Free popcorn, free pool (weekdays), Karaoke Fridays with my man KJ Mike, Comic stand-up nights and colorful banter and clientele make the Regal my favorite bar in La Mesa. Â Always a dependable stop along the row of often antique-centric business on La Mesa blvd. Â I have grown to appreciate having a bar like this nearby. Â Reasonable drink prices and a very easy to talk to staff makes this place a must-hangout if you are in the area.
Review Source:I have a love and hate relationship with this place. The only reason I keep coming back to this place is due to the fact my family always come here, but the booze prices are sky high!!
I wish they had better prices on alcohol. That's my main gripe. The bartenders and security are good people and take care of us. I just make sure I pre-drink before I go, or else i'll end up bankrupt! (Yes you can call me a cheap-o)!
I visited the Regal last night because there was a band playing at Pete's place, when we walked in there were folks playing pool, grabbing drinks ect. We easily walked to the bar grabbed drinks and sat down. A few songs into the jukebox and I realized the only thing that was playing was rap or r&b. I thought - Gosh how strange! This is a dive bar in east county. Then I realized the bouncer kept walking up to the box after others with some type of remote or card and would pick songs. I thought no way! Is the bouncer seriously by passing the songs of the bar patrons??? No way!! So I walked up and put 5 bucks into the jukebox. I picked some ACDC, Led Zeplin, The Black Keys ect, I even paid extra credits to make sure they all played next!!! A few more rap songs and The Black Keys finallllly came on! Someone actually walked up to me to thank me for playing something besides rap! I was thinking OK maybe I was crazy. But then I see the bouncer walk up to the jukebox again and what plays next??? Another rap song!!!!!!!!!!! My god! This bar is absolutely losing money because of this. I don't mind the occasional rap song, but not every freaking song. Especially by someone not even drinking in the bar?
To top it off there was a cockroach running around the bar.
I live within walking distance to this bar, I will definitely never visit again on a Saturday night.
Inexpensive drinks, cool and casual, kareoke Fridays, and great staff, what else could you want in your local bar? I hear people also go here to watch games and such during the day, but I've only been to Regal at night....many many times. When the super duper nice owner John comes up to you and hugs you when you arrive, you know you probably go there too much, but he's such a nice guy, I know he greets many customers with a warm smile and hello! And even when you sing horribly (ahem, I wouldn't know anything about that), they still don't kick you out. It's the kind of place where after you've gone somewhere for dinner and just want to hang out and chill somewhere you think "hey lets go to The Regal!". If nothing else girls, go to check out the hottie behind the bar (aka: Antonio ;-) )
Review Source:They water down their drinks! When I complained, the supposed owner said he personally poured the drink as I was wrong. Gee I thought I was the customer! Ok so I am not their normal client! I am 55 and I have been drinking  Tanqueray and tonics longer than they have been alive! Instead of good customer service they physically threw us out! Thats ok! Our kids and friends are now boycotting the place! Which to say since we were there on a Fri night and there were only handful of peeps there, not so good news! So watch out for the fat guy(owner)!
Review Source:The best bar in La Mesa, friendly bartenders and staff. This place always has a nice crowd the only down side is they just recently started charging to play pool past 6 PM I believe although is not a lot it was nice when it was free.. Free pool table needs to come back.. Still my go to spot.
Review Source:Ok, so I may be a little bias with this review because I do work here, but this is honestly the best bar I have ever worked at. Before becoming an employee I was a frequent patron and I always enjoyed my time here.
There is usually something going on every night of the week. If not a great deal with our happy hour we also host Beer Pong tournaments Monday nights (with cash prizes), Live Trivia on Wednesdays, and Karaoke every Friday. The staff is always friendly and knowledgeable, myself included ;-) Jonathan is a great manager. He's friendly and helpful to his employees as well as our patrons.
You will not regret trying out The Regal Bar and I know you will become a regular in no time.
Almost every month or perhaps every other Friday it seems as if I make it here with my co-workers. I mean, we do work at an office across the street and what better things are there to do after work on a Friday night!? (Hahaha jk...I do have a life peeps!)
This place has a space for everyone. Whether you're there for a beer (I'm always there for a nice cold Heineken), a game of pool, or a smoke at the outside patio (thank goodness for the closed doors! I'm not a smoker), or there to hang out then you're at the right place - after all, good times is what this bar is all about!
Drinks are reasonable, free popcorn, free pool, good service...good times.
Plus, I hear they have awesome social hours such as karaoke, trivia nights, and live music. I'm telling you...good times ;)
I always like hitting up downtown La Mesa... it makes me feel like I'm in Back to the Future. This ain't a bad little joint. There's a fire pit in the back which is nice and the bartender's are always cool. Occasionally you'll find one of the local weirdos coming through, but it's a bar, what do you expect? If you're in the neighborhood, check it out.
Review Source:For a neighborhood bar in La Mesa, this place absolutely is the best.
Prices are reasonable, the staff is always friendly, there isnt any drama, and everyone is always a sloppy, happy, falling over drunk. Â What else can you ask for?
Come as you are, we'll all be your friend :)
PS. The pizza they have at the bar is amazing & cheap!
A fun place to come and hang out. A simple dive that makes you feel welcome, and has a decent selection of alcohols. Â Came here a few times for the music as they get some pretty good artists here. Â They offer pizza and other snacks for a reasonable price for bar food too, which is a bonus.
Review Source:Best bar in La Mesa!
Looking at the reviews below it is obvious that they are based off of the attire that the customers are wearing, and not the service that the bar provides! Â I started going to the Regal bar about a year ago, and my first time in there was a just a mere slice of the amazing experiences that I have had since. Â There are specials EVERY night, and the bartenders actually care about you. Â Rather then some other bars where they just want to pour your drink and move on with their shift. Â Friday and Saturday nights have got to be the best nights! Â Karaoke on fridays, and a live band on Saturdays bring that extra something special to La Mesa. Â Highly recommend coming here for some GOOD TIMES :]
Went back to this bar a year after giving it a bad review, even though I thought I'd never return, I figured "Hey, what the heck, they might have changed their ways!" Nope. Bad service again, bar "waitress" was cold as ice and angry. There were a couple of Mexicans trying to act like ex-cons all dressed up in their weak attire, and the rest of the crowd was trying to pretend they were in PB,and so cool they must be found here so people could admire them acting cool. You know, very un La Mesa like people who are usually happy and down to earth like the people two doors down at Pete's Place. I wanted so much to give this place a good review after feeling like I might have experienced an isolated incident last time, but I had it right the first time. Setting up a pack of self serving ridiculous regulars ain't winning this place any stars, but at least they're all starting to congregate together so they'll stay out of the cool places. This place ain't cool, it's chilly, and chilly ain't never been cool. Soon all their customers will migrate to a new place where they'll try their cool act in yet another attempt to impress somebody by acting like they still don't live with their parents. Reminds me of bars I used to bounce on under 18 show nights. Like four virgins sitting in a convertible Porsche out front with the top down playing Sail Away by the Celtic women and trying to get laid but are petrified to move from the weak joint they just split. If you want a good laugh, stop by. This place is a real satire. Undeserving to be in the heart of one of the greatest spots in San DIego .PB belongs in PB, this crowd belongs in their bedrooms getting their degrees instead of playing video games, and the wanna be biker or two that hangs out here deserve to be called bikers like Elvis deserved to be called a blackbelt. Overpriced, rude, bad vibe. What can I say. The definition of Regal has changed. The new definition can be summed up in one word, and that one word is SAD!
Review Source:I was forced to attend an event at this place... Â never heard about it before... Â walked in thinking that I was going to just have to "get through" the event and then leave quietly.
Turns out it was the best discovery I have ever made. Â One of the owners, Jonathan, is just an all around good guy who really enjoys having his place and his regulars. Â It always feels like you are coming into "your place". Â No fake sophistication, no hype.... just your neighborhood pub with your neighbors who you want to see.
The karaoke on Friday is a great time. Â Walked in once or twice when the place was packed to the gills because they were featuring a local comic or performing artist. Â They play the games for the fans to enjoy and I am amazed at how many people come with friends dressed with their jerseys and a real desire to have a good time... Haven't seen anyone with a chip on their shoulder in the place and I am beginning to think it is because everyone is comfortable and wants to have a good time... Â Really nice change from some of the Sports Bars i've been to.
The Bartenders are friendly and easy-going... Â the food... well, they do have pizza and corn dogs.... Â but I would like to state that this is not a place you are coming to for a sit down meal... this is a place for a sit down draft and the company of some real characters... Â 'nuff said.
The fire pit outside is WONDERFUL.  Look... if you want to sit in front of a fire and just chill, there is a lot of planning and work involved...  building a fire in your house requires constant vigilence and fire extinguishers...  setting  up a bonfire requires camping permits, fire safety procedures...  it's a lot of work... why not just come to the Regal and buy a beer, sit down and get all of the joy with none of the work?  Consider this your "rent a hearth"... and all it costs is time and the price of an ice cold beer... and you wanted the beer anyways....  : )
In short... Â The Regal... Â it's open... you should go.
I went here Thursday the 10th with a friend to watch a Chargers game. The bar was very crowded and noisy, and there was only one bartender, but he was amazing! Even with a non-stop rush of sports fans shouting for his attention, he stayed friendly and never looked flustered or annoyed. He was always on the ball, getting orders in a timely fashion, and attentive to his surroundings. This great service alone was enough to make me want to go back.
Other than that, the ambiance is very nice. It's new and modern in appearance compared to most other bars in the area. In other words, The Regal is a real sports bar, the other places are just dives. There's also a rad out door area with a fire pit. It's a very classy, open and inviting atmosphere.
If it wasn't for Johnny B's up the street on La Mesa Blvd I never would have discovered this little pocket of fun just a five minute drive from my place. Last year a friend of mine asked me out for a beer at JB's and I've never actually been thru downtown La Mesa save for Octoberfest which I barely remember every year anyway.
After eating we wandered down the street walking past all the little restaurants and shops that make downtown La Mesa very cozy and warm when we spotted the word Sports Bar haha. Walking in there was this really nice blond girl (who doesn't work there now) who served us up some cold ones and I fell in love with the joint.
This was when Regal bar was only 4 feet wide with one line of stools going down the bar, a bathroom and that's it. A friend of mine who I found out later worked there too filled me in on this big renovation they were going to have. With the new remodel they have done it's even better than I had thought. They have pool, darts, tvs lining the walls with every type of sport to watch from baseball, football, basketball and even MMA. Out back there is a fire hearth and open patio where they have beer pong on Wed nights and the smokers can roam free. Friday nights also see it's fair share of Idol hopefuls as tipsy bar goers ply their voices for karaoke.
Stop in for sure and check this place out if you haven't already. The crowd is super chill and it's all very welcoming.
This place was packed with a great band Sat night! Awesome mix of people. Was pleasantly surprised to see one of my favorite bartenders Jonathan working behind the bar. They also have a decent wine selection which I totally didn't expect from a dive bar in East County. Inside was a little loud and packed but they have a huge back patio with a fire pit. Very nice! Can't wait to come back for karaoke!! Thanks Regal for an awesome time!
Review Source:I'm not really one to go to bars that often, but when my friends and I want to go out, we always come to The Regal Bar. The atmosphere is very nice and the bar is usually kept extremely clean!
The beer selection is nice too. They usually have my favorite types of beer on tap and occasionally I will see some other micro brews on tap that I can try out.
The manager there is very nice and seems to do really well for that bar. Very dedicated!
Really surprised by the customer service. The bartenders are attentive and effecient even with a packed bar. Live music sounded great, and in between sets we went out back to take in the fireplace and a casual game of pool. and the waiter even went out of his way to unstick several pool balls for us because my date and I were no pool sharks lol. All in all great experience. We will definitely be going back.
like, tonight :)
I have to say that this has become one of my favorite places to hang out. Â ALL of the bartenders are wonderful and take good care of you! I can only make that comment as of today though..and those of you know me, know exactly what I mean. Â Friday night Karaoke is great and the concerts on Saturday nights are rockin'!!! Thursday nights are fun too!! If you haven't tried The Regal, come on out!!!!!
Review Source:I have to say for a bar that looks so small or like nothing from the outide its cool inside and has a patio with fire pits .Its just cute for a small nieghborhood bar I like it .Ive been there three times now and both the bar tenders are very nice they are friendly and make great drinks .One of the bar tenders created one of his own signature shots it was realy good . They are super nice here and the place seems to have a pretty cool crowd I like it .
Review Source:I love the bar, especially considering what it used to be. Â It's got great potential and the remodel is gorgeous. Â However they really do need to switch out the Friday evening barkeep - the girl's a twit & her service is TERRIBLE...and not just on one occassion either; it's a pretty regular thing.
Review Source:Making your way in the world today takes everything you've got.
Taking a break from all your worries, sure would help a lot.
Wouldn't you like to get away?
** To the Regal Bar, Yes.
Sometimes you want to go
** Always up for a quick drink at the Regal
Where everybody knows your name,
and they're always glad you came.
** Staff is first rate; John, Brian and Antonio always make us feel at home. They keep us coming back. Just need to find the local version of a hot Kirste Alley :).
You wanna be where you can see,
our troubles are all the same
** Great place to watch the game, play some pool, darts, beer pong, or just hang out near the fire pit. A must during the football season.
You wanna be where everybody knows
Your name.
** Welcoming local crowd
You wanna go where people know,
people are all the same,
You wanna go where everybody knows
your name. @ the Real Bar.
See you there !!!
This is my go-to watering hole. Â It's in my neighborhood, it's reasonable, and it's clean. Â More importantly, the people are great. Â My experience with San Diego bars is that staff can very typically be inattentive, pretentious, rude, put-upon sort of people. Â This is not the case with The Regal. Â Brian, Jonathan, and Antonio are not only good bartenders but very friendly. Â And now that they've acquired their liquor license everything has seemingly fallen into place. Â
Cheers, Regal.
This place is so new they don't have a full liquor license yet (by September, they say). But they do have plenty of beer on tap, pool tables, darts, and an outdoor patio with a fire pit. Â So, if you can't figure out how to have a good time here, I can't help you.
Bonus points for the bartender who saved us some money. Â We ordered 2 Blue Moons, and she said 'They're $4 each, or I can give you a pitcher for $12." Â Sold.
I have been to the bar that used to be where The Regal is now and I must say that the owners have really done a great job of cleaning the place up! Â Very friendly staff! Â Friday nights are my favorite...karaoke and all of the "great" singing keep me coming back! Â I hear Saturday does Karaoke as well...I'll have to check it out.
I can't wait for The Regal to become a BIGGER place! Â Keep up the good work guys!!
This is what used to be Joe and Andy's. Â Don't let that fool you though.
These guys have spent the money and have really cleaned the place up. Â EVERYTHING is brand new. Â Seriously....if you remember J and A's bathroom(s), you will completely appreciate the UPGRADE. Â
Plenty of Beers on tap as well as a healthy selection of wines. Â Still very moderately priced. Â Ask for the Shock Top Wheat Beer with Orange. Â
My only criticisms:
1. The bar is still really small. Â Maybe even smaller than before.
They are obviously hoping to expand.
2. No Jukebox.
Well worth checking out! Â Super friendly Bar staff, which is a nice change for La Mesa.
