Happy hour all day on Sunday and Mondays!! What a great way to begin the week :)
$5.00 mai tais are fab!! Oh so tasty and the cinnamony sugary stuff they put on the rim is a nice touch. I so wanted to try the Dark & Stormy but my friends were ready to leave and they wouldn't make one to go... bummer LOL!
Must try some of their special drinks. 10 different rums in one drink?!!? I'm so there, next time for sure.
Although we didn't induldge in the alcohol this is a fun and funky place. They had a four piece local band playing and they were pretty good. When I first saw them on the very little stage preparing to play, I had my doubts. But we enjoyed them. One of the guys was eating a rice bowl when they started to play the first song and all of a sudden we see him plucking at his guitar during the same song.
This looks to be a local hangout for college kids too with a beer pong table waiting for players to arrive which they did by the time we were leaving.
It has the Hawaiian vibe with its decor and laid back funky furniture. Nothing fancy but comfortable environment.
Reef Bar and Pono Hawaiian Grill share the same, large restaurant space in downtown Santa Cruz. Â The cocktails and happy hour drink specials at Reef Bar are just as great as the Hawaiian food that Pono serves up!
The Reef bar staff is friendly, and the space is large with lots of tables, or you can sit at the bar. Â There are a couple TVs behind the bar, and a huge projection TV screen on the wall, so Reef Bar makes for a great place to watch a big game. Â The fact that killer Hawaiian dishes & appetizers are just steps away at the Pono counter make it all the bettah. Â
There's also a large outdoor patio to enjoy your food & bevies on those nice Santa Cruz afternoons. Â Live music many evenings, including some of the most prestigious Hawaiian musicians in the country. Â Lastly, Pono/Reef Bar is good for families right up till the live music gets started. Â Plenty Aloha!
My nephew brought us to Pono's for some yummy Hawaiian bbq and poke.  I didn't know the bar was separate and that the space was being shared.  It's a nice casual and friendly place.  My wife and sister ordered a pitcher of  sangria and said it was too watered down and didn't taste at all like sangria....disappointing.
Review Source:Last week I went to Pono for a poke bowl for the first time. Since the bar is separate, and it was my first day off for Spring Break, (I am a teacher) I ordered a specialty drink with an island name and a jalapeno bite. The bartender Angel was fabulous and so was the drink she made for me. That visit would have gotten 5 Stars. I went back today, Pono was out of poke ;-( Â and there was a different bartender who made a really mediocre drink. It was watery, hardly any jalapeno bite, and lackluster at best. It's funny how last week's experience sent me back there today, but if today would have been my first experience I would have thought it was so-so and wouldn't be in a hurry to return to the bar or Pono (without poke). 5 stars last week, 3 stars today = 4 total. I hope someone who is affiliated with Reef Bar and Pono see this review and understand how people form impressions. I plan to post this review for Pono also.
