Your standard Carmichael Mexican food - really flavorful and good selection of decently priced beers/mixed drinks.  Food comes out super fast!  They are also pretty flexible with substitutions in your meal.  Nice shaded outdoor seating.

Free tortilla chips are a little stale and overfried.  Salsa selection is good though! Love that creamy jalapeno ranch dip.

Just moved to Carmichael a few months ago, there's not a lot of good restaurants around here especially ones that stay open for long.. The service was GREAT, a little crammed but the food was delicious and affordable 5 stars!

Have lived in Carmichael for years but just discovered this place. Great place for a quick drop in with very good margaritas and every dish I have had has been excellent. Best ceviche I have ever had!

The booths we were offered were all dirty as was the drinking glass. The water had stuff floating in it. It was a nightmare.  My boyfriend was starving so we stayed to try to food.  It was mediocre at best.  I had the Azteca salad and he had a trio sampler and fajitas.  I was tempted to order a drink to soften the mood, but the filthy glass and pulpy water was a huge turn off.  Never going back again!

Love this neighborhood spot!! They have made lots of great changes lately, especially the bar and happy hour!! I have never had bad service here, the food is always great, the staff is very friendly and the owner frequently walks around talking to his customers. My orders can be somewhat picky and they have never messed one thing up! Ever! And I love the salsa bar.

I took my mom here for lunch on a Thursday. It was her suggestion. We both had the fish tacos. I wasn't impressed.  Nothing bad, just nothing to write home about. The service was good, the staff was friendly and professional. Mom said the food usually was better. I don't know if I'll be back though.

The only reason I don't give this place 5 stars is because I am stingy with that rating. But this place is EXCELLENT! The service is fantastic. The owner/manager (not sure?) visited our table twice. The entire wait staff checked with us regularly. The food is outstanding. The atmosphere is kinda funky, but comfortable. We went there for the first time last night and I guarantee we are going back.

This place rocks! It has been the go to spot for me and my group of friends for years. And now they have a bar! The food is great and cheap for as good as it is. LOVE their carnitas, so juicy. The staff is very friendly.

Excellent local joint. It's always great to come into a restaurant and have the staff know your name and which beer you always order! And, all of the staff are totally friendly. I've been eating here a couple times a month for over two years now. Traditional Mexico-City style food (big orders, lots of beans and rice on the plate), but very good and consistent.
I judge Mexican joints by their carnitas - and Rey Azteca does it right. Price-wise, it's always a deal for the amount of food you'll get...bring your appetite.

I've been twice now and would highly recommend this place. Salsa bar is tasty, service is good and the food is great. I've tried the combo plates and mega burrito, makes chipotle look like a kids meal.

Love this place!  The service is amazing. Every single staff member is sweet and helpful and they remember you when you come back. This is our favorite neighborhood go to.  I always order a drink that is a bit of a pain to make and every time they remember what it is and make it perfectly. I love the fish tacos with cilantro rice, my boyfriend orders the carnitas and says it's the best he's had. For sure going back, I am now a regular. :)

I'm giving this five stars but want to explain first.

When you think of 5 stars you think something like "whoohoo! As good as it gets!"
But sometimes 5 stars can be something like "For what this is, I cannot think of anyplace better."

    Service: Friendly and responsive
Atmosphere: Clean and mexican-restauranty but not cafeteria-like
Food: Excellent and modest yet adequate portions
    Price: Just right

Yes, I guess you can find mexican food that is better with a hipper atmosphere.  But for a family-owned restaurant that hits all the right notes and feels authentic (because it is), it doesn't get any better.  It's one of those places that you may forget how much you liked until it comes up in your mind.  At that point, you realize that there is absolutely no reason not to go there which is a solid endorsement.

My boyfriend's step-mom lives in Carmichael & while we were visiting, she wanted to take us to lunch. Shawn wanted Mexican, but she didn't know where a good one was. I checked yelp & found this little nugget. The service was pretty good-he wanted to make sure we were happy. The food was pretty good, not the best but good considering the city it's in (I'm from San Jose), it was delicious. They took care of us but didn't bother us by helicoptering. I would go back next time I'm in town. You should try it out!

    Meh-  Not great.

    Food is a solid B-
~chips are over fried and heavy
~I had the carnitas burrito, it was dryyyyyyy.  It needed some flavor and umph.
~portion was huge, but if the food is mediocre I do not need an entire plate of it.

this place is not hole in the wall cheap, I will probably come back and try one more thing before making final judgement.

Very very good !! Import beers at a great price. Carnitas are delicious !! Very good atmosphere. Yesterday was my first visit and I will be there again.

The Carne Asada wasn't as good as the carnitas plate. The Carne Asada comes with an Enchilada which was not really cooked all the way. However, we will go back - overall best Mexican food in Carmichael !

We love this place and have gone for years.  Had amazing tacos last week: one chicken, one carnitas, one carne; all had tons of meat.  Delicious.  The tostada regular is huge and under 6 bucks also.

They have just opened a bar, done a little renovation, and have the kitchen open later.  There aren't many places open late around here so I'm thrilled about it - esp for summer.

Great food, great service, great place.

The Mixed Burrito is a good deal and the nachos are very tasty. Likely that you'll be taking some home unless you're really hungry. The Mega Wet Burrito is even bigger!
They have a shrimp and fish soup that is great as well.
The salsa bar is good with lots of different flavors and levels of spicyness.
Lately I saw that they serve liquor so you should be able to get that margarita along with your meal :)

We have been eating here for at least 3 years now.  What a great place, the food, the owner, his son, the employees.  I don't have one bad thing to say about it.

The food is as close as I can find in California  to the food I love in Texas.

I'm the only one at my table who didnt care for my meal. My Chimichanga was LOADED with rice and beans and a very small portion of diced steak.
The drinks were good the chips were good. My wife had the sampler and was pleased.  I have to say just A-OK when the Chimichanga reminds me of a deep fried rice burrito.

The star thing was killing me on this one. I wasn't sure whether to give it a three, three and a half, or four. Here's my deal: the chips and salsa were a one, they used way to much salt or something and the salsa was a step below average.

I ordered Fajitas, and they were solid, nothing for me to rave about but nonetheless they were quality. My cousins love the place and they both got burritos, that they felt were solid. The service was fantastic; the food didn't take too long, all the employees were professional yet enjoyable, and since it is a small joint they were always very accessible.

So did I fall in love? Meh, but I would recommend giving it a go if you're in the neighborhood and feeling some authentic Mexican food.

Went back the other night and ordered the same thing... it's hard for me to break out of my box... I naturally went on one of my diatribes to the server about the implicit need for enchiladas to be excruciatingly hot.

This time, they brought out my big plate of my mini burrito and the requisite refried beans and rice sans enchilada - and then on a second leeeetle plate was a piping hot molten pool of golden, steaming delicious cheese enchilada.  I definitely had a huge smile on my face and I think I even clapped a few times under the table as he set it down.  Yeah, cheese enchiladas!

I actually had the fajitas, which used Rib Eye beef, and were not very tasty, BUT!

My entire table had enchiladas, Which should of been a telltale sign to get the enchiladas. They were amazing.

I think I am going to have to come back and try some more things before I can give them a solid 4 star review.

I really like this place. They are so friendly and warm here!

I tried the veggie burrito and it was pretty good. The boy had the chimichanga and he said the chicken was tender and flavorful. They have a serve yourself salsa bar and all their salsas were yummy. As we were almost finished the server came back and refilled my orchata, which was nice because most taquerias charge you for another one. It is not the most authentic Mexican food but they make up for it in service and prices are good. Can't wait to try more of their menu! They seem to have some good lunch specials too!

I went to Rey Azteca for menudo (per a friend's enthusiastic suggestion) but they were already sold out by the time I got there.  I settled for the Mojarra (tilapia), which was absolutely delicious.  The skin was crispy while the inside was tender and juicy.

The horchata was fabulous (didn't come from a mix) and the salsa bar had a nice variety of fresh salsa ranging from mild to hot.

The service was friendly and attentive.  Bathrooms were clean and well-stocked with supplies.  I'll definitely be coming back here again!

Yum, god damn it.  This place rocked.  It is kinda out of the way and looks pretty rough on the outside, it was a solid Taqueria with really good food,  The chip and salsa bar was  great.  As for these chips, so friggin good.  I think I could make a meal of them, hence the sign warning you need to buy food if your going to eat a boat load of crack like chips.

Next time I am lost in our state's capital, I'm going here.

Well, I can't say that I've eaten a "normal sized meal" here, but I've passed it a few times, and it's a block from where my father lives, AND they serve beer, so he and I went there today just to sit outside and have a cold NEGRA MODELO (the best!) and guacamole with chips/salsa. The place was packed, many/most of them hispanic, so it must be pretty decent being most hispanic and/or mexican people I know prefer their own cooking. The guacamole was real good, the salsa was decent.....not as spicy as I prefer, but nonetheless, tasty!
The waitress, who appeared to be caucasian (???) was super friendly, and GIRL NEXT DOOR CUTE/PRETTY! I'd go again just to see her smiling cute face :)

I give this place 3.5 stars. I tried the carnitas - one fellow Yelper highly recommended it. I do have to admit, it is probably some of the best I've ever had.

The decor is nice & cozy, but the seats in the booth seriously need to be replaced! I wear shorts in the summer (don't we all?) and the cracked up seat cover against my skin was not comfortable at all.

I thought the little sign by the chips and salsa was interesting. If you don't order at least $5 worth of food, you need to pay $2 for the chips and salsa. The chips are solid & crispy & the salsa bar is pretty standard. My favorite salsa bar is at Azul downtown. What I really liked about the salsa bar here though is this wonderful sour cream dip with a kick at the end.

Me & the husband ordered tostadas. Average sized with very fresh ingredients, but was a bit disappointed to find no rice in the tostada. Maybe I've been misled by a gringoism in other joints, but I coulda sworn that they usually have rice in them!

You can tell that this place has a solid clientele. I've never seen them advertise and I have driven by this place for years and never paid attention to it until I came across it on Yelp.

It is an okay spot, but I am still on a quest to find my favorite local taqueria.

Rey Azteca catered a party for 50 persons:  the food was delivered at 5:00 pm but the hostess did not serve dinner until 6:30 pm.  Even though all of the food sat in chafing dishes for 90+ minutes, everything was moist and fresh!  First off, the carnitas!  Some of the best I've had.   Beans & rice were incredible, they were as good as what we make at home in our  kitchen.  The pico de gallo and salsas were excellent.  Even the tortillas & guacamole were good.  I've had mexican catered events before, and none were on a par with the spread served by Rey Azteca......they get my
HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION for Mexican Food off-site catering!

Just one question: are you guys smokin' crack?

My wife and I visited this place yesterday evening. Normally, I love frequenting hole-in-the-wall joints like Rey Azteca; I'm really not one to judge a book by its cover.  I had driven by this spot often on my work commute, and was curious.  The place always seemed busy.  My wife  ordered the 2 taco combo (chicken), and I ordered my usual: chicken taco, and chile relleno covered with chile verde.  The chile verde was super salty.  The chile inside was quite small, and all that egg batter took up half the plate anyway.  The tacos were so crunchy they fell apart on the first bite.  There were 3 chunks of chicken per taco; pretty skimpy.  The rice and beans were decent.

The server was nice and polite.  The chips were crunchy and tasty, but the salsa was kinda bland. Reasonable prices, but really, they should be!  The food we ate was just a tad below average, and mexican food is something I've had a lot of.  Sorry, but I can't understand why anyone would view Rey Azteca as a destination worth seeking twice.

Recently met Love and his buddies here for lunch on a Sunday afternoon.  I have driven by a few times meaning to stop in for a bite but I always miss the damn turn in!  It's a small restaurant with very little parking....with pastel decor.

When My Love called and told us to meet him there, I was fairly excited.  I love finding new places to eat- and he and his friends grew up in the area and they all vouched for it's salsa bar and good, authentic food.

Because I had a day of beer, hot dogs and pretzels ahead of me, I knew I had to eat light.  I ordered an ensalada azteca- a HUGE salad tossed with a great dressing, avocado, chicken and veggies.  I love going to a Mexican restaurant that actually serves some kind of salad...and they have quite a few to choose from!  Sometimes you want the fresh flavor of Mexican food- but with out all of the fat.

I did have some chips and salsa- very good, thick chips.  The salsa is OKAY.  I tried all of them...I liked the smoky one the best- not as spicy as I usually like my salsa...

Child1 ordered chicken taquitos- I tasted them and they were just okay as well....I checked out what everyone else ordered and quickly realized that tacos will be next on the list.  Love ordered a chicken quesidilla- which was mucho GRANDE...he still has half of it in the fridge.

The service was as attentive as they could be- it was getting extremely packed in there.  We did miss a drink but no worries....my daughter liked her horchata- and she helped me with the salad.  Pricing is fair...about $60 to feed 3 men, one teenage boy...a mother and a little princess.  Definitely a re-do...I love re-do's!!!!

This is one of my neighborhood standby's, the place I always hit when I want good cheap food from good honest people. It's California style Mexican food with no pretensions about it, and it really gets the job done.

I always seem to find myself ordering the chorizo taco - it's delicious, with spicy red and delicatley browned meat spilling out of the corn tortilla it's served in. Add some chopped cilantro and a bit of onion and you've got a good meal. The chile verde version is also good, with the same spiced honesty that the chorizo does so well.

The enchiladas are some of the best I've had in the region, as the spices are detectably there rather then glopped away into the background as is the wont of some establishments. The side rice and beans are also dependably good. Check out the vintage paper platters at the tables - they appear to be a 70's primer on how to speak Spanish in the event of finding yourself at a swank Cabo resort. Awesome.

The chips and salsa are of course excellent, especially the spicy roasted varieties. Take as much as you want, as long as you've ordered food. They also offer a selection of technicolored Jarritos soda's, which are basically pure sugar and thus incredibly delicious. And it's a good place to watch the latest soccer game - a big screen TV, beer and tacos, what more could you want?

As an aside, the murals on the outside walls are spectacularly cheesy, and I mean that in the best way possible. You should make a special effort to view them if you visit.
