Decent Shepard Pie, using ground beef and hand cut veggies. The side order of polenta is great, as is the grilled veggies. Nice burgers, but if you order rare be prepared for a cold pattie.  It's a no frills experience and priced as such. Decent desert menu, with an occasional home-run of house made cobbler or bread pudding.  Baseball Games on in the bar and never so full you need a reservation.

Decent place to make a large crowd happy as something for everyone, or simply make yourself happy with a large bar tab- it'll be a win-win.

Went in for a Sunday Brunch. The staff was young and prone to mistakes, though the mistakes were promptly corrected with some of the items being comped off (thus the 4 star not a 3 star). The coffee was bitter but tolerable. The ambiance is always fun... after all it is an Irish pub with the drinks flowing freely. I will go back.

Went in late. Had a nice time watching game and having a beer with my wife. Bartender was pleasant and knowledgable with drinks

Food was good. Unfortunately the staff was taking a shot while calculating our bill and mischarged us. It was corrected but that's a little sloppy. Clean it up folks.

I went here because I heard they had good salads.  Indeed they do, and big ones!  If you want a protein salad, you can find plenty to eat and probably share it with someone else or have leftovers.

I appreciated that they had hard cider as well, though I don't like Magner's much.

The food is mediocre and it was hard to get a second drink. Once our food was delivered we were forgotten about. It is in a great location and had a nice casual feel ( which we needed since we had 3 kids with us)

I went to college in Santa Cruz and worked here for a couple years. That was seven or so years ago, but every time I am in town, I stop by for a meal. A couple people still work there all this time, speaking to the kind of environment it is. Customers have been loyal for all these years, too. It's great for people of all walks of life, from grandparents who like lamb stew and corned beef  to young people who enjoy their sandwiches and ever changing menu of current food trends. I've worked plenty of places I've never stepped foot in again and this one goes deeper than just the menu. If you can go in when Beth is bartending. One of the best.

Overall pretty darn good! Salad was not nice and crisp but it was good...burger was good, fish and chips great, beer selection great. Service was alright. We'll back for sure.

I totally liked it here. And I'm not really a fan of Irish Pub's so either this is a great Irish Pub, or it's not "really" an Irish Pub. But either way, I liked it. Nice ambiance, high ceilings, lots of polished wood. TV's for the sports fans which didn't get in the way of me having a nice conversation with ma frenz. I would return.

Came here with a group of friends recently. Always saw it from outside but never ventured in until then. Out of all the bars downtown, this one definitely looks like the least shady. The entrance is on Pacific but the stairs right after the door lead up to the restaurant. We got the alcove next to the street so we had a cool view. For an early Saturday night there weren't that many people and our service was good. The fried calamari was excellent. Two of our party ordered the fish and chips which they said was really good, too. Lots of drink choices, something for everybody. Overall a nice place to hang out and share some small bites with a couple of friends.

My husband and I absolutely love this place. Great food and large beer selection.I don't recommend drinking here without a partner as it is upstairs! (I have my husband help me Down after a good night) anyways the hot redhead bartender is awesome! Tip her extra!

Good service. I finally ate at Rosie's instead of just visiting their bar. I really wanted a shepard's pie and I was rewarded with a warm rich filling pie that was totally worth it.
    Not Disappointed yet.

I love this place. I wish I could try more of their fabulous menu buy I have to get the fish and chips every time - they are amazing!

I'm not crazy about their drinks but they have a pretty good drink menu.

Family friendly as long as your kids aren't rowdy. There is a restaurant area and a bar.

    The decor is really cool!

As they say, you vote with your wallet, and Rosie's probably gets more of our dinner dollars than any other place in Santa Cruz. My husband and I love the big entree salads (a blessing for those of us suffering through a low-carb New Year's Resolution.) It is also one of the best places to bring visiting friends and relatives --it's relaxed, comfortable and reliable. The produce is fresh, the value is solid, and the service is always friendly and efficient.Servers are also accommodating when we "customize" our orders by swapping out salad dressing or greens...like the pickypants we are. I just learned by reading another Yelp review that they serve breakfast, too! We're going to have to try it.

As a guest at a large gathering here, I was impressed with the service and food. Calamari was above average (the strips were better than the tentacles, but all in all, good stuff). The Irish nachos were good, too (even better fried up the next morning with eggs!). The Greek salad was excellent. Our two servers were hustling amid the chaos & deserve to be commended.

I am a breakfast foodie, and Rosie's waffles and breakfast entrees brought me here.  The breakfast chef is impressive but after seeing the warmth and "fine" dining room, I decided to give their dinner menu a try, on New Year's Eve.  The steak and lobster was cooked to perfection the bangers were the best sausage I've ever tried, so mild that it didn't taste like any sausage I've ever had.  I love the well lit ambiance, it upgrades the ambiance in comparision to the dark and dingy bar scence so typical of these places.

This might not make any fine dining list but for Santa Cruz, this is as good as one can get and I come to SC for the breakfasts time and time again.  Now I finally have place for dinner!

This review is only for the bar, as I haven't eaten here in a few years.

Brought a friend here for her 21st birthday. Rosie's used to make the best AMF in Santa Cruz, and I thought it a necessary drink for her to sample on this most joyous of occasions. Either it was an off night, or my tastes have changed, but I wasn't all that pleased with the drink.

That being said, they have an impressive selection of Irish whiskey and Scotch whisky, for being an American bar. The selections available are a bit on the younger side, but still nice to see more than just the standards of Jameson and Glenfidditch.

Visiting from out of town, I wanted a place with a lively crowd, some live music, and cool atmosphere. A cocktail and some bar food sounded good, and this place look interesting enough from the street.

Not so inside. We walked in and the host staff seemed to be annoyed that we showed up while they were preoccupied with their own conversation.  We did get a nice booth by the window.
Looking at the cocktail list, I was very disappointed. An "Irish" bar with vodka and rum drinks primarily on the cocktail list?? Really? Where's the Irish? One drink used Jameson, and out of about 20 drinks, that's not a good ratio.  So I ordered a Harp's (Irish beer). Also noticed they list their Scotches before their Irish Whiskeys. Nice to see an "Irish Pub" proud of Ireland. Also saw many Sierra Nevada signs, table tents, and servers pushing their "Celebration Ale".

Server seemed rushed. Like she didn't want to answer our questions and just wanted us to order and leave.  Not very welcoming.

Food was ok. Not great, but just ok. Wound up having Irish Nachos (with unripe tomatoes), and the roasted Garlic and Brie appetizer. Again, nothing special.

Overall, I'm ashamed this place even calls themselves an "Irish Pub", because if this place wasn't painted green, it's not even close.

And what's with the dusty mirror ball hanging in the middle of the dining room???

You can find Rosie McCann's on Santa Cruz's "Main Drag" - Pacific Avenue- and if you've never been there, you'll be surprised to find a formidable set of stairs leading up to the actual restaurant when you step into the door. (Don't worry, there is an elevator available leading to the back entrance of the restaurant!) Your dinner is well worth the climb.

The dining room is larger than most pub-style restaurants, and has a welcoming and casual atmosphere. The servers are friendly and attentive without being creepy or annoying. The music playing on the overhead speaker is sure to please most people who are bothering to listen. The menu prices are reasonable for almost any budget.  And most importantly, the food is consistently awesome.

Personally, I come here for the burgers (great quality meat, cooked to perfect, plenty of topping options) and the fresh-cut fries with malt vinegar. NOM. But having brought many visiting friends to Rosie's, I can attest that all the menu items we've tried have been delicious. After living in Santa Cruz for almost 6 years, I can say with much confidence that Rosie's is my favorite restaurant in Santa Cruz.

So you want a pint and a burger, eh?  Well you could do worse, but don't expect anyone here to know how to pour a Guinness properly - this place is strictly 'plastic paddy' - as Irish as a drunk wearing a tatty "kiss me I'm Irish" t-shirt and green plastic derby on his head on St. Pats day.   A friend of mine from Ulster said it made him quite uncomfortable - felt like looking at his home and culture as if he were a Disney ride.

Sure, the food is okay I suppose, but with so many far better options nearby, and most less expensive, why would you bother?

Pretty consistently good food - better than the typical "pub" fare I was expecting.

The place turns into a dance hall on the weekends, and I've gone dancing there a lot with friends when we're in town. The bouncers have been really on top of security, walking the perimeter of the dance area, chatting with people, etc, in a welcoming way. And the crowd dancing has consistently been upbeat and low-drama, just kids and older folks getting their dance on. Pleasantly surprised, every time.

This place was a nice surprise while walking down Pacific Ave in downtown Santa Cruz. My boyfriend and his friends and I all wanted to go out for a quick drink and possibly an appetizer.

Right when we walked in on a Friday night at around 9pm-10pm, the place was packed all along the bar with people waiting against the walls. I had never seen a non-hippi/non-super bougie bar in Santa Cruz so I was really surprised to see that this was where all the creatures came out to.

We decided to sit in a booth. I ordered house chardonnay, and the boys got irish nachos and beers. It was good. It wasn't phenomenal. The waitress was kind of pressuring us to hurry to because she was closing her tabs for the night.

And then some crazy cougar things happened. I guess they turn this place into like a club at night??? They cleared the dining area (while we were still eating and drinking) and set up strobe lights with people funneling in. I don't know...it was weird.

I would come back here though. The wine was decently priced and we had a nice time.

After jumping out of a plane, and then calming down a bit from the adrenaline rush, I really wanted a drink.  I used the Yelp app and decided on this place.

It was mostly empty on a Saturday around noon.  We started with Irish Car Bombs, which were not my idea, but good, and then I had a couple of spicy Bloody Marys.  They were perfectly adequate, but not as spicy as I like.  So that we weren't total drunks before a reasonable time, we got some fish and chips and sweet potato fries.  They were pretty good, too.  I think I preferred the sweet potato fries.

I'd definitely stop in here again since there was no wait, service was good and I got my fill of food and drink.

Went in here for a drink on the Saturday after Thanksgiving.  After some relatively rude service and a forgotten drink (my wife ended up ordering from the bar, and not our server), my friends and I sat down in the dining area, where there were TVs showing the last of the football games.
The place was relatively quiet, with several couples or small groups enjoying their drinks.  Then at about 10:00 pm, the music was turned up so loud throughout the bar that you couldn't hear anything.  Way too loud, even for dancing (which nobody was doing).  It soon chased us and the other groups out.  After maybe 20 minutes of being in there with the music so damn loud, my ears were still ringing when i went to bed that night.

My advice, if you have to go there later on - wear ear plugs!

champagne brunch on a saturday? I'll take it.

our server and host were super friendly and made sure our glasses were never empty.

this ended being a double ended sword.

someone in our group, I won't name names, may have been so blessed with great service that his/her bottomless mimosa was never empty.

after eating some deliciously amazing huevos rancheros, he/she may have "tasted his/her food twice" if you will... right on the table we were sitting at.

luckily, the super friendly staff was quick on the clean up (and the check!) and we high tailed it out of there.

we're sorry about the mess, but I'll back... as long as you'll have me, that is.

Came here for lunch with a Groupon.

Irish Nachos were pretty amazing! Get them plain though because the meat addition is definitely not worth it (we had teeny tiny scraps of chicken). I was worried that the potato chips would be soggy but every single slice which was thickcut - not too thick, but not too thin; sturdy! - was perfectly crispy!

Shepherd's Pie was amazingggg. Came with a simple side salad. Crispy broiled top of parmesan cheese. Smooth mashed potatoes on top of the carrot, pea and ground beef stew. Very, very filling - all for like $9-10? What a deal!

Friend had the bangers and mash which was also good. The sausages were smooth and velvety in texture. Kind of reminded me of german sausages.

Try this place out for lunch if you can!

*This review is for Rosie's as a nightclub; not the restaurant*

Rosie's is often the #1 destination for my Santa Cruz friends and I when we want to go dancing. Why? I'm not exactly sure..

The music is fine, nothing spectacular but not bad either. It's a lot of top 40 hip-hop sort of stuff. DJ AD is pretty good, usually there Fridays, although I DO have a bone to pick with her. She played Billie Jean one night and about 90 minutes later I asked if she could play Michael Jackson and she said "I already played one of those." I'm glad that she didn't just lie and say she'd do it, but still, "one of those"? Have some respect! :P

The drink prices aren't absurd but aren't cheap either. It's about $7 for a standard cocktail of acceptable pour and $9 for a Grateful Dead, AMF, etc. which are strong by default. The short dark/long-haired female bartender is very sweet and takes good care of us, however it can take 10 minutes or so to flag down a bartender when they're busy.

**The men here are NOT of high caliber.**
The vast majority are not dressed well and they are all cheap. They stand on the outskirts of the dance floor watching the girls drink their self-bought drinks and waiting for standards to be lowered. Many girls try wayyy too hard when dressing to come here, in their hooker heels and tight tiny dresses and the guys are always into it.
Consider yourself lucky if a man approaches you to dance and does not grab you in a private area within 60 seconds.

Case and point: I was here this past Friday night and actually had to ask out loud, "Did you just lick my face?" We've decided to find another spot for our next evening out.

I love spending time at most places in downtown Santa Cruz, Rosie's is definitely not one of them.

Rosie's is the "club" most people from out of town come for. There is a $5 cover and they actually frisk you before you go inside. This is Santa Cruz and you are checking me for weapons before I can enter? Once I step foot inside I normally wish I would have brought a gun, not for protection, or starting problems, but to blow my own brains out. I would rather be water boarded then spend an entire night here.

Santa Cruz is famous for it's laid back beach attitude, but every time I've been here I've seen a fight. I don't know why this place is such a magnet for idiots, but it is.

Do yourself a favor a skip Rosie's next time you come downtown, you'll thank me later.

Rose McCann's is a quaint little pub tucked in the wall on Pacific Ave.  I discovered it one day with my best friend when we were strolling the Avenue (which, by itself, is an awesome place to go--lots of shops, lots of interesting people).

First thing's first--to get INTO the pub, you have to do a little mountain climbing:  what I mean is that there's a huge, steep staircase you have to huff and puff your way up.  It's kind of off-putting at first but it's worth it.

Pretty much every time I've gone in, there's been good music playing.  The drinks will knock you on your ass, so be careful!  The service is hit-or-miss; I've had really good, personable servers and then I've had she-devils from the planet Bitch.  The food is pub food--not bad, but I wouldn't go there for a full meal.  I always have the clam chowder and that's pretty delicious (a plus for a little sea-side town, for sure).  The prices are alright--again, I wouldn't pay the $15-20+ for the full meals but the appetizers and the small dishes are decently priced.

I keep coming back to this place for the atmosphere.

I like Rosie, yes I do.

Happy hour from 3:30 - 6:30 is great. Greygoose martini's for $7.00! Me likey! They have an assortment of other tasty cocktails for $7 bucks as well. My friend tried a Giant Pear concoction which tasted sweet but sure packed a punch. Greygoose gimlet was really strong. 80 proof heaven again!

    BOO rosie's bouncers
    BOO cover after 10
    BOO guys who grope you
BOO pretending to be cultured and irish

YAY one of the only dancing places on pacific
    YAY Irish car bombs

the BOO to YAY ratio makes it clear, so 3 stars it is.

and by the way, i solve most of my life predicaments in this very advanced, methodical fashion.

Came here with some friends for a quick bite to eat for lunch. I was just too tired from driving in from LA, to have a beer.  Friends said the beers were pretty good. I think they had the Santa Cruz Ale.

I wanted the bangers and mash, but I knew if I had it I would have been knocked out for the rest of the day, so I tried to keep it light with the California Chicken... avocado, bacon, cheese = yum. I thought these 3 magical ingredients could overcome the fact that they use chicken breast for the sandwich. Alas, white meat is still white meat... DRY.  The fries weren't anything to write home about either.

The ambiance was pretty cool. The server was really friendly but didn't seem very experienced. She didn't bring over silverware and napkins until we asked for it.

Came here on a Tuesday night and there were barely any people here. I feel everyone was at the Red or the Blue.

Barely anyone dancing and the drinks were pretty expensive.
However, Rosies' record shows that it can have a banging party if there are lots of people. The hiphop music is pretty decent.

We were at the table talking and all of the sudden at 1:15 AM, the music stopped, the lights turned on and they proceeded to close the bar and kicked us out. 1:15AM!!! WAY to go to be lame! Meanwhile the Blue and the Red were bangin and Rosie McCann basically just put up the white flag and surrendered. I was very disappointed and pissed that they closed the bar early.

I came here the other night with an old friend.  We had spent the evening catching up and lost track of time.  By the time we motivated to go catch a bite, it was late, and on a weeknight there were not many options available.

After the seemingly endless walk up the long flight of stairs we were greeted by a very friendly bartendress.  We ordered food which was meh.  I had a Greek salad with chicken which was huge....but really sub-par in flavor.  My friend had a steak and it too was just OK.

Overall, we had drinks and caught up so it wasn't a total loss.  As the evening progressed more and more young people came in and moved toward the area of the bar where the dance floor was.

One more tidbit we all seemed to leave out... as we were going to leave (we were literally already on our feet heading towards the door), one of the bouncers who had been uninvolved up until this point, decided it would be necessary to add that "whoever is still in here in 5 minutes, is sleeping with me tonight!" He skipped right over inappropriate and straight to verbal assault. That's what I call customer service!

After Christa W. composed a thorough letter depicting the horror we experienced at Rosie's, she went to email it to their complaint box. Funny thing, it was full. She tried back several times over the coming weeks to no avail. Obviously, we aren't the only ones disturbed by Rosie McCann's "business" practices.

    Ewwww.

I know I'm not the best person to ask about a place like this, seeing as I don't like picking up whores at sweaty pseudo-clubs, but this place is just nasty.

It's way too crowded for it's size. It's armpit-to-asshole all the time. It's filled with retarded drunk beeatches, with whom I couldn't carry a conversation about anything except maybe Britney Spears. Other than that its walls are lined with ghetto-looking dudes who are all trying to reel in the drunkest-looking slut and get her drunker.

Yes, I have been on the dance floor...I've been known to cut-a-rug. Similar theme going on here, except without the ladies. Usually there's 4 wasted chicks getting freaky with some of the dudes. The other 50 dudes are trying to Night-at-the-Roxbury their way into getting a booty dance. 50 other dudes are standing silently still on the periphery, ominously examining the scenario. Weird.

I don't know why people go there. Meat Market.

The attitude on the part of the staff here is laughably awful.

We had a group hanging out near the bar, and every time one of the servers walked through with food she would shout "make an aisle!" with an extremely annoyed expression.  The barstools were full, and while we weren't trying to block her, we were just standing talking... as people are known to do in bars, yes?

Once this happened several times, my buddies decided that the next time she came through they would not only deliberately move in order to give her the requested aisle, but they also sang barbershop quartet style "Aisle, aisle, AISLE!"  Kind of immature, but also kind of funny, and they all did it with cute smiles.  They also had surprisingly good harmony!

Any humor was lost on snotty server, as she gave us a nasty look then launched into a speech about how she would have us thrown out.  Um, what?  The super drunk guy who was literally falling off his stool and shouting random obscenities at people deserved to be kicked out (and he eventually was), but poking a little fun merits getting booted too?

Sure enough, seconds later one of the THREE bouncers hovering nearby (should have been a warning that they anticipate trouble here) came over to ask us what the problem was.  One of my friends politely explained that he didn't think there was a problem, but power trip bouncer replied "if she has to talk to you, then there is a problem."  Oh, of course!  Lowering herself to actually speak to patrons is clearly a no-no.

I was almost excited at the prospect of being kicked out of a bar for the first time in my life, since clearly we were going to blow out of there anyway to end all the lameness, but bouncer just lectured us.

They have a pretty solid selection of beers on tap, but so do several other nearby bars that won't give you nearly that level of attitude.  We won't be back.

Came here for the breakfast but ended up ordering lunch.  The garden burger I ordered came with sauteed mushrooms and fries. Pretty good.  I tried their banana walnut pancakes (which was a special) and they were damn good, even better than the banana pancakes at cafe brasil.

The service was awful.  Major attitude on the part of our server.  Anything we asked for was met with an extremely annoyed look on her face.  That is when we could get her attention to ask for anything.

As for the night scene, can be fun if you are in the mood to wait 20 mintues to order a drink and dance on a crowded floor.  However, if you are in the mood for dancing at least you feel less violated after a night here than after a night at the blue lagoon down the street.

I give Rosie 3 stars as I was in good company when I went there recently on a night from SF.  Their service deserves NO stars as it was nearly impossible to get a drink, and when we did, they sucked - and I was even drinking Bud Light - how do you mess that up, you ask??  Oh, I'll tell you how.  You hand it to me with an attitude and sticky hands, that's how!

The dance floor boasted the same stickiness.  On an attempt to do some dancing, my friends and I were welcomed with elbows at every freaking turn... I mean blatant elbows thrown every which way!  Either this is a Santa Cruz dance craze or everyone was doing the 'Seinfeld' Elaine dance and I didn't get the memo...  A girl spilled her drink in our vicinity which left broken glass everywhere while adding to the above mentioned stickiness.

I did hear Nelly Furtado's "promiscuous girl" which was a plus as it got played out 5 months ago and I haven't heard it since.  That should tell you how the music was.

Oh, and people, get it straight the DJ is not where you all were facing (the back wall) he is located to the right of the dance floor where all you pricks put your drink on his table.

A message to the people smoking out front: Don't just stare at us while we wait in line behind you, and not tell us that it's NOT actually the line..geeze.
