Unfortunately there is a Yelp-fail in the department of "good for kids" at the Rail Station. Â
Inside was noisy because of a Bingo game so we decided to hit the patio which was a bad decision. Â We happened to sit next to a couple thugs who were swearing and talking about how they got in a fight with some random at a park. Â Being very loud and rude while smoking with my kids only a few feet from them. Â
This is more of a dive bar and I would not recommend bringing your kids along unless you want them to learn about the streets.
Our tab was $75 for 3 adults and 2 kids, and with a $30 gift card, was still over priced for what it was worth. Â Food was the worst I've had in a long time as you can see from my ratings on the photos I uploaded. Â The only exception is the Patty Melt which was fantastic. Â The rest of the food was either cooked from frozen or dry and overcooked (or both). Â
The only way I can recommend Rail Station would be Lightrail bar hopping.
I bought my first house in this neighborhood about 6 weeks ago, and I think it's safe to say that this is now my favorite neighborhood bar and restaurant. Â It's laid back and casual, with 40 beers on tap (including many local craft beers), a large food menu, plenty of big screen TVs for watching whatever sporting event is on that day, plus a good size patio so you can feel outdoorsy while you get drunk! Â
Just ate there for the second time over this past weekend, and everything was on point, particularly considering the price! Â So far I've tried the wings, the beer battered walleye, black bean burger, and french fries, and everything has surpassed my expectations. Â The wings are HUGE and super crispy (I loathe non-crispy wings); definitely some of the better wings I've had in my life. Â My boyfriend ordered the walleye pike special, which came with fries as well as a side salad. Â The side salad was surprisingly large, the veggies were fresh, and the blue cheese dressing was super thick and rich, with generous chunks of blue cheese. Â The walleye itself was piping hot, with a nice beer battered crust on it, and a wonderful tartar sauce. Â A huge amount of food for $10 that was definitely worth much more.
My spicy black bean burger was probably one of the best veggie burgers I've had, and I was vegetarian for 18 years, so that's saying something! Â I could tell immediately that it wasn't some Morningstar Farms crap they just pulled out of the freezer--it was big, had a nice grilled char on it, and was topped with some delicious melty pepper jack cheese and chipotle mayo. Â Even the bun it was served on was perfection! Â As for the fries, I could take or leave french fries at most places--usually they're either too thin, too thick, or just not crispy enough. Â These beer battered fries were sooo good and worth every delicious calorie. Â Did I mention this burger & fries combo was only $8.50?! Â I washed it all down with a Fox Barrel Blackberry Cider, then waddled home and commenced into a food coma.
Our server informed us that they make all of their sauces and dressings from scratch, with the exception of the light Italian dressing. Â They also cut their sirloin steaks on site, so they're always super lean, if you're a steak eater (we're not). Â
I definitely foresee us spending a lot of time in this great local bar!
I wanted to leave a 3.5...its a tad better than ok, but the bar bioch working is the most unhappy person I ever met. Â The patty melt was great, the fries were good, the bbq sauce was ok, drinks were short and stiff just like myself. Â Prices were semi reasonable too. Â Never got a receipt though...that was a tad odd.
Review Source:Went for the first time last weekend even though we've lived here for 3 plus years. We were only there for couple of beers and didn't order any food. Â
I was impressed with the bartender, I'd give her props but cannot remember her name...thin, blondish, long hair.
She was working hard, attentive and friendly.
I liked the vibe, my kind of place. Â
I'll def go back.
After 3+ years of living in Longfellow I have finally gotten around to trying the Rail Station. Â I don't know what took me so long, it's a great local bar and restaurant. Â
I've only had apps, but the beer battered french fries were addicting and the deep fried mushrooms are huge! Â There is a MASSIVE selection of local and imported beers (we're talking two wall-sized chalkboards to list them all). Â I'll be back!
I got a gift card when I moved into my condo for this place and never had made it over. Â I wasn't missing a great deal. Â There's nothing wrong with the food, it's just not all that exciting. Â Â Pretty typical bar food, nothing that I had blew me away but it wasn't bad, just fair.
The waitress was pleasant in that neighborhood bar type of friendliness and was efficient in showing me around the menu and the food was delivered promptly and hot.
I'll go back for sure but I won't wake up and crave it.
Great casual atmosphere. This is the kind of place that you want for your neighborhood bar. Â There seems to be a lot of regulars but newbies (like myself) are welcomed without the stare down that you normally receive walking into the unknown. Â
The food was awesome! Â Don't drive past this place without trying the barbecue sauce. I think it would make my shoe taste good! Â The power of the sauce!
Our server was attentive and fun! Â She did a spot on imitation of Lorraine from Mad TV! Â Our drinks were always full and she made the rounds on a regular basis.
Without a doubt, we will be back!
Boy did I jump to conclusions about this being just another bar and grill to pass up. I had a brunch meet up. Totally agree with Dan about breakfast. But I was here Friday to check out the location. The fries are everything they say they are, but the fried mushrooms are equally fantastic, and mammoth, and juicy. Really a meal unto itself. The fried fish has a very thick batter. It was hot so I got a side salad. Delicious bleu cheese dressing and a generous portion. I will be a stranger no more.
Review Source:We took my parents to this place for dinner. Â Good beer selection (40 on draft) and excellent burgers.
The sides are nothing special, frozen and prepared elsewhere. Â But the price is fair for the quality. Â I wouldn't call it kid-friendly, but is not anti-kid. Â There are way too many televisions and the place is loud for my tastes, but for a bar it works.
Discovered that they have a to go menu which we will likely be taking advantage of as they are only a few blocks away.
I wouldn't describe it as a must go to place, but if you are in the neighborhood there aren't a lot of American food options that don't cost an arm and a leg.
Never really been here until recently - even though it's pretty close.
TONS of beers on tap which is awesome. Â Had some dinner there as well - the food was pretty standard bar fare, but it was pretty tasty - definitely can't complain. Â The fries were very nice, very very nice.
They had karaoke there on a thursday night - and it was alright - I'm not a big fan of that because it seems like the bad singers are more common than the good and have no shame - but there was definitely a few fun ones and good ones in the mix.
Definitely a mix of a crowd at the place - but it was fun, good prices and good food and drinks - it's close and they have a huge patio - so will definitely go back!
in walking distance of my house, I have an awesome neighborhood bar.
They have killer cheese curds, killer fries and you better get the bbq with the fries. Â and guess what else I had with their killer fries...?? Bernaise sauce, that was awesome. Â
Good service, nice drinks--totally awesome beer selection. Â
And pull tabs...come on it doesn't get any funner.
This place gets sketchy at night, we were there last night with a big group of rowdy mountain bikers and this place was crazy busy, The server taking care of us did a really good job with handling our group as the night went on and we turned into a large group of idiots. Quick to bring drinks and refils, and really tolerant of everyone changing tables, wandering around and being generally annoying. They now have 40 beers on tap, and to me still missed out on the good ones. There is some great people watching in this place, I don't know where the crowd migrates from but it is all kinds of awesome.
Review Source:I would give a 3 or 4 star rating if this place didn't turn kind of sketchy at night. Good patio, actually they have two, pretty decent bar food, nothing special on the menu but I'd say it's got a little more depth than your average neighborhood bar. Slightly above average beer selection and pretty standard selection of everything else at reasonable prices. Every time I've been here past midnight I've seen many a situation about to turn terribly wrong which leaves me feeling on edge and unable to relax. Friends have seen some fights here and I've seen many close calls with over-served crazy locals. Come during the day but reconsider staying past 10 or 11PM.
Review Source:Choo Choo!!! I wish there were more places like The Rail Station in South Minneapolis. Oh there are other bar & grills but the ample draft beer (and btw, yesterday they just increased their taps by at least double), decent food, affordable prices, fun atmosphere, and the relatively great happy hour that doesn't end until 7pm make this place worth the trip. They usually have attractive daily specials too, not to mention daily meat raffles and Bingo on Wednesdays.
Review Source:Oh my god the fries.
The fries.
The fries.
That is all you need to know.
Go here for good fries.
If you're some kind of french fry aficionado,
this place must go on your list of places to check out.
Thick-sliced plank fries that are bigger than the pickle spear
that comes with your burger,
they're crispy on the outside and soft in the middle.
Perfection!
Plus it comes with some seasoned sour cream to dip them in.
I've had their bacon pepper jack burger a couple times
and I could hardly make a dent in it because I filled up on fries so fast.
Not a problem for me,
I love having left overs so I can recapture the moment later.
This place is kind of like a townie bar,
neon beer signs all over, NASCAR shit all over,
TVs on every wall broadcasting 'the game'.
The people are nice here, staff and patrons alike.
I like coming here, it's low key.
You could roll in wearing sweats and be fully embraced.
Had brunch this morning and walked away a happy woman. Â Great prices, the food was perfect, and being clearly forthright here, the people watching was even better. Â The staff was super friendly. Â And honestly it was such a pleasant brunch that I didn't even notice 2.5 hours had passed by - of course the most important reason this happened was due to my dear friend who chose this location :) Â Â I'll def. be returning for another brunch.
Review Source:The Rail Station is awesome! Â We've never had a bad time there. Â It is a great place to go and eat and/or have some drinks. Â Seems like whenever you go there, there is something going on from karaoke, games, etc. Â They have great drink specials and the food is great for the price. Â We go there all the time for the food/drink and especially the atmosphere. Â The place is obviously well run as they make a point to make sure the customer is happy.
Review Source:We went to this place, I admit, only because we had an entertainment book coupon and I had read good things here on yelp. I was shocked when we pulled in and saw how big this place was because for some reason, I thought it would be really small.
They have a patio out front but there isn't much to look at on Minnehaha Avenue. There is nothing too terribly exciting about this bluest of the blue collar neighborhood. I am NOT dissing the hood either because the Longfellow neighborhood will always have a special place in my heart since I bought my first house right near here many years ago..Just saying..Its Blue Collar. I have to disagree with some fellow yelpers however in that I did not feel unsafe at all here but that could possibly be because it was a Monday night..Not too much goes down on a Monday night.
There was a great variety of people including some elderly, some younger college kids, and alot of neighborhood folks. Great mix of people.
We just ordered some burgers but looking around, all the food looked really good from their salads to their dinners. Our burgers were better than average, fries were piping hot, prices were extremely reasonable, and service was top notch. Â Put all that on top of an extremely fresh-smelling, clean bathroom, and nice large parking lot, and you get my return visit!
I will be back!! (Even without a coupon)...:)
Rail Station is a place near and dear to my heart as it is also near and dear to my house. Â That being said I would travel much farther than the current 10 blocks to enjoy the unassuming atmosphere, the awesome happy hour (which they give you coupons for so it can continue after the scheduled timeframe) and meat raffles.
Wanna hear something nutty - they have AWESOME stir fry!  I know, I know..."Why did you get the stir fry at a dive bar?!"  I didn't.  My wife did.  BUT I tried it.  And it was GREAT!
Rail Station is the kind of place you can drive by without ever noticing. But, you'd be missing out on a great atmosphere, service, and good bar food.
We stopped in and found a table on the patio. Minnehaha Ave isn't the best view, but the patio seating option was good nonetheless. We each ordered burgers. Pretty average bar fare. The wings were awesome. Full wings, not the nubs I'm accustom to at other area bars. $5 for a half-order, which was all I needed. Final tab came to a little over $20 with just soda to drink.
I'll definitely be back to the Rail Station. Looks like a great place to watch a game. They have a ton of activities during the week: Wii bowling league, karaoke, trivia, etc. Good beer selection as well.
Food and drinks are cheap, staff is friendly, it's a nice plan to hang out. You're dining experience wont be haute cuisine but it'll be above average bar food. Rips, steak, chicken, burgers, sandwiches, usual barfare.
They have high life on tap, so that's a plus. High Life and PBR are my beer's when I'm not drinking summit or other fancy beers. And if I'm driving I avoid those as 2-3 can put you over and 2-3 highlifes I'm fine.
The Rail Station Bar has always been a great place to go for any sports game. The Wings are probably the best kept secret in Minneapolis. If you go on Tuesdays, you can get enough to feed a family for only $10. The deep fried mushrooms are great rail station treat as well.
One of the best neighborhood bars in Minneapolis, highly recommend.
This is a friendly and comfortable neighborhood bar. Â The inside is clean and simple. Â We did not use it but it looked like there is a great patio area. Â The staff was friendly. Â There was a great crowd of friendly people watching the NCAA basketball championship on the night we were there. Â I loved the laid back atmosphere
I have heard that karaoke nights are popular and fun at this location as well.
The had $3 domestic drafts and rail drinks on special. Â I got the Grown Up Grilled Cheese (american and provolone cheese) and fries and really enjoyed it ($5.50 plus extra for the fries since I didn't want chips). Â My boyfriend got a burger and enjoyed that as well.
This is definitely going to be a favorite bar in the area for a laid back time.
Stopped in on a Sunday afternoon. Â It's a pretty laid back neighborhood bar. Â Cheep drinks, good atmosphere, didn't try the food because were stopping to pick up some Ted cooks BBQ later. Â The gophers never play good when we stop here either. Â It has an Irish pub kind of feel to it too, but that could just be because it's only a few days to St. Patricks Day and the walls are not going to let you forget it. Â Didn't try the fish-n-chips special. Â They have a patio, but it's your standard MN outdoor smokers lounge. Â Kieth Richards is out there having a smoke. Â I noticed they are quick to sweep up broken glass on the floor when you drop your beer. Â This is not a "pants on the ground, gold in yo mouth, hat turned sideways, lookin like a fool" type bar. Â If you are looking for that, go to Augies.
Review Source:I used to go to this place all the time. Â But, then we discovered something: Â they are rude to you. Â Especially if you stay to closing time. Â I understand the need for a place to get people to stop drinking at 1 or 2 am (it is their duty by law). Â But, this place is super rude about it. Â And, even worse, they will ask you if you want another drink 10 minutes before closing (and, of course, their clock is fast compared to yours). Â So, you think, by your watch, you have a bit of time to drink that drink. Nope! Â You still have a nearly full drink and they are yelling, at THE TOP of their lungs, "Get the HELL out!". Â Seriously. Â They don't ask nicely. Â They go from "Can I get you another drink?" to "Get the hell out!" in 10 minutes. Â
Everything else was on par with a dive neighborhood bar, so that stuff is fine. Â But, it is how they treat you ALL the way to the end that REALLY matters.
And this wasn't just something that made only me mad. Â Several other patrons and all of my friends have noticed the same thing. Â We have vowed to never go there again until they change management..and we have not been back since.
Okay, we live in the area so it was time to give this local place a try. Â My favorite part was the outside patio, which was lovely! Â And the food was VERY decently priced. Â They have steak and prime rib, nice food for a good price. Â
I have been here twice and the first time I got the stir-fry, although bland, came with some delicious mozzarella bread. Â The last time I was there I got the soup and a grilled cheese sandwich. Â
Atmosphere is totally laid back and not pretentious. Â I ordered a drink called, "bootylicious" and only felt a little bit silly.
They serve a decent breakfast and bloody mary here and you get to eat free on the day of your birthday. Â I didn't think that the breakfast was great, but it isn't horrible. Â The food is pretty inexpensive. Â They had a ton of large flat screen TVs. Â Its a nice sports bar for those in the neighborhood, or those who live near the light rail. Â The place is pretty big and seems to have a lot of regulars.
Review Source:I have lived in Minneapolis for 16 years now and never heard of this restaurant. Â It is located about a block and a half off the light rail line. Â My wife and I drove towards the bar and grill and were a little aprehensive about going there because the neighborhood was a little run down. Â We got closer to the place and saw a full parking lot at about noon on Sunday and decided it would be okay to try it out.
We had a two for one coupon and entered. Â There are a ton of TVs around the bar and pull tabs. Â The people inside the joint looked like regulars and the waitresses seemed to know everyone. Â We both wondered what it was like before the smoking ban and we guessed you probably couldn't see the hand in front of your face. Â My wife thought she still smelled the linguering smell of smoke embedded in the walls.
I ordered a buffalo chicken sandwich with a side salad substitute instead of the fries and my wife got the chicken Caeser salad.
The buffalo sandwich wasn't spicy, which I would have preferred, but it was still filling and a solid sandwich. Â The blue cheese with my salad and sandwich was amazing. Â From their website, I think they make it themselves. Â Outstanding. Â Lots of chunks of blue cheese everywhere.
My wife's Caeser Salad was a good size portion with a roll and she said it was just right. Â The croutons were nice and crispy and I dipped them in my fantastic dressing.
We both ordered diet cokes and our waitress seemed like she had lived a hard life, but she was one of the nicest ladies I have had as a waitress ever. Â She refilled our drinks before we were even finished with them.
What a find, a great neighborhood bar. Â We bought the new Entertainment book today and saw that they had another two for one in there so I know we will be back.
It started snowing for the first time in Minneapolis for the year and we left The Rail Station saying to ourself, what a cool place.
On their website you can print off coupons that give you half off an entree if you buy one at full price. Â Plus they had fun happy hour specials throughout the week. Â They also have catering. Â It is also a Vikings bar, I can only imagine what it is like during a Vikings game. Â $2.75 beers it stated during the games.
Funny story - Right when we walked in, a lady came to the table behind us and said to their friends, "So you guys brought this horsesh*t weather with you." Â I knew this was going to be a cool place.
