form. Â If you love General Gso's chicken and pizza I cannot rate this pizza high enough. Â Its the only time I've had such a combo and been so impressed with it. Â Most certainly one of the best speciality pizzas I've had in quite some time. Â Anytime one can combine these flavors in this fashion they are always going to get my order. Â The crust was not too thin and not too thick and it was not over cooked- it was pretty perfect in my mind. Â I do like a crust that is crunchy on the outside and a tad chewy (not raw) in the inside and this was perfect. Â My wife ended up with their BBQ chicken pizza and that was equally as good. Â Both pizzas came out at the same time and were cooked perfectly.
The only downside is parking. I'm sure at a more busy time... between the not-so-ideal parking situation may deter people from showing up but just park in one of the garages like on High street behind Marthas and do the 5 minute walk - it will work up more of your pizza appetite. Â The staff is obviously aware of the parking situation and we heard each of the waitstaff check with the customers once they were seated to ensure they weren't parking in illegal spots. Â
All in all this place is great. Â It brings a great pizza restaurant with a great atmosphere to the downtown area and more importantly to the Canal Street area. Â We liked it so much I joined their Mug Club and my wife joined their membership rewards program. Â Parking issues or not we now have a new favorite pizza place in the area. Â We hope Portland Pie is able to serve that nitch for a downtown pizza restaurant in Nashua and they stick around for a long time.
I'm loving the pizza here and really glad to have had Portland Pie Co. open an establishment within walking distance of me. I had been to the Manchester location a couple times, but never had the desire to drive specifically to Manchester for pizza and a beer since I would be driving. Now that I can walk, I can have pizza and beer(s), I'm enjoying myself. I've come here for both lunch and dinner during the week and didn't have any issues getting a table and the service was both quick and attentive.
The buffalo wings weren't the greatest...they weren't particularly hot and not as crispy as I typically like. The pizza is great and having a selection of dough to make it with is such a great feature...
Portland Pie...We meet for the first time and the last time...
I've been waiting for this place to open for a while and wanted to try them in a bad way and let me say BIG disappointment. I'm a fan of Wood oven Pizza and know the best Pizza places in Brooklyn , NY. So, for a Pizza to make me drool you better be good. The place was fixed up nice but....
First this is not my style of eating, NO PARKING...The place was so noisy it was kind of annoying VERY VERY LOUD. Third you got beefcake servers were young and walking around like they got a peanut stuck up their buts.
Now for the worst part the Pizza. you can't and shouldn't even call it pizza that's why they have Pie in their name and NOT "Pizza". I couldn't even order a cheese (Margherita) pizza. They had all these crazy names for their pizzas and one even had ketchup and mustard on it. I had to custom order a cheese pizza with Pepperoni and Sausage. The dough tasted like it was definetly frozen. The Sauce tastes like it was flavored out of a can. the service ended up to be ok.
I can't believe what the hype is all about. People in NH flock to chains and need to raise the standard of their eateries wether it's pizza, burgers or burritos.
I have never eaten at the place, but started using their dough to make pizza at home about a year ago, and I can say theirs is above and beyond any dough available at a supermarket, and now I can make gourmet pizza on par with the best pizza in Boston (which i realize isn't saying much!)
Regardless the Beer pizza dough is worth mentioning as something VERY special!
We've been eagerly awaiting the Nashua location of Portland Pie Company for quite a while. We've eaten at the PPC in Manchester and really enjoyed it, but all things being equal, we'd much rather stay in Nashua on a weeknight than drive up to Manch. We decided to go to PPC for a Valentine's dinner. Even though it was a Tuesday night, the place was busy because it is a new restaurant in town; it was difficult to find parking. We parked in the metered spots near the Riverwalk and walked over.
We sat at the bar, where I ordered a martini and BF ordered a Shipyard beer flight for $4. We then ordered 10-inch pizzas: the Shipyard Special (broccoli, garlic, spinach, red sauce) on a basil crust for me and Red Claws (lobster, scallions, and cheese) on a beer crust for him. The pizzas were, as expected, delicious, and the service was really good, despite the crowd. I drank water after I finished my martini, and the bartenders were always quick to refill my drink.
PPC has a good selection of beers on tap, with the aforementioned Shipyard brews and then the more standard stuff. There are a lot of nightly specials on beers, wine, and mixed drinks. We also got the Frequent Pie-er card, and it's nice to know that food AND drinks count toward the awarded value. Beer drinkers can also join the Mug Club for $50 and have their own mugs hanging from the ceiling above the bar.
